It's a shame how the game is nowadays for young horses. Any of them that actually have true greatness potential are sent out to stud after their 3 year old year when they're still a year or 2 short of their best and never get a chance to run into their 4 and 5 year old years, thus accumulating 20 major races like they did in the past. I still feel ripped off by not getting to see American Pharoah as a 4 and 5 year old, he was slowly but surely turning into an absolute monster and I think we missed seeing something really special there...

Has anyone mentioned the mare Don't Tell Sophia. She was bought for $1,000 and racing on turf and dirt, she earned more than $1.3 million. She won the Spinster Stakes in 2014, defeating one of the top mares Close Hatches, and in the Breeder's Cup Distaff, the 6-year old Don't Tell Sophia came rocketing by horses to nose out Iotapa for second, finishing second to Eclipse champion Untapable.

This is an excellent category and these horses are not to be ignored as they can be outstanding without being the best ever. Thanks for so much info that is seldom mentioned and which I did not know about like how fast Prove Out proved out to be. I think it's great how two young guys are so knowledgeable about the thoroughbreds not only of today but in America's past.

That is some of the kindest words i've heard on this channel in a very long time. You've pretty much summarised what I set out to do on this account to a tea. Covering not just today but americas past. And especially for a new generation of horse racing fans. Thanks as always for your kind comments you always have a lot to offer and a lot on your mind. Even bringing up things that I didn't even know about certain racehorses.

Nice compilation. I’ll suggest a filly worthy of honorable mention: Bold ‘n Determined. She won 16 out of 20 lifetime starts, and as a 3 year old in 1980, she won seven Grade 1 races, going from Santa Anita to Oaklawn to Churchill (the Kentucky Oaks) to Belmont to Keeneland. She missed the NYRA filly Triple Tiara by a head, finishing second by that margin in the Mother Goose in between victories in the one mile Acorn and the mile and one-half CCA Oaks. Despite that record, she wasn’t champ of the sophomore filly division in 1980. And that wasn’t shocking; 1980 was the year that Genuine Risk became the first filly winner of the Kentucky Derby since Regret in 1915, and she followed that with seconds in both the Preakness and Belmont. But that September, Bold ‘n Determined and Genuine Risk met in the Grade 1 Maskette at Belmont, and after a tight stretch duel that saw both of them in the lead, who was the winner? Bold ‘n Determined, by a nose. And she was carrying 4 pounds more than the Derby winner. She doesn’t get anywhere near the credit her record earned. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Q7nBbPe0R7M.html

For me as an Aussie and a huge fan of this horse - Hay List. A true champion. The only horse to give a fully fit uninjured Black Caviar a race. Won plenty himself - plenty of 2nd to BC. Those 2 would often put 6-8 lengths on Buffering - that horse would win group ones including 1 in Dubai after HL/BC retired. A champion in my opinion who raced at the same time as a freak
@bgardiner3354
@bgardiner3354 4 месяца назад
There are some others that franked the Hay List / Black Caviar form internationally. Ortensia won a Nunthorpe against a solid G1 springing field and of course also won an Al Quoz in Dubai, beating Sole Power. Then there's Star Witness who was only beaten a half-length by Prohibit in a King Stand Stakes weighted as a Northern Hemisphere 4yo. Hay List was a very good sprinter who had a lot of feet problems that made him hard to get fit... I'm not sure we ever saw his absolute best.... his run in the 2012 Lightning Stakes where he pushed BC to equal the 5F track record at Flemington was his highest rated race. He finished 2nd to her 4 times all in G1's... he's rightfully up among the very best sprinters to have raced in Australia.
@fatboy5926
@fatboy5926 4 месяца назад
@@bgardiner3354even with his injury issues - if BC weren’t around we’d be calling him a freak. Routinely destroying quality fields or finishing close 2nd’s to BC with huge margins back to the others. Carrying 58.5 to win the Newmarket. Hay List was a freak - racing at the same time as maybe the fastest horse ever. Tough break. I am bias I am a fan of Hay List - but yeah as you said the form around all that stacks up.

Glad you liked the video. Personally I think Kincsem is pretty fairly rated in my book. Everyone knows her as holding the greatest unbeaten record in horse racing history. And she’s one of the rare racehorses to be honored with her own motion picture. The other reason is akin to Man O’ War quite a few of her races were just handed to her. With 6 walkovers and 6 match races comprising that winning streak. Still very impressive but enough people recognize her achievements that she doesn’t come off to me as underrated whatsoever.

