In reference to #1 on this list, I was an Ultima Player during Tokuno/Mondain's Legacy. Completing Champion Spawns in PvP areas was an absolute nightmare. You knew what you were getting into when heading to the PvP zones (risk vs. reward), but there were times it was just impossible. Think of it as doing a WoW raid/M+ with no private instance lock and being flagged for PvP the whole time. You would just get wrecked by griefers and campers unless you assembled a good team to hold them off while the rest of the group worked on the PvE parts. It was fun in its own right, but it got old after a while. The lure to WoW for me was the chance to do end game esque challenges and not having to worry about getting ganked fighting a boss. I do miss the skill in Ultima where you could basically manipulate an enemy ghost and disrupt their respawn. I think that was some Necromancer skill. Its been almost 20 years lol.

"This continuity got rug pulled" Well said and a great point. Something I love about classic is the permanence of your character and to somewhat your decisions to play a class/spec. Things like this don't align well with modern gaming where QoL and flexibility of playstyle is widely liked by many, but it's still something I see value in and enjoy.

WoW, vent and skype were most of my social interactions in 2006-2012. Most of my friends existed in that space, irl or online. Glad someone mentioned it. One of the biggest pulls for me to play back then was the community and relationships I had within that space.

I hate when people say "Vanilla was easy" because they experienced Classic. No shit man. If a soldier went into a tribal war with a tank it would be easy for him to win the war wouldn't it

To this day, I still talk to some of the friends I met in WoW almost 20 years ago in Vanilla. We had several couples in my old Vanilla guild that met from WoW and got married. Very difficult to find that kind of connection in any game today...or in social media in general.

because back then it where ppl who liked rpg and where nerdy, finding your own kind kinda makes connection easy. today wow is a complete mess of playerbase especially retail is a complete nutcase pool. and classic is just full of hardcore players who dont wanna use theyr brains but rather use all the information other ppl gathered for them to be INSANE at the game by simple braindead execution of dumb processes to generate the results. thats simply not gaming.

34:40 - to this day I still remember (although I don't remember the name) the druid that was always standing ontop of the mailbox outside of Org bank in cat form. was ALWAYS There somehow! Xar if you happen to see this you're gonna appreciate this one, I remembered this as i was typing about the druid...I STILL remember the hangout spot i was always at in Runescape on World 9 by the side of the falador east bank back when it was the "east" bank. there was always a little community of people there, sometimes there were drop parties there, it was good times.

The effectiveness of game progress and items in general is such a huge and valid point imo. Every now and then over the course of WoW there were groups and communities claiming the game was too hard and blizzards eventually started to make everything so easy accessable, to the point where almost the whole games has features that require almost 0 effort by players to master them - it kinda takes the spark from WoW in a way. Of course it's nice when a game speaks to a wider range of ppl and mindsets but isn't the very early stage of WoW what attracted to many ppl in the first place? Great example for that would be the release of classic wow which pulled so many players from retail into it and even player who haven't played WoW for years. I strongly believe there has to be a way to shape War Within and even the whole Soul Saga in a way that makes u feel like u're experiencing special stuff over n over. Items/equipment is just one category which contributes to that topic but also achievements...which have lost so much value over the past expansions.
@oktober-vh6gl
@oktober-vh6gl 18 дней назад
there is an intangible too... it's all of these reasons together as one essence. Since discovering WoW, I've stopped playing all other games. I have consoles that just collect dust now. There are times where I go back and play an old game, or take a run through Minecraft or something, but it's really rare. I have trouble thinking of myself as a "gamer" as I'm not... I just play WoW. When a product is so far ahead of all others, it's hard to ignore it, and then once you're in it... it's hard to leave, even if something "better" comes along. Game of Thrones did the same thing to me. Once I was watching that, all other TV shows seemed pointless and a complete waste of time by comparison. WoW does the same thing. My fav game, even a decade after it's release was always Super Metroid. I loved X-Com UFO Defense for the Playstation. I used to love sports games too. I can't think of the last time I had time to game... and didn't choose WoW. Then they gave me/us Classic... then Classic Hardcore... then Classic up to Cata.... and now we're mere months away from the next expansion. There's just no time for other games, lol.

