Top 10 WORST Cards That Saw Tournament Play

Throughout the history of the Magic, plenty of cards have come and gone and not made any real impact on the game. However, sometimes a card will be considered quite bad by the community that still saw some play. Today, we’re going over those underdogs, the cards that are, at first glance, unplayable pack filler, but have actually managed to see relevance at some point. To get onto this list, a card had to see a top in at least one big event, if not more, as well as being generally bad overall.

The Red/Green "terrible" Spiders deck that won a major tournament was because that tournament was Ice Age Block or something like that. Including a number of sets with very bad cards, and people were trying to win that format with bad versions of necropotence decks and aggro decks with little 2/2 first strike knights, which get owned all day by 2/3 spiders and stormbind :) Black and red also had a very hard time getting rid of enchantments at the time.

Honestly, there were a few (emphasis of few) cards from Homelands that were halfway decent Zackkelley2940 presented a list, here are some more that I saw actually see some real action: - Truce: W2 Sorcery that allows each player to draw 2 cards. For each card they dont draw, they gain 2 life. This is good for White Aggro Decks that go wide because they need any way to reload their hand - Eron the Relentless: RR3, 5/2, Haste, RRR Regenerate. It's usually used as a finisher by Red Aggro decks... and that regenerate does make it harder to kill most of the time. - Apocalypse Chime: 2, Artifact. 2, tap, sacrifice Chime, destroy all permanents from the Homelands Expansion. Yea... its... a dumb card... but it made it in sideboards thanks mainly to Ishan Shade and Autumn Willow. Both these cards are real win-cons that were hard to deal with... and the Chime provided universal sweeper that can get rid of those cards, something decks like Blue and Red severely lack. - Spectral Bears: G1, 3/3, when this card attacks, if defending player does not control a black permanent, it does not untap during your next untap step. Its an above rate card, and even today its still a pretty good rate. That drawback is real, tho, so its still used sparingly - Primal Order: GG2 Enchantment. During each player's upkeep, this card deals X Damage to them, where X = number of non-basic lands they control. I think this is one of the very few cards from that set that has gotten better ... esp now that everyone and their mothers run a critical mass of non-basics and... yea... that's pretty much all i can think of I am a little surprised tho, that 2 cards: Feroz's Ban and Willow Priestess hasnt been abused by... anything yet. The Ban is a 6 mana artifact that increases the mana cost of all creature spells by 2... and the Priestess' 1st ability allows you to tap it to sneak any Fairy permanent from hand to play. Is it bec of their mana cost (priestess cost GG2 for a 2/2 btw)

Ironclaw Orcs - what specifically made it good is that it was a 2drop. In one of the first decks that actually cared about the mana curve. Earlier decks would often just play the best cards and don’t worry about having nothing to do in the first few turns. Mono red Sligh however wanted to play the best available spell at every mana value and for 2, that happened to be Ironclaw Orcs.

I had to look up the deck list for Red-Green Spiders, and if the deck I found is correct, the only way it could have won is through complacency of the opponent. All of the cards (such as those listed in the video, Orcish Cannoneers, and Storm Shaman) are...kinda bad but fine, so most opponents wouldn't bother wasting their counter magic/removal on those and save it for the real threats, only for the real threats to never come. It was definitely in vintage dredge at one point when they ran bloodghast. The thing about dredge is that undiscovered paradise is perfect for it. You almost never need more than 1 mana for the deck because your sideboard of artifact, enchantment, and creature removal to get rid of annoyances will be 0 or 1 mana at most. Only time you played 2 mana spells in dredge was in extended in the mid 2000's because of the lack of options compared to vintage and legacy where you had people casting life from the loam and tolarian winds.

the green red spiders deck topped a pro tour where the format was ice age block constructed, which was a 2 set format featuring ice age and alliances, pretty much any potential deck that would have won that event would have recieved "shittiest deck to top a pro tour" looking through the card pool, the shitty spider deck was probably the strongest aggro strategy possible in the format, featuring lots of repeatable burn and trying to play 3 drops on 2 with fyndhorn elves while being amazingly positioned vs pretty much every other possible creature strategy by nature of lots of repeatable removal and being resilient to pyroclasm for potential red mirrors, unfortunately only 2 of the decklists have survived that i've been able to find, being the spiders deck and a 4 color control list that just got completely run over in finals, theres actually live footage of the match if you were to look through youtube which is cool ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1aKNP0qiPrg.html

