Sarcasm, plaid shirts, "being non mainstream and embracing it" and coffee shops were already a thing in the early 90's. Hipster culture is just a lot of bastardized 90's retro without context.
Every era is just a revival and combination of a bygone one, it’s just how things are, honestly hipsters and millennials don’t even hide the fact they are trusting to emulate the 90’s, and 5 to 10 years whatever is in style, will be a throwback to another era, fashion has been working like this going back too far to properly keep track of
Francis Vincent Ong “plaid shirts” have been a thing for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. Kinda funny how hateful people are over clothes and communication, you people are blind
That's a pretty vague definition. Can you just admit that part of the description most people would give of a hipster would include 'beard/waxed moustache, thick rimmed glasses, frequents coffee shops"? To pretend there is an objective definition of a "hipster" which doesn't include superficial judgments on someone's appearance, is disingenuous.
everyone is trying to look the same, while the real hipsters are people not knowing what it is and how they are called. this is a mind blowing fucked up thing
sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo true! Visit Williamsburg, Brooklyn. So many white hipster transplants from Ohio, etc. thinking they're more New Yorkers than real New Yorkers. Pretentious
Man, I like a lot of the things on this list.... too bad hipster made them pretentious because good coffee and old vinyl are always fun. They can keep the unicycles, haha.
Hipsters are great. Every couple months a retiring hipster sells their entire vinyl collection on craigslist or discogs. You can pick stuff up super cheap as they tend to be hasty about erasing their past when moving into a new identity. This has been happening for almost 15+ years now. Give me a can of folgers and jug of cream. It all tastes the same to me.
TenThumbs Productions Is has been a good night for me and I love you and I love Jesus Christ and the disciples and the lord and we are all that you love
I have a lot of the traits too, but the difference is I'm in my 40s (not a Millennial) and a lot of the stuff I like is because I remember when they were new and they're often made better than modern stuff. I have a beard because I've had one for over 20 years, I look better with one and my dad had one. I hate that it's become a trend actually. I like Vinyl because it sounds slightly better, but usually I just listen to music on my computer or on my phone. I have a single speed bike (difference to a Fixed gear is it has a freewheel) because I like bikes, I have about 7 bikes and it's just one of them. I use Fuji camera (they look a bit retro, but I use them because they give good colour and are fun to use). I used to be a pro photographer and i don't want heavy cameras anymore. Wear wayfarer glasses because I like Raybans, they're timeless and I NEED THEM TO SEE. I'm not really sarcastic, facetious maybe. Sarcasm is just being mean. Can't stand skinny jeans, I got into boxers and very loose pants when I used to skate in the early 90s and never got into the tight jean/pants thing. My T-Shirts aren't ironic I just like old things people find ironic now. I shop at OpShops (Thrift Stores) because you can get cheap clothes etc. there. I don't like paying full price for stuff. I love second hand things. Especially bikes. So I'm not a hipster, I'm just old.
Yep, real men have beards no longer than what grows out over a couple of weeks because they are too lazy to shave. I haven't shaved in nearly 40 years -- I just periodically *mow* my head... If I go more than 3 weeks between mowing (like when I'm out of the country for extended periods of time), I find it very irritating.

While I'm a bit old to fall for the "hipster" trap, when I was younger, I had the same attitude about music. I got over it pretty quickly when I realized that more people knowing about band I like is actually a good thing. The more people that hear you and hear about you, the better your chances of success and the longer your career will be. I'm sure I could come up with a dozen bands that I loved and were amazing but broke up after their first or second album. They don't break up because they suck or because the band members hate each other. They break up because it's expensive to be in a band and if they're not making money then they're wasting their time. Now, when I find an amazing musical act, I try to tell as many people as possible just so those acts can continue to make music for ME. It's completely selfish but in a good way.
especially when you live in coffee exporter country like mine. Each regionally grown coffee bean have distinguishable taste and is really good~ (and a LOT cheaper than starbucks)
I hate how people assume that, if you enjoy history, literature, older films, fashions from other eras, etc, that must mean you're a pretentious hipster. No, it doesn't. Enjoying the classics wasn't always fashionable. People used to get called "nerds" and "geeks" and were seen as weird for liking things like that. I know I was as a kid.
