These stereotypical Simpsons characters have sparked their fair share of controversy in recent years. We’ll be looking at various supporting characters from this iconic, highly influential series, who are the most overtly rooted in stereotypes and cliches, whether racial, religious, socio-economic, cultural or otherwise. They're stereotypes but they're not all racial stereotypes. It doesn't take much imagination to see why some people might not like the only Indian character to be a corner store owner voiced in a silly way by a white guy. It's not necessarily a bad character but it's worth thinking about.

The decline quality began in the late 90s when in short time the writing staff was destroyed. Conan started his late night show. Others went to Futurama.

I knew Apu was gonna be number one because of the controversy about getting rid of him on the show. That controversy was still unfair though on the account of doing great things like making Lisa learn a lesson from Lisa the Vegetarian episode.

An Indian commented that he was constantly teased and made fun by his schoolmates due to apu. Many Muslims are called 'terrorists' due to some bad people & stereotyping. Stereotypes have always a little truth in them, and that is why they resonate so easily, you recognize them. A stereotype isn't always something negative, which this list clearly insinuates.

It would help if most of the stereotypes used on the show weren't negative, while other more positive ones like Flanders and Lisa are so self-righteous or arrogant at times that their stereotypes also become unlikable.

Plus, Akira is voiced by George Takei, Fat Tony is/was voiced by Joe Mantegna (he was in the third "Godfather", plus Roger Meyers, Sr. was voiced by the late Alex Rocco, who played Moe Greene in the first "Godfather") I actually know a guy who is Indian and do a dead-on Apu impression!

I don't see the problem with characters like Apu. Sure stereotypes can be harmful but the basis of comedy is all about the satire, making fun and pointing out of traits for humour. So really the real problem is the minority who are overly "politically correct"

I think Mayor Quimby should be in the Top 10 somewhere. For one thing, he was in tons more episodes (and was thus a lot more relevant) than say, Luigi or Akiro. Honorable mention to the Sea Caption ("Garrrrr").

So, what did we learn: Almost every person in Simpsons is a stereotype. It's one of the main points of the humor of the show. But while the most people of Springfield are literal idiots, Apu is actually shown as intelligent, hard working, lovely, loving to his wife and children, friendly to any customer, a very very good and loyal friend to the Simpson family, especially to the more often becoming an asshole Homer, and lastly he is actual loyal to his Indian roots at one time meanwhile he is open minded and loyal to the free spirit of the american way of life. So, he is less a stereotype than he is very integrated in free and peaceful modern part of the american society. So therefore it is absolutely senseless to be angry or to feel hurt by the presentation of the role of Apu in Simpsons.

Every single character on "The Simpsons" is a stereotype, the real question to ask is are they better or worse stereotypes than others depicted on television? Is Apu really a worse character than Raj on "The Big Bang Theory"? Or what was briefly seen in the show "Outsourced"? Because I'd argue Raj and "Outsourced" is more of a stereotype and not nearly as flattering. Some people just want to cry because they really have nothing better to do.

I like the idea of American media people not only being offended on other peoples behalf, but ranking that offence from 1 to 10 on what they, as media people, believe is most offensive to all these countries and places haha. it’s like they’ve gone meta, broke the 4th wall and are parodying themselves. They should do a top ten list of most problematic lists next I think it’s the only place to go from here.

Interesting list! I wonder how people could both depict or recognize different character's ethnisities without stereotypes? I reckon it is good to stick with stereotypes until people will come with something better significatioin process. In addition these characters have been here for almost 30 years so it is hard to change them.

In the early days he was just an all round positive nice guy who also had a faith he believed in, then as time went on they focused less on the nice guy part and more and more on his religious side to point where it mostly became the only thing about him.
