I’ve actually worked on the Virgin Cosmic girl during my time as a ground engineer for Virgin Atlantic at that time we knew her as G-VWOW Cosmic Girl. I was working the day she departed for as we thought storage, but it turned out she was off to a new career. She was quite a new aircraft in very good condition, hope they’re treating her well in her new job!

I got to sit under the Cosmic Girl for a long time. I interacted with the team a lot. There is so much to tell about the aircraft. Who is flying it? That's a story on its own. When they bought the 747, they stripped it down and were astonished to see how well Virgin Atlantic maintained its fleet. Made me feel good because I flew them at the time. It's an impressive airplane. The extra pylon looked almost mangaesque in its design. What a great team. I would work for them in a heartbeat.

I saw 747 number one and two being built and I watched number 2 roll out and eventually fly with my dad who worked on it, I have super eight movies of its first flight coming down Puget Sound off Edmonds Beach . Number one never flew, it was tortured and destroyed in stress test jigs. Dad took me in to watch some of that too! He worked on B-52 number 11, 707 number one, and the first 747 until his retirement and 99! Thanks dad!

Back in 2001 while living in Illinois about 30 miles north west of Chicago, one morning I saw a 747 SP flown by Mandarin Airlines circling in a racetrack hold pattern about a half mile south of me. Every time it made a turn, the pilot over compensated going wings level after its turn. The plane did this on every turn giving the impression of being flown by someone who wasn’t that good at flying. I was concerned enough after the 9-11 attacks with airliners that I called the local police who then contacted the FAA. It lucky turned out be nothing in that it was a legitimate flight, but convinced me that Mandarin Airlines pilot’s were sub standard.

The SP is definitely more of a mod than the Pokemon livery. And on that subject, the third Ed Force 1 is a lot cooler than any Pokemon themed plane. That third plane was a 747 with Iron Maiden livery and sometimes flown by lead singer Bruce Dickinson.

From the beginning, the 747 was engineered to ferry a fifth engine under the inboard left wing with a full passenger load. This does reduce the range and over all performance and there are established flight adjustments made like increased Rt rudder, reduced cruise speed, and altitude. It's not a cheap way to ferry an engine though.

Did Boeing make a mistake in ending production of the 747? It seems like there is still a lot of interest in it. It _is_ the coolest jet ever made, right? I wonder if it was fuel costs? Maybe even with state of the art engines and all the other high tech upgrades, it still burned a ridiculous amount of fuel? I wouldn't be surprised if that was why. FYI as a child I had an uncle who worked for Boeing. He's gone now but I'm told that he also worked on the space shuttle for a few years.
