All my life, Oppenheimer is the only movie I appreciated more on my second viewing than the first. That speaks volume about how masterful it was crafted.

My cinema was absolutely packed with groups of friends wearing pink dresses and pink suits and even groups of college kids wearing black and grey suits. It was awesome to see that on opening weekend. Not to mention my IMAX showing was completely full for Oppenheimer. I don't know if we'll see a moment like this for a loooong time.

Aren't Dune 2, Scorsese's Killer of the Flower Moon and Riddley Scott's Napoleon all getting IMAX exclusive screenings? All these films might not have been shot 100% on IMAX cameras, but the trailers were MORE THAN ENOUGH to convince me to watch them in IMAX. Won't be surprised one bit if those films sell out IMAX screenings, especially Dune 2.
@LoganScottY
@LoganScottY 10 месяцев назад
@@nikitamohan3390 Yeah Dune 2 will do really well no doubt, not sure about Killer of the flower moon cos very depressingly Martin Scorsese's name doesn't attract the current generation of average moviegoers, but when I say we might not see a moment like this again I'm referring to the phenomenon of Barbenheimer. People dressed in suits and pink outfits, going to see the two movies back to back, all that kind of stuff.
@nikitamohan3390
@nikitamohan3390 10 месяцев назад
@@LoganScottY Oppenheimer's staggering success is promising news that there is an audience that is willing to watch well crafted, well directed dramas. Their opening weekend may not be as big as Oppenheimer, but 4000 people did get to see Scorsese's film early in May and according to some critics, it's even more entertaining and superior to Nolan's Oppenheimer. Scorsese's name may not be as bankable as Nolan's but he does have 2 of the biggest A-list stars headlining his film and helping to get butts in seats with Leo and DeNiro. The only thing working against the movie is the 3.5 hour runtime, but with strong positive word of mouth maybe it will be able to draw a crowd?
@nikitamohan3390
@nikitamohan3390 10 месяцев назад
@@LoganScottY Yes we may not see the Barbenheimer effect again. That's true.
@nikitamohan3390
@nikitamohan3390 10 месяцев назад
@@LoganScottY I just realized if the Marvels and Dune 2 both keep their scheduled dates and don't move to 2024, The Marvels will release 1 week after Dune 2. So if most screenings of Dune 2 especially in IMAX sell out, some people might end up doing a double feature the week the MArvels releases on November 10 and Dune 2's 2nd weekend. But I don't think it's going to create any noise on social media like Barbenheimer cuz Barbie and Oppenheimer both got HIGH critic and audience ratings whereas at this point NO ONE knows if the MArvels is going to be watchable after Secret Invasion's horrid finale so Dune 2 could end up bulldozing the MArvels.

Maybe this is helpful to others, cause in my quest to determine the best way to watch Oppenheimer I found out a few things out that I didn't know beforehand. The two main things to account for are aspect ratio and projection type. The film was shot in 1.43 IMAX 70mm and 'normal' 2.20 65mm, which is a bit less wide than the regular 2.39 or 2.35 widescreen standard. This means the ratio switches during the film. The best way to watch it is then of course on an IMAX screen that supports 1.43 aspect ratio, so you can see the whole picture. However, most IMAX screens are not capable of displaying 1.43 aspect ratio. Only about 55-65 of the total 1700 IMAX screens worldwide can display 1.43 (sources differ). Most IMAX screens only have the capability of displaying 1.90, meaning you don't see the whole picture and parts of the top and bottom are cropped. If you watch the film on a non-IMAX screen, the ratio can be 2.20 or 2.39 depending on the theater/screen, meaning even more is cropped in the 1.43 scenes. Of course Nolan took account of this while filming so there are no cropped heads or anything, but you won't get the full picture. Check this for a visual guide: i.redd.it/rp7d2l80ty2b1.png The other important thing is projection type. Unfortunately, many theaters have switched to digital and analog film projection is becoming more and more scarce. Most theaters that still do this are located in North America, and some in Europe, and hardly any in other parts of the world, let alone actual 70mm film projection which is even more rare. The best way to watch it would be in 70mm IMAX which is estimated to have a resolution of 12-18K (you can't know for sure), but there are only 30 theaters worldwide that can do this, and they are only in North America and Europe. Other projection on film is regular 70mm with about 10-12K resolution, which is nice but you only get 2.20 aspect ratio. Also 35mm is possbile with about 4-6K resolution, but then you get even less picture with an aspect ratio of 2.39. On the digital side, there is regular DCP digital projection, which can be 2K or 4K. And there are 3 types of IMAX digital projection: Xenon, Laser and Dual Laser (also called GT Laser). Xenon and Laser are both 4K and dual Laser uses two 4K projectors. The best digital projection is GT Laser which has amazing contrast and looks like an OLED screen in my opinion; only 24 theaters in the world can do this. Now the question what is the actual best? It's either 70mm IMAX or GT Dual Laser 1.43. The latter is digital and has amazing contrast, inky blacks and a beautiful OLED type projection. And it's the same quality every showing, because it's digital. IMAX analog 70mm has a higher resolution probably, but it can have the small imperfections that come with analog showings, like jitters, or muddy colors. The more a reel is displayed, the higher the chance of something going wrong, or colors being impacted due to air, dust, liquids or you name it. It depends on the care the projectionist takes or just simple (bad) luck. Of course the choice also depends on what's near you. These two are just the absolute best versions of the film you can watch, and they depend on if you want to experience the beauty and nostalgia that is analog film projection, or if you want the always clean and perfect digital GT Laser presentation. I would probably go for the IMAX 70mm, but unfortunately there is no theater nearby me that supports it. Luckily, there is a 1.43 GT Dual Laser theater within acceptable distance, so that's very good choice as well. The next best after these two versions are probably; 70mm 2.20 or IMAX Xenon/Laser 1.90 and finally DCP 2.20 or 35mm (both depend on if you want more picture, or analog film projection). For an overview of theaters, check out this map: www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/viewer?mid=1gyl-t_K2zyDmudwswu3KK_gnMq26Byc&ll=-3.81666561775622e-14%2C36.89496276117387&z=1