I definitely remember being called a loser for this specific shit. Being in the drama club was lame but now it’s cool but not? Sometimes I wish it was 2002 when hipster was being unique not the “cool wannabes ”. It’s like the “cool” people still manage to degrade the so called nerds cause they are cool being unique smh
I agree, I used to get bullied for this shit especially wearing glasses. Now kids who don’t even need glasses wear them. Being a nerd/geek is the in thing now. It annoys me.
Labels and their meanings are constantly changing, it's damn near annoying to try and keep up with what they mean. End of day, just do you and be smart with how you "label" things.
It's kinda ironic seeing a comment that has now become a *popular* opinion *now a days* in a video about a group of people who don't like things that are *popular* *now a days*
Hipsters ruined beards for the rest of us. Used to it made you look like a lumberjack, now it makes you look like a someone who wouldn't even know how to hold an ax.
A friend of mine who grew up on a farm way up in the mountains and now lives in the city can't wear the clothes he is used too without being seen as a hipster. They ruin everything
Because I wear a beard, I'd like to thank all the hipsters of the World for making people think I have no upper body strength (or lower body strength for that matter) because I might look slightly like a hipster.
Collecting records doesn't make you a hipster, allot of music never got transferred from 78rpm to 33rpm and even more never from 33 to digital. It is hard to get a digital release of a record never released to digital. Even the quadraphonic records of famous bands like jethro tull, pink floyd, black sabbath, bachman turner overdrive, 3 out of the 4 Beatles, never got re-released as there wasn't any medium to re-release them too, and these were mixes made when the bands were alive and in control of their music. I read John Lennon actually pushed the sound engineer out of the way to personally mix one of his quad records himself. I'm not saying records sound better, I'm saying for some albums, like half of Johnny Maddox's discography, they are the only available option. Also the concept that a sound file, something I associate as being inherently digital, can be recorded without electricity to a non electromagnetic storage medium and played back on another machine that doesn't use electricity is simply amazing. No other type of information is as limited in its methods of preservation and there is to my knowledge only one way to store this information without electricity involved. From an engineering and archival perspective it is fascinating. For example they were able to 3d scan the 100+ year old Thomas Edison voice records to play them despite no proper playback machine in the world still existing and the glass records were shattered, CD's on the other hand are expected to have a relatively short lifespan before the plastic clouds rendering them unusable. Not to mention modern turntable design is more complicated then a car, every single solution creates 3 problems and you have to consider material resonance frequencies, linear velocity, angular velocity, torque, centrifugal force compensation on a pivoting lever(antiskate), vibration isolation, momentum and some complicated geometry, and that's before you get to the capacitance of the cabling or the electronic potential of the shells and of course the basic electronics of which the choices in types of components and circuit controls also create and solve problems. About half of physics is there. It is amazing just how complicated such a simple design is when done right, and every single design whether $10,000 or $20 can only ever be a series of trade offs.
Nothing wrong with wearing glasses. I've worn them for 49 of my years of life- since 1st grade. The problem is the plastic horn rims that were the style back in the 1950's and 60's. I had no choice but to wear them when I was a small kid and I hated seeing my mother wearing the cat's eye style of horn rimmed glasses as I grew up. I finally was able to ditch them and start wearing metal/wire rimmed glasses in my teens. When I joined the Army I was issued a pair of plastic horn rimmed safety glasses with non-reflective lens. They were commonly referred to as "BC's", or birth control glasses, because you'd never get laid if you wore them. Though the styles have improved a bit I still have a strong prejudice against them (plastic horn rims, that is. NOT glasses in general). I put my glasses on the first thing in the morning as I need them to see. But if I had to go back to wearing plastic horn rim BC's, then I think I'd rather spend the remainder of my life in a permanent squint. If anyone ever sees someone wearing just rims with no glasses or with regular glass (non-Rx) so they can look cool, tell them if they use a walker they'll be the hit of any party and the opposite sex will be slobbering at their feet !
+LightningZERO 88 you didn't pay attention.. At the beginning of the video they say that just liking one or two things on the list don't make you a hipster.... It's when you put everything together .
Youre goth..a hipster A mod..a hipster A punk..a hipster A ted..a hipster My new rebellion..dress like nothing and listen to no music. Omg..am I hipster for rebelling??? Doh!
Conservative youth is the new punk. It's no longer rebellious to say you hate capitalism and love socialism. Hipsters are also the ones that use shame tactics these days. It's not synonymous with the ultra religious anymore. Neither is hating a ton of stuff.
not really. theres some crossover, but not much. hippies actually had a reason for their culture, anti war and violence. if the vietnam war never happened, there would never have been hippies. hipsters are just anti mainstream and want to be post modern and ironic. theres no political movement linked to it.
