I don't think "Rascals" deserved to be listed as one of the worst episodes and here's why-- Although the takeover of the ship was, indeed, rather weak, the Very Strong Performances by the children portraying the officers, totally carried that episode!

Rascal has as a redeeming quality the amazing acting of two of the children: I always forget that 10-years-old Guinan and Ro are played by different actors than their adult version because these child actors play the adult characters so perfectly. That's incredible continuity for acting split between different actors ! On the other hand, the characterization of older admiral Whatsisname in Too Short a Season is truely cringeworthy.

I like that Rascals actually uses a bunch of info from the Star Trek TNG: Technical Manual. All that stuff Number-One-Dad confuses the Ferengi with, he's not making it up, he's simply explaining the computer in the most complex and obfuscated manner he can. As in, imagine someone trying to force you to teach them how to operate your Windows computer, and you instead teach them about BIOSes and IRQs and extension (PCI-E etc) cards and the x86-64 programming instruction set.

Joel Ellis That and the episode that questioned Picard having a son though kind of negates the idea of why having Stewart play the part. The idea by the t8ime TNG no one cared about a bald captain. In the lead up yo the first episode it wass stated wouldn't they have a cure for baldness by then and Stewart said by then no one would care. Then they go about making episode we he cares about it.

I love the way the crew tries to apply multicultural analysis to the aliens, "We have to respect their culture and in the context of their traditions, we need to... yadda yadda yadda," and as a result, they totally miss what's actually going on; Dude just wants to off his wife so he can inherit her wealth.

Hey, in “The Host,” why was everyone so shocked to learn about Trill symbionts? The Trill had been in regular contact with Earth for well over a century, and Curzon Dax was one of the Federation’s top diplomats when the _Enterprise_ was still under Kirk.
@Paulafan5
@Paulafan5 6 лет назад
It may have been a fact they kept from outside species and made people like Sisko and Kor keep it a secret until it was exposed to the galaxy. I think Sisko knew Curzon Dax before that episode since he was mentored by Curzon years before that episode would have taken place.
@aperson22222
@aperson22222 6 лет назад
Paulafan5 When Sisko is reunited with Dax in “Emmissary,” she says she’s been worried about him since his wife died. That was almost a full season before “The Host,” and what’s more, it’s very clear that was Curzon. It’s not at all apparent that there was anything special about Sisko that made him more likely to keep a secret than anyone else, and being selectively secretive isn’t going to work.

The Host states that Trill can't use transporters or they will die. So it would be pretty hard to keep their nature a secret for 100 years. I guess DS9 had better transporters than the Enterprise-D?
@dfuebermann1
@dfuebermann1 5 лет назад
The main issue is that the DS9 writers didn't want to go with established lore. They just did their own thing and said to hell with it all. They also didn't like the way Terry looked in the original Trill makeup so they decided to find a sexier species to mimic from TNG, and ended up choosing the Kriosian metamorph (played by Famke Janssen). I get hate all the time for saying it but I think DS9 was a horrid Star Trek series. It would have been much better as a standalone SciFi series.

@@theonlymatthew.l I think the point was much more than bringing "herself to kiss someone with a female form"... let's not kid ourselves, rapidly romantically acclimatising yourself with the changing of one's aspect and sex (both as someone very familiar who you had no prior romantic intent and as a opposite sex of the initial male form... who she probably had steamy steam hot sex with) is not as straight cut as calling it "not inclusive"... or remotely easy, even hypothetically. I didn't think Genesis was a bad episode but it was season 7 toward the end when the cast was pretty much mailing in their performances. As for Conundrum, what made that episode bad was the horrible plot holes. I mean, a race of aliens who didn't have the weaponry to take out their mortal enemy were able to penetrate the Enterprise's shields, rewrite the ships computer to put in bogus orders and mission details, wipe the memories, only selectively, of every crew member including Data, was able to place one of their own onto the Enterprise bridge and emulate a human crewman not to mentioning knowing everything about Starfleet and their hierarchy. I mean, they had this technology and yet their weapons weren't any better than lasers? That would be like Aborigines developing computers and a force field who's greatest weapon is a blow gun.

Conundrum was OK, but it was made at a time when Trek had gone to the everything-you-know-is-wrong mindfuck well one too many times, so it felt sort of like creative exhaustion. If it had landed in season 1 or 2 it would have been great. Genesis was, in hindsight, an advance warning of the Star Trek: Voyager episode where they go infinitely fast and turn into salamanders and make salamander babies.

