Quality doesn't affect my ability to enjoy a film, I'll happily be buying The Abyss, True Lies, and Aliens. 2024 is another year with fingers crossed for Panic Room.

The abyss 4k release has been cancelled for the uk. All because of the scene where they put the rat in a bag to see if it breathes in the liquid. Sick of the nanny state and snowflakes banning everything. Also I can still buy the dvd if I want that has that scene in it!

I will almost certainly buy the 'Jackie Brown' and 'True Lies' 4Ks. Like you I have the wide case SE from Criterion of 'The Abyss' but I will be keeping the old DVD as I have a promo Duck Feet blue flipper in the case. I have already pre-ordered the 'Fear and Desire' 4K as the new Kino Lorber edition also includes the other shorts in 4K. I have not pre-ordered 'Wages of Fear' as I want to see what they have done with the HDR and audio before making my decision.
I have also soured on Bobby Dee in recent times, notably when he went all over Twitter, etc., and made sure we all knew he was a Biden-backing Woke Weasel. Sorry to see it. The "old" Bob would never have put up with such weak tea, politically or otherwise. Your video was cool as usual. BTW, my favorite two from your bunch are Twister and Terminator. Can't wait!
I don’t normally go for the limited edition, with the fancy cases and posters etc. but I’m probably going to get that Conan Chronicles 4K. I rediscovered Conan The Barbarian a few years ago and I really enjoyed it; especially the score by Basil Poledouris which is easily one of my top five scores of all time. The movie itself I might put in the good to very good range but the score pushes it into the realm of greatness, and the thing I’m most excited about is hearing that soundtrack in Atmos. And I like that they included an isolated score track in lossless stereo
Hey Fuzz always enjoy your top 10 lists. Really looking forward to 4K for Aliens & Terminator and hope they re-do Terminator 2. One other movie I heard might be coming out in 2024 is Tombstone which is one of my favorites also.

I know that's one that a lot of people have been wanting to see finally get a 4K, but it's also a Hollywood Pictures title, so it's under the Disney umbrella. I really hope Disney gets their act together this year and starts releasing some of these great vault titles on 4K. They are literally sitting on a treasure trove (between Hollywood Pics, Touchstone and 20th Century Fox titles).

I will definitely be ordering the individual Conan films, it is sacreligious to pile those together in a single box (yet I'm still glad they made that an option); Aliens 2 Finally!; Terminator Finally! (Yes Please redo T2; I skipped that release since it's well known to be puke!!). True Lies Hell Yes!. The Abyss? We've been WAITING... very very paitiently. Just do it right. Please Please Please!. And finally.. Stop Making Sense on 4k? Please for the love of GOD let this have at least 5.1 sound, and higher spectrum is quite welcome Thank You. To me, the 4K digital release of True Lies is a letdown. So I’m looking forward to the physical release. However, the digital Aliens looks FANTASTIC to me!! It looks like Avatar😂
I've never seen it but if the price is right (and the transfer is goid) I might get Twister on 4k. I'd also love Terminator 1-3 and Salvation on 4k. I don't care about the rest.