There is a certain amount of overlap between hipsters and hippies (organic food, anti-mainstream), but they are two different groups. Hippies don't enjoy things ironically the way hipsters do and don't have the stylish appearance hipsters go for. Also, dreadlocks and yoga are a hippie thing, not a hipster thing.
Fabian Valenzuela sort of, but hipsters seem very forced, while I thought hippies were natural (wasn't there wouldn't know) would need to ask someone who was a teen or older in the 60's
Let's not forget Silverlake, Echo Park, and Los Feliz in Los Angeles. Those three neighborhoods run into each other making one long, twisty, hilly expanse of artisinal irony. In the San Fernando Valley, there's the No Ho Arts District.
+Chris Jay Becker Texas hipsters are still Texans in the end. Very tight and proud with everything Texan and TexMex culture. They'll be seen wearing the "Welcome to Austin, Please don't move here" shirts sometimes. And if you don't know who Selena Quintanilla is, they can tell you're an outsider.
Hipsters developed from non-conformity, but eventually they developed into a sub-culture that is just as conformist within itself as any other sub-culture. A true non-conformist willingly conforms to people around him when it seems practical (without seeking approval), and doesn't conform when it isn't practical (ignoring any potential disapproval). If a mainstream product appears to be just as functional as a non-mainstream version, he will go ahead and use it. But if the non-mainstream has better function, has better use/cost value, he'll use the non-mainstream product without a second thought that it will look unusual to others.
"but eventually they developed into a sub-culture that is just as conformist within itself as any other sub-culture." Are you implying dogs are humans because they (dogs) are equal to each other (dog)? Because this is what your argument sounds like, yes they are similar, but to other few hipsters that exist not to mainstream people.
Exactly. They have to find each other some way right? If there was only one hipster then he/she would get bored and have to find another group to "fit in" with.
@@mikereiss4216 They see themselves as different from the majority of population. But before you think about it, I am not defending hipsters, discovering underground bands is really easy at internet era, feeling special because you discovered underground bands at the internet era is equivalent of some adult that have both hands feeling special because he can write his own name.
Plaid shirts, horn rimed glasses , love for local coffe shops, obscure bands, and still listening to cassette and cds . Oh my god I am a hipster. Why did no one tell me
I'm lazy, cheap and don't give a rats. I wear a beard and messy hair which I trim down every month with clippers. I buy clothing in bulk, once a year. I hate both sides of politics. I enjoy irony and sarcasm. If I ever bother to make something I want it to be a masterpiece. I don't bother learning anything toward improving my skills for this purpose so this is unlikely. I hate hipsters, but doesn't everyone? My mum is an artsy hippy and my dad is a small business owner who hates union bosses. I'm just a gen X.
lol shut up hipster. you all dress exactly alike while demanding you're an individual. you're all literally identical and claim that looking like other people is too "mainstream" if irony were poisonous you would all have choked on your own spit by now.
I remember Tim Heidecker saying something along the lines that hipsters have appropriated so many different parts of culture that nobody can actually really be themselves without feeling that they might be indulging in some sort of ironic ploy. Like when I heard the skinny jeans and plaid I just saw Wella skater punks have been doing this for years.. So? LOL
I went to an art school where everyone tried so hard to be a hipster, and yet those same people were obsessed with pop music and MTV shows. It drove me insane. I got to the point where anytime anyone expressed something sarcastically, or tried to impose their opinion about how something completely absurd was actually "better" I would immediately call them out and demand that the present their sources to me. Furthermore, I went to a hipster party and put on Aphex Twin and not a single person in the room recognized it. "Hipster" is slang for "White Suburban Kid that thinks they can hide their plain origins with stupidity they mistake for creativity"
One punch man Looks like johnny sins that episode was boring for me and also I hated evil jack.. Even the yamakandis (not sure of spelling) episode was dope.. But my personal favourite was the episode where jack was shown only for the last few minutes...*the group of assassins trying to make a plan to kill jack* episode :P
Rage Against the Machine are so mainstream these days. Cameroonian metal used to be cool, but I think Philipino bubblegum trap artists who only rap in Tagalog are so much more authentic.
