when I got married 20 years ago , I told my bridesmaids and maid of honor they could pick their own dresses. Any color, any style only restrictions was no long dresses. it was great not knowing what to expect.

Re: 4 - Steel Magnolias ... "if this was in fashion in 1989 ..." Oh my word yes it was. I was a teenager in the late 80's/early 90's and the watermarked taffeta, pouffy sleeved dresses absolutely were in. I remember many a prom dress and bridesmaid dress that looked very like these.

I don't hate the theme wedding 27 dresses dress. its a costume after all. I'd give a shout out to Anya and Xander's wedding bridesmaid dresses thru put Buffy and Willow in. Buffy describes it as 'radioactive'.

I think one of the worst I've seen was in 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' in Anya and Xander's wedding(never happened)in Season 6. Buffy, Willow, Dawn and Tara were in ugly emerald green satin gowns with flowers on them...I thought they were hideous!

Buffy the Vampire Slayer also did this trope well, for the wedding of Anya and Xander. The latter left Anya at the altar, triggering her reversion back to a vengeance demon -- but Buffy and Willow's bridesmaid dresses were as much to blame, IMO!

"lights on dresses make for fire hazards" yeah no. LED string lights don't pose as threats. Your Christmas tree is more flammable than your light up dress.

I never thought most of the dresses in 27 Dresses were that bad. Certainly not all of them. The kimono was very pretty, and it's unfair to say the Gone With the Wind one was ugliest, with an option like that pink and yellow nightmare...

The one in Runaway Bride was actually pretty trendy for the 90's.

For the "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" one, they should've gone with the clip of where they reveal the dress. Just the "Oh my god" from Toula while the rest of her family just loves the outlandish design is hilarious!!!!

Conffesions of a shopaholic's dress look ugly alone but when all the bridemaids walk along the isle it's so beautiful. I loved how they made the bride's white dress pop out.

Honestly, some of these weren't that bad. I feel like you were more making fun of what was fashionable at that time of each respective movie than what was actually that bad. Runaway Bride's were not that bad. Gossip Girl wasn't either. I wouldn't have bothered to include those on the list. The Gone with the Wind gown was NOT the worse in 27 dresses. The green one or the pink one, both with puff sleeves at 8:15, or the LA wedding one that was more appropriate for a street walker was. And as bad as My Big Fat Greek Wedding's dresses were, they should been placed lower on the list. They're not as bad as the Christmas tree dresses or the Big Bird dresses. Actually the Friends scene made me realize that it's a ridiculous cliche to have ugly bridesmaid dresses. Home Improvement had Jill wearing a Little Bo Peep-like dress for Al and Eileen's almost wedding. I'm not sure if Friends or Home Improvement did it first. I think they were around the same time with only a year or two difference at the most. All the bridesmaid dresses on the rest of Friends were actually really nice. It makes me wish someone would do a list of the BEST bridesmaid dresses in movies and TV shows. Maybe even in reality, because who could forget Pippa Middleton?

I agree with earlier sentiments regarding Anya's choices in bridesmaids dresses, they were exceptionally awful, but you can't forget the dresses from the Melanie Griffith/Harrison Ford film Working Girl. Those were pretty horrendous, too.

Rachel's dress is so iconic it should have maybe won but 27 dresses is centered around the ugly dress concept more than any other so I suppose it was a fair victory. Even though I must admit that a theme weddings punds fun...even of it would be a horrible idea.

It's important to remember that in My Big Fat Greek Wedding, it was a bridesmaid who went behind the bride's back and got those dresses because she loved them. The bride didn't want those dresses at all.

With 27 dresses I think you can exclude the kimono and saree as ugly because they're representing people's culture, so it's a bit offensive to call it ugly. Otherwise the rest were horrid.

Half of these comments, people don't know how to think. see, some of these were ugly on purpose, some were fashion at the time. But, despite whatever reason they were there, she is completely allowed to hate it. there's always gonna be fashion from different eras that we hate, let's use our common sense people. I thought 90's fashion was disgusting. It's just too pop and teenage girly. See how it works? Some people don't like things whether or not they're the fashion trend. Not all fashion trends are good ones.

Actually, if you see the face Becky Bloomwood makes when she sees the dress for the first time at 3:22, you get that she hates it. And she's a bridesmaid, not the bride, so her fashion sense is not wrong...she wasn't the one who picked the dress...her friend is the one to blame. Also I think the yellow atrocity fron 2 Broke Girls is far more revolting than all 27 dresses put together.

The Nanny deserves to be on here. There is an ugly, pink bridesmaid dress that Fran wears to a wedding in the episode where Grace finds out Fran gets paid to be a nanny. I don't know if this would count, but there are also some ugly bridesmaid dresses in Boy Meets World where Topanga picks out horrible dresses for Angela, Rachel and Morgan, so Morgan ends up beating her dress with an umbrella.

My girls wore little black dresses in a style they liked with purple wraps. I don't understand picking out hideous dresses for people who are suppose to be your friends.

1971...The Mary Tyler Moore Show episode "A Friend in Deed". Twinks McFarland, soon to be Twinks Tvedt's maid of honor dress for Mary and bridesmaid dress for Rhoda. Can't believe it didn't make the list or at least an honorable mention. But then MsMojo doesn't remember much prior to the 1990s.

Again with the hate on the high-low dresses. It was the 1990's. I can attest, having been a bridesmaid myself in 1992, this style was ALL the rage. That and reem upon reem of taffeta, preferably watermarked or high gloss, possibly with a contrasting lace overlay. I got the watermarked taffeta in apricot with a grey and moss green lace overlay. Drop-waisted too. With matching shoes. And we were the HEIGHT of fashion, I'll have you know!! (yeah I look back now with "OMG what were we thinking???") Oh and it was the middle of summer too. We baked in those dresses. So enough with the hate on the "yesteryear fashions", okay? Pretty sure you'd have a field day with bridesmaid fashions from the 1970's.

The dresses in #9 are identical to the Vera Wang 'White' Wedding collection. My daughter was the Homecoming Queen in this dress, it was beautiful in Ivory.