As someone who was a kid when TNG aired, I still have found feelings for "Rascals." Granted, even then I thought the fact that they transporter doing this (and then reverting later) was absurd, it pulled me in. Yes, I get it, the Ferengi never should have been able to take over the Enterprise (a group of 8? overpowering a crew of over 1,000?!), but one could say that about a lot of plots holes through out the series(es?). Then of course as I grew up, I kept wondering, "When are they going to use the transporter to reverse aging? Old Picard dying of a disease in the last episode? Just beam him younger like what happened previously!!!" Okay, yeah, I'm not a fan of "All Good Things."

Not surprisingly, most were from the first two seasons when TNG was trying to find itself as opposed to being a TOS ripoff. As to "The Host," what sank that episode was that nobody else in the Federation knew that the Trill are symbiotic beings despite having been Federation members for two centuries. Surely everybody in Starfleet, and especially Starfleet doctors, would be aware of it, and yet Dr. Crusher wasn't? Doesn't say much for her professional competence.

@Helbore 6 лет назад
The status of the Trill is a retcon, though. This was their first appearance in Star Trek. There's no evidence they were even members of the Federation in "The Host," and they made out they were very secretive about their nature to outsiders. It also seemed clear that the Symbiant was in total control and the personality of the host was completely overwhelmed by it (more parasitic than symbiotic in nature) DS9 completely retconned the species, having Sisko being best buds with a Trill for years and Dax having been around in the Federation in TOS days. Add in the blending of personalities and the totally different makeup and they may as well have been a different species!

You left out the worst episode of all. It's the one with Worf's Russian brother where Picard's fealty to the prime directive is taken to the ludicrous extreme of allowing a planet full of people to die to avoid contaminating them! My God, the directive is intended to protect alien cultures, not exterminate them. No problem violating the directive to save Wesley though. Where's Kirk when you need him?

@jasoncrane1928
@jasoncrane1928 2 года назад
I understand what you are saying Patrick, but despite Picard's lack of continuity in adhering to the prime directive, on this occasion he made the right decision. If it was this cultures fate to be destroyed by solar flares, if my memory is correct, then humans had no right to interfere. However he did allow Wesley to save the planet where Data contacted the little girl, despite the destruction being natural. It is Picard who is wrong here, not the directive. The directive is not supposed to protect alien cultures, it was created and implemented to ensure that civilisations evolution is not corrupted by interference from individuals or organisations feeling like playing god.
@patrickflynn607
@patrickflynn607 2 года назад
@@jasoncrane1928 Thanks for the respectful debate, but we'll have to agree to disagree. In "Errand of Mercy" Kirk explains that the prime directive is meant to protect growing, evolving cultures and decided that since the Organians were not such a culture, interference was warranted. The prime directive has the altruistic intent of protecting the evolution of alien cultures from external interference that would impact their development. Allowing their extermination is at odds with this altruistic intent. Saving them from destruction would allow, not interfere with, their normal development. The Wesley episode I was referring to was the one where he was sentenced to death and Picard was prepared to violate the prime directive to save him. Allowing the death of millions or billions of people because of blind faith that interference MAY be worse seems to me to stand the intent of the directive on its head. I wish some advanced alien culture had chosen to interfere with my planet in the thirties and forties. (Of course that's a completely different debate, i.e. is the prime directive a good idea in the first place, but I digress.) However, in choosing to violate it to save one person and then inflexibly adhering to it to allow a planet full of people to die is why when someone asks me, "Kirk or Picard" I always answer "KIRK!".
@jasoncrane1928
@jasoncrane1928 2 года назад
@@patrickflynn607 It is good to have a debate Patrick, but I think in your reply you have agreed with me. In Errand Of Mercy Kirk was not violating the Prime Directive at all, as the Organians knew about warp drive and other alien species already (the Klingons were in contact for a long period of time), so the PD does not apply. Just because the Organians chose to live without technology that does not mean the PD applies to them, because they knew about the two primary reasons for the non interference directive. Picard did violate the Prime Directive on numerous occasions (have a look at the episode Pen Pals). The protection that the Prime Directive covers, is not from natural disasters or actions that have evolved naturally, it is from the affect of having access to technology which a culture may not be ready to deal with and also the appearance of aliens from other worlds.

