Now I don't want to do many of these lists where it's just one designer or publisher or genre, but occasionally I feel some need mention. Mainly because of how oversaturated the industry is. Worker Placement games are a dime a dozen and there's so many to choose from and a ton of great ones, way more than a Top 10 can manage.
So with some difficult rankings, here's my Top 10 Worker Placement Games. What are yours, leave them in the comments and discuss, I'm sure you'll come up with many I love and the odd couple I don't! :P
Also thank you for providing feedback on the Rode VideoMic Pro audio from the last video, I'm glad to see this new setup is an improvement for you.

We have very similar taste in worker placement games. Anachrony, Trickerion, Kanban, and Architects are all in my favorites. I have considered picking up Viticulture but didn't know if I would need it in my collection with the previously mentioned already being there. Great video!!

Nice vid , good insights as someone slowly getting into more games. As for the seasons mechanic, how about Everdell? Played it recently at a con, loved it. Waiting for it to come back into stock at local games shop.

I like Everdell, good game, but the seasons thing is mainly just Round 1, Round 2, etc. It doesn't affect your choices as much as Viticulture does.

I dont know about the others but I watch RU-vid reviews to find out more about the game genre and why certain titles deserve the spot on a list. Will like to hear more from you. I know this video is a bit older, but I just recently discovered your videos and I love all of them :) Keep up the amazing job! I don't know if you still check these comments, but I have a couple of thoughts and a question :) I see in the comments you dislike Champions because of the luck factor. Yes it is a bit on the longer side (2 player I often think I would like 1 round less, but it is not a big issue for me), but that actually to some degree reduces the luck factor - you can get lucky/unlucky on some rolls, but overall you roll dice so often that if you look at the entire game it does even out most of the time. Don't get me wrong, it is still on the lighter side, but it is fun. The Valhalla expansion reduces feelbad moments, but overall a good roll is still much better than a bad one - you can roll nothign, loose your dice and get valhalla tokens, getting something for them, but another player might roll well and kills their monster, they still often loose most/all dice and get the same token you got as well, so they got both the valhalla goodies and the VPs of the the monster... I still like that expansion a lot, since it does feel better if you roll nothing and it gives you more balanced factions (a second power with the leader die for each of them) and with the leader die you get to the fun monster slaying part even faster. A good way to look at it is a "push your luck" worker placement game - will you go for the "safe" battle with a lot of redundant dice or are you pushing your luck doing more battles at once, most of them stretched pretty thin? And for the question - have you tried "dungeon pets"? It sounds like something that fits what you like with thematic WP games that have some unique twist. There is the hand management part of the game which makes it go pretty long, since it can be extremely complicated to think through especially if you push for 3 or even 4 pets and it leads to some downtime (though I do like the puzzle of that part of the game - BTW it is also quite a problem to teach, you sometimes just need to play through a round for people to see what is actually happening during that part of the game). The twist in the WP part is that you have to split your workers into groups behind a screen at the start of the round - more groups means you could get more actions done, but the order in which you place the groups is by size - bigger groups first; meaning you have to balance how early you want to go vs how many actions you would like to take. I don't know how often you get to play the same game with the same group - in my opinion this is amazing to play with people who you've already tought it in the past and everyone knows what is going on.

I love these kind of videos, I love personal opinions for games - that help me decide which game could be interesting for me. However I would like you to show (more) of the game's pictures - art, design, mechanics, components, whatever. Talking is fine but for a such long video you need to show more for the eyes.

My top ten: 10. Lorenzo il Magnifico - need to play it more 9. Rajas of the Ganges 8. Champions of Midgard - this has really been slipping for me lately 7. Stone Age 6. The Voyages of Marco Polo 5. Energy Empire 4. Viticulture 3. The Gallerist 1b. A Feast for Odin 1a. Anachrony Tzolk'in has a chance to make it onto my list, but it's another one I need to play more. I also need to figure out where to slot Architects of the West Kingdom into there, because it definitely goes in there somewhere. Still need to play Kanban and Trickerion.
@TheBrokenMeeple
@TheBrokenMeeple 5 лет назад
I'm not certain that I consider dice placement as worker placement as I tended to exclude those from the criteria. But even if I did, Lorenzo and Marco wouldn't come close.
@redeyedghost1406
@redeyedghost1406 5 лет назад
@@TheBrokenMeeple The definition of worker placement from BGG: More precisely referred to as "action drafting", this mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Once that limit for an action is reached, it typically either becomes more expensive to take again or can no longer be taken for the remainder of the round. As such, not all actions can be taken by all players in a given round, and action "blocking" occurs. If the game is structured in rounds, then all actions are usually refreshed at the start or end of each round so that they become available again. Sure sounds like Marco Polo to me. Dice placement is just a subcategory of worker placement. And in Lorenzo you're not even placing dice, so how is it dice placement? The dice simply determine the value/strength of your workers.

