Hi everyone! Today's video was a difficult one to do. It's about overrated fantasy series. First, I'm going to mention my 5, from the top of my head, overrated fantasy series. After that, I'm going to mention 5 overrated fantasy series most frequently mentioned according to you in my community tab.
Do note that I'm not a fan of calling something as overrated; I think it is more appropriate to call them "popular/highly praised fantasy series that didn't click with me." But that's a mouthful.
If possible, please watch it to the end as I also discussed why a series became overrated and why they should still be read!

I think what happens with some of these books (like Mistborn or Kingkiller for example) is that so many people discuss them and hype them up which raises new readers' expectations. Then, these new readers are disappointed because their expectations were so high. I know this is something I have to be careful of when viewing any popular media. I always try to go in with low expectations; doesn't always work, but definitely helps me.
@PetrikLeo

Precisely! Sometimes it's easier said than done, but this is why I always try to go in with low expectations for every book I read. Even if hype was the reason I started reading some of them! :)

I recently experienced this. A month ago I finished Eon by Greg Bear. I remember when the book came out in 1985 it was the biggest sci-fi novel of the year. It was everywhere and seemed everyone was reading it. Even years, decades, later it's still commonly found in used book stores and on shelves. But... no. The novel didn't work for me. The first half is clearly better than the second half, a common observation, the characters are weak and it's just a mess. The hype raised my expectations and I was let down.

I love the fact that as mature and respectful people we can discuss about a series being overrated, and even make fun about It, without mortify anyone for their tastes, beacuse at the end of the day, it's subjective. These are all big and influential series, and in fact, they are liked by the majority of fantasy reader, but not all of them, and it's fine. It's art, art isn't perfect, art doesn't touch the soul of everybody in the same way, but as a respectful community we can still discuss about It without hate, which is stupid. Read what you want to read, and love what you love. This is escapism at his purest form, we deserve to escape wherever we want. We will make fun of each other on later😎😂.

I have some thoughts about the WoT and its often polarizing nature. There are a great many of us who read "The Eye of the World" back in 90 and 91. It is difficult to explain what it was like when these books became available in places like Waldenbooks and Borders. The cover was eye-grabbing and *everyone* was reading it (or saying they were, anyway). We were the readers that were quite sick of LOTR, had gobbled up all of David Eddings and Dragonlance Chronicles, and randomly bought whatever we could find that had a sword or a dwarf on the cover. The golden standard was usually Shannara, heaven help us. If you ask readers now for their favorite grimdark/fantasy series - its rare for them to select a series pre-2005. But imagine a world where all these great series (by John Gwynne, Daniel Abraham, Joe Abercrombie, et al.) didn't exist. We are all a bit spoiled now... The series has flaws (all of them do) but I'm starting to think that *maybe* the generation gap also results for the skewed feelings about the books. I have to think about this more, but its been an idea that's been lingering in my mind lately whenever I come across WoT "overvalue" discussions.

You make some great points, Nawfal! One of my co-bloggers who love The Wheel of Time actually has mentioned the exact same thing regarding why The Wheel of Time hit its popularity in the 90s and why it remains a beloved classic to many readers to this day! :)

I definitely wasn't around reading fantasy for all that but EOTW in particular is extremely similiar to Tolkien so I don't see how, with just the first book, people would have seen Jordan as somehow super different from what had come before 😅 after the first book I could definitely see it though. Also there are plenty of modern readers going through WoT for the first time and loving it... It just depends on what you prioritize and vibe with in your reading!

I was part of that same cohort that read Eye of the World back when it was brand-new on the shelf. I was a little bit different, I suppose, in that I was already familiar with Robert Jordan (aka James Rigney Jr.) from his Conan work. But yes, I remember those days when Tolkien, Eddings, Brooks and Hickman/Weis were pretty much all that was out there for high fantasy epic series. Granted, I had read a lot of Robert Howard (Conan) and Michael Moorcock (Elric/Corum/Hawkmoon), but those were solidly in the pulpy Sword & Sorcery category, at least for me. The Wheel of Time was a real breath of fresh air, a new epic with this level of world-building that was right up there with JRRT himself. Sadly, I hit the infamous "slog" at around Book 8 and never finished the series. I tried again this year, inspired by all the discussion over that awful adaptation by Amazon and the same thing happened - got to Book 8 and just lost interest. Which is unfortunate, because I really enjoyed the first six or seven books. But something happens after Book 7 that just leaves me....uninterested in continuing. So I definitely understand giving The Wheel of Time, a series, an "over-rated" designation. Good stuff, but not nearly as good as it should have been.

