Hi Paul, I’m Mexico Relocation’s Guide here in Playa Del Carmen. Mariana’s services and guide are top notch. Over the past year we have done a few video interviews and live streams touching on many of the points you covered. Coupled with your excellent videos and her detailed approach to getting “boots on the ground” info about what life in Mexico is really like it’s a win win combination! This is singularly the most challenging concern that keeps us from taking the plunge…Areas of concern: police corruption, abduction, cartel violence, etc.. I've been in Mexico since 1989 on a part time basis, and since 2009 on a full time basis. I can vouch: your information is absolutely correct on everything. Car related; I drove my 27yr old Honda American plated car from California to my condo in Cabo, Mexico (what an experience!) Next step, I will be getting South Dakota license plates. According to one of your videos, Americans drive these plated cars in Mexico, without a problem. And of course I will be applying for Mexican residency. I’m keeping my small 1 br condo just for vacation purposes (love it!) And I will be keeping my Mexican property manager, Maria, just to get things done for me. Question below regarding "safety" and this doesn't just apply to Mexico. 20 years ago we had an acquaintance who moved to San Jose' Del Cabo after retiring (we had been going there for years to fish). Anyway, Herb met a Mexican national, got married and purchased a home and we (his fishing buddies who hadn't retired yet) visited and enjoyed seeing Herb and his new wife enjoying themselves. Flash forward a few years and things got a little sketchy when Herb's wife's extended family moved in. Herb dealt with it the best he could for a couple of years, until a few years ago when we visited and Herb was no longer anywhere to be found. His wife of 6 years said he just "up and left". We contacted the local police (if Herb would have reached that point, he would have contacted one of us), but they simply shrugged their shoulders and said "we will keep an eye out". Sadly, we never knew what happened to Herb. His wife and family now refuse to speak with any of us.

One main reason to move to Mexico as a permanent resident would be to avoid having to pay the high taxes in Canada. The issue with transferring money from a Canadian to a Mexican bank would be a red flag for Revenue Canada. The CRA would deem you to still be a resident and therefore be liable to pay taxes. One option might be to move your money to a Caribbean country with favourable banking laws (Turks & Caicos) and then transfer money as needed and check the rates as stated.

I PAID 1-800-Got Junk to empty my 2 bedrooms apartment, closets and all. It was a Swedish Death Cleansing, and they did an excellent job. I did not have junk, and I had lived there almost 24 years. I always packed up things I was not using in RubberMaid containers, gave the RM numbers, and packed like with like. Books, tapes, journals, pictures, and furniture. I seperatd things within the RM with Ziplock bags of all sizes, and I used index cards to write, what was inside, RM#, and location in the apartment, all covered with Mexican serapes, and books on display on top. I still have the index cards, ad what I was taking to Queretaro was in my bathtub, as they emptied the entire apartment. Later, I gave away all my food preps, bathroom, and kitchen items. I have been coming to Mexico over 60 years, mainly Acapulco, and I speak Spanish as a second language. Earthquakes were the deal breakers for Acapulco. USA got too deadly and expensive, so at 79, I moved to Queretaro, Mexico. I have a beautiful apartment, that is 100% furnished, all utilities , WiFi, and a maid is included in a gated community with 24/7 security. The people are super nice, and it is about $800 per month for everything, including groceries home delivery, takeout, laundry, tours etc vs $1650 per month in the USA. If you are on a pension, or can work online, get your passport, 2 Charles Schwab debit cards, so you do not pay ATM or foreign transaction fees, but notify them when and where you travel. Queretaro is SAFE, CLEAN, and BEAUTIFUL, and I thank God for moving me here. R.I.P. Everyone being killed everywhere, for the souls leave the bodies, and God is in charge. ALL LIVES MATTER! Please behave, and obey God.

