Nice set of tips. My first day as an FY1 was one of the scariest days of my life! The thing to remember is not matter how alone you might sometimes feel, there is a whole team around you so use each other for support. Medicine is a team sport.

I have a few questions ( about to start f1 next month, yikes) -I noticed you were wearing a wedding ring & engagement ring, are you allowed to have that on the ward? -What rotation did you enjoy most in F1? and why? -I know you mentioned studying fluids prior to starting F1 but have you heard of the oxford handbook for foundation programme book? any good? saw it as a recommendation on student room. Right I’m not too sure how it all works but when you’re doing all of the different types of training to specialise in a certain field, so like if I was training to go into cardiology, would I be working at the same time as doing all of this training? If so, then is it full time or not, and what’s the pay like just roughly? Thank you :)

For international medical graduate finding a FY 1 job in UK is difficult or not?
@ShazWag
@ShazWag 5 лет назад
My daughter's feeling a bit stressed about her FY1 options (i.e. which regions to choose). She's single and wants to be in place where she can meet young people and socialise sometimes and also somewhere that's not hugely expensive to live. She's inclined towards plastics given that so far she's found this to be a little more interesting (e.g. being creative in reconstruction after accidents), as many specialties involve the same procedures and many surgeons have specialties are specific. What are your recommendations? She's a Glasgow medical school and, although she really likes Scotland, would like a change. Thanks a lot. I find your videos very helpful and informative. All the best for FY2, which will also fly by. What are your future intentions? Would you like to specialise or become a G.P?
@DrEzgiOzcan
@DrEzgiOzcan 5 лет назад
Hi Shaz! Thank you very much for your comment In terms of social life the larger cities are better for activities and meeting other people, but that also means higher rent and living costs. It really depends on which is the best for her. She wouldn’t necessarily need to do a plastics job to get into the training in the future (so I wouldn’t use that as a must have when she’s choosing her choices) Scotland is usually a good choice. Particularly Edinburgh I’ve heard. Or if she wants a complete change then Brighton, Kent etc are also great choices. Worse comes worse if she’s hugely against her placement she can always ask to be changed once the final allocations are made Hope that helps! x

@@fasogeeek In reply to your question, in case you haven't seen the Q&A page. I am a plastic surgery fellow in London, the equivalent of an SHO staff grade. (I have been a doctor for 5 years) Written examinations are not compulsory in Foundation training however they are encouraged to allow progression of training and to get them out of the way so that future training isn't slowed down. These can include the first parts of membership exams, such as the MRCS (Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons), MRCP (Royal College of Physicians) etc. The first parts of these exams can be done in F1 or F2 to get them out of the way but often they are done in F2 or the year after F2. The only compulsory exam as an F1/F2 is the yearly progression assessment where a panel assesses how well the doctor is doing to make sure that they are suitable to move onto the next level. Junior doctors are treated variably and it may feel as though F1s/F2s are being dumped with all the boring jobs such as discharge summaries, writing up drug charts, doing VTE assessments and other administrative jobs. However these jobs are incredibly important and without F1s then the system wouldn't work very well. I have worked for some incredible bosses who are caring, fair and honest. It is very rare nowadays to come across consultants who are unpleasant because the current system in theory shouldn't allow it. However there are still a few out there that can be a bit nasty to work for and they are protected by their reputation of excellence in their chosen field. I have certainly come across a few but for the most part if you are honest, work hard and communicate well, you shouldn't run into difficulty.

Hi Yes they’re paid jobs, just not in a training programme. I’m not sure of the exact pay but it’ll be on the NHS website. As long as you meet the requirements, being a foreign doctor doesn’t effect your chances of getting into the training programme