I spent MONTHS scouring the Internet for EverQuest 2 content and preparing and finally building a new computer to play EQ2, which would be my first MMO ever. Being that it was my first MMO ever I was blown away. I couldn’t believe I’d never heard of this genre before this game. I was hooked. WoW came out 1 month after and I scoffed at it, it looks so cartoonish and way worse graphics (it wasn’t worse, just a different style). I was a hater. My new GPU died and I went to Fry’s Electronics to buy a replacement, while I was in line there were copies of WoW on display and I said “what the hell, the graphics won’t even make my new PC sweat let’s give it a try.” 1 hour in and I was hooked, I never logged into EQ2 again after ONE WoW session, insane…. I was literally a newcomer to MMOs, had no idea what I was getting into.

Finally people are realizing MMOs are a form of social media. If only now they realize that it was not Wrath/Cata's fault WoW started losing subs, but it was Facebook's. People have a limited amount of willpower to socialize online and Facebook drains all of it. All MMOs as a genre started suffering when Facebook reached critical mass after 2010.

10 reasons why wow became popular: 1.) LFD 2.) LFR 3.) Leveling 4.) new leveling zones every expac 5.) soloable leveling 6.) easy to learn hard to master classes 7.) Unlike everquest which catered to a hardcore crowd, WoW adressed a broad audience at start 8.) A lot of content 9.) Distinct classes and specs 10.) being a jack of all trades

@boganbattalion7088
@boganbattalion7088 Месяц назад
It was popular at the start because you didn't really need skill as much as u needed gear which meant losers with no life could dominate, the game started dying off when they made it so everyone could get gear and then everyone started quitting! That simple, yeh of coarse a bunch of really talented players stayed but that is pretty much the reason

people may wonder why I hate this bloke so much, he tries his hardest to ruin the game for players like me who work their butts off and just want to have some fun in my downtime which is basically once a week, he tries to pretend the game is in a good state when it's clearly not which really peeves me off because the things that need fixing get tossed aside and they focus on crap no one cares about because it's his only thing in life he is so scared that the game will fail if anyone says anything negative but it's the exact opposite, the game wil fail if use pretend it's ok when clearly not. Look at SOD! Sod is destroyed for good on my server, The so called balance of factions has completely ruined the game, it was even at the start but now so many horde players have had enough, alliance sit at every dungeon, they will farm the hell out of low lvls and even camp their spawns and send people to the spirit healer, they camp Incursions and all of this happens when leveling but as soon as you hit lvl cap they leave you be? It's an actual joke. I joined alliance and they actually sit in chat all day trying to say they have no choice and do it because horde does it but that is utter crap because I could just lvl with no problems at all from horde. I deleted my alliance characters because they are literal scum! Now I will never return to SOD because for 1 they destroyed pvp with 50% dam nerf, 2 alliance are out numbering horde in a massive way and then farming low levels, 3 the AH is way out of control and far too expensive! SOD is actually the worst experience I have ever had in wow. I honestly don't think that max lvls should be able to target low lvls, no matter how much I get killed by them I could still never do it because I know how it feels, if low lvls actually have a chance then no problem but that is not the case, xaryu will act like him killing a lvl 50 paladin at lvl 40 when pal is lvl 50 proves different but lets be real it's a paladin vs mage? Who cares
@boganbattalion7088
@boganbattalion7088 Месяц назад
Xaryu hates retail because he is old news now, there are a lot of better players hence why he never competes in AWC. No job, not a professional gamer and now he is trying his hardest to make SOD stay a game where no life losers and the unemployed can get an advantage. Weak as piss

wow became popular because it was an online platform WORLD which had all the known rpg mechanics and tenfolded its values because of a permanent world. nowadays rpgs have been INSDANELY GOOD but mmorpg didnt catch up with those so an mmorpg is ONLY an online platform of a bad rpg in comparison. a good mmorpg would need to equal rpg quality of this day and age will harmiously incorporate a permanent rich world.
