Oppie for the different layers you realise each time you watch it. And one of the best or the best score sequences of all time "Can you hear the music". I was just transported. Best feelings I've ever had. The choice of frame rates just keeps building along with the score too.

Thanks for the great year; listening to the show is always a highlight of my week. This is my second year doing a best of list and like you all, it'll be interesting to accumulate these lists over time and look back on them. I think to me 2023 is a bit of a stronger year than 2022, but that could be recency bias. Also I made a point to see more this year as films were released, so I have a broader sample size compared to last year at this same time. My top 10 1. Oppenheimer 2. Poor Things 3. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse 4. "Asteroid City" 5. The Zone of Interest 6. Past Lives 7. Anatomy of a Fall 8. Killers of the Flower Moon 9. Priscilla 10. The Holdovers

I’ve watched Oppenheimer 4 times & every time I notice so many different things about it that I didn’t before. That’s the genius of the film! Every time I’m blown away by Cillian’s layered performance. The emotions in his face… He gives the performance of a lifetime. It’s cinematic perfection to me. So I’m thrilled it’s number 1 for you guys. And I agree with Jake about Maestro. He explained exactly how I felt about it. And I’ve liked Bradley since Alias. But I wasn’t transformed by his performance. I saw straight through it unfortunately. I would have liked more of a change from him instead of treading familiar territory. A Star Is Born & Maestro (musicians who are legends in complicated relationships) Past Lives was a phenomenal film for a debut filmmaker.

1. The Killer 2. Killers of the Flower Moon 3. Air 4. Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning 5. Oppenheimer - Glad one of you guys mentioned that The Killer was highly underrated, as it was very much so. It should have been nominated for Best Picture, Director, Actor, Editing, Sound, Original Score, and Cinematography. Why people are talking more about Oppenheimer than the brilliant collaboration between Fincher and Fassbender is beyond me. I believe this is Fincher's best film, and one of Fassbender's best performances, if not the best of his career. The same thing happened to De Niro in Heat, another great, subtle performance that went overlooked, people don't realize the brilliance of what they're doing.

Cracking lists lad. Never heard of No One Will Save You until the podcast and thought it was a nail-biting romp for 90 minutes, so thank you for flagging this up. Kevin's passion for Oppenheimer is so satisfying to hear. There are still a few final titles, some of your choices like Poor Things and The Holdovers don't come out until next year, therefore I am classing them as 2024 releases in the UK. My current top 5 at the moment: 1. Oppenheimer 2. Beau Is Afraid 3. Anatomy of a Fall 4. Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One 5. Pearl (Came out March this year, Unbelievable it took so long for a UK Release). Some may shift on a rewatch. Spiderverse is likely going to make the back-half, as Sean said it is such a strong year for genre filmmaking. Anyways guys keep up the cracking work, one of the few podcasts I keep listening to each week. Looking forward to more arguments over the tier lists and loving the incorporation of the Premium games into the main show. Cannot wait for many more if it happens. Have a great holidays all and so excited for the show's return next year/

A lot of the big Oscar buzz movies come out later in the Netherlands, we only got The Whale, The Fabelmans, Tar, Women Talking and Banshees of Inishiren in February or so of this year. Poor Thing is only coming out March/April so there's a bunch I haven't seen yet this year. From what I've watched, and only talking 2023 releases (because otherwise Women Talking and The Whale would be #1 and #2 already) my favorites were: 1. Past Lives: The movie is literally perfect and I think Teo Yoo gave the most incredible performance this year. I'm a bit of a 3rd culture kid myself so I relate a lot to the idea of your childhood friends moving away and how easy it is to fall away for years at a time and instantly connect when you do see each other again. I adored it. 2. Barbie: I walked in expecting it to only be ok but honestly it's the most fun I've had in a movie all year. I feel like for all the fanfair around the movie, Margot Robbie doesn't get enough appreciation for how incredible she is here. Her acting in the 3rd act is honestly top tier. 3. Godzilla Minus One: WOW. WOOOOOOW. Best monster/kaiju movie since Pacific Rim, occasionally janky CGI aside Godzilla was finally terrifying and we had human characters that I wanted, no NEEDED to succeed. It's an incredible achievement. 4. Oppenheimer: After Past Lives it's probably the closest to cinematic perfection to release this year and honestly perhaps ever. Every aspect of it was pure artistry and craftsmanship, it's such an achievement. I watched it 4 times and caught new details each time. However it's not per se a movie I'd rewatch for "fun" per se, more just to marvel at it. 5. The Creator: This movie is also an achievement, despite the plot being a bit basic I was completely engrossed in the world building and the LOOK of the movie. It's phenomenal what Gareth Edwards achieved with this. I watched it for a 2nd time in ScreenX on Kevin's recommendation and it was a phenomenal experience. 6. John Wick 4: Easily the best action movie of the year, and honestly of recent years. It had everything I want from the genre and on top of that it's just a gorgeous movie to watch. I love the story of Chad's journey through the industry and I think this movie was a fittingly epic send off for one of the best original characters of the last decade. 7. Killers of the Flower Moon: This movie was longer than Oppenheimer but felt shorter. It took me through basically every emotion and by the end of it I was exhausted but in a good way. Lily Gladstone better be a massive name after this because that was a powerhouse performance. And I've never wanted to punch an 80 year old man as much as I did in this movie, good grief. 8. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse: I really liked this movie but it didn't really stick with me as much as I thought it would. But it did have some spit-out-my-drink hilarious lines, animation is incredible and I really wanna see where it goes. Spot was also an inspired choice for the antagonist and they nailed it. 9. Anatomy of a Fall: This movie grabbed me by the neck within the first 10 minutes and tightened and tightened and tightened its grip until the very end. Holy shit. Easily the best child actor performance of the year, but Sandra Huller was also immense in it. Incredible stuff. 10. Joy Ride: It is the most hysterical movie of the year and I couldn't not give it love. Entire cast had amazing chemistry and there was a solid 20 minutes where I could not stop myself from weeping from laughter. If I had to do HMs they'd be (in no particular order): Suzume, Mission Impossible 7, Creed 3, Wonka and The First Slam Dunk. Gonna try and squeeze in The Holdovers, Aquaman 3, The Killer and Maestro in before the end of the year, but overall it's been an awesome year for movies

About Dial of Destiny's de-aging: I think it looks absolutely great when it's actually Harrison Ford, but it is much more obvious when it's a double, and they replace his face. There's an entire scene where Indy is passing as a nazi in the train that looks flawless.

Also, The Hold overs or John Wick over Poor Things is just like putting a Walmart Xmas movie above any real cinematic experience. It's all about feel good movies and American idols?
