Top 100 Influential Figures in American History, based on the list first published by The Atlantic.
This is a ranking of the top 100 influential figures in American history. The persons listed here made significant influence to American society, whether playing an active role in nation building, or becoming involved in its most infamous events. Included in this list are scientists, government leaders, inventors, athletes, celebrities, and religious figures.
The list is based on an original compilation from The Atlantic, an American magazine based in Boston. The list originally appeared in their December 2006 issue. They conversed with ten eminent historians, and from these discussions the 100 most influential Americans were finalized.
They included many of the Founding Fathers like George Washington and Benjamin Franklin; great minds like Thomas Jefferson and Albert Einstein, and civic leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and Susan B. Anthony; and innovators like Eli Whitney and Samuel F.B. Morse. They also included a few celebrities and athletes like Elvis Presley, Babe Ruth, and Jackie Robinson. Only three on the list are alive today: Ralph Nader, Bill Gates and James Watson.

James Madison is always the most overlooked influencer in US history. He synthesized liberal thought, common law, natural philosophy and government into what we know as the Constitution and had the diplomatic and political chops to help shepherd it through passage

@@ericshade9632 The list isn't "Most positively influential figures" it is "most influential." The list had the most fervently pro-slavery guy on it, not because he was good, but because he was a major reason slavery was so violently defended in the South. Ever since FDR, each decade has been defined by a US president and their rhetoric and ideology. The 1930s and 40s were defined by FDR's progressive response to the Depression and global leadership role in WW2 that made America mighty. The 1950s were defined by Eisenhower and Truman's response to the growth of Communism. The 1960s were defined by Kennedy's inspirational speeches and rhetoric that brought America together to persevere and achieve greatness. The 1970s were defined by the corruption and decline in morale caused by Nixon and Ford. The 1980s were defined by Reagan's leadership and his decision to leverage the economy to make the Soviet Union collapse under the weight of its own failures. The 1990s were defined by Clintonian third-way politics. The 2000s were defined by George Bush's beginning of the war on terror. The 2010s were defined by both president Obama and Trump who together intensified political disagreement which together led to more populism. Every president that has defined their decade belongs here.

I agree. He was very prolific, and iron-willed in his fight for civil rights.

TR did have a very profound impact on the way we lead our lives today but if it hadn't been for Thomas Jefferson and the Louisiana purchase as well as Lewis and Clack and Sacagawea there would have been no western US.

I don't think Obama or Trump moved the needle as much as most on this list have. Maybe 20 years from now we will look back and have them on a top 100 list.
@boydrobertson2362

@@Peter.Young21 I think they have, but we won't know for a while. I think the rise of left and right-wing populism caused by both of them could very well put them up there.
