Hey Roy, Ticket To Ride NY is cabs :) not trains (Yes, I'm being that annoying guy right now). GREAT lists today. I was really feeling Tom's selections with Wingspan, Onitama, Roll Player, and Empires of the North. I'm really interested in trying Dominations, too. I love Mike's picks for Charterstone and Dinosaur Island, too. I'm actually playing the final scenario for Charterstone next week with my group. Zee is such a funny guy! Really, this whole group is great. Keep it up, guys.
As for y’all’s opinion that people who don’t like Chronicles of Crime haven’t played it: I’ve played it, and I’m still firmly of the opinion that it’s not a board game (or a particularly good game). I have nothing against the integration of apps into board games in general, but this takes that concept so far that you’re essentially playing a computer game with a physical player aid. The storytelling takes place on the app, the collecting evidence takes place on the app, all of the decision making takes place on the app, EVERYTHING takes place on the app...the only function of the board and cards is to show which character is at which location. That could have been on an in-app map and it would have been smoother and less fiddly. It feels like they included the physical components only so they could market it as a board game instead of an app game.
Splendor is boring as hell and when you say they come and go, you mean for you? Or in your community? Everyone I know strongly dislikes splendor and even those who owned it sold it for century golem edition or everdell
@@tonkabeanicecream5698 I agree. Played Splendor a few times and almost bought it. But the game is just sooooooo dull. I am surprised that it is this high.
Would really like to see more coverage of Glorantha, it’s a great game and even though I love Cthulhu Wars I think the factions in Gods’ War are more interesting. Looking forward to the new maps from the second Kickstarter, they redid the art from the base game and offered larger neoprene versions that look fantastic.
I was worried at first that Chronicles of Crime will be just app tapping but this is a great game. It really puts you in the mindset of a detective and makes my notes look like insane patient scribbles.
Crossovers with my 2020 Top 250 list: Tzolk'in: The Mayan Calendar (#238), Onitama (#235), Targi (#214), Charterstone (#202), Twilight Imperium (#190), Heaven & Ale (#187), Roll Player (#94), Carpe Diem (#86), Race for the Galaxy (#77 with New Frontiers), Splendor (#65), Gloomhaven (#47), Stone Age (#44), Wingspan (#23), and Ticket to Ride (#1).
I like to see Mike mention Atlantis Rising, i was on the fence about it but ive decided to get it with the recent kickstarter. November cant come fast enough
Running count of games I own on their lists: Tom: 3+4+6+4+7 Total (100 to 51 ) 24 Roy: 5+4 +5+4+4=Total 22 Mike: 2+5 + 4+6+3 Total 20 Zee: 2 +4 + 1+5+2 Total 14 After 50 picks
Dinosaur Island is my #1. I have never not had fun with it, and I agree with everything Mike said. It handles its complexity so well. I love that it feels like a bunch of minigames.
I disagree about the minis being necessary in Anachrony (1:33:28). Mike and Tom indicated that putting it in the exosuit mini is important in order to see the worker you placed. But the only time you need to see the worker is when you take it from the active column of your personal board. This is an excellent game with or without the minis.
The Reckoners trilogy books are also highly recommended! Super reads! And for those who do not like reading, just opt for the audiobooks. Those are also awesome. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
The pirates of the Caribbean edition of Liars dice is very cool looking and fun, but it can also go on the stinky games list for the overwhelming plastic wreak from the super cool Davy Jones dice cups.
Yes, Mike, Vengeance!! Whilst I feel it'd be much better solo (the only way I've played it), I just love how the dice rolls don't just give you a result but create the pieces to a puzzle out the best outcome for your situation. 👍
How many I own out of the listed games: Tom: 4 (Wingspan, Dominations, Empires of the North, Ticket to Ride) Roy: 1 (Scythe) Mike: 1 (Anachrony) Zee: 0 People: 2 (Stone Age, Tzolk'in) Winner: Tom
Yeah, just played Targi with the expansion yesterday and it is still great. And TSUKUYUMI is such a blast. I am a big fan of the stadees and got everything that is available. Also the two player option works pretty well.
@@JasonSmithPsychedelicTherapist same. Played it once. Thought it was ok. But just felt like roll dice. Stick dice somewhere. And that was it. Rinse repeat to boredom.
They have mentioned it in the past. It’s a card that takes away some of you accomplishments. Meaning it just delays the game end by another hour. I’ve never played the game. But I remember them speaking about it somewhere.
