Top 10 Most Broken Blue Cards in MTG

Blue is infamous amongst all of the colors of Magic for having a very complex history in terms of balance. The color was initially very overtuned, to the point that the earliest years of the game were almost entirely dominated by Blue cards and decks. While this has since been corrected, in eternal formats, Blue still has access to some of the strongest cards the game has ever seen. Today, we’re going to go over not only some of Blue’s best cards, but some of the most broken pieces of cardboard Wizards has ever released.

Concerning Ancestral Recall back in Alpha, it was the only member of the "boon cycle" that was printed at rare (the other four were at common); they knew it was powerful, so they wanted to keep its prevalence lower, but they also never envisioned Magic becoming what it became and so having those rare, high-impact cards was something they were fine with.
@BeaglzRok1
@BeaglzRok1 8 месяцев назад
I sometimes wonder what a reimagined boon cycle would be like. Black could get something like "target creature gets -0/-3 and you gain 3 life," Blue could get "Scry 3," and White could get "tap three nonland permanents," Green could have "Put 3 +1/+1 counters on target creature," and Red could have... Dark Ritual but R -> RRR.

@BeaglzRok1 I love idea of scry 3 or tap 3 target permanets, +3/+3 is amazing idea too, but it must be in sorcery speed or it would be busted. Black feels underwhelming and Red is busted. Red should have like exile 3 cards and cast 1 of them.
@enlongjones2394

And on the other side of things, that same cycle had Healing Salve. One of the worst cards ever printed, as I understand it. 3 life is nowhere near the same power level as 3 power, 3 damage, 3 mana, or 3 cards.

For Gush, you could it's bounce effect on Mystic Sanctuary, a non-basic Island that enters tapped unless you control 3 other islands, but if it enters untapped, you return an instant or sorcery from your graveyard to the top of your deck. This would allow you to infinitely recur gush so long as you never dip below 3 islands on board, and if you bounced other sanctuaries, well, you get the Idea...

I feel like FoW should’ve been in the top 5 at least. It literally holds formats together, and the only reason it isn’t banned is BECAUSE it holds formats together.
@Xepscern
@Xepscern 8 месяцев назад
To sorta counter that, Force of Will is actually kinda worse in more "fair" Magic with much less card draw and less one turn combos. 5 mana counter that could be cast for free but only if you two-for-one yourself would be strong but also force you to be very much in Blue, something you can only get away with in Legacy The reason Force of Will dominates in Legacy is the context, both in the presence of that one turn combos that need FoW to hold the format together, and the far higher quality of Blue cards, especially Blue draw spells. Force is strong, but the context of Legacy is where is really shines. Plus there's just so many utterly busted Blue cards that even FoW has competition.
@ecpracticesquad4674
@ecpracticesquad4674 8 месяцев назад
@@Xepscern5 mana pitch spells are currently one of the biggest complaints in modern. Yes, Fury and Solitude come with bodies in the right situation, but they still see play in all formats they are legal in because of their evoke. And unless you’re specifically trying to go full pitch in a 5c list, the balance of cards needed to pitch to FoW consistently isn’t that hard to find, even without all of Legacy’s cantrips.
@roguebanshee
@roguebanshee 8 месяцев назад
Without FoW both Legacy and Vintage would have a much higher concentration of all-in Turn 1 combos. It prevents both formats from being _too_ broken simply by existing, even if it's hard to get a full playset you always have to consider the existence of the card, making all-in plays a lot less attractive (even if they're still possible). Especially in comparison to Daze. While Daze changes how Legacy and Vintage can play out, FoW allows the formats to _exist_ in the first place.
@UnuUO
@UnuUO 8 месяцев назад
@@Xepscern there’s a reason they haven’t printed FoW into Modern. An all-purpose counterspell that only requires you to pitch a card is still incredibly broken, even if you’re losing card advantage. The ability to stop your opponent’s most impactful plays while not having to hold up mana can’t be understated. It is absurdly powerful
@dstreetz91
@dstreetz91 8 месяцев назад
Force really isn't broken if you aren't stopping combo's that give someone an instant win. Yes, it's zero mana to counter while pitching a card. If that was in standard it really wouldn't be amazing unless the environment had cards so powerful that resolving them meant you won on the spot and those cards had no other good answers. In legacy and vintage it's worthwhile because if you sit down for game 1 an opponent could be charbelchering you for 50 damage on turn 1 if you don't have force of will or using a lethal spellchain for tendrils of agony. If it didn't exist legacy and vintage still exist, however, the banlists for both formats would be far larger. Lion's eye diamond would easily be banned in legacy for example. They didn't print FoW into modern because they made an alternative version to stop combo decks. Force of negation is basically the same as force of will for stopping combo unless the combo consists of only creatures, but purely creature based combo doesn't really exist in competitive formats like modern.

One of the best upsides of time walk is also that it doesn't exile itself. Most extra turn cards exile themselves. This can lead to recurring or copying the spell from the graveyard.

