I'd agree with Batman and Rocky, but the rest are near misses. Great characters, but not quite iconic. Gandalf and Harry Potter had niche audiences. Although Harry may be more universally known. Jack Sparrow, also a great character, but not quite the appeal of Indiana Jones.
I love Citizen Kane as much as the next guy, but Charles Foster Kane is not more iconic than brilliant characters like Gandalf, The Joker, Harry Potter, Jack Sparrow, Marty McFly, Rocky Balboa, Ellen Ripley, Gollum, Terminator, Tyler Durden, or The Dude.
Brendan Geier Yes, and this list named several of them. Norman Bates, Darth Vader, Dorothy, Vito Corleone, etc. But in this day in age, Charles Kane isn't an iconic character. He is a great character, but not iconic.
They didn't receive any votes by the members. That said, if I were a member and I had to vote for a character from *GWTW,* it would NOT have been Scarlett O'Hara. She's too much of a bitch. I'd have voted for Clark Gable's character.

Yeah but watchmojo is horrible with spoilers Like for example when they were naming sad deaths they name the character who dies spoiling an important part for a fan trying to catch up. What they should do is just name the movie or game and then explain which character died so that they can skip it.
Todd Shaw you gotta remember just how many icons there are in cinema. One list can't hold 'em all.PS William Wallace was an actual person, not just a character
I think Jack Sparrow deserves a place as well. He is the sole reason that franchise made over r billion worldwide and over 1.5 billion in dvd sales. He was the most poular cosplay costume for many years. Singlehandedly resurrected the pirate genre and became the most famous pirate of recent years. Oh and also brought joy to millions worldwide.
The list started with Forrest Gump! If you know cinema a little bit, you know Sparrow is not in the same league. Depp acting as Sparrow was not that great neither.
I actually think I just made the ultimate list: 1. James Bond 2. Darth Vader 3. Vito Corleone 4. Indiana Jones 5. Marry Poppins 6. Mr. Bin 7. Shrlock Holmes 8. Harry Potter 9. Dorothy Gale 10. Captain Jack Sparrow Honorable Mantions: Simba Rocky Balboa The Joker Ellen Riplay Man its hard af to make those lists
BigDaddyCruz Must disagree with you, because Dart Vader was in movies in the 80's or 90's or something like that and James Bond kept appearing so it's normal that more people know him ( I have never seen a star wars movie (until the end) cuz i was born in 99 and I always tought it was a bit silly so that might be the reason
MacroM Bond is pretty a minor entity in China and Japan, but Vader is well known everywhere around those parts. Perhaps not world wide, but still a pretty big portion of the worlds population. Not certain but I would assume Vader is more iconic in Indonesia, Malaysia and South Korea as well.
***** he did more than just give the idea to Spielberg. The Indiana Jones trilogy was completely written by George Lucas, he however wanted to collaborate with his good friend Steven Spielberg.
Godzilla, Jack Sparrow, Shrek, Gollum, Harry Potter, Mary Poppins, Tarzan, Edward Cullen, Dory, Optimus Prime, Neo, Willy Wonker, Jigsaw, Spock and Batman.
Elizabeth Salvatore Yeah but I wasn't sure though. I had to look about my DVDs and think of as many characters as possible. I`m not sure about Dory, now. What about you?
I think I would have put Indiana Jones and Hans Solo as the same level of iconic character;. And 10 really isn't enough of a list to really list the truly big, iconic movie characters. James Cagney created some really iconic and awesome characters. People still do impressions of him in comedy acts. he was the original tough guy.. I guess we will never all agree on the most iconic, at this time.
If they were to have to pick a character from Back to the Future it would be a tough one because both Marty and Doc are iconic. E.T. should have made the list as #1 Everyone from every generation knows who ET is and knows the line of "ET phone home."
Bond is tough to argue against, being a main character in decades upon decades of movies, Darth Vader cannot be beaten. Even people who have never seen a Star Wars movie, which is an alarmingly high number of people lately, know the ins and outs of Vader. In my mind, Darth Vader is the only character that is instantly recognizable to an audience, whether they've seen a film involving him or not.
What about Marty McFly or Dr. Emmett Brown from Back to the Future or Captain Jack Sparrow or Superman or Batman or either Martin Brody, Matt Hooper or Quint from Jaws.
