Metal Health by Quiet Riot? Metal Health is notable for being the first heavy metal album to reach the top spot on the Billboard 200. It made metal main stream.
+Kensei007 Yeah this is only about hard rock as others have stated..Sabbath is in this list because metal wasn't really a thing when they started and they considered themselves to be a hard rock band with a dark sound which of course formed the basis of the evolution of all types of metal.
If watchmojo allowed more than one entry per band this would probably be the top 5 1. Led Zeppelin II 2. Led Zeppelin IV 3: Led Zeppelin I 4. Black Sabbath 5. Paranoid
One album per band is a pretty dumb rule, tbh. It makes no sense. It should be the "best" of the best - regardless of the band. Why should a lower ranked album get put higher on the list than an album that was better, just because one band might have two great albums? Makes no sense
10. Slave to the Grind 9. Pyromania 8. Blizzard of Oz 7. Who's Next? 6. Appetite for Destruction 5. Back in Black 4. Machine Head 3. Van Halen 2. Black Sabbath 1. Led Zeppelin l & ll
If you look at the sales numbers, influence, album tour results, and longevity of the music I don’t know how Slippery When Wet isn’t on this list. Bon Jovi sold a million copies a week for the first 6 weeks on that album. And the number of hits on Slippery When Wet(1986) and New Jersey(1988) put both of those albums over several on this list.
It isn't about number of album sales, it's about how important, ground breaking, iconic or trendsetting the album was. Slippery When Wet had some great songs and sold a lot of copies but it didn't break any new ground or change the genre in any new or unique way.
Let's be honest, you could put 4 or 5 Zeppelin albums on this list. Also Disraeli Gears by Cream.. not exactly hard rock.. but definitely a major influence.
+Glen “Ghblunty16” Howatt When I hear "Living On a Prayer", I think of the lyrics I made up for the chorus: ♫ Oh, put some mousse in my hair/Oh, oh, squirt a little more there/Grab a comb and run it through my hair/Oh, no...you were using Nair! ♫
Great Choices, but Kiss, AC/DC, Deep Purple, Def Leppard, Gun & Roses, Ozzy, Van Halen are Metal ... that's how they were classified back in their day. Revisionist music history calls them hard rock now.
But they don't fit the modern definition of Heavy Metal. By my purer than thou art standards, the only heavy metal band that ever existed is Cannibal Corpse.
Thank you for not even taking the time to give half an opinion. If Kiss is not metal what are they? Why were considered metal back back in the day? And how is this not revisionist music history?
Up until the mid-1980's, hard rock and heavy metal were largely interchangeable terms for the same kind of music. One could arguably point to the impacts of the NWOBHM and Sunset Strip bands during their 80's prime as being when the definitions began to diverge. These days, metal is downtuned, mathy, sludgy, screamo, what-the-hell-is-this-noise, compared to when hard rock still had unexplored territory. A broader perception has become one of metal having no commercial appeal. I point to the musical evolution as only being a part of that situation. The other part of it comes courtesy of the most loathed person in NZ: It's the (white) birth rates. There are simply not the numbers of young people with an inclination towards hard rock styles, these days.
I'll say straight off that if Deep Purple aren't on this list, then it's a joke. Richie Blackmoore is a guitar god and Ian Gillan's vocals are right up there with Bruce Dickinson and Rob Halford.
The problem with having categories of music is that a lot of bands cross over into different styles of music. Led Zeppelin could be viewed as blues, rock, heavy rock or even soft rock with some of their acoustic songs. So people will always argue about what bands should and shouldn't be included in you list. Having said that I agree with you picks, however I would have put Van Halen at #2.
The latest release in this top 10 was Appetite For Destruction; 1987. So nearly 32 years have gone by without a release of anything worthy of topping these albums. I grew up in a great time for music.
If it wasn't *important* but rather *best*, I'm sure Led Zeppelin IV would fill in II's place, and 1 - Physical Graffiti would be the honorable mentions
Back in Cuba, late ‘80 I paid $200 for an “original” APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION cassette and my monthly salary was $150 , do I need to say more???, however now more mature I’ll be willing to pay twice the price for my favorite album: PANTERA’S 1994 “far beyond driven” !