Nope, not entirely. Scythe is definitely not a worker placement game but I also don't consider Dinosaur Island to be one either. You have no tension with workers in Phase 3 and in Phase 1, the only thing you can be blocked from obtaining is a specific dino recipe, there's loads of dice and you can simply just up your storage limits.

I love the way that lists are always changing...the way a game moves up or down... sometimes not for any reason...just think things have changed in the way you look at a game... I do class Dino island as a worker placement game...I don't know how else you'd describe it...engine builder? Perhaps...but worker placement is definitely there... Raiders is a worker placement game where you always have an option...even when someone goes where you wanted... Opinions...that's what makes the community so great... Cheers Luke...😁

The Tuscany expansion brings in some advanced cards that you can use. These are not only more balanced but have dual effects so that if one effect you can't do, you can usually do the other and both are good abilities. Teotihuacan isn't a worker placement game at all because you have to manage your movement for selecting actions on a giant rondel. Midgard I wasn't a fan of but bear in mind I've not played the expansions for it which I hear fix all the issues and I may like it more when I do get to try them. @@TheBrokenMeeple ooh I always thought of Teotihuacan as worker placement since you do have workers and move them around the board to produce. There are some spots that they can lock themselves into. It's always interesting to see reviews and top-10's - if nothing else, then to find out how the taste of the host matches your own, so you know how much trust to put into his opinions. ... and you really lost me in the end. A game being "dated" is *NOT* a reason for it to be bad. And I don't see why a game being punishing (like Agricola) makes it bad. - at all, actually. Games are not supposed to be easy.
@TheBrokenMeeple
@TheBrokenMeeple 5 лет назад
There's a difference between easy and constantly being punched in the face or heavily restricted in your options. I like having a lot of options and being allowed to do my chosen path to victory, not be rail roaded into a specific route.

Really? Architects #2 and it was a coin toss for #1? I am a little burned out on worker place mechanic; there has been a lot of lazy game design with worker place. Designer and publishers just throwing stuff out there to feed the insatiable demand of our hobby. So i have passed of playing this at the Cons, BGG, dice retreat..... i will have to take at it look now.
@ThomasLuongo

Greg, Architects is a really good game. I don't know that it's a top WP game (but I'm not a huge Rosenberg fan so that knocks half of the 'good' ones off my list) but it's definitely a different vibe. I happen to prefer Everdell as the game which stretches worker placement. And that may simply be b/c I'm terrible at Architects and am good at Everdell. Salt this opinion to taste.

Everdell is hard to classify but I like it more for the card play then the few workers you have.

Architects front-loads all of the interesting decisions in the game. Your character is super important. The draft is really important. Your first Apprentice is incredibly important. The other 95% of the game? Surprisingly stale. You build up some resources, you lose your tempo when they get arrested. You build up some more resources. You lose tempo spending turns arresting other players and the cashing in because you need to. There is no build up. There aren't any big moments. You just watch the other players and try to figure out when everyone is wanting to end the game and build as much as you can as late as you can. Its not terrible but its moment to moment gameplay is worse than any WP game in my collection.

I don't think of Dinosaur Island as worker placement. You do your own thing in Phase 3 with no tension or blocking and in Phase 1 you can only be blocked out of a dino recipe. Didn't really tick enough boxes for the category. Midgard is ok but it is a very swingy luck fest with all those dice which puts me off it. Now granted I need to play it again with someone who has the expansions. Carcassonne I would not call worker placement based on my criteria. Also Teotihuacan doesn't fit my definition of worker placement either as you are on a rondel and never really get blocked out of a space.

Haven't played Architects but I think I'll like it. Viticulture is one of my top games. But I don't really like worker placement games. I think the fact that so many of them are "game ends after x turns" turns me off badly (even Viticulture does this). Architects doesn't do this, I believe. This is my biggest board game rules pet peeves.