An impossible list to ever get definitive about. Some good examples of the different reasons why horses get forgotten: running on turf (North America), overshadowed by a stablemate or just another horse, or failing in races that tend to get a lot of the attention (the Breeders Cup in North America, or pick from the Arc, Epsom etc) You hear about how often horses could run in those days. Today's horses are bred to be fast, brittle and unable to race more than once every 6-8 weeks or past the age of 3. If you keep pumping drugs into horses and then retiring them at 3 you are going to end up with a blood stock of vulnerable horses. I think the sport is too important to be left to the owners and trainers who are all about short-term success, and care not for the welfare of the horses or the sport.

Great video. For me, other underappreciated horses include: Mac Diarmida (won 12 of 14 in 1978 including a win over John Henry, but running on turf hurt him, especially with Affirmed, Alydar, Seattle Slew, and Exceller grabbing headlines) Genuine Risk (only filly to finish in top 2 in each of the Triple Crown races and never finished worse than third) Danedream (Absolutely flew in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in record time, would have had a higher Timeform rating if from UK/Ireland/France and not from Germany) Peteski (Yes Canadian racing is generally inferior, but he beat the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winners in the 1993 Molson Million after winning the Canadian Triple Crown) Whisk Broom II (OK, so maybe he didn't run 1 1/4 miles in 2 minutes flat with those heavy old school shoes and crappy track, but like Noor and Exceller, did well coming from Europe) Old Vic (1989 Derby Double winning the Prix du Jockey Club and Irish Derby impressively, but overshadowed on the global stage by Nashwan, Sunday Silence, and Easy Goer) Black Tie Affair (Marginal career, but went out with a bang in 1991, 6 consecutive victories: Stephen Foster Hcp, Michigan Mile, Cornhusker Hcp, Iselin Hcp, Washington Park Hcp, and finally capping it off with Breeders' Cup Classic, now THAT's a swan song) Roses in May (If not for Ghostzapper, would have completed BC Classic / Dubai World Cup double) Fort Larned (Outstanding 2012 season, but rest of career admittedly pales in comparison)
@mikerelva6915
@mikerelva6915 Год назад
Easy Goer and Sunday Silence are both Triple Crown winners with out the other. They were putting up Flightline numbers regularly, but the way the public perceives this game is just based on win and losses, winning big thing like the triple crown (especially after a long drought), not who you beat or how you lost. A good horse will look great against average horses, where two great horses against each other will look average.
@mikerelva6915

Real interesting you place Prove Out at #1 most under rated horse, for what he did over a three month span, but then pace Bayern at most over rated even tho he did the same over a few months span but even achieved more (classic, more G1's, earnings). The Secretariat as GOAT trope is easily debunked by Prove Out tho. How can Secretariat be the greatest of all time when he was not even the greatest of his year? Prove Out carried 7 more pounds and smoked an older Secretariat at his best distance. Secretariat fans are all about time, how he ran the fastest Derby, Preakness and Belmont, but neglect the fact the tracks were mega suped up and times are the most meaningless stat in all sports - in Almond Eyes record breaking 12F every horse on the track ran faster than Secretariat as the track was a speed way. Allowance horses were shattering records that summer on the east coast of '73. Peak Prove Out would have went 2:23 had he raced Secretariat Belmont day, as at his best he was simply better than Secretariat. Like Bayern, he was not consistent thru his whole career, but for a few months when he was healthy and everything clicked, he was the best horse in the world. Like Bayern, he was very likely the greatest sprinter, miler and route horse for that period of time too. It is, however, a cold reality that horses back then were on tons of steroids and PED's as they simply did not test for it. Today technology is better but testing is much more serious - rather than taking steroids the most severe cases are then taking things like sheep placenta. You just can't play in this era, but if you put horses like Flightline, Justify, Pharoah tons of steroids, let then run til 6, they would easily out up some mind bending numbers. These modern horses bounce and don't run as much as steroids of yesterday helped keep the horses healthier, stronger and heal. No one wants to talk about this tho, but horses pre drug testing era dopes like crazy, as much or more than body builders.
@thorne1239
@thorne1239 Год назад
Thank you for acknowledging how crazy fast that Belmont surface was during Secretariats summer. They had claimers going 1:09 and change for six furlongs. It's not that I don't think Secretariat was great, it's just people can't even talk about another horse without some casual injecting their overblown memories of the horse. I've talked to old timers who knew the horse was doped. It's aggravating.
@mikerelva6915
@mikerelva6915 Год назад
@@thorne1239 exactly. The whole east coast was smoking that summer. Casuals don't understand that raw time is the most over rated aspect in all of racing. Secretariat was a great horse but I don't think anywhere near the clear greatest of all time. Sham was close to him in two of those races and he was hardly the second best horse ever. It was a good crop and Secretariat was an amazing horse but he caught some amazingly sped up tracks. His Whitney was just a moderate 1:49 and change when the tracks cooled out. How can Secretariat be the best horse ever when he wasn't even the best horse that year??? Ppl give him excuses for his loss to Onion, but how about when he went 12F vs Prove Out at his supposed favorite track and distance, healthy, and STILL lost? The horse lost like 1/5th his races. Compared to Man O War, Nearco, Ormonde, Eclipse, even Native Dancer, so many amazing horses thru history, how can he be the best ever? He def was one of the best ever, and def one of best three year olds ever, but the TC times were sped up and he was definitely not the clear best ever
@charlotteforbes2090
@charlotteforbes2090 4 месяца назад
Great list! Fortunately, Seabiscuit did get a movie, so at least his name is known. (Not that it doesn't belong here). However, Native Dancer is my top pick for most under-rated horse of all time! There's a book written by an expert, and I read some of it. This book tries to solve the debate of whether Man o War or Secretariat was the greatest horse of all time. Ultimately, the author decides that it is a tie between the 2 (though I'd say that Secretariat should come out as leader, due to his massive records and times). Nevertheless, the author makes a clever side remark about how maybe his bets would be on Native Dancer, or Gray Ghost, who'd only ever lost 1 of 22 races, and by a head. Had the horse won that race, he probably would have been far more celebrated. I'd never heard of Native Dancer before then, and had certainly heard the names Secretariat and MOW. Anyhow, that's just one man's opinion.

