Honorable mention: Elemental This Disney/Pixar film released on June 16th of this year. A week after the release of Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse. Talk about bad timing.
Possibly. I think the reason why Blue Beetle bombed is the same reasons why Fury of the Gods and The Flash bombed. People are burned on the DCEU and don’t care about the movies know that we know it’s ending this year. Barbenheimer might have played a factor into it, but it’s not one of the leading ones in my mind.
Blue Beetle was just poor in most areas; it didn't have a villain you felt was actually "evil", the family over-acted, mario-lopez was horrendous and the entire thing felt like a pg version of iron man with so many latina references sprinkled in for demographic fluffing. Simple lacked authenticity. innovation and love.
Hocus Pocus (1993) - a Halloween movie released in July. it flopped in theatres due to that release date. Would have done a lot better had it been released in October.
What about Treasure Planet? It came out around the same time as Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Gangs of New York, and Disney's own Santa Clause 2. That's one of the reasons why the underrated masterpiece bombed hard.
The Rescuers Down Under should have made a honorable mention, since it came out around the original Home Alone movie, and I don't think most old school fans need to be told how much of a juggernaut Home Alone was in the box office.
@@Reaperguy67That movie is almost as good as the graphic novel from the mid 80's... The novel is a must read, and the movie explained a bit more of the world in and of itself
That movie introduced me to Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Negan, Walking Dead), Malin Akerman, and reintroduced me to Jackie Earl Haley (Bad News Bears, Breaking Away) who I hadn't seen in 30 years. Great cast.
I'm still glad that Watchmen came out at the time it did I was in my late teens, but still had the mind of a pre-teen Watchmen changed my life and the way I used to see the world
My wife and I loved Onward and we were very disappointed that we didn't get a chance to see it in the theater before theaters had to close. We both hope they continue stories in the same world.
For me it’s The Nice Guys. That movie was funny, it had a great mystery, and the characters were great. It’s just that movie came out in 2016 during a time when Zootopia and Captain America Civil War were dominating the box office. Had it come out maybe in the summer, it would have benefited more. If you haven’t seen the movie, you should, Ryan Gosling Ryan and Russell Crowe make an amazing duo.
I can think of a couple of animated Disney films, Fantasia (1940) and Alice in Wonderland (1951). Both were ahead of their time, and the surrealism found in both would have found a more receptive audience if they were made in the 60's when psychedelia first became a thing.
The Thing is a fcking masterpiece. It knew the first time I saw it in the late 80’s. It still holds up to this day yo! I’ve never understood why it didn’t succeed.
A modern release date wouldn't have benefited The Thing, because alot of modern horror movies rely to heavily on cg and lazy jump scares, like The Thing (2011) they scrapped all of the practical effects in favor of cg and it was horrible
Black Widow could have probably made more if it came out after Captain America Civil War rather than after Avengers Endgame plus it wouldn't have to deal with being delayed numerous times by COVID-19 to the point where fans were too tired of waiting for Black Widow's solo movie. Even though this movie made a lot, Transformers Revenge of the Fallen came out during the strikes so the writers had to come up with the script in like 3 weeks, although the questionable humor didn't help the film either.
If a Justice League movie would’ve come out in the 2000s, we would’ve gotten George Miller’s Justice League Mortal off the ground (sadly that film was canned due to the 2008 Writers Strike)
Here is my issue with justice league. It was obviously rushed to by WB. And the characters just felt way off. Trying to make MCU money while skipping steps along the way.
I think The Amazing Spider-man came out at the wrong time too. Fans of the Rami films were still upset about 4's cancellation that they practically saw the Reboot as a "Cheap replacement." Had it been released a couple years later, when the cancellation was accepted, Garfield's Spider man would have widely gained more fans, even of Rami's Movies.