They’re pretty cool. I always play with them and most people I’ve played with seem wowed by them. But it would certainly be equally playable without them
There is a mythos card that basically negates one of your completed objectives. Given that most Eldritch Horror games are somewhat long (especially if playing with a lot of expansions), having to re-do a full third of the game is super punishing. I got burned by it twice and then removed it out of the mix just like they recommended.
Cannot disagree more with Tom on "Cthulhu Death May Die" being "just chuckling dice"?! This game has a perfect mix of both strategy and tactics, a lot of variety, theme and it is a lot of fun! Liking Arcadia Quest and missing on CDMD is hilarious.
I have been playing Race for the Galaxy a lot on BGA, some of them with expansions. I have to say that I love the first expansion and I like a lot the second one too. A box with these two would be perfect for me (although better would be to actually get the imperium expansion because I already have the rest from that "potencial" box) Love Race and it should be higher!!
If you want a data point for someone who played Chronicles of Crime and didn't like it, look no further. I enjoy apps in games, and this was a cool use for it, but I just didn't think it was any fun.
I like how Mike tries to sell how amazing it is that two Cthulhu were mentioned in a row. 73.8% of all board games have a Cthulhu theme so it had to happen eventually! Actually, I'm not a fan of Chronicles of Crime. Scan scan scan scan scan. Is this actually a game? I felt like I was checking out at Target.
OK. For my choice of set 10 in this video, I would choose the People's Choice but Tom's choices bump it up just a little bit more. So, the winner of this round is Tom.
One of the doom phase effects is "Suffer XYZ bad thing, OR return one completed mystery." It sets back the game by approximately 1/3. Designer Nikki Valens delights in how evil it is, so they're aware it's really rough, haha.
Sweet, sweet list, gentledudes. I like that Legacy is still going strong, although I would have not included Charterstone and Clank! The former I kind of packed up after 5 games, it was that repetitive and not very interesting. And Clank!...well, I was really looking forward to this after your hype, Tom but, maybe because of that, let me down a bit after I was done. It was ooookay, just not as epic as the Acq. Inc. shows throughout the years or as good as many other Legacy games. Definitely NOT the best Legacy game out there.
Yeah I played it in a group at first and thought it was okay and then tried it solo to see if that would help and definitely thought solo was worse. I just ended up coming to the conclusion it wasn't for me
Sure, powers repeat themselves, but the birds will have unique scoring via nest type, wingspan, max eggs, etc, and will have different habitats and food costs. Compare that to say, Everdell, where there are multiple copies of the same card, and it should at least count for something.
@@Bonzoso21 Except Everdell has much more interesting and varied card powers than Wingspan, even if the cards have duplicates. And I like Everdell a lot more as a game too, Wingspan is fine but adds nothing new and interesting to the already crowded genre aside from theme.
Yes Wasteland Delivery!!!! You're my favorite Mike! I especially like the economy and how the places you can pickup certain items and drop them off changes.
Totally agree about DI. The other great part of it is that when you take something it is not replaced...it's gone. Only after everyone has gone do you replace items. Wish more games did that.
@@thedicetower I haven’t gotten familiar with those three, but that’s a good thing that they enjoy heavier games. Don’t get me wrong, I greatly enjoy your “top” videos and I enjoy Tom, Zer, Roy, and Mike. I also like that they have different opinions and they have pointed me in the direction of games I may not have know of previously.
Mechants & Marauders was so close to being one of my favourite games, so very close... but I can't stand the combat system and how random and punishing it is. I also despise that once you lose, you start the game over with another character instead of at least being an honest elimination. Glory cards are dreadfully imbalanced and can instantly end someone else's game. It's a real shame, so many other things I love about this game, but I just can't stand the combat system and pseudo player elimination in a looooooooong game full of downtime.
Chronicles is probably the weakest of the detective games I’ve played thus far. It’s still a fun time though and it’s definitely innovative. For me I mainly miss the tangible aspects of other detective games (Sherlocks newspapers and map for example) I also am not a fan of having time limits on viewing crime scenes. It seems an artificial way to push your time along that doesn’t make a lot of sense.
I'm really enjoying these videos, thanks so much guys. One request though: Tom, please don't make those self-disparaging comments, and especially don't claim it's your kids making them.
I have played Chronicles of Crime and it's hot garbage. Sincerely the least enjoyable boardgame I've ever played. It's not even a game or a mystery, it's a "guess what the designer wanted you to guess" experience, and a supremely clunky, irritating one at that.