Sham also suffered a career ending injury trying to keep up with Secretariat during the Belmont Stakes. When you're easily a Triple Crown winner except for the greatest horse of all time and nobody talks about you, you're definitely an underrated horse. My pick for #1 but I wouldn't argue 2 or 3 either unless Prove Out is #1.

Nothing against Exceller as he ran a big race in the '78 JCGC, but Seattle Slew didn't have a clean trip either. He broke through the gate before the start and then around the first turn, Cordero blew one of his stirrups and lost control of Slew which led to those brutal fractions. Without that, I'd bet Slew wins that race.

You could make a five hour video of all the underappreciated or forgotten horses. I think Skip Away is the last great american handicap horse. Amazingly consistent. And for a time in the summer 98' his rival Formal Gold became Pegasus, posting track records and a string of beyers in the mid 120's. The brilliance of Ghostzapper, Saint Liam, and Serena's Song. Good handicap horses like Behrens, Pleasant Tap. Even great Forego rarely gets talked about today. Bertrando for his consistancy and his son Officer for being utterly brilliant but brittle. There are so many horses that could have been household names, but injury or inconstancy tripped them up.

The only horse in history to have won 4 separate divisions of Horse Of The Year ( Sprint, Distance, Grass, Handicap) was Dr. Fager. He set a World record for one mile at Arlington in Chicago when he won 'eased up' by 10 lengths in 1.32.1 and averaged carrying a weight of 134 lbs for his 4 year old campaign. When he ran in the 7 furlong - Vosburgh Handicap at Aqueduct in NY, he carried 139 lbs and won eased up in 1.20.1. Had he didn't come down with colic when he was three, he would have been able to take part in The Triple Crown. He did beat the 3 Year Old Champion Damascus at one mile before coming down with colic.

The most winning horse on the mainland is Kingston with 89 wins 30 of them stakes from 1886-1894 surprisingly he was a stallion becoming leading sire in 1900 and 1910 exactly a decade apart. @@SketchyTheHorseGuy The odd thing about the Easy Goer - Sunday Silence rivalry is that everyone thought Easy Goer would get the better of Sunday Silence but in their four races he won only once. Then with the highly reputed Phipp's breeding it was predicted that Easy Goer would be the better sire. Once again, Sunday Silence came out ahead as he was sent to Japan and unlike Easy Goer was a tremendous hit. Another remarkable thing about him is that though he was a rare black Thoroughbred, he has had numerous white and spotted descendants and one, Sodashi, has even won a Grade 1 race, the Victoria Mile. She defeated the Breeder's Cup Filly and Mare Turf G1winner Loves Only You in her prior race the Sapporo Kinen. I think that successful white thoroughbreds would add a whole new interest in horse racing here in the US too because of their novelty and distinctive appearance standing out from the majority of bays, browns, chestnuts and grays.

Only female to win or place in all 3 triple crowns a fete like 224 in the Belmont will probably never happen again!!! PERIOD. In some ways Rachel too, who will always be 2nd best to Zenyatta. And Zenyatta should have won HOY 2009 after BCC win. I also put Lady's Secret ahead of Ruffian (#4) with Rachel 5th. Also Street Cry, to father the 2 greatest fillies in history Zenyatta in the Americas and Winx in Oceania, is another fete that will probably never happen again

I really enjoyed this. I always think it's great seeing horses that ran before I was able to see them. Keep up the great work!