Oppenheimer easily makes it into my top 5 of the year, closely followed by John Wick 4 and then not too far off is GotG3. Sadly it's quite difficult for me to get to the cinema, so those are the only one's I've see there that would make a top 5 list (the only other film I saw in the cinema was Ant-Man). In number 4 is Extraction 2. After that there's only a few films left, and I can't really pick one to be top 5. I fully expect when I finally see Spiderman when it comes to home release, and Dune Part 2 in the cinema I'll have a really strong top 5 by the end of the year.

I agree with the bad release date but Paramount was overconfident about Mission doing great in its week and it having legs, but it had 2 factors leading to it: (1) they did not foresee that Sound of Freedom was going to blow up, and it's likely they share the same demographics with SOF being more of a "must-see" for that audience, and (2) they did not foresee how massive Barbenheimer would become. I hope they schedule Part 2 better. I'm hoping the trend in future MI films don't go downwards. Oppenheimer became my first movie I watched in IMAX since Speed Racer in 2008. I was a kid in elementary school, and now I'm working. There are no nearby IMAX cinemas near me but I knew I had to watch this in IMAX, so I made the journey to the nearest one which was still far awat, and I spent my tickets with some of my saved earnings from my job. No regrets, the IMAX experience of Oppenheimer is immaculate.

I think it’s a bit dismissive of Greta’s/Margot’s/etc work to phrase Barbie’s success as just a marketing win. They are the ones who gave the studios material to market, like the cast, the practical sets, the outfits, the songs, and most importantly the movie itself as a whole.
@ReelBlend
@ReelBlend 11 месяцев назад
As Sean mentions, not just a marketing win. But he was also specifically discussing in that segment the marketing win of Barbie AND Oppenheimer together, creating Barbenheimer, which is something we may never see again with two films seemingly generating interest in each other during the same opening weekend.

@@ReelBlendI mean barbie is about to reach a billion dollars and it only took like 3 weeks. Oppenheimer isn’t doing the numbers Barbie is. Barbie has broken the record for Biggest opening of 2023 Biggest Monday-Thur in Warner bros history Biggest second weekend of 2023 Highest grossing film by a female director The Barbie soundtrack broke Spotify history as the only film soundtrack on the apps history to have 3 songs charting on the worldwide list. Barbie isn’t just doing box office numbers it’s a complete phenomenon. The pre-orders for the Blu-ray’s and dvd are doing insane rn too Y’all are REALLY trying to connect Oppenheimer to Barbie’s success when in reality Oppenheimer was the reason Barbie almost didn’t open in Japan while Oppenheimer connected to a pop culture icon Barbie has done nothing but help Oppenheimer but in the end Oppenheimer will not be able to top Barbie

The MCU/modern superhero movies has conditioned audiences to expect action scenes like every 15 mins and a 3rd act CGI fest. So when a real movie like Oppenheimer comes out dealing with real important issues you complain that there's too much talking ffs. Well sorry that there's no 3rd act CGI fest for you in this one, The Marvels is coming out soon that's probably more in your alley

I never said Oppenheimer was a bad film. It currently stands #4 on my list of best 2023 movies and it was really a push between that and my #3. No Super Hero movies in my top 5 for the brainless ones that assume that is what I like but that is today's social media for you so I am not surprised there. I actually prefer movies like Oppenheimer with a real story to them. I just found it to be to long especially the ending with the hearing. I got it the government was trying to railroad Oppenheimer with a sham hearing. Maybe I should have not watched the Oppenheimer documentary on NBC before seeing the movie since the most important parts were covered in that in half the time of the movie? I just don't have the love for the movie that the hosts of the show have for it. Sue me.

I tend to agree, I found it a mixed bag. I give it 6/10, didn't find it particularly gripping or interesting. I usually love dialogue driven movies like JFK or Social Network but this wasn't even close to being in the same league as those. Maybe I need to give it a second viewing, but my first instincts on a film are usually right...