That's cool... I hear ya. Everyone's different and has their own threshold for what they'll accept. I was just watching my 2019 blu ray release of Terminator last night. And yeah, I've definitely noticed some audio issues in a few spots (which become really pronounced when listening on a good pair of headphones -- especially when Reese doses off in the car and we see the future battle scenes). But for me personally, I can't imagine any scenario (for any movie, really) where I would be satisfied with the low-resolution image of an old 480p DVD over a nice-looking HD or 4K presentation, regardless of audio issues. But at the same time, I also place a much higher emphasis/priority/weight on the image quality when I'm watching movies than I do on the audio. And I realize some people are just the opposite -- they seem to care more about the audio than the image (which I've never fully understood, but I accept it. Different strokes for different folks). If we get a 4K of The Terminator, be buying it on Day One, regardless of what audio options they include -- although I do agree, I would like to see the original mono track included as one of the audio options too. And I think there's probably a good chance that could happen with a 4K release (especially if one of the boutiques get their hands on it). Thanks for watching! Appreciate it.
My main issue is that it wasn't a stylistic choice. Some of the special effects sounds were recorded on the same track as the dialogue, and when they were remastering the audio for the special edition release they thought they could clean up the background noise by cutting out wherever there wasn't any dialogue. So the metal scraping sound in the title sequence has been completely missing for the last 20 years, and gun blast from the terminator's pistol are gone for the most part. At least the re-recorded music at the end was an actual choice and not a screw-up. @@TheOriginalFuzz
Hi Fuzz, unfortunately it looks like we won’t be getting The Abyss here in the UK, I think there is an issue with one scene which the BBFC does not like and Cameron will not allow it to be cut, I will have to get it on import.
Thank you for a fantastic channel👌 I have a question about 4k blu rays.. i have watched a lot of blu ray vs 4k comparisons but one thing that i have noticed is that really new movies i dont see any difference at all. A little bit in the lightning maybe but the regular blu ray looks almost exactly the same. What are your thoughts about this?
Well the short answer is that it really just depends on the film. Every film is different in how it was made and shot. Lots of different variables in play. But here's the longer answer... Often, newer movies are not true 4K native transfers... they are 2K upsamples. This is especially true of movies that use a lot of CGI (like Marvel movies) -- because the CGI can usually only be rendered at 2K, not 4K. So you may not see a huge difference between blu and 4K with a number of contemporary movies that use a lot of CGI. However, also keep in mind that it's not just about the increased resolution with 4K... it's also about the High Dynamic Range and Wider Color Gamut. So even if the level of detail doesn't seem like a big difference between 4K and blu, you will get more accurate colors on 4K, and you'll be able to see a lot more detail in darker scenes (like night-time scenes) than you would on a blu ray, due to the HDR (whereas you might get some black crushing on blu ray in certain dark parts of the film, for example. Blu rays don't have HDR or WCG). Overall, yes, I do find that older movies tend to benefit a lot more from 4K restorations than newer films... and this is especially true of any films that use actual in-camera practical effects, set pieces, stunts and real-world locations. Basically, real in-camera effects and stunts look a hell o lot better on 4K than any CGI ever will. But there are some newer exceptions too, like Top Gun Maverick or Matrix Resurrections (both of which I would consider to be demo-worthy, reference quality newer 4K movies). Both of those films were shot using 6K and 8K digital cameras that were then downsampled to 4K... and both of those films limited the use of CGI in favor of more practical stunts and effects... so they look ridiculously good on 4K. But, you may not notice the difference between formats as much with, say, a Marvel or DC movie with a ton of CGI. Finally, there is one other thing to consider: Our own eyes. It actually took a little time for my eyes to adjust to the 4K format (like 8-10 months)... before I was able to truly appreciate everything 4K has to offer. When I first got into collecting 4K, I didn't see as much of a difference as I do now, just generally-speaking. But these days, I can usually identify a 4K release (newer or older films) almost immediately, just from looking at it for a couple minutes. Anyway, I hope this helps a bit. I was very un happy with Arrows Tremors 4k restoration. It looked like they just transfered the bluray 1080 to the 4k disc... especially noticeable in opening scene.
I'm sorry to hear you were disappointed. I was just revisiting my copy last night, and I think Tremors looks awesome in 4K. Now granted, I don't think I ever saw any blu-ray releases, since I hadn't seen the film since the 90s prior to picking up the Arrow 4K version a couple years back. But it definitely looked like a solid 4K restoration to me, and in ways that go beyond the capabilities of blu ray (not just in the level of detail, but also with the wider color gamut and high dynamic range, attributes that are unique to 4K). Plus, the bonus features are fantastic.
27:46 Man, I would love all of the James Cameron films except for Avatar I can't stand avatar to get those 4K releases.. as far as them. Redoing T2 They would just have to include that in the Terminator box set. I'm not going to rebuy by that. I've already got the 4K and the Blu-ray. I'm not going to rebuy by that just to get a different version of the 4K film. But definitely all stellar picks. Mean streets is a good movie for me. It's three and a half out of five stars. I really really wish they would release a 4K restoration on Dick Tracy (I even made a video on it) that is at the top of my wish list along with many others 😂.. Twister is another one I can't wait for the potential on them doing a Dolby Atmos surround sound would be mind blowing 🤯...
Apparently, the German mediabook blu ray release of Twister (from Turbine) actually has an Atmos mix. It's still only blu ray, but I'm sure it sounds amazing. Still, I'll hold off for the 4K release to get the full meal deal. But I'm excited for the year's upcoming releases. Thanks for watching man! Twister is the reason I clicked on this. To hear it as a “rumored” release is what I figured. It’s been “rumored” to be released on 4k for 3 years in a row now. It’s not happening
I'm guessing you're not very familiar with Bill Hunt. He's a credible source who's been in the business for a long time. I'm reminded of all the people who were absolutely convinced The Abyss would never happen either... and yet it is happening. 4K releases take time. There's a lot involved, and there can be a lot of complications along the way with licensing, finding the best source materials, performing the restoration, getting the proper approvals, etc. Many different variables. Just because it takes a few years doesn't mean it's "not happening." It took us 10 years to get The Abyss in an HD or better format. Not to mention, Warner Bros has a fairly decent track record of releasing their catalog titles on 4K... maybe not as quickly as we'd like. But we are getting titles from them. I'm sure Twister is in the works -- especially given that Twister was the first-ever DVD released and the fact that there's a new Twister movie coming out.
I noticed the IMDB rating seemed pretty decent (in my view, anything above a 6 usually has the potential to be quite good). Really happy to see Walter Hill's films getting the 4K treatment. Thanks for watching!