I’m pretty sure that even without the 5 cards quotum, Serrated Arrows is a card decks wanted to play, at least SB, because of the 2/1 protection pump knights that were quite prevalent during that time. It’s far from bad in the perspective of that era, which is how these cards should be assessed I guess (otherwise by today’s standards almost everything would be bad). Now, cards like Lantern of Insight or Codex Shredder would seem to fit the description much better because they are actually almost useless unless you have a very specific plan with them.

I run Pyromancer's Goggles in my Big Mana Zaffai EDH deck. The initial cost is steep (in big mana what isn't) but once it hits the board it quickly starts pouring out value, especially with how many Izzet cards both remove and draw cards at the same time. One extra blue mana and an instant/sorcery discount can let it drop a double Prismari Command or Flame of Anor the same turn it's played, too.

I wonder how often we get players who are so good at manipulation that they can turn any 'random discard from hand' into 'discard exactly what I need to discard at this time'. Also, it's weird to think but if MTG had kept the '5 cards from every set' rule for long enough and survived doing so, that would actually be regarded as a beloved quirk of the game today instead of raw greed. I think that says a lot about the playerbase.

During it's time, Ishan's Shade (Black) was a real threat thanks to what Logs already mentioned in this video (prot from color, being black, big booty), so that's one Autumn Willow (Green) was a legitimate threat during that time: 6 mana for a 4/4 with Shroud that can be turned into Hexproof provided you paid 1 green mana in the turn you want to target her with spells, was unheard of during her time. She was a legit win-con for decks that love to slap her with auras Truce (White) was a sorcery for W2 that gave each player the option to draw 2 cards, or gain 2 life for each card they DONT draw. Not the best, but it does still help the White Aggro players reload their hand so its an option Eron the Relentless (Red) was a RR3 5/2 creature with Haste and RRR: Regenerate. This was used by red aggro to finish off opponents since that thing coming down usually meant the enemy has taken a beating already Merchant Scroll (Blue) was a U1 sorcery that allows you to tutor any Blue instant or sorcery ... till this day this card is still being used Memory Lapse (Blue) was a U1 instant (then it was an "interrupt) that counters a spell but returns on top of owner's deck instead of graveyard. Till fairly recently, the card has seen play thanks to its hard counter effect and it's flexible mana cost (unlike, say, Mana Leak where you can stop the leak if you had extra 3 mana, making it less useful in the late game), but im sure other newer counterspells have beaten it by now Spectral Bears (Green) was a G1 3/3 bear creature that, unless defending player controls a black permanent, does not untap as normal after declaring an attack. While that drawback is real, that rate is still pretty good and worth running by green aggro at the time. Apocalypse Chime (Artifact) was 2 mana artifact that you can pay 2, tap and sacrifice it to destroy all cards from the Homelands expansion. Yea, it's... pretty dumb, but it DID find its way into sideboards to deal with Ishan's Shade and Autumn Willow. It was mainly for players who have no access to mass sweeping spells. Those are all the cards I can think of...

The problem with Battle of Wits is that you can't really play it in a tournament. The tournament rules require you to be able to randomize your deck without assistance, and unless you can hold half your deck in each hand to do a mash shuffle, you're not going to be able to randomize it in a reasonable amount of time. Even if you do have freakishly large hands, the requirement of your opponent to shuffle your deck is still going to cause a problem.

