So one of the devs of TR1 saw my video and here are corrections: -Lara didn't have a middle name yet -Only her Last name came from a phonebook -Her Mansion isn't designed after the building the game was developed in -The idea to select two characters was never actually implemented, just requested -Sony US did reject the game, but mainly because it didn't have enough documentation
And this about Deathtrap Dungeon "Though the game's 3D engine is very similar to that of Tomb Raider, another Eidos-published game with a development cycle which overlapped that of Deathtrap Dungeon, the two games were developed in isolation."
If they've used phone book from 2:16, Since this is polish phone book, she would rather named Lara Nowak or Lara Kowalska ;) (female form of Kowalski last name). Nowak and Kowalski are most popular names in Poland, equiwalent to "Smith" and "Jones" in the UK. By the way, in 1976 polish voyager Tony Halik along with Elżbieta Dzikowska and prof. Edmundo Guillén has rediscovered Vilcabamba :) So another polish accent ;)
@@JetpacksWasYes2 I'm just saying it's a similar game to the ones he listed. They're each games that are highly enjoyable. Don't be "that guy", because I didn't disagree with his list at all, I praise his selection of favorite games.
AoD had so much potential and the story was awesome. It's a shame that eidos rushed the small team of Core so hard they had to present their work unfinished and got kicked as thanks for that. I still liked AoD even with bugs and glitches.
Angel of Darkness should have been a point n click adventure. Just saying. Something like Broken Sword 3 marketed deliberately as a Tomb Raider spinoff could have been pretty good.
@@Le_Pete I tried it the other day with a mod to fix some of the controls and stuff, it still played like absolute dog shit, i don't want to remember how it played originally if it was that bad with the mod
Tomb Raider was the first major video game series I got into as a kid. To this day, I still cite Lara as one of my role models for creating my own definition for femininity, especially concerning the desire to investigate and question the world so as not to repeat the mistakes of history. Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation is on my "favorite games of all time" list.
@@nicoredje arguably she didnt even have a personality in the first few. The new prequel trilogy shows the events that turned her into a stone cold killer (when she saw jonah "die" etc). They are really enjoyable for the puzzles and environment too, absolutely stunning sometimes.
@@JD_13 classic lara had personality. Why do people like you think the only way a character can be interesting is having them goe through a bunch of overdramatic trauma? The reboots are generic modern triple-A cliches action games. If you've played other games like uncharted or last of us, you're not missing anything new with the reboots. Nothing unique.
So much nostalgia... I was so in love with her when I was a kid. Still now, she is a piece of my earth. Tomb raider II was my very first game on PS1. I completed that so many times. :) I'm dying of nostalgia...
Here is some more trivia for Lara. Note: This comes from "The Official Lara Croft Collector's Magazine" and they claim it's all legit. Favorite Movie: Deliverance Favorite Bands: U2 and NIN Favorite Food: Beans on Toast Greatest Fear: Her Auntie's Corgi Favorite Mode of Transport: Norton Streetfighter Bike
@@rompevuevitos222 OMG I thought British people who travel eat... well, anything else... I mean, even a scorpion from Egypt, or... grass... would be more delicious.
As a Tomb Raider nerd, I am so glad you put this out. An extra piece of trivia for everyone; Lara’s father’s name in TOMB RAIDER - TOMB RAIDER: Angel of Darkness is Henshingley Croft and her mother is unnamed, only called Lady Croft. Maybe they edited her parents’ fates from Legend onwards because it would give her a drive??? I can’t say for sure, though.
If I may, it's Henshingly, but I'm really happy someone knows about his name at all :D And about the lack of her mother's name. Though to be fair, they really weren't important in the classics (only appeared once in a cutscene), so of course most people wouldn't know.
Potkanka Didn’t they only appear in TOMB RAIDER Chronicles during Lara’s burial? Because they were never mentioned at all for a few games. TR was one of my first games that I ever played, I actually think it was the first. Which is why I became a TR nerd 😛
@@IconiqueBloomie Yup, they are standing there under the umbrella during the memorial service. They aren't actually ever *mentioned* in the games, just in game manuals and stuff - it's said there they disowned her because of her adventurous lifestyle. Ah cool! TR was my first 3D game, I was absolutely blown away! (TR3 to be precise.)