Good list overall, but I think Pyromania should be higher on the list. As it influenced the sound of many glam, hair, and hard rock bands to come after. Like danger danger, Ratt, Hanoi rocks, Skid Row, etc. As well as generally changing the sound of hard rock, as many band's sounds can see a slight to noticeable change after the albums release.
I think this is a pretty good list. Anytime you make a list like this, some people are going to feel like their favorites got left off. It's a foregone conclusion that Sgt Peppers is #1. The only change I would make would be to move up Highway 61 Revisited up to number 3. From the moment it was released, it was cited as revolutionary and influential and it's songs have been countlessly covered by many artists. Dark Side of the Moon spent 917 weeks on the Billboard 200 top 200 chart so it's tough to knock that out of the #2 spot.
I had honestly just typed this message, but decided to take a quick spin through the comments to make sure I wasn't repeating anyone. Needless to say, I agree with you!
@@mockupguy3577 Rock Of Ages, Photograph, Comin’ Under Fire, Rock Rock (Til You Drop)… Pyromania was the spearhead of Hard Rock & Heavy Metal on MTV and was only kept off #1 by Michael Jackson’s Thriller. It spawned so many imitations that Def Leppard had to make Hysteria instead of “Pyromania II”. Hell yeah people remember Pyromania.
GNR Appetite for destruction and AC-DC Back in Black would have to be number 1 and 2 in my top 10 hard rock albums. Led Zeppelin is by far the best band but they're so good that you really could put all of their albums on the list.
@Gerry C I'd say LZ II is primarily hard rock with some excursions into metal and blues rock, but Pyromania & Shout at the Devil are Glam Metal and Blizzard of Ozz, Black Sabbath, & Operation: Mindcrime are Heavy Metal.
At least about rock, it's pure aids to see these videos and they rate GNR higher than The Who and Deep Purple. On what planet, in what Universe is that a reality. Watch mojo are fucking Martians with a shitty taste in music.
"We won't include metal" Deep Purple Rainbow Def Leppard (flat out calls them glam metal) Ozzy Black Sabbath ("the moment hard rock became heavy metal") Motley Crue Queensryke I get it, there's a very muddy line between hard rock and metal. So just stop trying to separate the two.
@Dafyd Maddz absolutely. It's all rock and roll. I'm a huge rocker. My tastes almost never stray from it, and although I do tend towards the heavier stuff, I listen to everything from the Stones, Beatles, CCR, Zeppelin, George Thorogood, to Alice in Chains, GnR, to Linkin Park, 3DG, to Metallica, Slayer, Lamb of God. All over the map of rock. They all offer something.
+Kenneth Rose Yeah, I don't mean to nitpick or anything it's just that I'm a music nerd so I notice they make at least one error per video. Wouldn't expect that from an information-sharing company with a designated music specialist and other contributors.
+Jasper Yangchareon You're correct Roger Glover of Deep Purple did NOT do anything on Rainbow's Long Live Rock and Roll. He Produced Down to Earth. Correct this error WatchMojo!
orphy6869 exactly. I can’t understand why the following is so hard to grasp: The most important rock bands are(not in order): Led zep Van halen Beatles Rush That’s it. Simple. No elvis, no buddy hooooolly, no pink floyd, metallica, ramones, guns & roses...
+billy brien But not one of the most important albums. Deep Purple as an example were much more important for the development Symphonic Rock, Progressive Rock, Hard Rock and Heavy Metal than AC/DC.
Nishkc Apkle wait are you serious, at each concert they do almost every song of this album are played and all the song in it have the right sound of rock.. look up for Hells bells or Shoot to thrill! thats some very good rock song and they did it after Bon s death
1. Guns N’ Roses - Appetite for Destruction 2. AC/DC - Back In Black 3. AC/DC - Highway to Hell 4. Led Zeppelin - II 5. Van Halen - Van Halen 6. Motley Crue - Too Fast For Love 7. Scorpions - Love at first Sting 8. Kiss - Kiss 9. Twisted Sister - Stay Hungry 10. Foreigner - 4
+Rainbow Rising Pyromania practically revived rock n roll in the early 80s by fusing heavy metal with pop bringing metal to the mainstream and heavily influencing many bands after that such as metallica, GnR, skid row, bon jovi etc

+WatchMojo.com ok ok.... wait.... im not really a Lynyrd Skynyrd fan.... but wtf??????????? they didnt even get an honorable mention? are you fucking kidding me???? what in the actual fuck are you smoking......