Gotta find an Undiscovered Paradise for my Landfall decks. Played Ihsan's Shade on a deck with Kerrick, it's surprising to see how many decks get screwed in commander thanks to protection. Stormbind was a fine card to have in decks that could draw a bunch of cards (Like Tovolar werewolves) and could have leftover cards to pitch for additional damage, turning every card from your hand in a Shock wasn't exactly a weak ability. Ironclaw Orcs and all of its successor variants like Goblin Raider occupied the 2-mana slot for mono red aggro decks, I remember playing some of those cards in early decks until I got my hands on a playset of Blood Knight in Planar Chaos, that card looked absurdly powerful after a lifetime of mediocre 2-mana red critters. Pilgrim's eye is one of those cards that finds its way in many casual decks because it offers some much needed mana fixing for colors that aren't green, and the body has its uses too. And I remember using a full playset of Arrows in an old gree-blue casual deck I made from the older creature type the Spikes, a bunch of slug-like creatures that could bounce their +1/+1 counters around, the arrows were basically the only actual way to kill creatures in those two colors if they get past counterspells, not to mention that Arrows might have some uses in commander decks that use cards with Proliferate.

I get that Magic is a much slower game than Yugioh, but how would you even get the mana to draw into one of four Battle of Wits, have enough to play it, and still have at least 200 cards in the deck by that point? I can't be the only one who thinks the Stormbind art looks like a screenshot from some 80s cartoon. Also, I don't know how to feel about someone winning an event with what sounds like a hilariously bad deck.
@PinkPajamas464
@PinkPajamas464 5 месяцев назад
Battle of Wits decks are usually built with 230-240 cards in their deck, so you have 30-40 cards to play with until Battle of Wits no longer works. You can stuff your deck full of cards that search for it, but more commonly it ends up being a secondary plan that your deck does somewhere around 5-10% of the time. The fact that you have such a high deckbuilding cost for a win condition that doesn't happen often, and also has a high mana cost, is what makes it not very good.

Yeah you mostly couldn't rely on BoW consistently as a wincon. Sure you had some tutors for it like enlightened tutor, but it's so much less likely to draw. IIRC someone on the SCG circuit ran battle of wits in legacy and got to put it into play off an opponents show and tell, but I could be wrong that was a long while ago. Shuffling that monstrosity of a deck makes my hands hurt just thinking about it.

Is this a serious video? You can't fairly assess card power unless you consider the specific time that the card was released and used. Serrated Arrows was bonkers, especially in monowhite or monoblack against opposite color pump knights which had protection against your color (Order of Leitbur, for example). It was colorless removal, which was practically nonexistent at that point (other than Aeolipile). It also wrecked Ball Lightning. Ironclaw Orcs were a fine 2 drop in early sligh since the creature pool was so limited. Stormbind was played in aggro decks that dumped their hand and could then turn every land drawn into 2 damage. It was nuts. There's literally no way to argue that these cards were bad in the time period that they were released and played.

None of these cards are bad objectively. They're all good in the right deck. As an example, one of my primary goals in the game is to not take damage. In formats like Commander(multiplayer or 1v1), a card like Undiscovered Paradise enables a more flexible mana base that doesn't get sacrificed or deplete, and allows me to get key things off early, to where I'd have to wait otherwise. Great for 3+ color decks that don't want to sacrifice life. Also super bad to use damage and life loss cards when you're playing a card that hurts you more from that life loss(ie. Lich's Mastery). None of these cards are bad, they're just not the most effecient possible cards, therefore they're labeled "bad".
@fernandobanda5734
@fernandobanda5734 5 месяцев назад
What card is bad "objectively"? Almost every card with any text is going to have weird situations where it's "good" and the only way to say a card is good or bad is to compare it with others.
@BoyGamer100
@BoyGamer100 5 месяцев назад
@@fernandobanda5734 That was part of my point. The only thing I could think of are useless cards with old mechanics that don't work anymore, but that's it. Every card is useful somewhere. There are however, objectively worse cards to play. Like in Legacy or Vintage, playing a cancel over a Counterspell, mana drain, or force of negation/will. But, in Standard, Historic, etc., Cancel is the default Counterspell that counters everything and is used. It's just a worse pick in some formats, but not "bad".
@fernandobanda5734
@fernandobanda5734 5 месяцев назад
@@BoyGamer100 My point is saying "These cards aren't bad" does nothing for these kind of top videos. If every card is equally defensible, then we really can't say anything.