YES!... I agree with all the positive comments. Glad to have finally found "the real deal" source of information. And you do it so well. I was disappointed yet glad when hearing about the car import scenario. I DO want to travel into Mexico with my car (nine years old haha) because I'd like to travel the country leisurely in order to find my spot. There are SO many places that attract me. But now I'm faced with the conundrum of having to go for the temporary residency, when I would really prefer to go for the permanent one right away. Coming with my car would also allow me to load up my car (Subaru Impreza 2013 hatchback, less than 40K miles) with my belongings which seems so much easier than shipping suitcases, but perhaps it's not?... Any and all feedback would be so very greatly appreciated. Your videos ROCK! Muchos Gracias!

Re: Buying a car in Mexico. I'm not in a position to know if regulations have changed but when we started living in Mexico in 2010, it was possible to be a temporary resident for 5 years before converting to permanent residency. In fact, I think that was the only option then. Anyway, during this these 5 years we were permitted to kept our US-plated car and only had to pay a small tax each year which we could doeasily in a nearby town. When we converted to permanent residency though, we had to take the car out of the country (and we bought a Mexican plated car). Also, there is another option at least in some parts of the country. In the state of Guanajuato, where we live, it's possible to keep a US-plated car indefinitely, even after permanent residency, if you use what they call UCD plates (not sure what that stands for). UCD plates on a US car are, I think, more restrictive than Mexican plates on a Mexican car would be but many around us seem to get by just fine this way. Again, I don't know all the current regulations and would listen to Qruu if he chimes in on this. But, I'd hate to come down here and make the commitment to buying a Mexican car right away before I tried living here if I could avoid it.

this was an excellent presentation. full of info lacking in other videos. more details for sure. i just recently learned the sad news about driving your own car to your mexican destination. sadly, i just bought a "new" used car just to tow a trailer when i move. so, i guess i won't be going to mexico any time soon. i've only owned my car for a month now. just paid 500 bucks for the hitch 2 days ago. i'd lose way too much money to sell it now. maybe next year. in the meantime, i gotta now find an affordable place to live here in the states! and that's becoming nearly impossible. no matter what GOOD things i hear about anything, they never seem to apply to me. there's always a catch - or 20! no matter what i try to do to better my life, there's always something put in place to stop me!

Great info 👍. The only thing I would disagree with is #5. If you will be going for temporary residency(4 years) like me do not sell your vehicle. Take advantage of that 4 years to save money for a new mexican one. After you qualify for perm residency, then sell your paid off vehicle in the U.S. and then buy new mexican vehicle. This will be my plan since my vehicle is still low mileage and it would not make financial sense to buy new if I dont have to as a temporary resident.

You make a valid point. That ceratinly sounds like a good option for your situation. The vehicle advice is very general and depends on so many different factors unique to the person.

Mexico is a let's make a deal place. Since we are gringos expect to be high-balled a lot. So low ball and then work up. Always live next to a boarder, preferably SD in case you want to work in the US. Get a fast track pass or walk across. Most importantly, gringos are sold by at least 25 -50% more so always haggle down. If you're at a regular store type place, then the price is what it says in pesos. Obviously the dollar is ok.

Coming South in the next couple weeks…breaking at least 3 of your top 10 tips. Oh well, you can use us as an example if it doesn’t work out. See you at Lol-Ha next time you guys are around.

They are just general tips anyway. Have a safe trip and we hope to see you at Lol-Ha. We will probably be back in that area around May.

Mexican relocation guide. My father bought me membership to the Mexico relocation guide as a gift. I will move to Mexico probably next month (July). I have sent them 2 emails. They haven't replied to either email. I do notice they take the time to respond to RU-vid in the comments section. They do have a lot of useful information compiled on one website about Mexico though.

Thanks for watching, Jeff. No, we haven't found that perfect place yet. I saw a few places that I liked but I didn't like the price. :)

Great tips! Especially the money, if you can time it right, save so much! Going to have to look into the MEdicare Advantage use in Mexico?
