The Great Bay temple was much more bearable than the Water Temple in Ocarina of Time. The Zora Mask was a saving grace compared to having to switch the Iron Boots on and off again constantly.
Hey, Hydrocity Zone is actually awesome! You can actually go fast in many parts, and the Bubble Shield makes it even more bearable. As for what I don't like, there's the diving sections in Sly 3 for starters.
Before I clicked on the video, I was saying to myself.... " That damn water level in TMNT." And what do you know??!!! I mean come on, I never beat the game because of that level..
Fuck that game! I only beat the water level two times in my life I don't know how I did it but it was sheer dumb luck but the rest of that game was brutal.
There's that level in Earthworm Jim where you have to mode inside a bubble, but you can't crash or it breaks, and you have a timer too. I hate that level!
The sports games right? I want Nintendo and SEGA (now that they are friends instead of rivals) to make a crossover game of Mario and Sonic: with characters forgotten or remembered (some of the forgotten anyway like Cream the Rabbit).
Cream’s a referee in the original Mario and Sonic and while “Oh, too bad” is better than Referee Toad’s “Blaaah” I still don’t like being red-flagged, especially if I get a Great rating on my jump only to step over the line

I actually liked the Little Mermaid Level in Kingdom Hearts II. I mean sure for a fighting game it lacked things to kill but, sometimes I get tired of killing heartless and just want to do some other stuff in the game. This provided that for me. I like fighting games that offer a little more than fighting for replay value and to unwind from grinding. But, I am different that way I suppose.
I think the worst water based thing in that game wasn't even a level: I get a car and drive it around only to have some dumb driver knock me over a cliff into the water, and I have to swim for miles to find somewhere I can get out. If I'm lucky, I'll get a boat
YES! That ninja turtle level still haunts me! A dishonorable mention I'd have would be some of the water stuff in Amnesia: The Dark Descent. That part where you need to throw meat then jump on boxes and THEN are chased is so damn horrible. Even if you know what you're doing it's frustrating as all get out. Doing that level over and over removed the scary for a bit and was just tedious.
@@het7299 Yeah I use to not be a fan of that level. it can get agitating bouncing back and forth million times. And the goofy circus music playing feels like a taunt almost...like "haha you can't get past this"
If you ask me, Labyrinth Zone isn't quite that bad to play through, since the real frustrating part of the level would have to be the boss fight, which has you chasing after Dr. Eggman to the top of the level while avoiding the obstacles as the water rises, and it's especially frustrating in "Sonic The Hedgehog Genesis" on the GBA.

Great Bay Temple is annoying for sure, but Ocarina's Water Temple is outright bad level design. From the tedium of taking the iron boots on and off constantly, to the water levels needing switched, to the searches for hookshot points, to the most disappointing boss battles in the game. There're plenty of reasons I think most people were expecting the Water Temple on here instead.
I will say that the underwater courses in the Super Mario platformers are on the tolerable side, since you don't have to worry about drowning. For the Sonic the Hedgehog series, however, Sonic's inability to swim, combined with a drowning risk, really make the underwater sections painful to deal with.
The worst water levels in video games that I played were Labyrinth Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog 1, and the jet-ski levels in Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped.
I know it was a dishonorable mention, but I actually enjoyed Rusty Bucket Bay. I thought the mechanics for that level were frustrating, but not impossible. And yes, the difficulty curve shot up, but it made Click Clock Woods so much easier...
I liked the Atlantica level in Kingdom Hearts 2. And nice move on number 1 with a clip with Raphael from the first Ninja Turtles movie. Raphael: Damn! (echos)
The Great Bay Temple was the worst! So bad that I never finished the game! I just got the remastered edition on my 3ds and plan to not give up this time!
Oh god, the Gobul. -_- That was probably the first hunt in my current safe file where I had to fight it with a bowgun (My usual weapon being a sword and shield in MH Tri). I took it down , though. The only hunt I have left to complete before the next star level of quests is the Rathian, which i'm struggling with despite taking down multiple ones in MH4U
One level that was the bane of my existance, was in Medieval (the orignal psx version with sir daniel fortesque). You had narrow pathways, and had to knock these big guys into the water, and was the only way to kill em.
There are some great water levels that are really fun to play. Examples include: -Down The Tubes (Earthworm Jim) -Corsair’s Cove (Pac-Man World) -Sewer Surfing (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtle In Time)
That Ninja Turtles level was such a pain thought I was going to have a heart attack every time...surprised I didn't get a gray hair from it and to make it worse you couldn't save them game!