Appetite had virtually no effect on the music industry, maybe I'm a little biased considering I dont really like them, but rock died right after Appetite for destruction came out and grunge took over.
um acdc back in black is one of the highest selling albums of all time...and guns n roses appetite s the highest selling debut hard rock album....should be a lot higher
Judas Priest and Iron Maiden consistently get no respect. These lists are created by people who get their hard rock news from Rolling Stone rather than Guitar Player and who likely never even have seen these bands live.
@@Insolitus_xl Black Sabbath is considered the starting point of Heavy Metal, and they got two spots. On that point, Def Leppard certainly went mainstream with Pyromania, but they certainly were NWBHM before that. "High N Dry" is a metal force.
Thought this was Hard Rock. Worst top 10 list you've come up with. Only Led Zeppelin fits this, maybe...Deep Purple. The rest is metal of sorts & pop. Shame on you.
1- İt should have been Appetite for Destruction or Back in Black on top, they made the real change 2- I really love Blizzard of ozz but it is more Metal than Hark rock 3- Black Sabbath is Heavy metal(all albums) as you also say so why in the list? 4- Led Zeppelin is great choice but debatable between no II an IV Also I know its more blues rock but you tend to blend genres so why no Hendrix
To M Molenda, I agree with you on Guns'N'Roses on Appetite for DEstruction AND GNR Lies. Unfortunately, that was it. I couldn't get into Use your Delusion and wrote an amazingly great review on them. I gave them a O out of 5 mark and created pandemonium on Amazon. Amazon wrote to my personal email address and told me that they would delete my review.
My artists and Im only 10 Led Zeppelin Jimi Hendrix Elvis Presley Journey Dokken Firehouse John Mayer Scorpions 3 Doors down Bon Jovi Guns n Roses Ramones U2 Ozzy Ac/dc kiss Metallica
Great though the Who are, they are not HARD Rock, they are just Rock. In Rock by Deep Purple was more important than Machine Head. Pyromania may have been big in the U.S. but back home in the U.K. it was nothing.
I was hoping Boston's debut album "Boston" (1976) would make it on here at least as an honorable mention. Is currently #2 most-sold debut album ever (after Apetite), plus with songs like "More Than A Feeling" and "Foreplay/Long Time" generated a unique sound and inspirational music for its time.
+Graham Gordon Black Sabbath could be considered as more important in terms of bringing that dark sound to hard rock initially which became a key part of metal.
Appetite for Destruction was THE album for the Eighties. It was the perfect marriage between Led Zeppelin II and Never Mind the Bollocks by the Sex Pistols. Guns'N"Roses - used Zeppelin's light and shade technique and then threw in a Sex Pistols' short sharp solo. Pure guava. Wow . . .
at 10 years of age, 1969, Led Zep II was unlike anything I'd heard. The Beatles and Doors had been my go to Bands up until then, but when I heard Whole lotta love on the radio in Pop's car - it was over, I found my band.
Ritchie Blackmore was the guitarist for Deep Purple who left and formed Rainbow. He recorded Long Live Rock and Roll. Roger Glover eventually joined Rainbow.
start to finish best rock album in my opinion..every emotion is there and Rocket Queen may be the best rock song ever period.."All I ever wanted was for you to know that i care" After all the angst and paranoia on the album to end it with that lyric? Whoever's decision it was to stick Rocket Queen as track 12..... Absolute Genius.
I’m big fans of both but honestly I agree, pyromania should be higher. Both are incredible albums but pyromania was pioneering for rock. Back in black is an amazing album but I don’t think it quite touches pyromania
Good Lord, check your Deep Purple fact it wasn’t a studio that burned down. The fire was at a live gig. The band has talked about the stage curtains catching fire!