I agree with you on not using the word “overrated.” I think it’s an intellectually dishonest term where a person tries to apply their opinions on a work to basically call other people wrong for enjoying something. I try very hard to not call something “bad” or “overrated” but just to say I didn’t enjoy it and elaborate why. I do slip from time to time though. I do think this is where RU-vid can be highly useful for seeking new media. If you find a RU-vidr whose tastes align with yours, it’s easier to trust recommendations they make. I’ve given up on traditional media reviews and focused on RU-vid reviewers whose tastes I am very familiar with.

It's always great to hear your thoughts, Petrik, even when my differ. I'm a big fan of Lawrence's Broken Empire, for example, and I think that, when combined with Red Queen's War, it's genre defying in the best ways. But I'm glad to hear you love Book of the Ancestor, which I'll be reading very soon. I've only read Tigana among Kay's books, so I don't have much to say about the rest, but Tigana deeply impressed me. I have some similar reactions to yours when it comes to The Black Company and Shades of Magic, which I did not hate but did not really love either. I gave up on Lightbringer after reading the first book. I think Mistborn is good in many respects, and it's brought a lot of readers to fantasy (including you!), so I won't bash it. There's a lot to love about The Name of the Wind, which is a beautiful book, but I also think there are some legitimate complaints about the slow plot. As for The Poppy War, it's a solid and impressive debut in many ways, but I do think it was overhyped and had some narrative klunkiness in all three books. Rin is an awesome character, though! As for The Wheel of Time, I won't wade into the debate except to say that I have a lot of respect for it but recognize it has prominent flaws. A very interesting discussion, Petrik -- thank you!

As a WoT fan, it hurts me to hear people say it’s overrated. The series has flaws granted, but it also has the highest highs I’ve ever encountered in a fantasy series. Any series this long will have its slower moments but trust me, once you finish the series, there’s no coming back from it. The journey these characters partake is the best I’ve ever read hands down and the characters are nothing like they were at the beginning when you reach the end. It’s truly an amazing journey, one that I know for certain I will take for many other times in my life.

Try not to be sad about it. These are just opinions; myself included. And what you said is exactly why I keep on thinking about the series even after I gave up on it for two years. Loved this video! Reading is super subjective so it makes sense you can love one book and absolutely dislike another and someone else can think the opposites! Poppy War was the only book I rated 1 star last year - I think knowing the history in depth might have helped but to me it just didn’t stand on its own. I also prefer harder magic systems or some sort of rules with it (mistborn, jade city, essentially not just to move the plot forward but a part of the world). I would love to see a video on reading being subjective, so many people talk about their opinions on books being facts as opposed to opinions!

Sanderson is not a good writer at humor… I really loved what Sanderson did with "Wheel of Time" because he cut to the chase, moved the plot along and didn’t add to the world-building (which was already massive). He wrapped up a series which was pre-built and needed a final piece added to the puzzle. He did a great job, but I think he seems to be better at finishing what others have started than starting something on his own. If you like books that are heavy on world-building, then this is the writer for you. The problem is in my opinion it prioritizes this element over other elements I like more, like plot, likable characters, humor, dialogue, action, etc.

I don’t really believe in “over-hype” unless masses of people are dishonest about enthusiastically loving a book, which I think is rarely the case. Sometimes I don’t click with a book that’s super popular, and that has nothing to do with the popularity being inaccurate; it just means I either had an inaccurate expectation or I wasn’t the target audience. Furthermore, having criticisms of a book or series doesn’t invalidate other people’s positive experience with it. Just saying I agree with you, Petrik! Plus, I think you have a gift for having a reading taste that aligns with what most current fantasy readers enjoy and an ability to articulate what makes a book special. When I think of over-hype I usually consider a book/movie/video game etc that has largely positive reviews (90%+) and when asked about it most fans big it up without actually giving it any depth. Something fantasy fans are guilty of (myself included) is explaining why something is good in terms of "magic, cool set pieces, cool ideas" rather than depth of narrative. That's not to say something cool isn't worth while, but a cool magic idea doesn't make a character or a story good...just as looking cool doesn't make someone interesting ;)