Potkanka Yeah, they wanted her to live an aristocratic lifestyle, iirc? Lara said aha no, bye, I want adventure and her parents disowned her and I’m like fuck yes, sis, be an adventurous bitch. 😤 When I read that, I was like, yes I idolize you so much I would love to be like you, Lara (my very young self, about 7, said) like, she was so iconic???? She still is but like, classic Lara just so much more badass imo. At least her parents felt some remorse for her death- ahem -I mean, “death.”
Fun little fact, in the first game, theres a large med kit that can be seen in one of the later levels that can only be gotten through the corner jump glitch. While it can be seen easily, the pillar its on is secluded and too tall to be reached normally.
Also, I think you should have mentioned that the Greece level includes shrines to a few mythological figures, but incorrectly includes Neptune, the Roman name for Poseidon, and Thor, who is from Norse mythology, not Greek. The remake corrected these by changing Neptune to Poseidon and replacing Thor with Hephaestus
Except Hephaestus is also wrong: while the hammer could fit a blacksmith like he is, the main focus of the Thor room was the electric Disco Ball of Doom followed by the hammer so a more accurate god for the remake would have been Zeus. If they wanted Hephaestus, the room would need to be fire and/or lava focused instead of electric while keeping the hammer. Poseidon is 100% right though.
Damocles is also a Roman legend, not Greek, written by Cicero and story itself happens in Sicily. Then again, there's Colosseum level soon after and Greece did not have those, or gladiator fights, period. Amphitheater existed, and stadiums but bloodsports with fighting lions et al was from Rome. So TR1 Greece chapter, for me, is just a mix of various European mythologies, with mostly Greco-Roman flair.
Actually grew up playing The Tomb Raider franchise and I absolutely love it I started playing TR1 on believe it or not on the SEGA 🪐 Saturn favorite counsel actually loved it
I love the Saturn one too, despite mainly playing and growing up with the PC versions. I especially love the rippling water on Saturn even before TR3, though I only have the original unfinished PAL version instead of the complete international Saturn release. I can’t find the latter either though I do want it. The Dreamcast TR4 & TR5 as well as the original Xbox & PSP versions of Legend are cool too. PSP TRA less so however as it’s even buggier than the PC version with a lot more copy & pasted bland hallways. It does have cool exclusive outfits though like Antarctica from TR3 & Rise of the Tomb Raider, and the Camo Shorts from AOD inside the Strahov.
I don't know what the Tomb Raider theme music has that is so relaxing and takes me back in time, I never get tired of listening to it, I'm glad I was part of that story. One of my favorite games.
Loved this video, tomb raider was my childhood! That and resident evil (which I was too young to play!) I remember my friends wanted to be the spice girls, I wanted to be Lara!
Ah finally!! XD I love it! I saw Seat advertisements when I was kid (I am french), I thought it was a new game! XD A little sequel exist for the "surfers scene"... You could see the car.. which swinging ... Lara looked busy! but it was removed because Core Design never agreed to an obscene scene.
I always wondered if that little joke was really "offical"... By the way, whoever made this video might be confused by the fact that those car models bear the name of Spanish locations, they say "Barcelona located" in the narration, but those ads were only seen in France, and never in Spain (sadly)... I got to watch some of them thanks to the French "Imagina" CGI festival, which was covered every year in a special tv show on "Canal+"
ShadowMan had a few Tomb Raider developers working on the game's platforming. In a way ShadowMan was a step forward on what the original developers learnt from making Tomb Raider
Æon Flux was an animated show, not a comic book, although I wouldn't be surprised if there were a few tie-in comics. Interestingly, Æon herself was originally a parody of action heroes. In the original pilot short, she guns down hundreds of enemy guards while her heroic music plays, but then the scene shifts and shows several guards bleeding out and dying while trying to help each other survive, even having some of them remove their masks to remind the viewer that they are human as well
Watching my dad play Tomb Raider and Resident Evil back in the 90's are very fond memories of mine. I watched him play them all as they came out. Oh, almost forgot to add the PS1 ports of Alone In The Dark.
I always thought the stamps in her passport were doodles of jellyfish. Also, her UK passport having the wrong color compared to TR2 & TR3 was harsher in hindsight regarding the past few years.
