In Brazil Blue-Eyes is partially responsible for a meme of the anime when Kaiba comes to see grandpa's card. Kaiba says: "Eu vim ver uma carta" Which translates to: "I came to see a card" But because of the phonetics he appears to be saying: "Eu vim ver o macaco" Which translates to: "I came to see the monkey"
Fun fact: The meme "It's Morbius time" was born when the yugituber Rata (Rank 10 YGO) made a tweet, and since this meme was used a Morbillion times is just one of my favorite effects of the YGO community in the rest of the world.
The craziest part is that I actually have a civil suit against Rata because I told him that phrase as a joke, but I went and got it trademarked. He then tweeted it during the trademark process and now we are determining if I have a legitimate claim. Loser forfeits their soul so it’s a big deal.
Not a card but actually the anime itself. In the japanese community there's a running joke about an episode preview going "Will Jonouichi (Joey) win against Marik?" for the whole preview hyping it up, to then end with the title "Jonouichi Dies". There's also jank normal monsters gaining a meme reputation, like Shapesnatch in the TCG and Morinphen in OCG.
Dies to removal is reasonable A:At higher level play, where you generally expect your opponent to have some solves ready, and B:When it's used right. "Dies to removal" has to be something that doesn't do anything immediately, and doesn't have any protection. Original Elesh Norn for example, while it does die if you play a kill spell, will have already wiped your board of toughness 2 or less creatures as soon as she resolved. Wrathing a token player doesn't get undone by killing her.
The biggest meme to come out of YuGiOh is the Trap Card. So many memes of "You activated my Trap Card!" Also on Twitter and other social media, using a print of a Trap card with an Effect like "Play this card when some says something dumb, the target loses any right to there opinion being taken seriously," or something like that.
My favorite Pot of Greed explanation is the one in the Japanese anime when Strings uses it. Because he has Slifer on the field, he makes the explanation needlessly more complicated by explaining how activating Pot of Greed from his hand means he first has 1 card less in his hand, thus reducing Slifer's ATK, before he gets to draw 2 cards with it.
The only other meme I can think of right now is "Free Stratos" from when Stratos was banned despite there being other powerful search cards that weren't, and HEROs desperately needing it to get back into relevancy.
And not to mention for the period of time konami was having stratos-phobia, quite archetypes receive bad stratos Forsake Nebra Disk konami ffs, let this remaining chronomaly player happy
For those who haven't followed Duel links, there's a new skill konami added called Magician's Magic. What it does, For the rest of the duel, you can normal summon/set Dark Magician without the need of tributing monsters.
@@RJA well the skill also lets you search 2 different cards under certain conditions as well, the skills not half bad but it does have a downside where u cant summon dark magician on your opponents turn which means eternal soul is basically useless for that varient
I think Pot of Greed should have also gotten a shoutout to how Konami was giving a TCG Preview of the new Neos Support from Power of the Elements, they had Jaiden and Aster’s dub voice actors read out lines for the duel. And during this duel, they allowed the person playing Jaiden to activate Pot of Greed and had both Dub VAs embrace the meme. With Aster’s VA acting shocked and asking “Pot of Greed?! WHAT DOES THAT CARD DO?!?!” then followed by Jaiden’s VA explaining Pot of Greed’s very complex effect
There's another layer to Normal Summon Aleister. After "Normal Summon Aleister", expect "response Ash/Veiler/Imperm", then "Okay, activate Invocation." indicating that they had Invocation in hand anyway and the negate was wasted. It's been memed into a talent for all Invoked players to have both Aleister and Invocation in hand. You can also extrapolate with Magical Meltdown.
KingOf Grim in Duel Links before Cocytus got banned and Alister, Invokation, & Magicians Navigation were set to 3, I ran it with Dark Magician/Dark Magician Girl and would start with Invoked bosses & finish with Quintet Nuke.