With Justice League, you had the fact that it was a Frankenstein's Monster of a movie that made it a mess of a movie. Had the Zack Snyder version been the only version that existed it would've faired better not the mess Joss Whedon gave us.
that would have been perfect seeing as the character was still fresh for everyone. but it came out during the tail end of Phase Three and during COVID that it really had no chance of doing well. also didnt help matters that Johansson went off on her tiraid of how Disney wasnt paying her the money she thought she was owned either
@@mattalan6618 If the pandemic didn't happen, it would've come out in April 2020, which still would've been a year AFTER she was killed off in Endgame.
So much in depth about the graphic novel, it is a movie that was supposed to be "unfilmable", but it captures the nuance of the novel in the best way and expands upon it. I wish I had never seen it, so I could experience it anew again...
It’s funny that John Carpenter’s The Thing (1982). I’ve watch that movie more now then E.T The Extra terrestrial. More now then ever. Plus I the films feel more realism on who do trust?, and it is as well with the pandemic
One animated movie of this year would have benefit a huge popularity around summer time if it didn't get released around a certain Live-action Disney remake movie. If you can guess what I'm talking about then you are correct. I am talking about Ruby Gilman Teenage Kraken movie from Dreamworks. I has a lot of potentials, a lovable quirky character trying to fit in, an original premise, and yes an evil mermaid queen that resembles Ariel from the original Little Mermaid. With that topic in mind Ruby would have been one of the summer hits if it wasn't going up against the live action Little Mermaid movie and of course fans are calling Ruby a roast from Dreamworks against Disney for portraying the villainess as an Ariel look-a-like but it was still a fun movie to watch and one of my favorites from Dreamworks.
I think you meant to call Justice League, “Josstice League”, and the reason it did so poorly is because the higher ups at WB interfered with the film so much that it ended up being COMPLETELY different from what Zack Snyder was trying to do with the film. Soooo, no, Josstice League wasn’t released at the wrong time, it was released in a shitty state when it shouldn’t have been released in that state to begin with
Solo A Star Wars Story would've been huge if it had been released during the holiday season instead of so soon after the negative reception to The Last Jedi, and being sandwiched in between Avengers and Deadpool
Justice League wasn't just ill-timed. It was also butchered by the studio. If you've seen Jack Snyder's release of the movie, it's clear how badly the first cut was treated.
I don't know if it belongs on this list, but what a great, unexpected story that is... just tell people that Metallica based the song and video of "One" on it and people will flock to it...
I'm just suprised speed racer wasn't on here. Since Scott Pilgrim vs the World had similar comic style as speed racer, it was box office smash. If only speed race had waited two more years it might have become a box office smash.
I didn’t want the bright humor of the MCU for Justice League, just wanted good action, FX, story and better pacing. The Snyder Cut was everything JL should’ve been in the first place.
@@mikememine1423 while i thought the movie was ok i was still impressed at how it wasnt afraid to tackle issues like rape and mental stability all while telling a story most comics are afraid to tell
Solo A Star Wars Story should have had a November, December release (for the holiday) instead of the traditional SW May release. Or even maybe should have been made before SW the Force Awakens.
Release date had nothing to do with Solo bombing. I like that they released it in May. That's where Star Wars belongs, not December. It all boils down to how piss poor and insulting The last Jedi was 6 months earlier.
There's no one correct way to do a cinematic universe, and I'm okay with what the DCEU did. We already got introduced to the big three in the previous movies, and the other six would be spent off with their own movies after Justice League.
The “Dark Water” remake with Jennifer Connelly. It was unfavorably compared to other Japanese horror remakes at the time, like “The Ring.” But I truly believe you could release it today with the A24 logo slapped onto it, and it would be critically revered. It’s a compelling drama, lead by a great performance, that happens to by housed with a supernatural element in the background.
Go back and watch the season 2 trailer - we see Loki timeslip to a jet ski dealership. Now this could just be the famous marvel misdirect, or that Loki pruning himself is where the cycle of the TVA destruction repeats as at that point Loki was supposed to have stopped himself from time slipping. Also you missed Morbius stating that resetting Miss Minutes would also reset the ability to use magic inside the TVA.