Actually I will correct myself in one regard. Sports fans can be just as over the top fanatical as fans of fantasy lol. I wonder if it's because the roots of fantasy were, for a good long time, a little bit fringe, a little bit uncool and unacceptable and so develop a fierce loyalty for things within the genre that define it (dragons, magic, the fantastical) and so the fans like to highlight those things that give it its unique flavour before things like narrative and character development (which are present in any story whether its grounded in the mundane or the magnificent) I found, personally, that with mediums such as fantasy books, comic books/graphic novels, fantasy movies, video games (of all sorts not just fantasy) fans will often tell me something is good based on how stylish it is rather than how deep it is (which is, to be fair, a much easier sell than trying to explain why a 900 page book is worth it in the end lol) And because I've grown up reading I think I'm just a little past hyping up something based on things like For novels: magic and cool battles Movies: CGI and cool fight scenes Video games: graphics I'm probably a little unfair on authors like Sanderson whose big USP is his creativity around how magic works (I actually really loved Way of Kings). I just find it kinda fun that fantasy fans almost universally will talk up a magic system before talking up a characters deep journey But hey lol elitist jerk over here ;)

@@Johanna_reads you're right also regarding fans of fantasy being unique amongst literature. No other literature has fans that are quite so passionate and almost hostile at times about the worlds we get lost in. And I think that's both a wonder and a detriment to loving fantasy. It can help you escape, help you see in yourself and others what you may miss otherwise. It is also why fantasy will always be my first love in literature even though some of the greatest novels I've ever read werw thrillers and historical epics. The author of fantasy has such a wonderful role to play. They can be both entertainer, teacher and also, in the best cases, provider to the reader of a place outside of reality and time that actually has physical repercussions on our real lives. Every reading experience is subjective, but hey, it doesn't change the truth that we occasionally enjoy hearing unpopular opinions. 😂 Thinking about it, Priest of Bones was another one that I put down the first time I read through it. Then I came back to it when I'm in the right reading mood and I LOVED it. Gave it 4.5 stars rating, too!

GGK's books, in particular, are a struggle for me to get through, as much as I want to!! They are so beautifully written, but they just don't capture me at all. I also agree about Mistborn, but more in comparison to Stormlight or even Warbreaker. Mistborn is a good place for readers to start with Sanderson, but it is nowhere near his best work, IMO. A couple of weeks later I made a second attempt and completely devoured it within three work days (I lacked a lot of sleep back then). While I really couldn't stand Jorg (not because he's a villain, because I literally didn't care about his character and was irritated by him), it was the Deus Ex Machina and the way the prose/style felt so immature that really turned me off. And like you, I also read Red Sister, and I love it so much, can't wait to read the rest of the trilogy. Also LOVED your comments on Darker Shade of Magic. YES. I loved her YA books This Savage Song, but her Darker Shade trilogy really did not do it for me. Mistborn definitely feels like a video game honestly, which doesn't surprise me because Brandon plays a lot of video games XD I totally respect anyone who doesn't click with it, and there are series that I love more than it, but I will say that it was the first adult fantasy book series I read and it really catapulted me into the larger fantasy world, so I have a lot of nostalgic love for it. I'm glad to know I wasn't the only person who didn't care for the series. My biggest problem is Jorg being completely and totally unlikeable for the majority of the first book and the fact that his successes feel overly-convenient. I'd also like to add that some of his dialogue early on is super awkward when he's talking about his "road brothers" and randomly kills someone in the middle of his speech for daring to speak up. There's no way this kid managed to become the leader of the group, he's 13, they would've killed him for being annoying or just not brought along a 9-year old kid, regardless of whether he's the rightful heir or not. Also, it's really not a spoiler that it takes place in the future because one character starts talking about Plutarch pretty early on

I think people just get frustrated at not connecting the same way with a book that so many other people have and go looking for negative reasons to justify it but sometimes you just don’t like the characters or enjoy particular tropes or there’s too much worldbuilding or the prose isn’t your cup of tea. If everyone liked all the same things it would get a bit boring that’s why it’s great to have so many varied genres and I’m sure there’s something out there for everyone. I admit I was disappointed when I didn’t like the fifth season and jade city when it had so much buzz and plaudits but no point being negative about it there’s no logic in trying to tell people they didn’t enjoy the thing they enjoyed better off spending that time trying another book that might be one that clicks with you.

