Napoleon belongs on this list, IMHO. It's so inaccurate that the audience knows less about Napoleon after they see it than they did before. It's slow, focuses on elements nobody cares about, and is actually going to destroy the historic epic because the studios refuse to blame themselves or their writers/directors so they will conclude that audiences must not want to see historic epics instead of the reality that this is the worst historic epic ever made.
Yes! Napoleon was the worst movie I saw in 2023 (it was someone else's idea and I haven't seen any of the movies on this list, to be fair). It's the first movie I've watched in a long time that really felt like a struggle to sit through. I was counting the minutes towards the end there. I love Vanessa Kirby though- hoping her next film is better.
@@rebeccag8589 Vanessa Kirby gave a great performance, as usual. Unfortunately few people went to this movie wanting to know about Josephine to the extent they focus on her. It's completely inaccurate as well, their relationship.
@@Heathcoatman Vanessa Kirby was definitely the best part of the movie. But there's only so much you can do with not great writing or directing. I read an interview with Phoenix, a week before filming, in which he shared he still had no idea what he was going to do in terms of acting with Napoleon. I feel like that's not a great sign? I like him in other things but he was almost sleep walking through this.
@@rebeccag8589 agreed. There are plenty of sources he could have looked at to get an idea. I would think his goal would be to act just like Napoleon did. Instead he went with brooding simp, nothing like the real guy.
I think Infinity Pool is a love it or hate it movie. I hated it right up until the moment I realized why the lead characters were acting so irresponsibly and then I was hooked. I thought about this rather creepy movie for quite a while after leaving the theater, and to me, that's a sign of a good movie.
I think Winnie the Pooh Blood and Honey wasn't consider the worst because people don't take that movie seriously, but I'm pretty sure it will make it into the Razzie Award nominations 😅
I really liked "Infinity Pool". I think Brandon Cronenberg did his father proud with this film. I didn't think it was as good as his previous film, "Possessor", but I found it thoroughly intriguing and idiosyncratic just the same.
There's only two Exorcist movies that exist in my mind. The original classic and the underrated The Exorcist 3. Everything else rightfully so should be ignored. The way Believer wasted Ellen Burstyn is just disrespectful, pure desperate, and a giant marketing scam. I can't believe Universal and Blumhouse paid $400 million to buy the rights, god knows if they ever continue it for their planned sequel trilogy given the Believer is already a failure 🤷
The Hunger Games was one of my favorites this year. I agree it dragged a bit in the 3rd act, but as a fan of the books and films I thought it was a great ride.
Agreed, I don't know much about the Hunger Games but this one worked for me nonetheless, I like the unconventional structure as well, it's like 3 episodes of a mini series as a movie and I'm fine with that, I've come to prefer TV over movies a long time ago, there's so much lost when stories are stripped down to fit into the typical Hollywood mold. I can't take movies seriously anymore that try to sell me the usual hero's journey bull, this one had something more interesting to say about the kind of men that land on top and it's well worth the watch regardless of whether you're a ya fan. I've remarked somewhere else that many historical biographies (or even some fictional stories of "heroes") could benefit from a more critical treatment, these men got to tell their own stories and glorify their ambitions, Coriolanus Snow's autobiography might be similar to those of people we consider "great men" and who they really were might also be closer to him than we like.
I thought it was too short. It needed an hour more to include everything it needed and properly develop all the dynamics. Still, for its length as a theatrical movie, it adapted the book beautifully.
I still cannot believe David Gordon Green disrespected Ellen Burstyn like that. I loved his Halloween trilogy(especially Ends 😮) but was aware of the divisive opinions from fans, I was still hopeful that I would at least enjoy The Exorcist: Believer.... you don't do that to a legend like Ellen Burstyn or her amazing character Chris... now that he's left as a director hopefully the studio will just put that to bed and let us forget it
Gotta say Brian, Dicks the musical really worked for me. It’s absurd, cringey, and strange, but I was honestly impressed with the audacity. Is it high art? Absolutely not, but it made my friend and me laugh a fair bit. Fun fact about it: it started out as an off-broadway show written by and starring the two leads. The two of them played all the roles, and it went to some fringe festivals where it did pretty well. Sort of a cult hit in that way. It gives me some hope as an aspiring writer that little oddities like that can get made. Also, one of the leads lives near me and I’ve seen him on the train several times. Really lovely guy. That’s all! Love your videos and absolutely respect your opinion!
Well, clearly these are the worst ones you actually saw 'cause there are way way worse films out there than many of these ... I would say that half of these are more like the most disappointing films rather than the worst. And I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks that The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes should not be on a worst films list, not by a long shot!! I didn't particularly like Haunted Mansion, but it's far from the worst I've seen... if THAT's your 2 most painful hours, you sure have a FAB life Brian!!
