@@framefocusofficial I think you did a good job. The Longest Day was not that well acted as those on your list. Possibly you missed Pearl Harbor, which was a well acted movie and had good production quality.
It's a serious stretch to label "Sophie's Choice" as a world war film, it featured one fairly short World War II flashback but was otherwise set in the 1950s. The flashback was important to Sophie's mindset, however the movie's setting wasn't during the war. Apparently "The Bridge on the River Kwai" (1957) winning Oscars for best picture, best actor and best director, that didn't impress the makers of this list even slightly.

Not a whole lot of war movies in this collection - 1917, Saving Private Ryan, - sure. Maybe Downfall too, since there are some combat sequences. Left out the best WWII war film, the Cruel Sea - a 1953 Brit movie that features live ammunition fired throughout - including live, real depth charges! 30 Seconds over Tokyo? The Dam Busters? Fury? Who the heck reviewed this collection anyway?

Schindler's list ?! You've got to be joking. There is no war in it. No combat, no soldiers fighting which is something a war film has to have. Schindler's list is closer to documentary than a movie. If movies like Schindler's List count, a much much better and far more brutal film is "Volhynia", in English speaking world renamed to "Hatred". But be warned. It is unlike anything you've ever seen. More brutal than any horror film, and based on true events.

All Quiet on the Western Front (original & remake) is for me the best as it captures how absolutely mind bogglingly terrible WWI was. A Bridge Too Far should have been on the list as well as The Battle of Britain.

I think you did an excellent job and nothing stated in my opinions that follow should discredit yours at all. These are opinions of course. Its wonderful to have the opportunity to view your excellent video and think through this most difficult and misguided of film genres. Generally us appreciate far more rare anti-war movies. Very few exist. Certainly not the Private Ryans and Dunkirks. Although I admire many on your top 10 I prefer your next 10. But apart from omitting thin red line I think your choices were excellent across all films named with only a few tiny exceptions. Private Ryan excellent but heroism at end schmaltzy at best. Same true that "All quiet..." chose to leave book and wallow in dramatic end. Book is unquestionably more important ww1/2 book ever. Fury was puzzling. And I felt Dunkirk was all about cinematography and was lacking in most everything else starting with 1 dimensional characters. I feel war has to have incredibly detailed characters or mere pawns, as "Come and See" did so successfully. Schindlers was spectacular apart from Schindler but I do feel "Come and See" is the one movie that unrelentingly captures the horrors of war. No drama or heroes required in war. Just the horror it is. Of the American movies only Thin Red Line approached this apart from, once again, the dying swan ending of the hero.

How can I take you serious when you did not have Lawrence of Arabia anywhere on this list. The cinematography alone would have made it number one let alone the musical score the acting. It won 7 academy awards the same as your number one. I have to assume you know nothing about war movies that were made before you were born. Yes you had Casablanca as the only movie made in the golden age of Hollywood, but what about Patton, The longest day, The great escape, bridge over the river Kwai, Pearl Harbor, The Battle of Britain, The big Red One, Iwo Jima, The sand Pebbles, 55 days in Peaking, Gettysburg, The great Dictator, the list goes on and on. You know nothing John Snow! All of that was on the top of my head, if I had more time I could name 100 more that are better than half of your list. If you were a student of mine and that was your assignment I would give you a D+ maybe a C- and I would write on your paper in blood red ink, you didn’t understand the assignment, not your top 10, THE top 10.

@@framefocusofficial You are right about Oppenheimer. It is a different perspective. IMOP Nolan tried and failed by including Strauss going after Oppenheimer over spite and jealousy. It took away the movies power which was about building the bomb and dropping it. The movie should have ended there. My other problem with the movie is the relationships of Oppenheimer's wife and mistress. Nolan spent all of maybe ten minutes on those relationships and they were far more interesting and important to who Oppenheimer was. Just my opinion. Right, wrong or otherwise. Inglorious Basterds? You have to be kidding me. An utterly fake movie. And that silly Fireflies animation film? You must have been stoned making this bad list. Only one film from the 40s and one from the 50s? Most of these "best movies" are put together by people born after the 1980s with only a partial notion of film history. I'm sorry but Oppenheimer is WAAAAY overrated and confusing; and with a lot of actors doing a bad job by mumbling their lines. And Christopher Nolan is also overrated as well. How about 1949s great film Battleground? Or 1945s Objective Burma? Fury has no business on a "great" list as it's a piece of junk. A much better tank film is 1943's Sahara with Bogart. A terrific and underrated WW2 movie is Von Ryan's Express from 1965 with Frank Sinatra & Trevor Howard. And of course you missed The Great Escape. How about The Guns of Navarone with Gregory Peck? And Shindler's List should never have been the number 1 film----I wouldn't have had in the top 10. Someone below mentioned When Trumpets Fade. That's a terrific WW2 movie from 2004, I think. And you can't have a best WW2 list without The Bridge On The River Kwai. So many films, so many bungled opportunities.

The reasons Russian war movies are great are, the Russians speak Russian, the Germans speak German, etc. with the voiceovers translating the other languages into Russian and the CC are in English. Before the Russian soldiers do anything the Generals and when possible, Stalin, sit down and go over what they are going to do, they tell what armies are going where and why.
