Hipsters are great. Every couple months a retiring hipster sells their entire vinyl collection on craigslist or discogs. You can pick stuff up super cheap as they tend to be hasty about erasing their past when moving into a new identity. This has been happening for almost 15+ years now. Give me a can of folgers and jug of cream. It all tastes the same to me.

I have a lot of the traits too, but the difference is I'm in my 40s (not a Millennial) and a lot of the stuff I like is because I remember when they were new and they're often made better than modern stuff. I have a beard because I've had one for over 20 years, I look better with one and my dad had one. I hate that it's become a trend actually. I like Vinyl because it sounds slightly better, but usually I just listen to music on my computer or on my phone. I have a single speed bike (difference to a Fixed gear is it has a freewheel) because I like bikes, I have about 7 bikes and it's just one of them. I use Fuji camera (they look a bit retro, but I use them because they give good colour and are fun to use). I used to be a pro photographer and i don't want heavy cameras anymore. Wear wayfarer glasses because I like Raybans, they're timeless and I NEED THEM TO SEE. I'm not really sarcastic, facetious maybe. Sarcasm is just being mean. Can't stand skinny jeans, I got into boxers and very loose pants when I used to skate in the early 90s and never got into the tight jean/pants thing. My T-Shirts aren't ironic I just like old things people find ironic now. I shop at OpShops (Thrift Stores) because you can get cheap clothes etc. there. I don't like paying full price for stuff. I love second hand things. Especially bikes. So I'm not a hipster, I'm just old.
Yep, real men have beards no longer than what grows out over a couple of weeks because they are too lazy to shave. I haven't shaved in nearly 40 years -- I just periodically *mow* my head... If I go more than 3 weeks between mowing (like when I'm out of the country for extended periods of time), I find it very irritating.

While I'm a bit old to fall for the "hipster" trap, when I was younger, I had the same attitude about music. I got over it pretty quickly when I realized that more people knowing about band I like is actually a good thing. The more people that hear you and hear about you, the better your chances of success and the longer your career will be. I'm sure I could come up with a dozen bands that I loved and were amazing but broke up after their first or second album. They don't break up because they suck or because the band members hate each other. They break up because it's expensive to be in a band and if they're not making money then they're wasting their time. Now, when I find an amazing musical act, I try to tell as many people as possible just so those acts can continue to make music for ME. It's completely selfish but in a good way.

I hate how people assume that, if you enjoy history, literature, older films, fashions from other eras, etc, that must mean you're a pretentious hipster. No, it doesn't. Enjoying the classics wasn't always fashionable. People used to get called "nerds" and "geeks" and were seen as weird for liking things like that. I know I was as a kid.

Collecting records doesn't make you a hipster, allot of music never got transferred from 78rpm to 33rpm and even more never from 33 to digital. It is hard to get a digital release of a record never released to digital. Even the quadraphonic records of famous bands like jethro tull, pink floyd, black sabbath, bachman turner overdrive, 3 out of the 4 Beatles, never got re-released as there wasn't any medium to re-release them too, and these were mixes made when the bands were alive and in control of their music. I read John Lennon actually pushed the sound engineer out of the way to personally mix one of his quad records himself. I'm not saying records sound better, I'm saying for some albums, like half of Johnny Maddox's discography, they are the only available option. Also the concept that a sound file, something I associate as being inherently digital, can be recorded without electricity to a non electromagnetic storage medium and played back on another machine that doesn't use electricity is simply amazing. No other type of information is as limited in its methods of preservation and there is to my knowledge only one way to store this information without electricity involved. From an engineering and archival perspective it is fascinating. For example they were able to 3d scan the 100+ year old Thomas Edison voice records to play them despite no proper playback machine in the world still existing and the glass records were shattered, CD's on the other hand are expected to have a relatively short lifespan before the plastic clouds rendering them unusable. Not to mention modern turntable design is more complicated then a car, every single solution creates 3 problems and you have to consider material resonance frequencies, linear velocity, angular velocity, torque, centrifugal force compensation on a pivoting lever(antiskate), vibration isolation, momentum and some complicated geometry, and that's before you get to the capacitance of the cabling or the electronic potential of the shells and of course the basic electronics of which the choices in types of components and circuit controls also create and solve problems. About half of physics is there. It is amazing just how complicated such a simple design is when done right, and every single design whether $10,000 or $20 can only ever be a series of trade offs.
Nothing wrong with wearing glasses. I've worn them for 49 of my years of life- since 1st grade. The problem is the plastic horn rims that were the style back in the 1950's and 60's. I had no choice but to wear them when I was a small kid and I hated seeing my mother wearing the cat's eye style of horn rimmed glasses as I grew up. I finally was able to ditch them and start wearing metal/wire rimmed glasses in my teens. When I joined the Army I was issued a pair of plastic horn rimmed safety glasses with non-reflective lens. They were commonly referred to as "BC's", or birth control glasses, because you'd never get laid if you wore them. Though the styles have improved a bit I still have a strong prejudice against them (plastic horn rims, that is. NOT glasses in general). I put my glasses on the first thing in the morning as I need them to see. But if I had to go back to wearing plastic horn rim BC's, then I think I'd rather spend the remainder of my life in a permanent squint. If anyone ever sees someone wearing just rims with no glasses or with regular glass (non-Rx) so they can look cool, tell them if they use a walker they'll be the hit of any party and the opposite sex will be slobbering at their feet !

