I go back and watch the 92 debates frequently. I liked Perot a lot, and Bill obviously had his issues, but I think we sometimes forget how exceptionally intelligent Bill was. Absolute political genius and knew how to play the game. I don’t know if Perot would’ve been able to get in there and really change things too much but it’s fun to imagine. Glad Mr Beat is at 1 million followers!

I’m a professional political consultant and party committee member in PA. Almost all of us on both sides wish that our elections were shorter and more like a British timeline where you have 6 weeks to campaign. It’s hard to get volunteers to help for 2 or 3 months (depends if your state has mail in voting). It’s a long and exhausting campaign and then primaries start everything over again by mid January. Money is another huge problem citizens United was totally wrong and a lot of the people on both sides agree with that too.

6:08 I defintely agree about character being pretty subjective. Being a good guy didn’t make Carter a good president, and being a bad guy didn’t make LBJ a bad president.
Also, character only matters to the extent that it affects your actions. If you're a good person inside, but you still support bad policies, then the fact that you're a good person doesn't really "matter." Likewise, if you're a terrible person, but support good policies anyway, then you're still doing good for the country.

If George Wallace had won a few more Southern states in 1968, he would have deadlocked the Electoral College, which might have thrown the election into the House of Representatives. He might have done that had not his running mate, General Curtis LeMay, advocated dropping nuclear bombs in Vietnam. The Wallace campaign staff said in that scenario they would have gone to Nixon and negotiated for Wallace to potentially have his electors. The big question is what would Wallace have wanted that Nixon was willing and able to give? Maybe a Cabinet appointment, like Attorney General.
I agree with you Chris on Jennings Bryan with the trial. He was simply standing up to his beliefs in creationism id assume. It may be crazy for some but that was his belief and faith.
Mr. Beat's mention of John Anderson brought back a memory from the old Doonesbury cartoon strip by GB Trudeau. The MC, Mike Doonesbury, was shown working for Anderson's campaign. One of the books that collected the strips was called _He's Never Heard of You, Either,_ with the cover showing Mike speaking to a woman about Anderson.

I know I’m late to the party but before watching, Senator Henry M. “Scoop” Jackson, who lost the 1976 Democratic nomination to Carter, immediately comes to mind as someone who’s nomination or election could have taken America in a completely different direction. Scoop Jackson, while socially liberal and a major environmentalist, advocated a strong and robust foreign policy during an era when the Democratic Party went in the complete opposite direction, and after he lost the nomination to Carter most of his staff and associates eventually abandoned the party and went to work for Ronald Reagan. Now I know Scoop Jackson would never be on Mr Beat’s list, as Matt tends to be extremely isolationist on foreign policy, but as a personal favorite of mine I have to add Jackson into the ring especially given the point of divergence in the Democratic Party that ended with the creation of the Reagan coalition.

Back in 2020, they passed every single COVID bill almost unanimously. The patriot act, in 2001 passed with a 99-1 vote in the senate. The parties work together ALL the time.

If you're interested in Ross Perot there's a new video from a largely sports channel, Secret Base, called Reform! I remember that he had dropped out of the race because he had heard that one of the parties was going to circulate an altered photo (we'd call it Photoshopping now) of his daughter, and spoke about it on 60 Minutes. He had quite the impact at the time and the behind-the-scenes happenings in the Reform party were crazy. It might be worth a reaction.
If Wendell Willkie had one the election of 1940 and decided to run for reelection in 1944 he would’ve died about a month before Election Day being that he died Oct 8th 1944. I often wondered how that would have changed the election of 1944 and history perhaps.
Perot was my first election (I was 19 years old in 1992.) I voted for him twice (1992 & 1996) and even spoke at a rally in the Midwest representing "College students for Perot".

Election Day 1992 I was in the 3rd grade. My school did an election to see how the kids would have voted. I voted for Ross Perot and he actually won the election at my school.
1 Day Voting is what we (America) need Campaigning season should be on election year only (Spring to Fall) And Election Day being the only day for voting Also unlike Mr. Beat, I really don't care about the character of a President. World Leaders can be good people but they have to be careful to not show weakness to other countries. So sometimes, even if WE don't like some actions some leaders take, you need to show strength in order to appear strong against any nation who wants to oppose the United States

I'm sorry to be one of those annoying fact checkers, but I just wanted to point out a contradictory statement you made in this video that goes against something you stated in a previous video. In this video, when Mr. Beat brings up Ross Perot, you mentioned that you had voted for him in 1996 (your first election). However, when you did your presidential tier ranking video with Mr. Beat (over on his channel), when discussing Bill Clinton, you mentioned that you had voted for Clinton instead, with Clinton being "the only Democrat [you] ever voted for." due to his more conservative leaning policies vs more modern Democratic candidates. So I'm now curious: was your statement in THIS video regarding voting for Perot in 96 correct, or was your statement in the presidential tier video regarding voting for Clinton in 96 correct?