Ok I'll be a defender of The Poppy War with you, or at least the first book which usually get criticised due to tonal shift. The second half people don't like is because it's sudden, shocking and brutal, but it does serve a purpose, in my opinion. It felt like Kuang wanted to write it as such because the real event it was inspired was so tragic and not many people know about it due to us-centric/ europe-centric history we learn in schools. She didn't finish it on a high note, it was a very messy series overall, but it did show a major potential Kuang has as a fantasy writer, in my opinion. As for my pick for overrated, I'll have to go with Nevernight (we are pretty much aligned when it comes to books we liked, but on this one, I know we disagree). The more Kristoff I read the more of his writing quirks tend to annoy me, but Nevernight really tested my patience. I think I am too old for edgelord characters speaking like they are reading a goth tumblr post and even if I disregard that, his stories are not as original: first book is basically Arya Stark arc from ASoIaF, second book is Spartacus: Blood and Sand and we will not talk about the third book. I pretend it doesn't exist. Love when Salty Petrik makes an appearance! :)

The First two Thomas Covenant trilogies are the books that, in the mid 1980s, hooked me on fantasy. (On the other hand, I consider the third, "Final" Covenant series possibly my greatest fantasy disappointment.) I regard them highly to this day. However, they have always been highly contentious. Folk seem to either love or detest them, with few remaining neutral. The miscommunication issues in the Wheel of time is KINDA the point. The men and the women are usually the ones not communicating correctly with each other due to cultural biases and personal biases against the other characters and it's an intentional microcosm of the larger cultural/magical issues that the series addresses. YES everything COULD be solved much more easily if the genders worked together in harmony couldn't it? If you're on Fires of heaven then you haven't gotten to the "slog" yet but if you get past Heart of Winter to the climax, it's all uphill from there
@PetrikLeo

I think most readers who read the series and find an issue with the miscommunication know that it IS the point of the series. But still, the fact that we have to read the miscommunication plot device being used for more than 10 books can be challenging and tiring. So sometimes throughout the series, readers (I have thought this, too) could end up thinking "This could've been solved if they just talk with each other!" easily 😂 I haven't reached the slog yet, I'm starting Lord of Chaos in June! Quite excited about it!

A very interesting video and topic, sadly some people tend to get mad about this topic. However I wouldn't interpret a statement that starts with "in fact" in the way that the one who says it means "What I say is objective truth an not an opinion". A statement doesn't become fact or opinion by saying "IMO" or "in fact", it always depends on the statement itself. And since "a mess" is not something one can prove or disprove, it's always an opinion. To preface it with "in my opinion" is just a more polite or reserved way to express it, while "in fact" conveys a more certain and assertive disposition. So I wouldn't get worked up about it too much, I'm sure or at least I hope that most people understand it that way as well.

I'm a big fan of Cook and Erickson. I read the Black company series before the Mallazan series. I will say that the Black company is very slow to reveal its secrets. In my opinion you can't judge it if you didn't finish it, Cook fills in the holes slowly over all the books. In late books you figure out what really happened in earlier books. I also think it's complicated /disjointed enough it benefits from multiple readings. I liked it the first time but after rereading it I now love it. It was a bit of a confusing slog the first time around but if you give it a chance it is so much deeper than it seems in the first half of the series. Cook told this story from certain characters perspectives, the first 4 books are from Croaker's perspective, or the book of Croaker in the companies annuals, the last 4 books are from Ravens companion Case, Lady and Murgen's perspectives, thus the book of Lady and the book of Murgen. The perspective change is also a change up of Cook's writing style. So if you didn't make it past the Croaker perspective you never even got to the main story line of the books. The Murgen story line is the glue that pulls it all together. It reminds me of Tolkien a bit because they aren't easy reads the first time around. While I love Ericksons books, I would say the Black company is better and deeper.

