That’s only true if you actually pay attention to what social media tells you! I personally don’t give a shit about it. I buy the watches that I like and I buy them for myself and not to please anyone else. I also don’t fall victim to what the “in- crowd” thinks I should have. Lastly, all those posers buy the hype watches only so they can show off and they’re stupid enough to pay massively inflated prices for it. In other words, stop caring about what the people that are of no value to you say or think and start doing you! 🙂

While I partially agree with you, I believe that social media had a tremendously positive impact on the watch community. Mainly by making the hobby more attainable, understandable for masses. It allowed tons of watch enthusiasts around the world to connect, share, educate each other and help with developing interest and taste in watches. Thanks to social media I learned so much about movements, modding, fixing watches. Learned and bought the brands and models I would've never known otherwise. Found friends and fellow watch nerds. Saw hilarious dramas unfold. All in all it's not the social media itself but the way we use it and allow it to influence us. I love to consume RU-vid, reddit, WUS, Watchcrunch and many other resources, but I never really buy anything solely based on what I see there. Take TGV - I frequently disagree with him and certainly don't share his taste in watches, but I do enjoy his content.

I agree! My first proper watch, bought a year ago, was a 1969 Omega Seamaster Cosmic. Although it at a very reasonable cost I discovered after servicing it that it wouldn't be practical as a daily wearer. I now wear it around the house and love it, but I had to buy another watch to wear outdoors - especially when it's raining!

The problem is that there’s so many cool pieces for 500-1k. I get impatient trying to save up and always come across another 600$ one I “need” lmao. Then I have start the watch savings piggy bank all over again hahaha.

This does bring up the 100 good watches vs 1 AWESOME watch collector’s conundrum. Modern manufacturing and CAD have allowed many talented watch designers with a vision to turn out some awesome pieces that aren’t breaking the bank. If a watch as rugged and “functionally beautiful” as a marathon was produced in 1960 and sold at the same price as a Patek customers would say it was worth more money than the hand built slightly imperfect Nautilus. Nowadays manufacturers have all but perfected mass production and need in house hand made pieces to ask outrageous sums for or the pricing seems absolutely absurd. Does that mean that the Nautilus is going to function better than the GSAR? Not at all, they serve the same purpose and if we were comparing them side by side, apples to apples like a steel diver vs a steel diver, in the real world, one might be ever so slightly better at performing its duties than the other but is that tiny difference worth a 90,000$ premium? Lol hell no! Enthusiasts like us place more value on them as jewelry because we don’t necessarily need a watch. If your life absolutely depended on your timepiece would you rather be wearing an FP Journe or a Casio? Exactly lol. I’m willing to bet that if you took any individuals collection of ten 1000k watches and stuck them in a closet with someone else’s collection of ten 1,000,000$ watches and opened that closet 100 years later that the “cheap” pieces won’t have just turned to dust because they weren’t expensive. There are very few valid reasons for buying expensive vs good that I can think of, maybe appreciation as an investment instead of for wearing pleasure? Point is just because something is expensive doesn’t mean it’s that much better, and just because something is good doesn’t mean it needs to be expensive. I can buy any watch I want. Seriously. No watch is out of my reach. I have been blessed/lucky to have picked some good investments at the right time. I wear a Tudor BB58 every single day and it makes me as happy if not more so than my neighbor who wears a different rose gold Rolex every day of the week simply because they were costly. Don’t buy into the madness!!

Add bit more, sell some shit, don't go for takeaway for a while, don't buy clothes. And you are set for something better.

I recently made an impulse purchase of a 1965 Vulcain watch from Switzerland. Seller had a good reputation from buyers and stated the watch was in working order. The price was low so I purchased it. Got it and the photos were spot on, in fact it looked better than shown. However, when I put it on, after about 30 minutes it was running really fast. I did some online investigating and found several reasons it could run fast. I decided against returning it and take a chance it can be fixed. If not, it's a beautiful reminder of what can happen when making an impulse buy.

@@AboveTheClouds87 if a RU-vidr says you should not buy a Rolex (a company which delivers good quality and has history) and instead, you should buy a fashion watch which costs a few hundred dollars but it is worth nothing on the secondary watch market. It’s been one example in the past and apparently, that youtuber was earning money from the sales of that cheap and worthless watch.

@@AboveTheClouds87 I don't want to offend some RU-vidrs, but it even affects the relatively well-known channels like Bark and Jack or Theo and Harris. Watches on these channels are often only rated based on photos. I think if the RU-vidr in the video isn't holding the watch in his hand but does leave a review, that's the best red flag for you. The guitar comparison doesn’t make sense. The reason for buying a better guitar is not to make you a better guitarist, but to have something that sounds better, feels better and is nicer to play. Same with watches, a good one doesn’t tell time better than a cheap Casio but it’s much more satisfying to look at, to touch, to keep on the wrist.