I always thought the Tomb Raider Theme sounded very similar to Broken Sword (I don't remember which part actually but there is a very similar Violin or Oboe melody at certain places)... both very beautiful
Remember watching my dad play the original tomb raider when I was little, now I’m playing the newer games whilst still having a love for the originals 😁
I remember pestering my dad for how to climb on a platform at waist level, i was clearly too young to enjoy the game, but recently i gave the series another go and it was a blast
Tomb Raider 1 and 2 were so cerebral to experience. The environment exploration, dangers at every turn, the music, puzzles and cut scenes made for unuique immersion. PS- 10:09 BOAT MODELLED FROM JAWS
Regarding Tomb Raider knockoffs, there was also Heretic 2 (not to be confused with Hexen and its sequel). The biggest one I know of however is Prince of Persia 3D in 1999. Imagine Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation with swords & a bow, a ton of bugs and Lara handling like a fat man. It’s fitting, as the LAU games copied Prince of Persia right back with the Sands of Time trilogy. The first 5 classic games can also be thought of as a 3D Prince of Persia 1+2 crossed with Core’s Rick Dangerous. EDIT: I forgot this one, by Toby Gard himself no less: Galleon for original Xbox. It’s Tomb Raider with pirates! Booty…er, chest…er, ship raider if you will.
"no one could recreate the magic of tomb raider" One could. The very inspiration to Tomb Raider. Prince of persia. But unfortunely it lost momentum after sands of time.
True, but all four sands of time games were great. The momentum loss happened rather literally with the 2008 reboot though it wasn’t a bad game by a long shot. That was technically the case with Forgotten Sands too but I only saw that after I played the Sands of Time trilogy which was after I beat Forgotten Sands.
Excellent video, the old Tomb Raiders don't get much attention... Weird how Lara was pretty much my childhood hero, yet my opinion might have changed if I'd seen the adverts or known about the deliberate emphasis on sexuality during development. To me, she was what I always wanted to grow up be - intelligent, cultured, independent and strong. Sorry to let you down, Lara.
Toby and Jason, during developer commentaries for Tomb Raider: Anniversary, have a laugh about the Ark of the Covenant being in Lara's house by the front door and how the studio was fortunate that LucasArts either failed to notice or didn't care.
More Tomb Raider clones on PS1: Duke Nukem: Time to Kill. Duke 3D was a Doom clone, next one was him copying Lara down to changing outfits for each ancient time period he visits with almost the same controls but a HUGE array of weapons. Also, Fighting Force 2. For some bizarre reason, the sequel to a beatemup, 3D version of Streets of Rage, made you play as one character and focused more on exploration with tank controls... And of course, Soul Reaver, which is too good of a game to be labeled a clone, but it has A LOT of similar mechanics. Probably the only other successful franchise in that style similar to TR.
Doubt you'll see this now but Little fact the studio was in Derby (pronounced darby) in England and they named a street in derby after her possibly a road but yeah
Good video ink ribbon:) (its Anteater92006 from twitter btw) once again most of them are not easter eggs but it's your series so you name it whatever you want XD
Oh my stars in the part where you mentioned Lara Croft rip-off's you just helped me find a game i remember watching my mum play back in the 90's, i never knew the name of this game (it's Death-Trap Dungeon) i just remembered the character's appearance. Seriously thanks dude this has been bugging me since the 90's.
I don't know about the other games you mentioned, but I don't see how Shadowman is a copy of Tomb Raider. Very different themes and mechanics, I would say. Having said that, I enjoy your videos, keep up the geeky job! Cheers
Not sure if most of these are easter eggs, but I really appreciate you didn't call it something like "10 things you didn't know about TR". Btw her middle name being Amelia is very recent a retcon that I imagine lots of people don't accept (me included). A nicely made vid though! I even read that some of those things are correct :D (Haha well I knew lots of these things, but I wonder about those I've never heard of before.)
Very interesting video! But, Virtua Fighter was not the first 3D fighting game. There are probably more, but at least there was 4D Boxing for the Mac in 1991.
It's surprising that the graphics were actually inspired by Virtua Fighter. And we really do need the arcade version of VF1 as downloadable content on PlayStation Network because that game taught us alot, plus we wouldn't have f***in' Tekken if it weren't for the original Virtua Fighter, which is why we need the arcade ver. so bad. Please Sega, WE BEG OF YOU!!🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
I actually enjoyed shadowman. I know of another Tomb Raider copy spawn for the PlayStation 1 that the Angry Video Game Nerd review Sally the game was not that good.
I've played this game thousands of times and I never noticed the passport easter egg. Excalibur 2555 AD was also acussed of being a Tomb Raider ripoff. Pitfall was from its own series and it has a different style and feel. Hard to believe that Sony was not interested in Tomb Raider. They promoted mainly 3D games.