It's a meme from 4 chan where the art of the pieces of exodia are replaced with the most horrific art of hunter shitting into a subway sandwich bun that spyro is making
For exodia's right leg, don't forget "This card is useless" Top 10 cards that are references to non -YGO media ("Do a barrel roll" trap card is a reference to peppy hare's famous line from Star Fox)
I think calling "Exodia" a meme is an understatement, it had such a huge impact on internet culture in general that it has basically become a neologism for "the perfect combination of things that allows one to achieve its goal" in basically any possible context EDIT: You did mention it at the end, Exodia mage is probably the most popular example of this
Laundry dragonmaid is often memed as being friends with Eldlich, and that meme expanded into her interacting with multiple cards outside dragonmaid archetipe. This comes from her effect being more useful in other archetipes since she's kinda unreliable on dragonmaids
Tour Guide from the Underworld: "And the next item of the exhibit, we have Pot of Greed. It has been two thousand years since this card's release, and we still do not know what this card does. Not many copies of this card exist anymore, and the copies that we do have, the effects has been weathered away from the environments not even the time wizard has been able retrieve any information from the past of this mysterious artifact."
i think another one that went unnoticed in this list was "i set one card and end my turn" which is often used as a meme. Although it isn't a card in itself
Nah, the real Aleister meme is when you negate Aleister and then they play the Invocation that was already in their hand. Its like Ashing Pot of Desires, and then they play some much more crucial search card since they were trying to bait the Ash.
In the Duel Links commercial, he does move two monsters from his field to the graveyard, we see his arm moving them, but they haven’t shown any physical cards yet until they switch the angle to him putting DM on the board, so he did pay the cost.
Funny little sidenote: since a few days it's actually possible to (normal) summon Dark Magician without a tribute in duel links, thanks to a new skill for Yugi
Shame there isn't a card based on Being Sent To The Shadow Realm. That is probably the biggest YGO meme across the board, but disqualified from this list due to lack of representation
Honestly, I'm surprised there isn't a card based on "heart of the cards" cause along with the shadow realm it's one of the biggest Yu-Gi-Oh memes that extends outside of the hobby. Cause if it's a card game and you need just one special card to win, your hoping for the heart of the cards. Like I've seen tcg players use it, I've seen people use it in uno, I've seen people use it in online card games. I've seen people use it with regular playing cards. It's that far-reaching.
This is most likely due to how Shadow Realm doesn't exist in the OCG at all since people died instead of going to the shadow realm, however what I find extra funny is that the banish zone in MD is a purple swirl that might as well be "the shadow realm"
@@exalt2674 All I know how to do anymore is Orcust combo, it's been so long. I don't know what a real duel is anymore. The other day, I played True Draco, summoned Dinomight activated Heritage to Summon and turned Ignis and Dino into Phoenix. Everything has become Orcust to me. There are no other cards, no combos other than Mermaid discard eff. The only trap I know how to use is Crescendo. Occasionally I need to summon a Unicorn, and I cry a little. I let people summon their own Mermaids but wish I was summoning mine instead. It's become a joke of sorts, or maybe it's just my life. I can't go anywhere without seeing Orcust combo. I went to feed my cats the other night, but instead of eating i tried to use them both as Link material. I had to put them down. I sit in the corner now counting down the days, the days where we shall see sweet release from this torment, the day when link summoning can make something other than Phoenix Mermaid eff. Those days are long gone. I have seen God, and I have seen the devil, but they are one and the same. I stared into the abyss and screamed “Mermaid discard cost”, and it screamed back: "Ash" The joke is that orcust was meta for so long as a pure deck or engine that every deck was just orcust combo with different coat of paint.
@Exalt Orcust can full combo from mermaid alone, which can be summoned off knightmare phoenix/cerb, so any deck which can put 2 monsters on the field can orcust full combo
#10, its even easier to summon Tribute Monster without tributing. The Spellcard "Ancient Rules" lets you special summon any Tribut Monster from your Hand. Since you get this card easily in Duel links, every player should have it.