Doc and Marty were my first 2 that I thought of. I mean almost everyone knows who Doc and Marty is even if they've never seen Back to the Future in their life or at least know who the actors are. Come to think of it if Michael J. Fox or Christopher Lloyd didn't play Doc or Marty I don't know if those 2 characters would have been as iconic. I could be wrong, but those two are great actors!
+David Gunn oh because The Joker isn't one of the most iconic characters of all time? Lol you're right they put him in a lot of videos but rightfully so.
George Lucas make two memorable characters except for Anakin Skywalker that it's hard to relate this character, but maybe you can see that he has a emotional reaction of what he is becoming. He turns very angry and becoming so dark and evil that it is Darth Vader all along at the end of Revenge of the Sith. At least Christensen try hard, Darth Vader in general at Original Trilogy is one of the greatest. Not only to see Anakin to act like a whiny baby and saying weird lines that Lucas did. I don't know. The dialogue and the script is awkward and really stupid. But take it for what it is.
Felix Johnsson No Smegol, , no Jig Saw, no Jason, and no animated characters ether. Although nr. 1 is spot on, people like Norman Bats and that guy from Citizen Kane should not be one the list in my opinion. Sure, everybody knows the shower scene in Psycho, but for people who aren't kind of a big movie fan has never watch the whole movie before. Or at least not out side of the US. That also goes for Gone With The Wind, which got an honorable mention. I have never EVER met someone who knows the name of the main character in Citizen Kane. Heck, i don't even know anyone who has ever heard, or seen that film before except my self. All of these ar great movies, but when it comes to the most iconic, i'm sorry but half of these feels like a personal opinion from a movie buff.
Here's my list. Just my opinion though: 10. Vito Corleone 9. The Xenomorph 8. James Bond 7. Tony Montana 6. Gollum 5. Harry Potter 4. The Terminator 3. Jason Voorhees 2. Indiana Jones Honorable mentions: Jack Sparrow, Robocop, Gandalf, Forrest Gump, Dumbledore, Freddy Krueger, Norman Bates, Hannibal Lecter, The T-Rex from Jurassic Park, Yoda, Dorothy 1. Darth Vader
I´m glad to finally see James Bond top the list of something. Once again I don´t hear any reasons for your pick. I could name numerous iconic characters apart from the ones you´ve picked but since O don´t know the criteria, it´s hard to suggest any. By the way, I think it´s pretty obvious why Bond is number one here, but where is Lazenby, Moore and Dalton?
Hobojoe0028 thats fine, you forgot rocky and mCclane, but there should of been a list for movies that had sequels, then a list of charathers that only did 1 movie, like scarface for example, samuel l jackson pulp fiction, javier bardem no country for old men. i was just making a point, i agree with your list, but those charathers have all been in more than 1 movie, except forrest gump, dorothy was in return to oz.
I would argue that the terminator and batman shouldn't be on this list. The terminator is only known today by most young people so let because they won't STOP making terminator movies. And batman, though iconic and a bad as is truly a comic book character and belongs there more so than the big screen.
+Keona Lee-Rimpel because harry potter isn´t a deep and interesting characters at all. I love the franchise but just because of other great characters. R.I.P Alan Rickman
Raver Reviews Difficult because most people won't know enough of the truly truly great theatre actors, or theatre/film actors who have done more for the craft than most, it would be a heavily film biased list, I imagine, and unjustly so.
BBBmarko It would have to be based on most iconic actors *right now*. But that would still include a fair number of theatre/film actors, like Ian McKellen or Patrick Stewart, people like that.