I personally consider Ancestral Recall to be the best card ever printed for one reason: There is never a time in the game where it isn't useful. Drawing three cards for one mana is obscenely powerful, and it's one of those spells where as soon as you draw it, you play it because the value you get is impossible for any other card to replicate. And before anyone says, "It wouldn't be useful if casting it will deck you out", be honest: How often will that happen? So infrequently that it might as well be an instance where it'll never happen.

Oh people have decked people out by targeting opponents with ancestral in vintage particularly oath of druid decks. Besides that there are bad times to draw ancestral in vintage. If you have no other blue cards it is now a target for pyroblast. Always a nice mental misstep target too. It also quickly becomes worse the more tax effects are on the field like sphere of resistance, thorn of amethyst, and trinisphere. 2 mana to draw 3 is still good, but once you get to 3 mana to draw 3 that is remarkably fair in vintage. No one is in a rush to merchant scroll for ancestral recall.

This channel will never recover from that time Yugioh twitter discovered the Gush book some guy wrote back in 2010 for a format that basically doesn't exist anymore. Gush is a strong card. It should not be unbanned in Legacy, and unrestricting in Vintage is also somewhat questionable. But there are a *lot* of restricted blue cards in Vintage, plus plenty of unrestricted blue cards that see way more play than Gush (Mindbreak Trap, Flusterstorm, and most recently Lorien Revealed, are all top 20 Vintage spells that get zero mention here, while Gush doesn't break the top 50). It's hard to argue that Gush is one of the strongest draw spells in the game when basically every Vintage deck will choose to run Ancestral/Dig Through Time/Treasure Cruise/Narset/various tutors and cantrips instead, leaving Gush as just a glorified 2nd copy of Gitaxian Probe/5th copy of Street Wraith in Doomsday alone (except those other cards can actually win the game for Doomsday on turn 1).
@dstreetz91
@dstreetz91 8 месяцев назад
Here's the deal with gush. It has been restricted, unrestricted, restricted, and unrestricted multiple times because of how stupid the card is. As a 1 of it is held back because you can't build around 1 of cards usually unless they are just that powerful like yawg's will or something. As a 4 of it fundamentally changes vintage and how people build decks. People run dig through time and such over it because you don't really have to build around them just use fetchlands and stuff and it's castable, which is enough. In some deck not designed to abuse gush it's mediocre in comparison. In a deck that is trying to abuse gush though it is pretty dumb what zero mana draw 2 can do.

This is a great list. My only quibble is a card like Mystical Tutor prob shouldn't make the list, even for nostalgia reasons. This could make room for a card like Treasure Cruise/Dig Through Time, that was broken in all formats (well it was just okay in Standard but absurd in Modern and still broken on the B&R List, or something like Counterbalance that was broken in Modern/Legacy
@dstreetz91
@dstreetz91 8 месяцев назад
Mystical tutor is that powerful though. It tutors for almost anything in combo decks besides lion's eye diamond/black lotus for a single mana and that is often all a combo deck requires to go off. The versatility can't be understated either because it can be engine cards, protection cards, or fast mana.

TBH, I'd argue Counterspell (yes, the UU one) should've gotten a mention here, even as a simple honorable mention. If you consider it as removal, look at what it's up against from other colors: Black can kill a creature for the same price, but those cards usually have a downside (for instance, Doom Blade (1B) only hits non-black creatures), or for less with a significant drawback (You Are Already Dead (B) requires the creature to already be damaged). White can exile a creature for less, but its controller gains something in return (Path to Exile, it's literally free ramp. I've won because opponents have path'd me before). Green can remove specifically an artifact or enchantment at that price (Naturalize, (1G)). For that same price, Blue can remove... *Literally any card type with no downside to speak of*. That's insane. Before anyone says "but muh timing restrictions", you want to interact at instant speed anyway, never at sorcery speed if you can avoid it, so Counterspell is literally just removal that also reads "this card's ETB effects are cancelled. because FUCK YOU.".

The only 2 cards above it that aren’t banned in vintage are Daze and Brainstorm, so I could see arguments for being higher than those, but not the rest. While Daze is more narrow in its use its effect is better for the cost (though the two being at no.9 and no.8 are essentially interchangeable). Brainstorm too is far more proactive while having great defensive utility. Overall while FoW is incredibly important, it’s just not as strong as the rest of the list above it.