@@vianouche1 Many watches are in the thousands of dollars. Obviously you know this. Not many people can afford a watch like that. Example being the submariner. Now obviously the much cheaper ones like Invicta isn't a Rolex, but it's the next best thing for $70 compared to 4-5 thousand dollars. As a consumer, it's the company's job to win me over. If another competitor can make something similar for much cheaper and of good quality then I'm gunna go for it. It doesn't matter if Rolex made it first. It's their job to convince me that the price they're asking is worth it. There's much more important things I'd spend 5k on before I buy 1 watch. Anyone who argues this is just a watch snob.

I had two Steinharts which I sold to finance higher end purchases. They were top quality for the money and were 39mm versions. I just noticed they have bought out an Explorer 2 style. That might be the Steinhart that I will buy next.

I've had a bad customer service experience with Steinhart, so I can't agree that they are wonderful. However, they do make watches that represent good value.

As TGV pointed out, Steinhart also has some interesting original designs. Also, a couple of their Rolex homages I would actually consider buying, one of them a replica of a vintage Rolex that hasn't been produced for several decades, and another a Rolex-style watch in a color that Rolex never made. For those reasons, I think these 2 would be quite acceptable.

Well Steinharr learns a lot from other brands, if you see what I mean... A brand that the respect I have for myself prevents me to ever put on my wirst. Seems that not everybody has the same self-respect and relation to honor.

To this day G Shocks are my favorite watches. Tougher than nails and last forever. I bought a 5000 in 1986 while in the Corps and beat that watch for over a decade before my son lost it. 😳

I agree with your watch hunting idea. I’ve done the same thing, and you are correct. You can sometimes find an amazing watch, that someone thought is either junk or it doesn’t work.

Watches like the Richard Mille look like something I'd appreciate more if it were a table, desk, or mantle clock, large enough to appreciate the mechanical artistry. I've seen several watches I would appreciate more if they were a personal desk clock. I think of several designs of the JLC Atmos clock that are lovely to sit and contemplate the design and engineering of the piece.

@@balesjo Yes, maybe it´s a bit narrow-minded, but I share the feeling that a wristwatch is concept limited to certrain criteria that are offset by adding "stuff" like braces, windows, mesh and more.

I just bought a black bay 41mm with blue dial. LOVE it. Absolutely love it. So much so I've been neglecting my other watches. Great choice.

Looked at te 36, 41 and the bb58 blue. Ended up with the 58 blue. I knew I would so was pointless trying the others on. Stunning watch for the money.

That's cool you got into mechanical watches but it's still good advice in general. Smart watches have a very limited lifespan. For casual use? Sure why not. But it just doesn't look right on a suit for example.

@@wasteddude not exactly casual use, you can do a lot of things with smartwatches, from their accurate timekeeping, to calendar, reminders, text, calls, step counter, heart rate, spo2, blood pressure measurement, and the most important thing to me is contactless payment as I don't have to carry a big wallet of cash and cards. I don't like to call them smart watches, they're wearable devices, like a phone, just small and look like a watch.

@@phucth91 I totally agree. I have an Apple watch. It is not an alternative to my other watches. It is something I use as a smartphone alternative, especially when paired with my airpods. For the convenience and functionality I accept the short lifespan. I cant make phone calls or listen to music with my Alpinist. Having said that I totally agree an Apple watch is a disposable tool. A real watch is a totally different beast. It can’t replace a real watch. A real watch is a thing of beauty.

Interesting pov! I mean, the very definition of smart watch is not really fitting as a term for TGV's critique. I could say any watch with some additional function other than hour of the day is smart. I assume as I can't recall this instant that TGV meant digital and connected to smart phones.

@@trustnoone9921 by just an employee I meant he’s not the boss and therefore not the one who makes the big bucks by selling luxury watches. Instead he’s on a salary and therefore most likely won’t be able to buy a Rolex, therefore I didn’t expect him to wear one.

@@mjdm1925 for example recently Ashford was a Glycine and Hamilton AD, but not anymore. Another example is Purchasedirect with Edox and so on.

My biggest blunder (if you want to call it that) is that it has taken a while to find the size range that looks best on my small wrist, which is 36-39mm. Also, I really don't like Roman Numerals on my watches (only had one and recently sold it). I have one beautiful Hamilton that I like the design, but just can't get myself to wear it as it's a 40-41mm and lit looks huge on my wrist. I'm finally to the point that no matter how I love it, if I can't find it within my size range, I pass on it.