I don't think it's fair to say anyone can't judge the series just because they haven't finished it. In a way, I can the series SO FAR as so bad (for me) because I can't no longer bring myself to push through the series. I'm not judging the series as a whole because I haven't finished it yet. I have read the first five books, and it's no longer Croaker's. I actually enjoyed the first three books, especially the 2nd one. The 4th and the 5th is where the series deteriorate for me. I tried reading the 6th and really couldn't finish it. Maybe one day I'll give the series a try again, but not anytime soon. I’m currently reading the first mistborn book, and I like it, the magic system is really interesting and I like what it’s doing thematically, but the plot and characters are very YA feeling. I’d probably like it a lot more if I hadn’t just finished the first law and broken earth trilogies. Those were both just so much better imo. I was expecting a lot more based on the hype, especially about the world building; Sanderson is supposed to be the master of world building, but it seems kind of standard to me.

First Law is AMAZING. While it's good, Sanderson's world-building is at his best in Stormlight Archive, not in Mistborn. 🙂

there's a quite a bit of post about Poppy war in fantasy subreddit recently, and majority of the post and comments are negative and I actually agree, Rin is one of the most unlikeable MC I've read lol.

I'm not active on Reddit at all so I didn't know about that! 🤣 I definitely think Rin is intentionally created to be massively unlikeable. On that, I think she's well-written (assuming that this is the author's intention) and I never actually "love" Rin as a character, but I found her story to be so compelling.

Ya RF kuang based Rin’s character on one of the worst dictators in Chinese history iirc. She was never supposed to be likeable. You weren’t supposed to agree with her actions. As for me, I like her as a character but HATE her as a person, which is what I think the author’s intention was.

I really enjoyed the books, but Rin was just so fking annoying! It felt like the whole series, she showed literally zero growth. Constantly arrogant about what she could do even though she is still a fking child that doesn't know anything. I'm almost finished but UGH

I loved Tigana! Made me want to read more by Guy Gavriel Kay. Form my own opinion from what I read.

I just started to get into fantasy genre because I was reading exclusively psychological thrillers and I really liked Joe Abrecrombie's books and The lies of Locke Lamora but I dnf'd Mistborn hundred and so pages in and I finished first book The wheel of time but it was such a struggle and slog to get through.Almost dnf it a couple of times.I liked mythology and lore but characters were bland and dull and plot almost non existent!

Mistborn totally has a payoff but yah you have to get through the world building and the absolutely terrible people first. Next time you’re in the mood for something gritty, try Mistborn again and see how you do. I have to be almost in a cynical frame of mind to read it, but then I love it again.

No need to force yourself through them if you found them so disappointing. Or maybe come back to them someday when you feel like you want to tackle them again! I'm happy that you loved Abercrombie's books and The Lies of Locke Lamora, though! :)

Wheel of time is my favorite book series of the whole time because thematically clicks with me, on the other hand, I agree with all negative comments regarding character writing and romance, but it did not bother me because I was not reading the book for that, nor I was looking for a romance in it ... I was just sucked in by the idea of unreliable narration of the Arthurian Legends, for example, the person we know as King Arthur is actually Al'thor who took a sword out of stone ... aka Stone of tear ... Wheel of time legends and Histories were epic for me as well as the Magic System and idea of the wheel and its 7 ages, reincarnation and particularly fantastic world-building! The wheel of time fanbase is quite aware of these issues in the book, we don't deny it, we just don't care! because when we think of the wheel of time we don't think of individual badly written characters and their petty quarrels we think of that amazing detailed and well flesh-out world and absulutly fantastically written Lore! As Rand said at the end it was not about me it was about all of us! I also struggled with Mistborn, it was hard to get into it, kept giving up on it, and I literally managed to finish reading it with my third attempt but weirdly enough I absulutly loved books 2 and 3 though ...

The world-building in Wheel of Time is honestly one of my favorite things right now. Reading about The Dragon Reborn, his power, etc never gets old to me. And I think it's cool that some fans of the series, like you, know about the issues in the series but are okay with them. That being okay with the issues of the series is very subjective, some will be patient and some will not. I hope by the end of the series, I can look back and think about the series more fondly than I am right now! :)

I'm gonna take Wot off my tbr pile. I have more than 2300 books (200 of them are fantasy and scifi) on my tbr pile and I really don't wanna die without reading every single one of them. I already feel like I'm running out of time. I'm not gonna waste my time reading a fantasy series with at least 3000 pages of slog.

2300 books? Are they manga volumes included? Anyway, don't force yourself! Believe me, Wheel of Time is something you have to be patient about if you want to read through it. 😂