I would've loved to have seen that tour. I can remember all the press for the concert film... it was a pretty big deal at the time, if I remember right. I was right on the cusp of being old enough for my parents to be ok with me going to concerts (I would actually see my first concert a year later, in 1984 -- Bryan Adams' Reckless tour). And to this day, going to concerts is my favorite thing to do. Now my wife and I are passing on the torch to our son. We go to a lot of concerts as a family lol (last year alone we saw The Cure, Tears for Fears, Peter Gabriel, Duran Duran, Crowded House and Bryan Adams).
I want all the Cameron. I'd especially like to see a release of The Terminator in 4K. That Stop Making Sense, though! I'm still a huge Talking Heads fan. I remember going to see the original release in the theater back in 1984 and caught it last year, as well, and can't wait to get a copy of my own. I'm hoping there is a Purple Rain 4K in the works for the 40th anniversary of it's release this summer, but I haven't heard anything about that. I picked up The Abyss, Aliens, Avatar - all in 4K digital and Arrow is shipping both Conan promos like now. Passed on True Lies, but should have snagged it. Abyss, Aliens and Avatar are 4K streams, but both Conans are 4K discs. As far as the rest, I think I tallied half of your picks, either digitally and in-hand by the end of the week. I want Aliens and the Abyss in 4K. I also want all the old James Bond movies in 4K. Why do we not have “From Russia with Love” in 4K? As long as we are wishing, how about a better transfer of Terminator 2 on 4K? That really needs to be redone and rereleased.
I'm guessing we'll be getting the rest of the James Bond movies on 4K disc at some point... From what I understand, I believe we already have 4K scans done of all the Bond films that are available to watch digitally via streaming. So I would think we would eventually get disc releases for those titles.

Conan keeps getting pushed around its odd. I read they sold out of them all already and have to make more. I have had a few emails from Amazon about it and now it says it wont be out til end of FEB!! I am so mad....
Oh wow - I didn't even notice that. But sure enough, I see it's been pushed back to Feb 20 on my Amazon pre-order. That sucks. Apparently, Arrow didn't plan very well for this.
Yeah pre-orders may not go live until a little closer to the March 12 release date. I've noticed that a lot with Disney... there doesn't seem to be as much lead time on their releases (between when the listings go live and the release dates). I think the pre-order listings for Titanic and the Avatar Collectors editions only went live about a month before the release date, if I remember right. So I'm guessing we'll see the listings for those within the next few weeks, or maybe beginning part of Feb.