1. Darth Vader 2. Bruce Wayne/Batman 3. Indiana Jones 4. Bart Simpson 5. Peter Parker/Spider-Man 6. James Bond 7. Sherlock Holmes 8. Norman Bates 9. Frankenstein’s Monster 10. Luke Skywalker Honorable Mentions R2-D2 The T-800 Mary Poppins Kal-El/Clark Kent/Superman Gandalf Hannibal Lecter Marty McFly
i truly believe you cant compile just a top 10 character list you need at least 20 with so many charcters like Rocky Harry Potter Jack Sparrow Gandalf E.T. Neo The Vega Brothers The Bride these are just some of my personal choices
10. Han Solo 9. Forrest Gump 8. Rocky 7. The little kid from pay it forward (I forgot his name) 6. Batman (Bale) 5. Dorothy 4.Bond, James Bond 3. Marty McFly 2. Indiana Jones Honorable Mentions: Pink Panther Harry Potter Charles Kane Bruce from Bruce almighty Donkey Sir lancelot of camelot ( monty python) 1. Vader
+Konrad “MonkeyPL50” .Biegun ikr? Also, Wonder Woman, Catwoman, Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson, The Hulk (he doesn't need one-liners), The Wicked Witch, Neo, Tony Stark (the king of one-liners---RDJ's version of him, at least), Dumbledore, Alice (in Wonderland), Willie Wonka, Morpheus, Nick Fury (I would say Harry Potter, but someone else already did), Valdemort, Rhett Butler, Freddy Kruger, Michael Myers... They'd need several lists to get all of them.
They need to give the late great heath ledger some respect and make the joker and least an honorable mention, although we know he deserves the #1 spot.
As you can see, most of the iconic characters wear interesting outfits and memorable costumes. Its easier for a character to get to peoples mind if they have a special "look" that separates them from any other character. I think that's very important
I disagree. James Bond is the most watched and proven time and time again most iconic character across the world. Even the 1964 Aston Martin DB4 is the worlds most iconic car. The movies still break their own records every release.
Matthew Harp I don't see anybody here considering scarface to be a masterpiece. It's a really popular film, but that doesn't make it good. Definitely not something that can be compared to the godfather.
Without a doubt, George C. Scott's portrayal of General Patton is the finest movie performance in history. Following that would be Charlton Heston's performances as Judah Ben-Hur and Moses.
1: Darth Vater 2: Tony Stark 3: Han solo 4: Jack Sparrow 5: Indiana Johns 6: Batman Man 7: Harry Potter ( the most iconic character in MODERN books) 8: Luke sky-walker 9: E.T 10: Rocky Balboa 11: The Joker 12: Jason 13: Dr. Emmet Brown 14: Logan “Wolverine” 15: Terminator I did not add Sherlock Holmes because the most iconic book character Harry Potter is the most iconic modern book character
Change Luke bc u said Han and I don’t rlly agree with Jack sparrow, he isn’t iconic , just recognisable , name 1 pirate movie that would soon go on to follow in its footsteps
What about Godzilla? People who haven't even seen any of his 29 films know who he is. Heck, you could show a black silhouette of Big G to anybody and they'd instantly recognize him. If that's not iconic, I don't know what is.
Yeah i also don't see the appeal plus they should have atleast said that michael corleone was also a contender for the 3rd spot just like they did with Han solo.

For me Vito Corleone and Joker are the most iconic characters ever, both of them won 2 Oscars. First Marlon after him Deniro. Heath Ledger and now Joaquin.
I think king kong should be on the list and gandalf I mean king kong was a revolutionary and basically everyone knows him and gandalf had many Iconic moments
Suggestions for list 2: Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Carribean franchise Count Dracula from the Dracula franchise Rocky Balboa from Rocky franchise Maverick from Top Gun Martin Brody from Jaws franchise E.T. fron e.t: the extra terrestrial Verbal from Usual Suspects Superman (Christopher Reeves) from the Superman movie franchise Jack Reacher from the Jack Reacher movie franchise Honourable mentions: King Kong, Maximus (Gladiator), Spartacus, Iron Man, Ethan Hawke, Bane (Tom Hardy, Jason Bourne, Han Solo (This list was not arranged in any particular order)
Zatoichi, The Duke, Cool Hand Luke, Chris (Magnificent 7), Godzilla, The Man with No Name, King Kong, Lassie, The Lone Ranger, the gopher, Bambi, Basil Rathbone's Sherlock Holmes; Charlie Chan, Bugs Bunny, Bullwinkle; Tarzan, Harry Callahan

I dont get why Charles Foster Kane and one other fella I never heard of made this list when Tyler Durden, Gandalf, Rocky, Marty McFly or Doc Brown, Scarface, Keysar Soze, Neo, Wolverine and so many other more memorable characters didnt make it. This is a list that should be based more on popularity than on critical acclaim.
