Bob Dylan going electric. Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock. The Beatles on Ed Sullivan. Michael Jackson’s Moonwalk. Queen at Live Aid. Elvis Presley singing Hound Dog and gyrating his hips. Beethoven debuting his 9th Symphony. Nirvana on MTV Unplugged. All of these are influential moments in music history. Without moments like the Sugarhill Gang reaching the Top 40, we never would have had rappers like Kendrick Lamar or the Notorious B.I.G. Without Madonna performing Like a Virgin on the MTV Awards, we never would have had Britney Spears singing Baby One More Time. Music legends like Johnny Cash, The Who, Freddie Mercury and more mad moments that shaped music history, and changed modern music forever. WatchMojo is picking the most important moments in music history; check it out to see if your favorite music moments made the list!
If you want to see moments in music history that impacted the music industry, like Kelly Clarkson becoming the first American Idol, the launch of MTV or Apple introducing iTunes, check out our Top 10 Moments in the Music Industry: • Top 10 Landmark Moment...

Tommye Bunn Why? How are the Beatles more important than say J.S. Bach, who literally solidified tonal harmony in the history of Western music? This tonal system that Bach advanced and perfected is what almost all pop music is based on, including the Beatles. Without Bach, it’s doubtful if the Beatles could have ever created their music. What have the Beatles in comparison ever advanced in music theory? I know you may love the Beatles but that is no grounds for evaluating their musical importance.
@michaelmisanthrope
@michaelmisanthrope 5 лет назад
That's the thing about pop music. It's music for the masses. I am actually impressed that Beethoven made it on the list at all. Remember that the final movement of the 6th was based on a pop song. Don't fret. Just let us elites or sophisticates , or whatever you want to call us keep LVB to ourselves. Cheers.

Wasn't their breakthrough, just their arrival in the US. Doesn't compare to the importance of their breakthrough concert back in England, nor to most of the never-filmed events that Watchmojo can't show, like the invention of the modern musical scale in Bach's lifetime, the first independent music star in western culture (maybe Mozart) or the invention of the guitar.

Come on, Beethoven wrote the 9th all in his head. The man was deaf at the time but knew exactly what each and every note would sound like. And he wrote it for a full orchestra at that. If that doesn't grant you number one of ALL TIME, then there is no sense in even doing these lists. Not to mention that it is awesome to boot. I will grant you the Queen and Freddie spots. And the Beetles did change the face of rock. And Hendricks? The MASTER OF THE STRATOCASTER. Elvis? Well hell son. He kicked in the door and all the rest followed.

"Yesterday" breaking the World Record by being recorded by TWO THOUSAND,TWO HUNDRED different Artists. They had,simultaneously, The Top 5 in Te Billboard Chart which will never be emulated. They changed Fashion,Photography and much else bridging the gap between The USA and Britain and Europe. They sold more records than anyone else.Their songs were, mostly, different from each other and they had 3 musical genius's in the same Band....so it should have been "BEST OF THE REST" lol

As much as i hate Gangnam Style and wondered what's all the fuss with people going crazy over that when it's launched. It's actually (sadly) part of music history too (to an extend). Because music video history is part of music history at this era of modern music industry and internet. The use of internet viral marketing and influence is what make some of the artist of current genereration bloom... Sadly. I also fall for the viral when Gangnam Style launched, curiousity get the best of me too see what's all with the fuss... It's good for the laughs when i saw them, but as far as the music itself... meeh. But I do fall and help the viral by viewing and talking it... Viral music propagation goes back a very long time. Just look at the early Beatles popularity in the US. One Ed Sullivan show and they go from nobodies to the top in a matter of weeks. I don't think Psy "changed music" so much as he did what many, many artists have done over the years...utilized the technological zeitgeist (much like artists of the eighties used MTV and music videos) to produce a single popular song. Being another video based, one hit wonder is nothing new or special.

I cannot argue against the choice for each particular moment, but throwing Beethoven's presentation of his 9th symphony is not only out of place for this countdown (this should be regarding pop culture music, or music in the 20th century) but disrespectful as the composer's of the "classical" (in this case romantic) pieces have transcended time with their music being performed centuries later as to be in a list that compares music that had particular impacts only in pop culture.

Beethoven actually didnt just use intuition to compose while deaf, you can feel music and each note has it's own vibration. He felt the music and notes. If you're musically inclined you can recognise notes just by sound alone and if you play a instrument you'll be able to tell without hearing when that instrument makes a note, I play violin and can feel the music through the instrument and sometimes you can tell a note is slightly off note just by sound but by the feeling of it.
