Tip #11 Don't keep crabs in water after keeping them, unless you have an aerator. They die faster in a bucket of water than in a bucket with no water.

Thanks a great tip Dan! I've seen some people put them directly on ice too. I may need to update my top 10!

@@WillyFish Putting them directly on ice is even better. Just make sure the crab don't sit in the water from the melted ice. I put them on ice in a cooler, alive, with the drain open.

Awesome video! Thanks for posting! I want to take my kids crabbing at some point. I'm not very experienced with crabbing yet. Subbed.

Thanks for the sub. Crabbing is easy and fun. Great outdoor activity for kids. There's a bunch of places in Oregon where you can fish from a dock and rent gear.

Good info the only thing I would suggest is using lead line instead of the yellow line. That yellow line gets stuck in people prop .

Terrific video! Do you have a recommendation for a spot to go crabbing from the shore and clamming? I'd like to take a vacation in Oregon specifically so we can go crabbing and clamming with the kids
@WillyFish
@WillyFish 2 года назад
Hey Mrs. Valdez, there's a couple of great spots on the North Oregon Coast at Barview Jetty and Kelly's Brighton Marina where you can crab from the docks or rent a boat. Plus, in the summer the tides will be low for clamming in those areas and just down the road at Garabaldi! There's plenty of areas to camp around Nehalem & Wheeler. If you are looking for more central/southern Oregon, Newport Bay would have the most dock/shore crabbing for sure! I hope the info helps!

Would you recommend heating or Microwaving the chicken bait ? Or just puuting it the pot frozen and let the ocean thaw it ?
@WillyFish
@WillyFish 2 года назад
Hey Alexander, I always put my chicken frozen into the crab pots and let it thaw in the water. No need to microwave the chicken!

What’s a good boat length for crabbing in Oregon commercial
@WillyFish
@WillyFish 2 года назад
You can get away with a 12 foot boat, but I like 16 feet if you have 2-3 people onboard (1 to drive the boat and 1 person to pull crab pots). You can go bigger than 16, but to have a good amount of space for the crab gear and people on-board, go with 16.

Do you think Portland would be a good place to catch Dungeness?
@WillyFish
@WillyFish 2 года назад
The closest crabbing to Portland, Oregon is Tillamook and Astoria.

Hermens Outdoors, how do you cook crabs? Whole or cleaned? Fresh water or salt?
@WillyFish
@WillyFish 3 года назад
Great question Eric. I boil them whole in salt water (add some salt & seasoning). That's the way I learned from my grandfather and the way I find it easiest to do. Everyone does have their own preference. But I will be doing a video in the near future on the different ways to cook crabs and the pros/cons of each way. Look for that coming soon
@EricRush
@EricRush 3 года назад
@@WillyFish I've always brought them home in a large cooler full of seawater (I've never had one die en route) and boiled them whole in the seawater for twenty minutes. They taste so good, we don't even bother with melted butter. Last batch, I cleaned them first and boiled them in freshwater. Huge mistake. Never again. Almost tasteless.
@WillyFish
@WillyFish 3 года назад
@@EricRush Yeah, you have to use salt water to boil them. I always add some extra salt and seasoning too as I feel it adds some flavor. I'm a dip in butter or make crab cakes kind of person. Plus, my wife loves crab cakes!

Why in the world are you using floating rope?
@WillyFish
@WillyFish 4 года назад
that's my crazy uncle. The water we were fishing was low (like 20 feet) and the rope was for about 70 feet of water.

@@WillyFish As soon as I commented it went to another clip and I said to my self yup that’s netarts. I was there this weekend going off the rocks by the restroom, only got red rock unfortunately.
@WillyFish
@WillyFish 3 года назад
@@josephmars20 If you crab off the rocks in Netarts, try along the road south of the bathrooms. One the incoming tide that can be a better spot for bank crabbing! It's also the slower season in that bay right now, so consider bank crabbing by the bathrooms in October - you should be able to catch multiple keepers!
@josephmars20
@josephmars20 3 года назад

There’s a dock out there and we gotta throw it right off the dock and we catch crabs left and right out there actually it was legal to actually cook them on the deck on the dock to cook them. I don’t know why but anyhow yeah Siuslaw river Florence Oregon that was back in the 80s Mercedes that I miss that place.
