This is gold right here! And a whole lot of it! Thank you so much for doing this. I'm an early beginner and this means a lot. Much love

Excellent and interesting video.. I have to agree with Willie Clancy’s concert pitch piping but his playing of The Old Bush o the Maloney chanter is other worldly.

He does the same cheeky drop down to the D on that too, legendary piper!

Yes I enjoyed it and I don’t even play uilleann pipes. Sharing with a young man who plays bagpipes.

Great video! Top It Off is such a fantastic tune. But everything I've seen equates the terms Hop Jig and Slip Jig as synonymous (so, a Hop Jig is still 9/8). I ~think~ Tommy Reck puts in an extra beat when he bounces down to the low D, making it go from 9/8 to 12/8 in bars 4 and 8? Regarding the note between D and E, I WISH it was called "ghost E" (I think that's what you're saying? My ears could be fooling me), but alas Ennis himself explains it as Ghost D in his written tutor :-/

Like a lot of things in uilleann piping there’s no 100% correct terminology. I think I call it Ghost E. Maybe Ghost D is more correct! Also you are right about the Reck version, the extra bounce is such a great jam. Incidentally another name for Top it Off is ‘Rouse it’ 😅

Well mister, NOW you've done it... I've watched a number of your videos over the last few days and I've been inspired to get off my butt and dig "Pipe-enstein" out of the closet. (Back story - I took up the pipes 30 years ago but, due to life and laziness, haven't played in over a decade) My set started life as a Dave Williams practice set, then added a used Joe McKenna stock, drones and regs (but opinions vary on who actually made the regs - some have suggested Lamb, but I'm not convinced), hence "Pipe-enstein". So the journey begins again. Hopefully this time in a more mature, motivated, and patient form. And you'll be pleased to know that I gave you full credit when wifey-poo asked what the hell I was doing! Lol The good news is that there's half a continent and a major ocean between here and Wales, so there will be plenty of time for warnings if she decides to exact retribution! 😂 Keep up the great work you're doing here and in your artwork.

Thanks so much I really appreciate it. Really over the moon to be the inspiration behind your uilleann renaissance. Joe & Eugene are still around making pipes so maybe fire them a message and get to the bottom of it! And good luck on your piping journey 🍻

savourneen deelish is Irish. 's a mhuirnin dilis. You see a handful of song tune titles in older collections with that term of endearment: "mo mhuirnin"

Great! Fun watching. Tons of info snd inspiration as I go to practice coordinating my right and left elbows😃 Honestly, it is a fantastic deep dive into listening, an important part of playing. Think my pipe teacher might enjoy it too. Will bring it to his attention today. Thanks a bunch for all the info.

Ok I don't get it, where is the mistake on the high level hornpipe?😅
@sionrouse

Okay here you go! On the last time around he plays the first part 3 times instead of the usual 2. I guess Paddy got lost in the jam going to the bass regulator. Really doesn’t matter and I think it adds to the track and the vibe. Hope that helps 😀

There is such a small amount of instruction on YT for us mere beginners/low intermediate learners. This was great instruction and I always seem to comment on your videos to “please do more videos!”. I have spent a small fortune on cds so I am mostly Spotify in these days, but a couple of the albums on the list are on there. I may have to buy that J Doran one though. Thank you Jason, you are an excellent teacher and I can see the joy you get out of sharing the music. Dave

Thank you Dave, I’m all about the education and not just how to play, there’s so much lore and depth to the instrument that a lot of people would never find out so I love bringing that to a wider audience. And the maintenance and tips too certainly helps!
