What a grrrreat, pleasant and much needed surprise was to find your channel! There are so many film/series options that a person just gets lost. Yes, Netflix and Amazon, etc suggest titles, but their suggestions seemed biased and do not necessarily have important films, or maybe they do have them but are lost in the sea of titles. Thanks for your recommendations!

Thanks for making this list! Very diverse list of films and I look forward to checking out the ones I haven’t seen yet. For me, Riders of Justice is probably my favorite hidden gem of the year. I’ll also throw in one you didn’t mention: The Alpinist. An extraordinary documentary following the life and feats of Marc-Andre Leclerc. Thanks for everything you do for this community. Great list and video. Two new films added to my watchlist (Leonardo and Violet) Riders of Justice would definitely by high on my list of underrated/underwatched films of 2021. I'd also add The Rescue, Limbo, Shiva Baby and The Dry

Mariana, thank you so much for your recommendation of The Electrical Life of Louis Wain. I am an artist, and had not known his name; but am familiar with his work. The film utilized costume, makeup, color , music and scenery to create a truly beautiful film. I would not have seen this film if it wasn’t for your list and review. Benedict Cumberbatch was wonderful , as well as the rest of the cast. Oh, yes, painting and drawing with both hands… mind blowing!

Hello again 😄. It is fascinating to see how many hidden gems you could find in a single year. Maybe one of the repercussion of living in the Pandemic era. Now ,if you are looking for ideas, then I'd suggest humbly to make a collection of a top under rated films of all time. keep the good work up!

thanks for mentioning nine days (which is my best of the year pick) a film that nobody is talking about but everyone should see. i was in the theater by myself when i saw it and was immersed in this film! the ending gets me choked up just thinking about it

Last Night in Soho was one of my favorite movies of the year; the cast, the film editing, the costume designs, the cinematography--all created a world that completely mesmerized me, and what a role for Diana Rigg to end on. I would also recommend The Sparks Brothers as far as documentary, and another underrated Edgar Wright offering. Pure delight from beginning to end, even if you don't know the band Sparks (you certainly will after watching this lengthy homage to them).

Hi Marianna! Great list! I will make sure to check out some of these films. I have especially wanted to see Mass for a long time, but it is not available on any streaming service 😣. In terms of most underrated film of the year, my pick is C’mon C’mon. If it were up to me, Woody Norman would be a lock to win best supporting actor.

Great list. I added electric life and violet to the watch list. Yes! Last Night in Soho and the Night house are both really good. I would also say Annette, Little fish and Coda are underrated. Even Last Duel and The Green Knight are too

Only seen a handful, and there's a few I hadn't heard of! I now remember hearing about Violet ages ago before its release, but completely forgot about it and it fell off the radar. I'll have to watch that, Oxygen, and Encounter soon!

I just watched this video and I have to agree COMPLETELY about Last Night In Soho. It was a great film, and the third act is exhilarating. The only real isue I had with it waa some of the CGI, but it was still eerie and surprising. That being said, I have a lot to watch. Thank you!

omg dude i have ALMOST watched The Electric Life of Louis Wain so many times and this has made it definitely shoot to the top of my list. Like cats were definitely the main selling feature but until now I havent heard anyone talk about it. Cant wait to check out the rest of the films too, esp Mads ;)

two films from this year that left an impact on me after multiple watches are Little Fish (streaming on Hulu) starring Jack O'Connell and Olivia Cooke and The Paper Tigers (streaming on Netflix).

If you haven't seen a foreign movie called the innocents that came out this year. If more people saw it it may not be considered underrated but I'd say it's criminally underrated it's a Norwegian horror/thriller about some children who discover they have telekinetic abilities. It's disturbing and so so so so so damn good. It's one of my favorites of the year, if not my favorite of the year overall.

Amazing suggestions. Although my guilty pleasure of the year was not a movie but an Animated Series: Arcane. Absolutely beautiful and entretaining! Maid (TV Show) was also amazing and underrated. Keep up the quality videos Marianna!

The last portion of ENCOUNTER reminds me of another movie by Ridley Scott that involves a weekend fun of two women goes awry. But of course the ending is way different

Hope you're doing great as well! I've seen "Old", and while I didn't like it all that much, I'm always interested in M. Night Shyamalan's films - I think he has really interesting ideas, and even when it comes to movies I don't love there's still something unique to them and something to appreciate.

I almost didn't watch the Last Duel but then I saw a review by Stuckmann and we watched it last weekend. I really enjoyed it, and very glad Ridley was brave enough to tackle that story, which needed telling. I think Matt Damon wasn't the best choice, or Ben Affleck, but imagine if they wrote the script they had a lot of power. The rest of the cast were incredible and the story so so well done

For me the most underrated film of the year is "Passing". It is so rich with nuance and craft, it's almost impossible to believe that it's Rebecca Hall's debut. And the performances from Ruth Negga and Tessa Thompson are definitely the most powerful I've seen all year. I also agree wih you on "The Night House", but I think it should come wih a trigger warning for suicide ideation and depression. I went into it not knowing anything about that and some scenes were 100% unbearable to watch.

The issue with Last Night in Soho is the ending, which was kinda messy. Not what happened with the girl of the '60s, but what the woman in charge of the home does. Could have happened differently that was more in tune with her not being seen on the opposite side of victim/villain.

Respect and like Benedict Cumberbatch. His attempt at an American accent took me out of Power of the Dog at times as it did in Black Mass. Nitpicking I know, POTD was great and he was electric even if he can't quite pull off some accents. His Dr. Strange accent is fine.

If you haven't seen it, I highly HIGHLY recommend Todd Stephen's Swan Song (the Udo Kier film, not to be confused with the Mahershala Ali film which admittedly I haven't seen). It's a hilarious and heartbreaking portrait of a gay man of a certain generation as he goes on this bizarre odyssey through his hometown. Udo Kier gives a stunning and hilarious performance, and Jennifer Coolidge is excellent too in a very "un-Jennifer Coolidge" role

As a movie lover and former paid byline movie critic myself, I must say that the themes of all of your 10 UNDERATED and BEST MOVIES of 2021 I would void like the plague as they created CGI, period pieces and SCI FY worlds that never could or ever will exist, threfore I learn nothing by viewing them.

Folks I would encourage you to go out and support Nightmare Alley if/when you feel it’s safe to do so. It is currently being ignored in the theatres but is well worth your time and money. There were just 9 people including myself in the screening I attended.

I encourage everyone to seek out the original (1947)- easy to find and you get to see a real movie star at work. Makes me think evolution took a wrong turn in the last half of the century.

"The Last Duel" & "Last Night In Soho" were my highest rated films I saw at cinemas this year. Both highly underappreciated, such a shame, both films were box office flops. I don't understand viewers anymore 😔

The Last Duel had horrible marketing, which makes a huge difference. I’m a big Ridley Scott fan, but the trailer was completely off putting. I’m glad I gave it a chance, it was great!