William Friedkin's "Sorcerer" is one of the best movies nobody has ever seen. It was dealt the fatal one-two punch of not having a poorly-chosen title for a movie having nothing to do with sorcerers or sorcery, and being released on the same date in 1977 as the original Star Wars movie. OOF.
The Fablemans was released 3 weeks prior to Avatar: The Way of Water. It would have fared better financially if it was released at least another month earlier, or even better, if its first movie trailer was released at least 6 months prior to its release instead of 2.
Frankly I'm stunned watchmen did as well as it did. If it was trying to subvert the super hero genre, it did a really bad job. Then there's the plotholes and horrendous inconsistencies, and that ending wasn't a twist, it was just stoopid.
How about "Solo: A Star Wars Movie"? Coming out only months after "The Last Jedi" meant there was no clamor for a "Star Wars" movie. Had they held it back for December like other "Star Wars" movies were at the time, I think it would have found a more friendly reception at the box office.
Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves was released at the worst time. It got clobbered by Mario Bros and John Wick. It also suffered from a toxic area of the fandom who were trying to harpoon it months before it's release. Most of them admitted they were wrong after they actually saw it, but the damage was done.
Besides The Thing, there was another movie from the Summer of ''82 that tanked because it came out at the wrong time--Blade Runner. If it hadn't been released in the same period as ET and Star Trek II, The Wrath of Khan, it would likely have been a success, if not a hit. I always thought it would have done better as holiday season, rather than a summer release, too. .
I just finished watching The Thing before viewing this video. If that film was released on a different date, it would have undeniably been John Carpenter's successful film in every regard.
Onward, Blue Beetle, The Creator, Rise of the Guardians, Treasure Planet (remember the underrated Disney movie from 2002), Pete's Dragon 2016, The BFG (both Disney films from the 2010s deserves love while they've losing to R rated and infamously overrated Sausage Party) and Peter Pan 2003
Fear and loathing in Las Vegas is another film that is way ahead of its time. It sucks that it got sandwiched between Godzilla (1998), criminally underappreciated Deep Impact, and Titanic’s domination doomed Terry Gilliam’s chances of a box office hit. It would’ve gotten a Fall release, but releasing Fear and Loathing on a Pre-Memorial Day Holiday Weekend was a bad idea.
I believe that Ruby Gilman would have performed better if it had premiered later in the year rather than the month of June, when Spiderverse and Elemental were in theaters at the time.
Yes! The Thing. Absolutely. If it was released more recently, it could have had decent special effects, unlike the trash effects it was saddled with, that fans simply could not take seriously back in the 80's. Finally something I can agree with WM on about The Thing.
Idk, I would argue if the movies where done any sooner or later it would be a different movie, or at least some scenes, scripts and actors would be changed
This past summer, I went to go see The last voyage of the Demeter, and I really enjoyed it, but sadly Barbenheimer killed any chance of it, making a profit at the box office. It’s a prime example of a movie that would’ve done really well around this time of year instead of going for summer release just like my favorite Peter Jackson film the Frightners from 1996. Both movies have a very Halloween aesthetic to them but for some stupid reason Universal has a bad habit of releasing these movies during the summer.
Justice League movie could've waited until the MCU died off.Who knows each character could've been told right with their series before teaming up with each other.
Really tired of everyone blaming the MCU for the failure of the Justice League movie. Just admit that it was a badly written movie that didn't respect the identities of the characters. You want edgy DC superheroes? Should have made JLDark, Superman was Emo, Batman was cracking jokes, the Flash couldn't run and Snyder's 2nd attempt was just as bad
George Miller actually tried to do a Justice League film right when you suggested. Armie Hammer as Batman, Common as the John Stewart Green Lantern and I think Matt Bommer as Superman. It got cancelled. Justice League was always a doomed film.
Completely disagree with the take on Onward. The flop had nothing to do with the theme or tone of the movie. It flopped 100% because of COVID and because they moved it to Disney+ without it having a proper theatrical run. If it had come out even in January of 2020 it would have killed in the box office. It was only in theaters for two weeks. Right before things shut down.