I would have guessed with a level like the Labyrinth Zone, Sonic couldn't survive in that water, but I think in a perfect world, Sonic would love swimming and always be excited to explore underwater with his own scuba gear on.
I like the concept of KH1 Atlantica though. The controls are pretty simple once you get used to them. But you can always wait until you've completed Hollow Bastion before you go there so you're more experienced when it comes to fighting Ursula.
+SB1292000 Underwater controls in any game are annoying and when you have to fight under water too is another thing. Atlantica in KH2 is nice because it's a break from fighting heartless and just quick times with some awesome Disney songs, I used to not like it but after playing it again in 2.5 I've come to love it xD
Great 1st pick. Probably the most difficult and frustrating level I have ever played... But, it is very dividing because it is a VERY old game that mostly people over 30 have played (such as I).
The worst part about Labyrinth Zone is that Sonic Team knew that stage would piss us off, so they made Act 3 of Scrap Brain into another version of that horrible level. As for Hydrocity, let's face it, that level is a classic and I'm glad it returned in Sonic Mania.
I don't know how many people ever played the Spiderman/Xmen game on SNES, but it had one of the worst water levels ever. Not only was it crappily made and way too hard, but they put Storm in that level... thus you never get to use her weather control powers at all.
Not surprised the Labyrinth Zone from the first Sonic the Hedgehog was on this list. The third act of that zone was the biggest pain in my ass that kept me from clearing the zone in the first place. Not to mention trying to get to the end while chasing Dr. Eggman/Dr. Robotnik.
I feel tmnt dam gets a bad rap. it's only the second level of the game so it's not a huge inconvenience to get back to as far as NES games go also you are given plenty of opportunity to max out your turtle's health. you don't have a lot of room for error butt it's not like we are talking Battletoads here with some practice you should be able to get through the level fine. once you figure out the most efficient path to disarming bombs the worst is over. and when you compare it to the challenges a level 4 and 6 the dam is a cakewalk. Atlantica from Kingdom Hearts 2 should have been the top spot. the original songs are God awful I did like. Under the sea with different voice actors joining in butt it is otherwise a pretty mind-numbing experience. there was a similar music mini game in Birth by Sleep it was pretty bad too
I love crashed frigate orpheon since it has the most calming music in the Metroid series.The one level in Donkey Kong Country 3 was ridiculous since the controls are inverted.
I thought Monster Hunter Tri was awesome. Underwater hunts were more complex and challenging, and I liked having to learn new positioning mechanics with the added verticality of the water. I do wish they made all weapons equally viable underwater though (looking at you Sword and Shield, and later in 3U all ranged weapons, however I did use the Bow to hunt Plesioth exclusively).
Aquas from Star Fox 64. I don't think I've ever restarted a level as much as that one, i think they actually toned it down for the 3ds version and it's still really annoying.
I once had a game that was Spiderman and the X Men that involved a level where Storm, the claustrophobic one, had to swim through an underwater level and could not use her powers and was on a timer before she ran out of oxygen. I still have nightmares.
I can't believe you left out the minus world in Super Mario Bros. That level is literally impossible to beat because when you enter the pipe at the end, it resets you back to the beginning.
Its not a full level, but the one Spyro egg challenge where you swim down the tunnel with the bad guys and you have to avoid them and the mines while being forced down a relentless current in order to reach the end just for 1 egg. Horrible as a kid and still frustrating now.
I agree with watchmojo on the zelda water temples, the water temple from ocerina of time might have been confusing, but the great bay temple was confusing and has annoying water currents! Seriously the 3 day timer did not help at all!
Actually surprised Spider-Man/X-Men Arcade's Revenge isn't on here. Just because every explosion is unavoidable and it's one of those where the f*** do I go kind of levels. It's actually more frustrating to me than the Dam level of TMNT. Which isn't that difficult if you have patience. I'm not saying it's not deserving of no. 1 cause it is, but X-Men had the more frustrating one in my opinion.
No mention of the Submerged Cavern in Pikmin 2, The Deadly Tank of Neptuna in Croc, or the Atlantis levels in SPY Fox: Hold The Mustard. :( Maybe because those games aren't very well-known by comparison?
Labyrinth zone was annoying but the robotnik fight can be made easy. Just focus on getting to the top and dont worry about attacking robotnik, as it only grants you 1000 points. As long as you make it to the top you will survive, so you can usually ignore him. It made the fight easier for me. Scrap brain zone act 3 was a tough one. Hydrocity zone was my jam, I really enjoy act 1 and 2 of it.