As someone who’s from across the pond from you, there’s some films here that I wasn’t aware of even though my husband an I are of a similar age and matured with wonderful movies like fine wine (we like to think). It’s a great hobby that we both enjoy together. It’s interesting seeing how different Arrow Films output is between the US and UK despite being a British company. Sadly the recent US releases and announcements are more interesting for me (not into Horror) and getting hold of Witness (one of my favourite films) is not going to be cheap or easy. Oh ok! Yeah, I didn't get the comic reference at all... not familiar with it. As for the Arrow releases differing between US and UK, yeah that just comes down to licensing. Arrow may have been granted the rights to release a film in one region, but not the other. They probably just didn't have the rights to release Witness in the UK, for example. But maybe someone else does who just hasn't released it yet (like Second Sight). Licenses are changing hands all the time... usually a boutique will be licensed a title for a few years at a time, and then the title can sometimes go to another company after that. I don't know a ton about it, but I do know that film licensing can get pretty complex. For what it's worth, I feel the same way over here in the US -- I often find quite a few releases from Arrow I'm interested in that are UK only, so I end up buying the imports from smaller indie retailers. I always feel fortunate when they put out a US release of something I'm excited about, since it often seems like I'm more into the UK-only titles. The Conan 4k is too expensive, almost $60 USD. Someone commented that True Lies 4k is not a very good transfer do to some issues with Cameron using AI to fix the 4k version of True Lies. I have yet to see on pre-order anywhere. Anyhow thanks for your reviews. 🤔
Thanks for watching! Yeah it definitely pays to pre-order from Amazon sometimes, because the prices can drop a bit during the pre-order period, and Amazon has their lowest price guarantee. I pre-ordered the Conan Chronicles set about a month and a half ago, and at one point in Dec., the price dropped to like $42.99, so that's the price I'm getting it for (which is a pretty good deal for two 4K movies). But I did notice the price has since gone back up to $58. I would keep an eye on that listing though, because the price may go back down between now and release. Amazon's prices can fluctuate quite a bit sometimes.
Yes absolutely! I haven't even seen the film yet, but I really want to. It's definitely on my list of highly-anticipated 4k releases for newer films. I'm sure we will get it eventually... it's just a matter of how long. Hopefully we'll see pre-order listings emerge for this in the next few months.
I read The Digital Bits religiously, but must have missed the bit (pun intended) about Twister. That’ll sound phenomenal in Atmos. I’m hoping for a few more M. Night Shyamalan titles (Signs and The Village) and Band of Brothers / The Pacific.
The Twister comment wasn't an official statement or anything, I don't think... Bill Hunt said it during a stream on another RU-vid channel I was watching that he was appearing on. I can't even remember which one now (I think it was back in early Dec). But it was kind of an unofficial "wink wink." Lol. And I'd love to see both Signs and the Sixth Sense on 4K. M. Night gets a lot of crap sometimes, but I really like his work overall. He makes interesting movies. They're not all bangers, but I've enjoyed enough of them to consider myself a fan.

Your mention of concerts on 4k made me curious about my BluRay of Eagles Farewell 1 Tour, Live from Melbourne. My new player is the first one that will play the DTS 5.1 sound. And the upscale (by the player) is awesome! But there’s a small skip during “Boys of Summer” that has been there before. I want this in 4K! I looked on Amazon for it but couldn’t find it (in 4K). The picture on the standard BluRay is good enough and if it’s not to be released on 4K, I’ll probably just get another one. But do you know if it’s been released on 4k, or ever will be?
Yeah I have that same title, and it is a fantastic concert blu ray. It has not been released on 4K... and I'm not really expecting it to be. There are literally only like 3-4 music titles of this sort that have made it to 4K as of right now. And part of the reason for that is because 4K restorations are very expensive to perform. So I wouldn't expect to see too many catalog music concert releases on 4K. That said, The Eagles is one of the biggest classic bands out there, so it's always possible they could eventually reissue this title in 4k. But I wouldn't plan on it for most music releases. That blu ray may be the best we get. But for what it's worth, I think it would make for a great 4K upgrade as well. I would buy the Farewell 1 tour in a heartbeat on 4K.
That Eagles concert is awesome. I haven't noticed a glitch in Boys of Summer, though. Getting it in 4k would be great but I'm pleased with it in HD. DVD quality concert videos are almost unwatchable. I'd rather just play the CD or mp3 files. The DTS 5.1 also sounds better than stereo, from the ones I've watched at least.
@@frommatorav1 There wasn’t a problem with the disc until I had watched it too many times. The glitch during Boys of Summer is my fault. I should’ve kept the disc safer and cleaner. When I said “…that has been there before “. I meant when I watched it on other players. I’ve already ordered a new BluRay from Amazon.
I do like those films and have both of them on 4K, but I didn't mention them because they weren't part of the original Alien anthology/quadrilogy box set (which was released before Prometheus and Covenant were made). The main thing I was getting at was that we need Alien 3 and Resurrection in 4K. But it would also be cool if they established a new Alien box set that includes Prometheus and Covenant. Yeah Clint rules! I really want all the Dirty Harry films on 4K (which I wouldn't be surprised if we end up seeing sometime this year). Seems like we're seeing quite a few Clint films coming to 4K.... Play Misty for Me, Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, The Eiger Sanction, etc. It's good to see Clint's work getting some love on 4K. I'm sure Pale Rider is probably on the horizon too.
Not a whole lot for me. Conan Chronicles was the biggest one, but Amazon and Blu-ray websites now have it as a Feb 20th release. Got my notification of not knowing when Amazon will ship out my pre-order. Put a damper on my mood. Cameron films I was really excited about until I started seeing screenshots of the digital version. Yeah I am not paying full price for that mess. I will pick those up on sale or the very least until disc comparisons come out. Iam a Martial Arts and Jackie Chan fan so I am looking forward to The Project A Collection being released by 88 Films. Oddly enough I am looking forward to Little Darlings from Vinegar Syndrome/Cinematographe. Making the leap from VHS to 4K. Columbia Classics Vol 4. Martial Arts again The Heroic Trio and Executioners from Criterion, but I will wait until July to get.