Hey hey hey, no making fun of plaid shirts. Up here in the northeast EVERYONE wears them. It’s a universal symbol pertaining to our long culture with the backcountry. Plus, it’s wicked cold and they always seem to do the trick
Wrong actually. Hipsterism is a middle class culture and many thrive on working class cultures for example how Brooklyn is considered hipster but 20 years ago was mainly working class. The same with Brixton in London and Stoke Croft in Bristol, once working class, the hipster moved in, prices went up, gentrification happened and many people have been displaced.
people like that are a stain on society. you're not apart of the advancement of humanity you're literally apart of haling progress because you demand to be heard. I've never heard of hipsters outside of America and if they exist, they're Americans. ruining the world I live in hurts me.
+Chris Jay Becker Lmao! I don't think so, Bro. In Chicago, we have a ton of these goofy hipsters and I know a few personally and can tell you that they're broke.
+Joshua Black So maybe it's not true EVERYWHERE, but it certainly is true in Los Angeles... the cost of rent in Silverlake/Los Feliz is so high, there can't be many broke hipsters there.
It's not the fact that those bands get liked by people who like generally shit music. The big problem is they simple only like one song, Kings Of Leon - Sex is on Fire, The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army, The Black Keys - Gold On The Ceiling, Disturbed - Sound Of Silence etc It wouldn't be so bad if they actually bought the album. They treat them as if they are a guilty pleasure, yet the fact of the matter is they are talented musicians and song writers. I hate this one song culture that we live in now. it is why undiscovered talent stays hidden and buried behind screens of auto tune and beats money grabbing talent less artists . The majority of the world are too afraid to discover new music beyond what is shoved down our ears on radio stations and music charts. They may be able to sing but when they sign there creative freedom away to someone else to mold, then tell me it's not about the money?
+piramaniak Care to elaborate on what you consider a better band within the same genre? It is enough to say they are painfully average but do not say that just because you don't think they are heavy enough for you. They write and compose all their songs with some pretty deep subject matters.
I get what you're saying but if there is only a couple of songs that you like then why buy a whole album? I have 7 songs from the black keys that I really like but some of their music doesn't resonate with me as much. Same thing with the gorillaz, I have about 8 of their songs and I love listening to them but the music they play is insanely different so I only get the ones I love and that I want to listen too. (Look at "Feel good inc" and "Melancholy hill" one is a rap/hip hop and the other is a calm techno song. I love both of these songs but some of their music just doesn't resonate with me) I agree with the later half of what you said but I don't think buying a couple songs opposed to buying an album is a problem.
You can't expect from everyone to investigate in music like that. I like to listen to multiple albums a day and when I can I like to discover new artists. But that's my interest, other people have other interests, you have to respect that. That's the problem with hipsters, you aren't genuinely interested in music (or anything) at all, you just want to come across as intelligent, so that you can complain about other people for not doing the same. If you are really genuinely interested in something, then you wouldn't care if others don't take it seriously, because it's YOUR interest and not something everyone should do.
+Andeos Rigas I agree. No greater joy than introducing/ sharing the music you love to/ with someone who may not be familiar with it. And if they are, all to the better; now you've got something to talk about. But honestly, that kind of sentiment has always been around, and I associate it more with elitism than with hipsterdom itself.
In Europe, the bicycle is a means of transport. Wish this could reach the Americas, you poor, miserable, fuel-driven people. (Although living in London, I can't help but agree. This city is horrible for riding a bike and I would never dare to do it.)
I just checked online. My mom works 42.6 miles away from where we actually live. We used to live in the city, but not only was that place dangerous it was expensive too. So we bought a house in a small town. More space for less money and the area is a WHOLE lot safer. My mom keeps her job in the city, because she has seniority there, which means she is first when there is overtime (which she takes all the time) and vacation (should she want it). But yeah we're not miserable, fuel-driven people; our countries are just bigger than your's which means mandatory travel. Must be nice to have work close by
Oh cool! I didn't realize that. Makes sense though, that was around the first time I saw a CD at my friends house and I was like "ooohhh, a tiny shiny record!" LOLOL!
SandyOrbProductions, so you chose it. I surely didn't because I don't like being told what to wear, what to listen to or what to do when it comes to liking or disliking things.
alex well everything morrissey writes is so fucking melodramatic that u can’t take it seriously. Even though he probably wants to be taken seriously. All the time. Doesn’t stop me from loving it though. they’re what got me through in my darkest and most “edgy” times. (But you have to admit that morrissey is not the best role model, especially now that he’s getting older/ less relevant and more attention seeking by the day)
Same honestly. My main concern around people is not to be annoying so I could never become full on hipster. I’m just quiet and like music, films and books. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
+Wallace Moss Not even fucken close, rap/hip hop & pop are still topping the charts all around the world, with the occasional ALTERNATIVE ROCK taking number one, also Indie is a huge genre, and if we're talking about the "hipster indie" with a female lead singing about environmental issues, no... no it's not mainstream.