@@poiriI would put it above daze instantly. Daze is weaker than gitaxian probe too I don't get why probe isn't here and crappy daze is. There are 2 cards I know that are pretty broken, but not THAT level of crazy, lol. 1: Mind's Desire - in the right deck configuration, this card can put your strongest cards into play. Performing such a combo with Storm is unquestionably difficult, but the reward usually outweighs the costs it takes to kick it off. 2: Gitaxian Probe - "There is no Knowledge that is not Power." This card is the epitome of this saying. The first step-cousin of Thoughtsieze and Mental Missteps' twin-brother, both were born ready to break the game, this one allows you to know what is going to happen ahead of time and puts you ahead by letting you draw a card, paying for itself each time you use it! What could possibly go wrong!? Fun Combo: Mana Severance + Mind's Desire Set-up: after you achieve a high Storm County, play Mana Severance and remove all the land cards from your deck, seeing as well what you have to play. Then, play Mind's Desire to bring out everything your deck has!
@satansamael666

Probe is easily the most busted card arguably more than Recall. Free vs 1 mana is huge and the information gained is just unnecessary gravy they added just because. Desire is kinda ok considering just how much mana it costs, a 6 cost should just win the game. The cards I’m surprised not being on the list is Thoracle. Like the cheapest win con that is easy to set up and no preconditions needed to worry about is just awesome. Like it’s so good it warps a lot of formats, especially very powerful formats where curves are already low and mana is easy to rush out.
@dstreetz91
@dstreetz91 8 месяцев назад
@@satansamael666I can get thassa's oracle not being here because it's the payoff, not the enabler. The enabler usually being doomsday, but it depends on format. Probe though I would slam on this list over daze. It isn't even close daze has never been banned anywhere or considered to be banned, but probe got banned everywhere and restricted in vintage. The weirdest thing is how long it took because I remember playing the card and it felt like cheating. Just oh see you have nothing you're dead. Oh see you have some countermagic? Well now I know to play around it. All for 2 life. Mind's desire certainly not top 10 though as much as I love the card the UU in the cost holds it back. At 5U I could definitely see it though because then it's castable off something like a single lotus petal or land.

Ancestral Recall has even more upsides that no one ever mentions. Sure, u say it take 5 mana for the same effect or 4 at sorcery speed but Jace’s Ingenuity n Concentrate lack something Ancestral Recall has that can be an upside or even a downside; it is “target player” so in a multiplayer format u can u it for an ally or another player that u need to help u beat the main threat. Or u can use it to finish off someone with mill if they get too low on cards like some anti Doomsday tech or something. But u also can’t use Ancestral Recall if u have an effect that is giving u shroud… but I can only think of 1 creature off the top of my head that does that n I can think of a few things that give hexproof so just use those n boom, no downsides

Here's something scary: Blue is not seen as the strongest color of Commander. People will dismiss this, but Green has overtaken its place, as it got so much going for it besides Ramp. Stax? Collector Ouphe. Draw? Regal Force. Artifact Destruction? Naturalize. Treasure? Bootleggers' Stash Name a deck strategy, and there's likely a card in Green. Blue really hasn't gotten much new support that doesn't rely on another color. Practically bread crumbs compared to the other colors. Red and White got support to cover their weaknesses in Impulse Draw and cards like Esper Sentinel and Smothering Tithe. Is there ramp available that's for Mono Blue that isn't an artifact that's generic or relies on Artifacts? it is absolutely the strongest color in CEDH, you get access to the easiest win in Thoracle combos alongside a multitude of other cards. Green is arguably the worst color in CEDH because most of its wincons either aren’t fast enough or aren’t good enough, and it hasn’t gotten the same amount of insane pushed cards that other colors have gotten in recent years. @@joebaumgart1146 Jace might suck now, pretty much like every other card released 10+ years ago that was a staple on decks, but the fact that it has a built in Brainstorm and can lock your game alone is very powerful, not considering that blue decks have all sorts of counterspells for bolts

How is Time Twister, one of the Power 9, so low on here?

Timetwister is notoriously not as broken as the rest of the power 9, to the point a lot of people think it shouldn't be part of it.

Thoughtseize is far, far worse than misstep. Zero mana counterspell in formats that revolve around 1 mana spells for the most part is stupid broken. Paying 1 mana to make someone discard something that they invest no mana in is far, far worse in terms of powerlevel.

Daze is possibly the best counterspell in legacy and would be too in vintage if moxens didn’t exist. Basically daze is broken in formats that don’t play tons of fast mana

Hey, long time legacy and vintage player here, and I think you really fail to understand FoW. Despite seeing tons of play in decks that can afford to run it, it's really not a "good" card so much as a nessicary evil. Forces purpose is stoping turn 1 or 2 combos from winning the game (or helping them win the game), but that's about it. Against non-combo/"fair" decks, they are a near automatic board out. 2 for 1ing yourself is almost always a bad play, as card advantage is increasingly valuable in okder formats, due to the higher strength of individual cards. Using force to stop a removal spell is a noobie trap, unless you are truly desperate (at which point you've likely lost the game anyway).

ffs, your lists get worse every time. you took the easy way & reguritated the "power nine" as most broken. that's what day 1 noobs trying to sound like the know m:tg would do. FoW should be higher, timetwister shouldn't be on the list. Show & Tell, Dream Halls, & Time Spiral all deserve spots over this list. mental misstep is the king of being sideboarded out bc your opponent outsmarted you. it's like you looked at 1-2 decklists and just picked their free spells.
