Awards season has once again come to CineFix and this year to celebrate the Oscars we’re looking at the best of the best. Because, like the Academy Awards, we here at CineFix have an impeccable record of always picking the objectively best films for our lists, we’re going category by category to check Oscar’s work. Here are our picks for the Top 10 Best Oscar Winners of All Time.
Whether or not the oscars televise every category, there’s no higher achievement than bringing home that little gold statue. For editors on films like Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King or Mad Max: Fury Road, to the cinematographers awarded for their work on Apocalypse Now, 1917 or classic film noir like The Third Man, the screenwriters of everything from The Apartment to Pulp Fiction, the award can make a career even if they’re not as glamorous as the acting and directing awards.
And most importantly the award for Best Movie List script goes to Billy Jackson and Best Editing in a Movie List or Long Form Film Analysis goes to Justin Donaldson. Without any further ado…
The oscar goes to…
10 - Best Editing - All That Jazz - Alan Heim
9 - Best Supporting Actor - The Dark Knight - Heath Ledger as The Joker
8 - Best Screenplay - Citizen Kane - Herman J. Mankiewicz and Orson Welles
7 - Best Supporting Actress - Precious - Mo’Nique as Mary
6 - Best Foreign Film - Fanny and Alexander - Ingmar Bergman
5 - Best Actor - Raging Bull - Robert De Niro as Jake LaMotta
4 - Best Cinematography - Barry Lyndon - John Alcott
3 - Best Actress - Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf - Elizabeth Taylor as Martha
2 - Best Director - Lawrence of Arabia - David Lean
1 - Best Picture - The Godfather - Francis Ford Coppola, Albert S. Ruddy

In a film appreciation class, for fun we let Barry Lyndon run (chapter skips and fast tracking--it was on laserdisc) and someone whose back was to the screen woud call out "pause". Almost all the time, the image could be framed and hung on a wall on some chateau or art museum. It is quite possibly one of the most beautiful movies I've ever seen. The fact that the story is engaging and is masterfully directed is icing on an already delicious cake.

Definitely would've had Chinatown as Best Screenplay for this list. While the script for Citizen Kane is good, Chinatown reads like a novel and Robert Towne really crafted a story that flows seamlessly and acts like a true noir even if the film never existed. I recently saw Chinatown and I think it's dated. I couldn't even get through Citizen Kane but at the time that movie must have been mind-blowing. I feel that Citizen Kane is a "safe pick" that would offend the least amount of people. It's like asking the actors if they've seen the movie they just worked on and usually they say no because they know the next question is going to be "what did you think of it?" and "how would you rate your performance?". I'm not a film snob that hates movies, those movies aren't bad at all, but rarely does a movie become a timeless classic that anyone can enjoy nearly as much as when they came out.

Russell lost his arms in the war. He was basically playing himself, going through the motions of his new reality on screen. That is documentary film making, NOT acting. He shouldn't have been nominated for an acting category at all. Heath Ledger WAS actually acting. I'm not impressed with people called actors when they are basically playing themselves. That is reality tv.

More or less hot take: the awards for Best Original Screenplay and Adapted Screenplay often feel like the Silver Medal / consolation prize for a Best Picture nominee that didn't actually win Best Picture. And especially the Original Screenplay Award OFTEN goes to the "coolest", most innovative and cleverly written nominee: like Pulp Fiction, Get Out, Her, Eternal Sunshine..., Promising Young Woman or Lost in Translation. I know: what makes a movie "cool" or "fresh" is very subjective, but Licorice Pizza winning this year's BOS award is a safe bet at this point.

To say that Lawrence of Arabia was the work of a genius would be an understatement. It must have required something way more superior than ordinary human will or skill to create it. I always like to tell myself that David Lean must have temporarily gone mad to make it. No sane person could have crafted such an epic. The way such profound ideas and feelings are conveyed through just words, visuals and music, the film represents the apotheosis of cinema. Lean (and of course, the screenwriters, actors and the cinematographer) fully exploited the potential of the medium of cinema to give viewers an experience akin to a spiritual revelation of the universal truths of life all in the guise of a biopic.

What a great list and can’t agree more with so many of your selections. The only thing that felt like it was completely forgotten here was Best Original Score. You hit on editing, acting, cinematography, directing, and picture, but one of the most crucial elements in any Oscar contender is the score. Imagining Schindler’s list without John Williams masterful score to accompany it, or Irwin Kostal’s score for the Sound of Music, or James Horner and his epic score for Titanic, the legendary music of Howard Shore for LOTR, or even a snub like Zimmers groundbreaking score for Inception. Any of those films without the score not only would have not won best picture, but probably wouldn’t have received a nomination in the first place. So, I’d love if you made a Top Oscar Sound Scores for films where w/o their iconic sound, wouldn’t be the masterpieces they are.

Good lists. Thought Olivia de Havilland's performance in The Heiress should have been mentioned. Her transformation from a wallflower to a woman with a cold heart who accepted her fate as a spinster was one of the best performances on film. Directed by William Wyler who as a director generated the most Academy Award acting nominations than any other director.

Judging how much the "Life is beautiful" have scenes in clip, probably it was a close call between that movie and "Fanny and Alexander" for the best foreigners movie spot. But CineFix loves their Bergman, "Fanny and Alexander" took a couple of slot in earlier lists as well.

There are many more. I personally think it's 8 1/2. Life is beautiful is not the best foreign movie. Many Italian movies, French movies, Japanese movies etc are better.

Two ideas for future video lists would be contrasts to this list. 1. Greatest Oscar Losses (best of each category that were nominated but did not win), and 2. Greatest Oscar Snubs (best of each category that should have been nominated and maybe even won, but did not even receive a nomination) Maybe you've done a list like this already? I don't know, either way they seem like good ideas and I would be very interested to see your take on them.

The jab at Shakespeare in Love at the end there is hilarious! But tbh I don't find that it is forgettable at all! I remember watching it as a teen when I started taking interest in films, the story within the story and the story behind the film, it all is just fascinating! The epitome of forcing stars to line up in a way.

@@ngbarone I read the other day and critiques at the time had it like around 90 out of 100. Very very similar to Saving Private Ryan. At the time it was definitely considered Oscar caliber. And don't think that it's the only time someone kinds of bargain The Academy with the power of money and their huge campaigns. It happens absolutely every year. This year it's happening with Dune and Being the Ricardos. It has always happenned, and it always will.

It took me 2 days after seeing this and think that you guys and girls should make a list of the best non english language movies of all time. I've always taken notes of the movies you list to watch and I really miss a full list with the greats on other languages, from non traditional film makers (ok, I know the list will filled with Bergman, Kurosawa and Godard, but try to understand my point). Latin american, african, middle eastern movies are rarely listed in any list. That would be a huge challenge, I know, but it'd also be a great contribution for all of us who like to discover new stories from the world and I'd be very glad to know your picks.

The only one I really disagreed with was cinematography but even that is just a matter of taste. And both the two films I always think of -- The Third Man and The Godfather -- you make in other categories.

At the moment you mentioned Frances Ford Coppola's meticulous attention to detail, it featured the shot from the Godfather where Sonny swings a punch about a foot away from his brother in law's face - perhaps the most famous editing mistake in Hollywood history? Second to the storm trooper hitting his head maybe... 🙂Great choice though, great film!! Just made me smile... thanks for another fine video 🙂