not really. theres some crossover, but not much. hippies actually had a reason for their culture, anti war and violence. if the vietnam war never happened, there would never have been hippies. hipsters are just anti mainstream and want to be post modern and ironic. theres no political movement linked to it.
There is a certain amount of overlap between hipsters and hippies (organic food, anti-mainstream), but they are two different groups. Hippies don't enjoy things ironically the way hipsters do and don't have the stylish appearance hipsters go for. Also, dreadlocks and yoga are a hippie thing, not a hipster thing.

Hipsters developed from non-conformity, but eventually they developed into a sub-culture that is just as conformist within itself as any other sub-culture. A true non-conformist willingly conforms to people around him when it seems practical (without seeking approval), and doesn't conform when it isn't practical (ignoring any potential disapproval). If a mainstream product appears to be just as functional as a non-mainstream version, he will go ahead and use it. But if the non-mainstream has better function, has better use/cost value, he'll use the non-mainstream product without a second thought that it will look unusual to others.

I enjoy irony and sarcasm. If I ever bother to make something I want it to be a masterpiece. I don't bother learning anything toward improving my skills for this purpose so this is unlikely. I went to an art school where everyone tried so hard to be a hipster, and yet those same people were obsessed with pop music and MTV shows. It drove me insane. I got to the point where anytime anyone expressed something sarcastically, or tried to impose their opinion about how something completely absurd was actually "better" I would immediately call them out and demand that the present their sources to me. Furthermore, I went to a hipster party and put on Aphex Twin and not a single person in the room recognized it. Wrong actually. Hipsterism is a middle class culture and many thrive on working class cultures for example how Brooklyn is considered hipster but 20 years ago was mainly working class. The same with Brixton in London and Stoke Croft in Bristol, once working class, the hipster moved in, prices went up, gentrification happened and many people have been displaced.

It's not the fact that those bands get liked by people who like generally shit music. The big problem is they simple only like one song, Kings Of Leon - Sex is on Fire, The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army, The Black Keys - Gold On The Ceiling, Disturbed - Sound Of Silence etc It wouldn't be so bad if they actually bought the album. They treat them as if they are a guilty pleasure, yet the fact of the matter is they are talented musicians and song writers. I hate this one song culture that we live in now. it is why undiscovered talent stays hidden and buried behind screens of auto tune and beats money grabbing talent less artists . The majority of the world are too afraid to discover new music beyond what is shoved down our ears on radio stations and music charts. They may be able to sing but when they sign there creative freedom away to someone else to mold, then tell me it's not about the money?

I get what you're saying but if there is only a couple of songs that you like then why buy a whole album? I have 7 songs from the black keys that I really like but some of their music doesn't resonate with me as much. Same thing with the gorillaz, I have about 8 of their songs and I love listening to them but the music they play is insanely different so I only get the ones I love and that I want to listen too. (Look at "Feel good inc" and "Melancholy hill" one is a rap/hip hop and the other is a calm techno song. I love both of these songs but some of their music just doesn't resonate with me) I agree with the later half of what you said but I don't think buying a couple songs opposed to buying an album is a problem.
You can't expect from everyone to investigate in music like that. I like to listen to multiple albums a day and when I can I like to discover new artists. But that's my interest, other people have other interests, you have to respect that. That's the problem with hipsters, you aren't genuinely interested in music (or anything) at all, you just want to come across as intelligent, so that you can complain about other people for not doing the same. If you are really genuinely interested in something, then you wouldn't care if others don't take it seriously, because it's YOUR interest and not something everyone should do.

I just checked online. My mom works 42.6 miles away from where we actually live. We used to live in the city, but not only was that place dangerous it was expensive too. So we bought a house in a small town. More space for less money and the area is a WHOLE lot safer. My mom keeps her job in the city, because she has seniority there, which means she is first when there is overtime (which she takes all the time) and vacation (should she want it). But yeah we're not miserable, fuel-driven people; our countries are just bigger than your's which means mandatory travel. Must be nice to have work close by

Everybody can be who they want and wear what they want, it doesn't make you anything. People that put labels on other people are being judgmental. I grew up in the "preppie' era when kids wore L'acoste shirts and Sperrier boat shoes and anything is an improvement on that in my opinion.

Honestly, I find hipsters to be condescending douchebags who act like they know everything, and dress like they got out of a burning house and grabbed whatever they could to avoid being naked, or else dressed themselves during an Acid trip. plus, like others have pointed out, Hipsters, like any other "anti-Mainstream" movement, becomes a mainstream movement in itself. Honestly, I can give a shit less if something I do is trendy or not, i'll do it anyway, and actually enjoy something for what it is. Sure, some of these things are things I do, like collecting vintage items, sarcasm (not all the time), and checking out smaller shops (not coffeeshops), but it's not for a mainstream hate or irony, it's because I actually like the classics!