@@stephenmkeer Oh no problem at all! I totally get it. I've heard others mention the mediabook release in the context of 4K as well. I think the Atmos mixes throw a lot of people off, since those are usually only found on 4K discs. Though as a side note, Turbine is a great company. I have a couple of their releases, and I've been really impressed with the quality.
I'm not sure yet, but it seems like pre-order links for Disney titles often don't appear until a little closer to the release date (compared to other studios/companies). With other studios, the pre-order links can go live a few months in advance. But with Disney, I think we only had like a month lead time with the Titanic and the Avatar pre-orders. So i'm thinking it could be a few more weeks before those pre-orders go live. But who knows... maybe we'll hear something sooner. As soon as I see those pre-order links, I'll be sharing them in a community post here.

I got to see the Abyss in theaters for the one night event and it was excellent. I hadn't seen the movie for the better part of 15 years so it was really like seeing it for the first time again, especially because I had never seen the directors cut (although I think I prefer the theatrical cut personally). Very very very good looking restoration and the spotty CGI of the water stream is really the only part that doesn't entirely hold up. Everything else looks great. I am a little bit bummed about the cover art/poster for the 4k version though. Although I think the color pallet is great, it's been given the floating head treatment which is a shame because the original is FANTASTIC. Just takes away from some of the mysterious nature. Still grabbed my free poster from the theater event though lol. Either way, this has been on my list since there were even rumors of a 4k release. Day 1 pick up for me.
Yeah the floating heads aren't the most appealing type of treatment for art... seems a bit lazy on their part. The original poster art would've probably been a little more appropriate, I think. Although I do like the colors, like you said. But I can live with new art overall... especially considering how long we've waited for The Abyss to show up on blu-ray/4K. I'm just happy we're finally getting it. I do like the extended version more though... I really like the darker, added context surrounding the aliens... with the giant tsunami, etc. Thanks for watching and sharing your experience... It sounds awesome. Yes! I was super happy that we got 3 Days of the Condor in 4K. It turned out great too! That's one of my favorites of his. I discovered your channel in the past month and have been enjoying your videos very much. I share many of the same taste in films as you. I'm very excited for 2024 but also a little nervous at the same time. 2023 was indeed a spectacular year for physical media and if all indications pan out, '24 promises to top it all and that's why I'm nervous lol. Am I going to be able to afford it all? Hopefully. Fellow RU-vidr In Search of Physical Media made a video recently where he alluded to "big" things happening. He's been talking about Disney a lot lately and that's the ONE studio who could probably blow our minds this year. Too many Disney and Fox titles to contemplate for upgrades. Warner may also come out from behind and give us a bunch of good stuff but I'm a little less optimistic about them. Fingers crossed! Oh, and BTW, I streamed Th Abyss on Amazon and it looked awesome in 4K. Can't wait for the discs.
Now i'm gonna have to go check out James' channel and most recent videos and see what you're referring to lol. Personally, I'm not expecting much from Disney beyond the Cameron films, but maybe James has heard otherwise? I hope they surprise us, but their track record with physical media in recent years has been pretty bad. They've just been sitting on a massive vault of killer titles they own, but are not doing anything with. I would love to be surprised and see Disney suddenly start releasing the big titles on 4K that we've wanted for years. But I feel like we have a better shot with WB this year than with Disney. Hopefully, they both step it up a bit more! But I know exactly what you mean about being flooded with new releases. It really can be a little hard on the wallet sometimes, especially when we get a bunch of great titles all at once, within just a few weeks of each other. I find I definitely have to prioritize certain titles over others at times... at least in terms of getting them right when they first come out. Sometimes i have to hold off for a few months on some titles. The Fall months are usually the worst LOL! Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
Yeah the last couple years have been awesome for 4K. I can't wait to see what else we get in the coming year. I sure would like to see Disney get its act together and start releasing all those great 20th Century Fox and Touchstone Pictures films on 4K. We need more Tony Scott on 4K!! Lol! That's a good question. Hard to say. I believe those films are under Disney's control, and they haven't been very good about delivering a lot of catalog titles in 4K. But I agree it would be great to have those on 4K.
@TheOriginalFuzz Alot of good 4k movies are coming! It would be a mistake for Disney not to release this on 4K format there's money here I mean cash cow! I don't even have Disney plus I'm not and will not get Disney plus I rather have it on physical media. Alot of people out there still don't have a Disney plus. Tron in 4K must have good thing they have already Wizard Of Oz the classic in 4k its beautiful.

