I am not sure how I missed this video. :o I think the best trans RPG, if it counts, is Kenshi. You are a nobody plunked in an open world with no story nor defined quests, just loads of lore to discover as you level up meet random characters to join you and make your story as you go along. What I dislike most about modern RPGs is they define the story, and the quests. You often point out a dislike of modern concepts in a game, but those are really just one symptom of this over writing a story to shoehorn the player in. In an RPG, and the old ones especially, the player was left to fill in the story, make their own goals. If I want a good story handed to me I would read a book, RPGs are for creating my own stories, by how I react to the world I am given. Kenshi does this in a very open, sand box world, where the game does not care what you do. It is a mix of RPG, with light RTS, and survival mechanics, but I play it as an RPG and often get really invested in my character and party, because every relationship, and every "quest" we do is just what I chose to do and how I reacted to the world and what happened. I would love to see a more D&D styled RPG that did this, just give me a world to explore, books of history, ruins to explore and slowly piece together. Probably the closest thing to this is Low Magic Age, but it is still in EA and make have more story added later, it is also missing a lot of features, they are even totally reworking how the main game works currently, so I'll really need to see what that ends up being to fully judge it.
I don't think Kenshi has an identity crisis. It's quite clearly a sandbox RPG. and it's one of the top referrers of the sub-genre. There are mane others that do that to varying degrees: Mount & Blade, WarTales, Star Traders: Frontiers, Vagrus (the sandbox mode), Sands of Salzaar (tho this one I don't like) Battle Brothers, etc.
Well. That is a really good question. I truly don't know. But after 2016 we started getting stuff like Ghost Busters 2016, Terminator Dark Fate, Captain Maevel, Velma, She-Hullk, the new Star Wars trilogy, Baldur's Gate Siege of Dragonspear, Pathfinder Kingmaker. The Last of Us Part II, Obi Wan, Halo, the Book of Bobba Fett, Disney remakes, The Lord of the Rings, Rings of Power and courntless other writing disasters thar have the exact same problem.

10:10 The funny thing is that if anything it's the other way around. Visual Novels often have more choices and more impactful choices because of their limited assets I mean look at those screens, their just backgrounds with character art and text. You can have a lot of variety with that, that's too costly with graphics
Perhaps, but it feels like they wanted to add more mechanics and interactivity but couldn't because of the format. As for the linear story, you are right, but they really should've made player choice waaaay more impactful.
@@YeOldEntertainment Again there have been visual novels that added RPG elements/attributes, I think they just didn't think/want to go in that direction because there are Visual Novels that do just that, some of them are even based on VTM (but not officially so they don't use licenced stuff)

It's just a way that I've come up with to refer to writing like the one we've seen recently in shows like Velma, She Hulk, Piccard Season 1 or, to a lesser extent, games like Siege of Dragonspear, and Pathfinder Kingmaker. But if you think there's nothing wrong with the writing in those products, then blessed be thee who can enjoy a broader array of the things that are coming out these days.

I mean, how many succesful GTA knockoffs are there? The only one that comes to my mind is Sleeping Dogs. Also, the og Mafia game also had pretty barren world I think? I'm no expert but games like GTA probably require resources that studio behind Mafia games just doesn't have. Anyways, I like the vid. Is Fallout 2 next in line? Btw, have you heard about the Roadwarden game? Any thoughts?
And that's why I threw in rule number... whatever the number was. I know most games on this list couldn't have been the game I would have wanted them to be: Vampire the Masquerade Coteries of New York, Batman: The Enemy Within and Mafia, yes. Fallout 2 is almost ready, yes. Roadwarden... saw splattercat doing a video, added to my "maybe I should get" playlist, haven't played it yet. Is it any good?
As for the trans genre: There is a certain class of post-Amnesia: The Dark Descent horror games, that are very light on mechanics to the point of being walking sims. Layers of Fear come first to mind, but there is ton of them. Turn them to true survival horror experiences. Even the spiritual father of this semi-genre, Frictional Games itself, has upped the survival horror mechanics in their last offering, Amnesia: the Bunker. PS: I think that Amnesia the Dark Descent is a great horror experience as it is, and a GOAT game. My problem lies with its copycats.
Big nope for the original Amnesia... not because it's bad... but because it is very good at what it does... which is scaring the living sh*t out of you. Played it for 30 minutes... got scared sh*tless, uninstalled it and never looked back... (out of fear).
@@YeOldEntertainment I remember back in early 10s youtube, this game ruled the platform. Great times. The funny thing is that during that first 30 minutes there is no enemy spawned, if i recall correctly. Also I remember the fucking piano playing in the other room during the "tutorial" part 😱👻
Points for funny clickbaity title (and thumbnail with the "babe with a gun" - didn't expect that to be from a video game) but this list is pretty random and feels more like "10 games I have strong feelings how they should be better" really... which is not as catchy admittedly :D For the batman game I feel you should direct the "blame" the other way around : Rocksteady seems to have pretty good writers and the budget to do anything, OTOH any attempt to make combat gameplay in a batman game for a studio not already familiar with the genre JUST AFTER Arkham's series release would have been suicidal and ended with bad comparison. Look at what happened to Origins (which I found almost as good as City but I'm not an action games or Batman fan so maybe I missed something)
I know. That's why I threw in the rule of "a daydreamer's list" I know there's no way Vampire the Masquerade Coteries of New York, Mafia Definitive Edition or Batman the Enemy Within could've been the game I wanted it to be. I think Rocksteady's Batman' games are fun as they are. They never made choice and consequence the focus of the game and that's fine. As for Arkham Origins... I think people shat too much on it, it is the least good game in the series, yes, but it's still great. My only real gripe is the boss fights that funnel you into fighting them the ONE way the game expects you to.
I also enjoyed Outer Worlds. It was a short but enjoyable double AA game. Wasn't a masterpiece or anything and I think that the reason people were disappointed with it is because they expected New Vegas 2 despite the developers saying not to expect that.
I was disappointed for various reasons: The hand-holdyness, the predictable story, and worse yet... the devs giving in to worst the post-2016 story telling trends. It was not a complete disaster though, just not worthy of all the awards and nominations it got... not by a long shot.
The only enjoyable part for me was doing the murder mystery DLC. Trying to find and put all the pieces together was genuinely fun, but it sadly doesn't have much replay value

@@YeOldEntertainment That's fair, to be honest I'm just tired of the "it's fixed" narrative when the game is still pretty much the same as launch although looks phantom liberty might bring some actual changes to the game itself but I don't have high hopes.
@@acev3521 To me that ship already sailed. I lost all interest in Cyberpunk 2077. At some point I said "you broke my heart CD PROJEKT RED" and I walked away from that game. I don't tend to come back to games that failed me regardless of how much people say "it got fixed" (no amount of convincing will get me to play No man's sky for example). And, especially in Cyberpunk's case, I don't even think the problems that I had with that game CAN be fixed in the first place. I didn't experience most of the glitches and technical issues most people had, but I found the lore to be bland, shallow and uninteresting compared to Shadowrun (if you're going to do a Cyberpunk game... first look at Shadowrun and ask yourself "what can I bring to this ballpark that is not already in Shadowrun"). And unlike Mafia, The Definitive Edition, which didn't even try to be a GTA-like game (and it should've) I think Cyberpunk tried... and failed spectacularly. And since Cyberpunk failed at GTAing and it failed at Shadowrunning... I really didn't care about it anymore.
@@patrickclark9430 I liked the second one better. I didn't like that they removed the traditional RPG item system and gave us that schematic BS system. And I also could've done without the planet scanning system, but other than that I see ME2 as an improvement in most respects.