Such well educated, well-rounded and level headed individuals who know so much about my favorite subject and actually make well-thought out, rational decisions behind why you guys feel certain ways about history. I know this is not an "international" subject, focussing on the US presidential system- but points that both Matt and Chris hi-light about two party systems holds true everywhere. Here in the UK i think we realistically have two parties on a national level Labour (centre left) and Conservative (centre right)- for you folks in the US you would consider both to be some level of social democratic. The only time we have Challenges to this when both parties are seen as not totally trustworthy or "Useless" in some respect. Most recently in 2010 at the height of the "banking crisis" where the Scottish Nationalists had taken the previously Labour dominated Scottish seats and no one rally trusted the either of the parties to fix the issues ( incumbent Labour were seen as the cause of the problems here and Conservatives were seen as wanting to freeze spending on the NHS etc) so the Liberal Democrats did well enough to hold a balance of power in an election where Conservatives did not get a majority. Note this power sharing didnt ultimately go well for the Liberals, who were accused of "selling out for power" to the Conservatives at the next election in 2015 and lost most of that political capital they had gained in 2010- let that be a warning to future leaders!
I only knew about John B. Anderson myself was because when I was in college half a million years ago in 2006 my US history prof said he voted for him in 1980.
What about Vice President William Wheeler? He possibly could've gotten the GOP nomination in 1880 (probably chose not to due to health issues.) One of my favorite quotes from him when Roscoe Conklling offered him anything he wanted if he would just go along with the party. He rejected it and said, "Mr. Conkling, there is nothing in the gift of the State of New York which will compensate me for the forfeiture of my self-respect."
Great Ross Perot impression Chris 👍😊 Wonder what the USA would look like if instead of it’s President and 2 houses system it had gone with a parliamentary system with no royalty. In a parliamentary system with a Prime Minister and two elected Houses could it have worked better? Also what if instead of a first past the post system the USA went with a proportional system?
The only quibble I have is with a statement early in your video about having 'our best choices' for president this year. Considering the meat grinder America (i.e. the media, the people, etc.) puts the candidates through, why would someone who could be considered 'our best choice' objectively (impossible, I know), but why would this person but themselves or their family through that. Our best and brightest are scientist, engineers, maybe even clergy. But they would, rightfully so in my opinion, steer clear of the circus we call presidential politics. Those that do run, my hat goes out to them. If we can't get our 'best' choices, it's our fault. We get the government we deserve IMHO.
@32:15, Chris are you saying that you are against the direct election of US Senators? I understand being against a lot of the progressive elements of a populist platform (I am a progressive so I agree with those elements, but I understand not agreeing with them.) But the direct election of US Senators by the people, as opposed to by state legislators, is in my mind an unquestionably good step in the democratic direction. Maybe that one just got caught in the cross-fire? I'd be curious to hear your take. Maybe I can learn something here from you. Thanks!
Yep. I'm 100% in favor of repealing the 17th Amendment. The whole point is that it's not supposed to BE democratic. We're a federal republic, and the 17th amendment was a step toward pure democracy, which in my mind (and that of the founding fathers) is not a good one.
What if most people in a state want to be represented by one party in the state legislature and the opposite party in the US Senate? Why take away that ability? Besides, removing direct election of Senators will give both parties even more reason to gerrymander the state legislature.
I would never assume to dispute a scholar’s opinion about who is the best, but H Ross Perot does not belong on this list. He was not selflessly trying to help the people is the United States, he had an exclusive and very lucrative contract at an International port in Texas that was used as a model for the NAFTA treaty... the treaty that he said was going to suck jobs into Latin America. When (if) NAFTA passed, his would become just one of many companies that could bring in goods from out of the country without having to pay tariffs. This candidacy was about keeping his exclusive deal so he could import and sell domestically cheaper than his competitors.
I think you would do well to take a look at the 1980 election. It was a time of stagflation and a confrontation with the Soviet Union. I was two months shy of being able to vote and still consider it to be the most pivotal election of my lifetime. Just to add on, a lot of people considered (and still consider) Reagan to be the war hawk and Carter to be the dove, but in reality Carter had already proposed massive increases in defense spending after the Soviets invaded Afghanistan. In fact Reagan spent less on defense than Carter was planning to spend had he won a second term. Of course, Reagan was much more belligerent towards Iran than Carter.
I always find these topics fun because it's cool to educate people that Democrats have not had an incumbent office replaced with a new candidate for Presidency and go on to maintain the office of The President since James Buchanan succeeded Franklin Pierce. Grover Cleveland, Woodrow Wilson, FDR, JFK, Carter, Clinton, Obama and Biden all followed Republicans. Only 2 Dem Presidents succeeded Democrats, Truman in 45 when Roosevelt died and LBJ in 63 when JFK was assassinated, so neither were incumbent replacements. The Republicans went back to back in 1988 which was the last Party to Party transfer of the Presidency (Which means it could be 40 years on the dot if it happens in 2028 should Biden retain the Presidency this fall).

Hey, John B. Anderson isn't so obscure to me -- I voted for him! I even went to his rally in Minneapolis, and friends of mine saw me on television. While my namesake (Matt Beat) didn't mention it, one of the things that Anderson, a Republican, did to promote unity was to select a Democrat, Wisconsin Governor Patrick Lucey, as his running mate. I felt that needed to be mentioned.
I did like Perot's three info-mercials. They were more informative than the nearly useless debates we have now that are more like a battle of one-liners. John Anderson almost chose Walter Cronkite as his running mate.