But there's a reason Disney is on my shit list right now... they have the rights to a massive vault of titles they're just sitting on they're not doing anything with (not even on their streaming service). Tons of 20th Century Fox and Touchstone Pictures movies, for example, that haven't received a 4K release. Disney has easily been the worst company for physical media out of all the major studios since 4K came onto the scene. Disney put all its eggs in the streaming basket, and now that has kind of backfired on them. So I'm hoping they're learning from all this and returning to embracing physical media more. But it's not clear what their plans are for all these great titles beyond releasing the Cameron films on 4K. I won't use Disney Plus either.
Absolutely! We just need Disney to get their act together on physical media and address consumer demand. They're sitting on a goldmine of titles that they could really be cleaning up with and making a lot of money from.
its a shame about true lies, i enjoyed watching it for the first time. but the 4k felt uncanny at times hahaha. i hear that aliens and the abyss are a bit better so thats good
The Hitcher is taking sooooo long. I'm trying to put it out of my mind all together. I'm most excited for The Boogens from Kino and Trick or Treat (1986) from Synapse. Trick or Treat is supposed to be out by mid 2024. That one is taking forever too. It was announced last April or May I think. I wasn't too excited for Footloose but after watching my Blu-ray of it last night, I think I need the upgrade after all. I was also really excited to hear about Little Darlings finally coming to Blu-ray from a Vinegar Syndrome partner label. I already pre-ordered that one
I'm really excited about the new Vinegar Syndrome sub-label. While I wasn't personally interested in Little Darlings, I'm very interested to see what other titles they put out on that label. That Little Darlings edition looks really nice... they're like cloth-bound mediabooks or something. That sounds awesome! And the way VS described the new label (Cinématographe), it sounds like a lot of tiles they plan to put out under it could be right up my alley. I know they are announcing another release from Cinématographe tomorrow, so I'm excited to see what's next. Also, I too am interested in Trick or Treat from Synapse. They tend to take their time over there, and they don't release a ton of titles each year (it's just two guys at Synapse -- very small label), but they've got one of the best guys in the business for film restoration (Don May Jr.). I think their restorations are top-notch, and I've been very impressed with everything I've ever bought from Synapse (like the Argento films, for example). Thanks for watching!

Well this next part might really wig you out then: I actually even like the Grindhouse Planet Terror/Deathproof double feature more than Kill Bill (though I don't dislike Kill Bill... it just doesn't rank quite as high for me personally. But I'll certainly take Kill Bill over pretty much any of Tarantino's later movies).
I'll get Stop Making Sense. A24 did a nationwide theatrical release of their restoration a few months ago. But I thought why pay for tickets, gas, and parking when I can buy the eventual 4K for about the same price. Plus, I can dance and sing along in the privacy of my own home!
