Reminds me of a quote from a french biologist named Jean Rostand : "Kill one man, and you are a murderer. Kill millions of men, and you are a conqueror. Kill them all, and you are a god.". This quote was just slightly altered by Megadeth in their song Captive Honour, which is how i discovered it

I played my games early in the morning before breakfast, like morning cartoons. And that was when I got to the phosphorus scene. Young me felt like shit after playing that, and played for about an hour trying to shoot my way out of that scene. After that failed I was called to come and eat. As I sat down and ate my eggs, I just stared at my family joking around, laughing, carefree. It was a awful feeling, me feeling like a war criminal while they talked about trivial things like groceries and whatnot. It made me really put things into perspective.

Try to think about what these games are trying to tell you with its story, gameplay, message etc. We might like to think that we shouldn't involve politics in video games, since it is just a medium of entertainment. But video games are a product of its time and does reflect realities or beliefs that exist in our world. PBS Idea Channel has an interesting video discussing games like Call of Duty. Since the game company pays gunmakers for likeness fees of their trademarked designs, can you consider buying and playing Call of Duty a political statement? There are other videos and essays that delve into the complexities of this genre more deeply and I encourage everyone to take a look at them so that you can come up with your own conclusions.

@@zamkusen Neglected looking into this video of yours admittedly, but I'll just leave this one grim aspect of Spec Ops: The Line's message that I've already expounded elsewhere: This game's message and themes are so powerful, that it actually transcended the "modern military" shooter genre it deconstructed and criticized. It's actually a deconstruction and critique of video gaming in its entirety. Spec Ops: The Line stripped thoroughly the suspension of disbelief we always had and took for granted in playing video games to show how messed up it really is killing and hurting in games (blowing out the "it's just a game"/"don't take it too seriously" card out of the water), and most importantly how shallow and empty that power/hero/achievement fantasy is in the medium (saving and helping someone, earning prizes, the scores, the trophies, and yes, the _surprise mechanics)._ It applies to not just shooters, but of course to other games regardless of how innocuous they are or how unrelated they are to the ostentatious scope of SO:TL. For my personal experience, SO:TL's biggest victim was not a shooter, but a JRPG: Chrono Trigger. Like how SO:TL started, CT was about taking the opportunity to save the day (i.e., time traveling to save the world's future from Lavos). And then, as shown in Chrono Cross, the consequences of those time travels made things go from bad to worse, resorting to sort of a damage control in the process (which was successful for the most part). That realization made me look at CT differently, where it was no different to what Walker did in SO:TL. Spec Ops: The Line is going to make us look at virtually every other video game in existence through the former's perspective, make us think twice about (re)playing those games, right down to the ones that defined our childhood and helped us grow up through trying times, and ultimately render them unenjoyable, unplayable, and morally messed up. And the only few video games that are still left playable would be the ones that could dare match SO:TL's themes on the human condition and the medium.

Didn't the game always show some progression on mastering of some weapon or something else when you were killing enemies? It kinda ruins your point about not rewarding player from gameplay perspective. It would've been better if instead there was just kill counter, so in the end you will see this number and realize that this "high score" is bad and not good.

"Walker insists he had no choice, just like the player insists the game didn't give him a choice" From a technical perspective, the game does not give you any in-game choice that alters what Walker does. NONE. You cannot avoid shooting the white phospho and (afaik) you cannot turn back and call for help (as the original mission requires) after finding the first people. Your only option is to shut the game down. But if it's fiction, then it truly is inconsequential whether we press on or not, and if it (or any other shooter game, for that matter) is, somehow, full of real and conscious beings, then stopping the game would do nothing more than halting their world altogether. Their world does not peacefully go on in the background. It ceases to be altogether. Progressing through this game is like progressing through a book. And if first person shooters turned into books, where the protagonist does the killing and feels accomplished about it, would it still be the consumer's fault for continuing to read? And no, the game does not normalize violence. No sane person has any excuse to not tell the difference between pixels and real world lives. (though disgust towards such games is ok) Being numb(er) to gore and death does not make us worse people. It makes us stoic, and it allows us to be more logical in preventing/dealing with stuff like this in real life. People bent on murder will murder anyway. We play first person shooters to quench the heart of darkness in each of us. The results are good, but somewhat mixed, but since it's entertainment and the effect is neutral at worst, then why shun them?

We need to tell people to stop playing games so we get that message clear.

Playing games IS harmless, mostly. Learning about this stuff will help us understand the difference between defeating a non living bot and killing actual people