Up the Long Ladder and Rascals are actually two of my favorite episodes. I always enjoy stories that contrast people living a traditional, non technological, lifestyle, with high tech cultures. I always find them interesting. And, an important point, the two colonies were *not* on the same planet. The problem involving the impending solar flare was resolved once the Bringloidie were evacuated from their planet. The other, high tech colony, had a very different problem involving limited genetic diversity, to which the Bringloidie provided the solution. Personally, I find the Bringloidie characters, and culture, to be very interesting and entertaining. I wouldn't at all have minded having them back again. The only thing I don't like about Rascals is having Picard relinquish command just because he looks like a twelve year old. The whole poiojt of the Federation is that people have become comfortable with other people who look and act differently. There is no reason the crew would have been unable to continue respecting Picard's authority just because he looked young. In every grown man beats the heart of a ten year old boy who longs to command the USS Enterprise in a desperate battle. That is how this episode should have ended, with the rejuvenated Picard commanding in a fire fight. The rest of the ones you mention, yeah, they're pretty bad. The trouble is, it's so easy to pick out others just as bad. How in the world did you winnow it down to these? How about the Naked Now? How about the where everybody reverts into evolutionary ancestors, with Barkley somehow turning into a spider? How about the painfully bad one where Riker violates the prime directive so he can have sex with a person from a unisexual species who somehow thinks it's female? Encounter at Farpoint, Tinman, the one where Q put everybody into a Robin Hood fantasy. The list, unfortunately, goes on. When TNG was good, it was very good, though never as good as TOS at its best, but when TNG was bad, it was very bad indeed.

I actually tended to enjoy Rascals much more than some of the other TNG episodes. It's memorable, and the acting of the kids *almost* sells it at times. I find The Last Outpost, When the Bough Breaks, Skin of Evil, The Royale, Time Squared, and the Outrageous Okana to all be much less enjoyable to watch than Rascals. With regards to the continuity issues with the Trill, that's because Terry Farrell suffers from a skin condition where the makeup would have been bad for her. I'm glad someone else is calling out Star Trek on it's Scottish accents. Scotty's I can kind of forgive as I grew up with it. Though realistically I can't think of a time I've heard anyone sound like they're from Glasgow, Edinburgh, Inverness, or anywhere else over here.
@scotttrammell4299

Paul Walker Time Squared actually would have made more sense had they gone with the original idea. A few weeks after it aired was "Q Who?" When Picard finds himself on the shuttle, he was supposed to watch the Enterprise being sucked into the vortex all over again, at which point Q reveals himself and says that was his little calling card, or something. He was supposed to have created the whole thing to get Picard's attention, but that plot line got dropped because of the writer's strike in 1988. So that left us with a stand-alone episode that makes no sense.

Inheritance; Everyone lying to Dr. Juliana Tainer about her being an android, was horrible and obnoxious, since they left her vulnerable to the trauma of discovering that she's an android and unaware of the advantages of being an android. Remember when Picard told Wesley that "The first duty of every Starfleet officer is to the truth, whether it's scientific truth or historical truth or personal truth! It is the guiding principle on which Starfleet is based." Yet in this episode, they completely go against all of this, because they can't be bothered to help her cope with and adapt to being an android for both her own wellbeing and for others, not to mention putting other people into a hard position. Ironically in the Star Trek Voyager episode "Once upon a time" (Another bad episode that centers on a character lying about something important) Neelix's lie (while bad) is less of a bad call than what Data, the TNG crew and Soong did to Dr. Juliana Tainer. Sirtis' performance is okay, Charles Lucia does a great ambassador, there is some clever plot development with the ambassador's companions and how they all handle the situation apparently civilized and finally, a great confrontational scene with Picard and a classical Steward-monologe. "Skin of Evil" would be a better choice.

The one thing I liked about man of the people is that the ambassador gives Picard his bullshit attempt at moral ambiguity that pops up a lot in other episodes but Picard just says " ... Yeah you're under arrest "

Just about any episode in the first two seasons. (Most of your picks were from the first season after all).

Exactly. This is what I always say to people that piss on Discovery. EVERY Trek series (minus TOS, arguably) took at least two seasons to get off the ground. TNG was awful, DS9 was slow, Voyager was tablescraps and Enterprise needed to find itself. Most argue that Voyager got better when the Borg arrived, and that Enterprise got better when we met the Xindi.

Michelle Lehto - i actually think enterprise started of pretty strong and it is my personal favorite. Though i like Captain Picard the most as captain. I think TNG was pretty good at the start too. It just got WAY better a bit later and made season one look like grabage by comparison.

DS9 is actually the strongest Trek in its first season. Very few awful episodes and the worst crime most commit is being a bit boring. Plenty of stuff from first season episodes of DS9 end up being relevant later on which is hard to say about TNG.

I liked Jameson's speech to his wife "I see only the gold". I actually thought that part was touching.