Just wanted to comment to say I’ve been binging your videos. I’ve never been into awards shows before and you’ve not only gotten me excited about watching the races this year, I’ve been catching up on so many great movies from over the decades. Thank you for the excellent content, humor and passion!
Indiana Jones 5 was really bad. It was so bad that it made me appreciate Indiana Jones 4. I hope it doesn’t get a nod for Visual Effects cause it looked like crap. It so bad that it makes Shin Godzilla visuals perfect.
The theater was half-full when I saw it. By the third act, most of the kids in the audience were out in the lobby on their phones. Not like the old days. But I gave it ⭐⭐ out of ⭐⭐⭐⭐.
Pretty bad selections, but at least you haven’t seen: Rebel Moon: Part 1 Winnie the Pooh: Blood & Honey Life Upside Down Pain Hustlers Ghosted Police State The Pope’s Exorcist Those were….oof…
I was super excited about Foe when it was announced but i have to say, it was the first movie in a long time i did not watch till the end . Even if I don't like a film I can mentally check out and just waste my time but i was so confused, bored and upset about the fact that the Ronan-Mescal due was wasted (for me at least) I couldn't finish it .
I saw it at a film festival screening and was confused/disappointed as well. Especially since i am rooting for an Oscar for Ronin. Hopefully Blitz/The Outrun is a better opportunity for Ronan.
Since I was a small child (I am old as dirt now) Haunted Mansion has always been my favorite ride at Disneyland. Deep in my soul I relish the fact that both movie versions were a flop. It is a Karmic Bitch Slap to Disney for changing the original theme of the ride with the Nightmare Before Christmas bullshit every year.
I find it so fascinating how films hit with differently. I really loved Songbirds and Snakes, both the book and the film and I really enjoy Part 3 of it, as ultimately that's where you truly see what he'll do for power and it's his story across the 3 parts. Plus I thought Tom Blyth was fantastic. But that's the beauty of film, different things appeal to different people.
I'm surprised hunger games is here, I really really liked that one. And haunted mansion was solid imo. I don't get the hate for true believer. I think people walking in wanting a good sequel movie were disappointed, but if you go in just treating it like another horror movie it's fine.
I actually kind of enjoyed The Flash but there’s no way I’d ever try to defend it. If you or anyone else hates it I totally understand where you’re coming from. It’s pretty dumb but I enjoyed it.
TOP 10 WORST MOVIES OF 2023: 1. Shotgun Wedding 2. Vacation Friends 2 3. After Everything 4. Knights Of The Zodiac 5. The Exorcist: Believer 6. Five Nights At Freddy's 7. Mafia Mamma 8. Book Club: The Next Chapter 9. Pain Hustlers 10. Hypnotic
I completely disagree about hunger games. It was actually my number 10 Movie of the year. I would’ve like to see it get nominated for costumes, cinematography, production design, and lead actor/actress performances by Rachel Zegler , and Tom Blyth
"Who is this made for" *raises hand* Me, Dicks the Musical was absolutely made for me because I was sobbing with laughter when I saw it earlier this year in a crowded theatre (and I wasn't alone, everyone there seemed to be having the best time), it's definitely not a film for everyone but for those who it's meant for it's absolutely glorious
That’s a rather shallow redemption, isn’t it though? I mean, I hate the Orange Menace as much as the next guy but still… then I haven’t seen the movie so who knows.
I love watching and listening to you get increasingly more frustrated as you approach number one. 😂 I was lucky enough not to have paid any extra money to go see Exorcist Believer in theaters but wait to be disappointed in the comfort of my own home. It definitely should have been a straight to streaming film.
The first time I have to say "wow, you are so wrong". Infinity Pool was pretty damn good. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is a brilliant novel, arguably the best in the series, and the movie is probably the best of the movies as an adaptation (though it would be better if it was a miniseries and could include at least an hour more so it wouldn't exclude so much). "Too long" is a funny complaint when I felt it was too short and have to leave out too much from the book. BTW Mockingjay is my other favorite novel in the series. I feel like "Catching Fire is the best" is the default answer of people who actually don't like The Hunger Games and aren't invested in the universe and the themes.
I hated FAIR PLAY, not the throwback to 90's thrillers as some critics pointed: a dull, very meh melodrama. EXORCIST BELIEVERS an insulting hot mess with a terrible cast and story and poor direction. Oh and I really disliked INDIANA JONES: AND THE DIAL OF THE GERIATRIC UNIT.