As a person who was born and lived in Moose Jaw for 25 years, I can tell you with great certainty that that town will never EVER be a hipster town. It's basically one large retirement villa I swear!
Richard Petzelt, I'm somebody who uses Jeris Hair Tonic, who listens to mid-20th century music, who is rebellious in modern-day culture, and who dresses up in fine 1950s styled clothing and accessories. So there is a hope for me.
Everybody can be who they want and wear what they want, it doesn't make you anything. People that put labels on other people are being judgmental. I grew up in the "preppie' era when kids wore L'acoste shirts and Sperrier boat shoes and anything is an improvement on that in my opinion.
People hate hipsters for all the wrong reasons. I challenge anyone to find a single internet comment with a hipster looking down on people for aesthetic reason (while there are endless floods of superiority-tripping comments aimed at hipsters). If they're as arrogant irl about esthetics as people claim, there's no reason why they wouldn't be even more arrogant online. I really suspect this is just a meme passed around. Where they do get genuinely arrogant is in their rigid sjw politics, where they tend to have insane double standards on which groups they're hypersensitive about ''protecting'' and which they express hatred at with passion. At least, it's people who dress and talk exactly like hipsters so..
If wanting to support small local businesses and artists, being creating and liking to make one's own things, using environmentally friendly transport, and being an intellectually minded and aware individual makes you a hipster then I'm glad to be one.
You can tell that the people that made this video are trying there best to be entertaining. if you ask me, just let people be themselves. we all have different personalities that make us unique.
Honestly, I find hipsters to be condescending douchebags who act like they know everything, and dress like they got out of a burning house and grabbed whatever they could to avoid being naked, or else dressed themselves during an Acid trip. plus, like others have pointed out, Hipsters, like any other "anti-Mainstream" movement, becomes a mainstream movement in itself. Honestly, I can give a shit less if something I do is trendy or not, i'll do it anyway, and actually enjoy something for what it is. Sure, some of these things are things I do, like collecting vintage items, sarcasm (not all the time), and checking out smaller shops (not coffeeshops), but it's not for a mainstream hate or irony, it's because I actually like the classics!
Being a war veteran I am constantly confused for a hipster, must be the face hair, the coffee, the building your own furniture, the being mad at everything and never shutting the hell up. It's actually admittedly quite funny.
Felix Juarez the DD-214 beard definitely gets confused for the hipster beard. I’m growing mine because I spent five years forced to shave or be punished. There are a lot of hipsters who are vets tho.
I don't believe in the word hipster, people just couldn't believe that others can be different and had to make this trend to make them look silly or fake. While some people probably do pretend to be a certain thing they're not to attract someone or for whatever other reason but I can tell you that most people you call "hipsters" don't do it just to look "cool" or try to be "unique" they're just people who dare to be truly themselves and don't let themselves be influenced by what society wants them to do or look like it's that simple if you can't fathom it is because you're stuck being a slave to society
I'm going to grow a beard , buy skinny jeans & flannel shirt & sit in a Starbucks quoting ." "This coffee is awesome".It's cool. Just to piss all the hipsters off 😂👌
Hmm, I live in Europe, and what I allways thought as bohemian life style is actually being hipster. Nice try to define something that already exist America, nice try. But you are late for centuries.
A hipster is someone who is so snobbish and over excited to show off about how different his taste is. If your taste is really different but you don't brag about it then you are not a hipster.
The whole rejecting mainstream thing has become a bit of a paradox. I mean if you embrace what's new and mainstream like always watching what's new at the box-office or listen to top 20 music you get called "one of those mindless millennials taking in any kind of crap being churned out these days." But if you reject the mainstream and embrace retro and indie art forms you get called a hipster. It's sort of a damned if you do and damned if you do for millennials. I think people just like to hate us, haha.
Exactly. No matter what you do someone is gonna mindlessly put you in a box. I think it's happened forever in every generation. people love to feel superior, either by bragging about all the old music they like or by shitting on other people. Luckily most of this bickering and labeling happens online