Ancient Rules only works on Normal Monsters of level 5 or higher, not "any" tribute monster. If it could summon anything, it would be broken, as you could in the normal TCG summon out a lot of big cards and main deck negates. But sadly, Ancient Rules is only for Normals, so at best it's a budget summon card.
The irony of #10's spot is that, in Duel Links, it now is very much so possible to normal summon Dark Magician with no tributes, thanks to the newest Skill 'Magician's Magic' most likely to receive an errata because they 'accidentally' made it too good, coming out at the same time they offered a new Dark Magician themed structure deck.
@@Deathmare235 That's why it's not considered 'broken'. To me, there's a difference. It's not on the same level that Leo skill was of just free passes with no downsides at ALL would be considered. Compared to other skills with LP requirements or other negatives, it's capable of being worked around.
@@Deathmare235 Oh, also don't forget, just because Dark Magician can't be special summoned doesn't mean the quick-play spell card to fusion summon from the extra deck is off limits. I do believe that's also a piece of what the skill can do for you.

Funny thing to point out about Duel Links in regards to Dark Magician, the meme's now a reality there since there's a new skill all the Yugis have (called Magician's Magic) where during the duel, you can summon Dark Magician on your turn just like the meme; no tribute summons and no need to summon it with cards like Eternal Soul or Magician's Navigation.
Typically, what i've learned when playing against my friend's HERO deck (and mind you: they're a Jaden fanboy, so they don't even mess with Destiny HERO monsters and can still wreck shop) is that they often just try to Dark Law pass going first since its pretty non-committal and can be done under 5 summons. Its either that or Absolute Zero.
Love the editor's notes! Also, not as iconic, but one of my favorite memes is "Share if play!" I think this is a video topic that could definitely come back as a "ten more Yu-Gi-Oh memes"
First, we got normal summon E Hero Noes with Hero Alliance skill. Now we got Normal summon DM with Magician's Magic skill. I Can't wait for the Normal summon the Blue Eyes White Dragon and Red Eyes Black Dragon skills.
Probably also worth mentioning that when people search for the meme template for Dramatic crossroads, since a lot of people don’t even know it’s a YGO anime card, let alone what the name of the card is, there’s probably a list of other names that people will use to search for it, meaning they’ll just assume it’s called something else altogether.
One of my favorites is the Zoodiac copypasta, it's a shame it never got too popular. "All I know what to do anymore is summon drident, it's been so long. I don't know what yugioh is anymore. The other day, I summoned a monster and tried to put cowboy on it. With one material. Everything has become zoodiac to me. There are no other monsters, no spells other than barrage. The only trap i know how to activate is dimensional barrier. Occasionally I send combo to grave, and I cry a little. I attack for game but wish I was being gamed instead. It's become a joke of sorts, or maybe it's just my life. I can't go anywhere without seeing zoo. I went to feed my dog the other night, but instead of eating she summoned a goat from the graveyard with it's effects negated. I had to put her down. I sit in the corner now counting down the days, the days where we shall see sweet release from this torment, the day when xyz summoning was about 2 monsters having a special bond and creating something beautiful. Those days are long gone. I have seen God, and I have seen the devil, but they are one and the same. I stared into the abyss and screamed, and it screamed back: "summon rat effect”."
Danger!? Tsuchinoko? was an intriguing sight on the internet before finding out it's an actual card. And, much like difficult to spot beings from which the Danger!! cards originate, I have yet to spot a meme of it ever since.
Not surprised the "Exodia Obliterate" meme took the top spot. It really is the most defining moment of the start of the entire Yu-Gi-Oh series. I lost a few rounds in a local tournament due to someone running with an "Exodia deck".
The greatest Yugioh meme video is "Dante dodging 3 years of banlists" aka "That Dante banlist video" which is almost 3 minutes of Dante murdering every card that actually ended up banned or limited. ...and it apparently also has a Duel Links version, cool.