Napoleon was my worst pick for worst movie of the 2023. . Can't believe they made a flop of a movie about such a powerful historical figure boring af. I fell asleep hard🤦♀️
1. Spiderman was the only superhero movie I watched this year. Every other one looked like trash and I'm sure I'm right. 2. Hunger Games was fantastic! 3. Pooh was the worst 4. Joy Ride was the most disappointing, unfunny comedy of the year.
I think Infinity Pool was one of the best movies of 2023 and I think it already has a cult following!!! Def not got everyone but it’s definitely not gonna be forgotten by many
I am mad that the people who made Five Nights At Freddie’s making toys for little children should go to jail! My eight year old nephews were asking for the toys about this movie.
Love your candor and drama, Brian! Fortunately, I did not see any of these. Unlike you, I am not a fan of the horror genre. Give me 1960's "Psycho" any day. Keep up the great work as always. It is refreshing to see you, a "young' (to me, anyway) movie critic who is so knowledgeable yet unpretentious and totally professional.
I am really annoyed you listed Infinity Pool but not Killers of the Flower Moon, when they are conceptually the same movie. The story of rich whites blatant abuse and exploitation of other human beings, with a strong female performance holding it together. At least with Infinity Pool it ended way sooner, I didn’t have to look at Leo’s stupid scowl every scene, and the director didn’t insert himself at the end to spite an entire genre he famously bagged on.
I was shocked to see your #1. Being that The Marvels was not on the list I thought for sure it was The Marvels! I actually enjoyed The Flash and your #1, which I won't spoil in the comment section.
Why is it that we call film “ a directors medium” and we recognize editing with awards at the highest level AND STILL we mention the ACTORS when we don’t like it? Let’s call out the actual people responsible for the fail! Mention, by name, editors, screen plays, diresctors so we know who to blame for the performances of the actors and the composition of the movie. We all KNOW these actors and know their talents. They are delivering the lines and their parts as the director has demanded that they do.
What about Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, Knights of the Zodiac, Expend4bles or My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3? Those were really awful. And I also thought The Hunger Games prequel and The Flash are medium movies, not really that bad.
2023 was a bad year for movies AND tv shows. I couldn't agree more, particularly when it comes to that dreadful Exorcist disaster. Why does Hollywood keep destroying once successful and beloved shows and movies? Star Wars fans had to suffer a lot in 2023, but even Scooby Doo fans got punched in the face by Velma. I really hope 2024 will be better.
2023 was a phenomenal year for movies. It was extremely hard to make my top 10 this year. It was a terrible year for franchise movies so if that’s all you watch then I can understand why you would think this year was so bad but there were so many great movies this year.
I see where you’re coming from, but this has been a phenomenal year for movies (I don’t watch a ton of tv so I can’t speak to that). So many of the best directors working today released new films and we also got some stunning debuts. I didn’t see most of the major blockbusters, but even if they weren’t good, that doesn’t mean it was a bad year for movies. Compared to how 2024 is looking, 2023 was one of the best years in recent memory.
I think this might be the only list I've seen so far where The Hunger Games TBSaS is on a top 10 worst of the year. It was on my top 20 best of the year!!
I don’t watch a lot of new movies (my Letterboxd list had to include tv specials to even make it to 31) but I wasn’t too hot on Ferrari. It’s not bad per say, but it didn’t leave me with anything outside of a few good sequences.
This was MY least favorite movie of the year (although I haven't seen any of the films on this list). It was painful to sit through. I really like Vanessa Kirby too. I'm hoping her next film is better.
how is Priscilla not on this list? that film has literally no driving force behind the plot, 0 point of view from the director, horrible performances, and the scenes which supposedly are intended to make the audience feel bad for Priscilla come and go with little to no attention...
I love seeing one of my favorite films of a given year appear on someone else's "worst" list and vice versa. It gives me comfort in knowing that there are still real movie fans out there who go against popular opinion with their own honest feelings. Also, thanks to this list, I must now find a means to watch 'Dicks: The Musical'.
The worst movies to me are: movies 10. May December 9 Priscilla 8 Poor Things 7 Anatomy Of A Fall 6. The Killer 5. Maestro 4. Meg. 2 3 Aqua Man 2 Smile 1 Salt burn
Decent year for comic book movies. Most of which were better than Spider-Man: Across the Spider Verse. I enjoyed Ant-Man Quantumania, Murder Mystery 2. The rest of the list I either did not like as well or have not seen.
The last 10 to 20 minutes of Foe kind of sweetened my experience watching it a little bit for the suddenly surprising interest I had for the twist, yet they still could not save my distaste for the bore I had watching the entire film before then. Paul Mescal and Saoirse Ronan, though, were freaking amazing as always.