When you said Dark Magician and BEWD were the most iconic, I wondered where you'd put Exodia. But then you got to the number 1 entry. Also, thanks to the comments on this video, I learned "morbed all over those guys" blew up with Rata's tweet. I didn't know until today that was another of the many things he has memed into existence.
Secrets of Eternity was released in January 2015. This set introduced the Infernoids, a series of monsters that can Special Summon themselves to the field by banishing other Infernoids from either the hand or graveyard. Notable cards in set include Farfa, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss, Qliphort Monolith, Uni-Zombie, Nephe Shaddoll Fusion, and a card that would bolster Satellarknight to combat the Burning Abyss Shaddoll meta, Stellarknight Constellar Diamond. In this series, both Nyhmnim and myself will be opening 24 booster packs or 1 box of a core Yu-Gi-Oh! booster set. We will build a deck and play a best 2 out of 3, and the winner will receive a small prize to upgrade their deck. HOWEVER! Each episode, we will open another box of the next set that was released moving in chronological order, constantly upgrading our decks before dueling each other at the end of each episode. This is the Yu-Gi-Oh! Progression Series.

⚠️I would like to add, the most unfortunate thing that could have come from the YGO community, whether it was on purpose or not, was "It's Morbing time". I will NEVER forgive Rata for what he did to the world. The phrase of all time really ⚠️
Reminds me of Elementary School where people made up rules all the time (especially with non-German Cards where kids just invented Effects, like Jirai Gumo can attack directly or something xD)
The Dark Magician meme was for the Duel Link commercial, and since it from Duel Links, there a reason why it is possible to summon DM with the commercial guy’s field. Because right now there is a skill that allows you to normal summon Dark Magician without tribute.
"You activated my Trap card" "I draaaaaw" "Heart of the Card" "Blue Eyes white Dragon" "gogagagagio" Yugioh GX also full of memes and lets nto forget Yugioh dueling city and yugioh starting songs
I like to play Exodia beat down where I buff the legs and arms to like 3000 or more atk and otk my opponent by punching them with exodias disembodied limbs. That's my favorite meme play
Basically the entire list could have been LittleKuriboh jokes. Screw the rules, I have money! In a few hours, the sun will rise. It's not him! I'm about to summon it... OOOOoooooo this card game tournament is simply faaaabulous.
"Kaiba, stop activating the race card and listen!" "AAAAH! EXODIA! IT'S NOT POSSIBLE! NOBODY'S EVER BEEN ABLE TO SUMMON _HIM_ !" "BROOKLYN RAGE!!" "CARD GAMES ON MOTORCYCLES!" "Obelisk the Tormentor, Slifer the Executive Producer, and ULTRA MEGA CHICKEN" and so many more
I'd like to add an honorable mention meme on to the Alister entry. You also have to give it to the "I ash your alis- aaaaaaand they opened the invocation too alright cool"
#10 is funny because they eventually added a skill to duel links that DOES let you normal summon Dark Magician without requiring tributes, but that was more than 4 years after the game’s release. It actually lets you normal summon ANY high level normal monster with 2500 in one of its stats whenever you want. The main targets for this being Blue Eyes White Dragon, Dark Magician, Red Eyes Black Dragon, Elemental Hero Neos and Summoned Skull. Though definitely it is used with the first 2 way more than the last 3. Especially since it has another effect revolving around chronicle magician, which is a support card for D.M. and Blue Eyes.
12:30 - Looks I am one of these players :) I often used MST in DuelLinks as a response to Spell/Trap being activated (since it's a Quick Play Spell) and wondered why it didn't stop its' effects... Well, now I know :)
Jesse Kotton comes across as the kind of guy who makes a child sit trough 20 minutes of a Danger FTK, only to lose the tournament, and for that kid to place higher.
5:49 I know most people not gonna agree with me *Beatrice is the one culprit here, OTK enabler or combo enabler, quick effect miller that avoided the ban by being limited*
