I really appreciate the respect you have for the spirit of Hawaii. Many travel vloggers laugh off their ignorance when butchering the names of places but you take great care to pronounce things correctly. I also like the consideration for supporting local island business over commercial or off-island chains. And the historical factoids you work into the narrative. It is obvious you put a good amount of thought into what you produce.
I was fortunate enough to have lived and worked on Maui back in the 90's. I will never forget many of the foods that you are tasting in this video. But I miss more the friendliness of the Maui people and their Ohana that they shared with me. Thanks for the video and the memories, and may you always get 2 scoops rice. . Aloha.....
I know that it is quite extravagant and highly expensive. Have only eaten there with gift certificates. Mama's Fish House is an experience not to be forgotten. Must be a very special night. Fish is prepared perfectly and desserts are pieces of art. So worth it! Just outside of Paia town, beautiful sunset oceanfront. Worth a try at least once!
Just got back yesterday from Maui! Some of my fav places were: Tin Roof, Maui brewing, Dukes, Monkeypod, Mamas Fish House, Coconuts, Pa'ia Fish Market, Castaways, Sea Cliff, and food trucks : Like Poke and Braddah Hutts BBQ Grill (on the road to Hana)
Thank you so much for your video, often times we see videos made in the Hawaiian islands and many of times over the influencer uses terms like “traditional Hawaiian dishes“, “native Hawaiian food“ and often times the Japanese or Chinese or Filipino foods. Your video was well done and I thank you for visiting the Hawaiian islands specifically Maui and sharing your experience in such a Positive way
The most overlooked eating place with great food and low prices on the West Side are the ABC stores in Honokowai and Kapalua. No joke. Lots of local construction workers stand in line to order. Plus, there are either benches/tables to enjoy gathering.
i’m happy to see you’re enjoying the local restaurants we have here, and we have many!!! along with also paying mind to be respectful as well which doesn’t happen often sadly... thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoy the local foods and for supporting the local businesses. You should try Jack’s Inn, Sam Sato’s, Komoda Bakery, and Tasaka Guri Guri. You make me really miss my island Maui! Aloha!
You're comment helped me a ton to plan my trip to Maui, these are the kind of local digs I was really looking forward too, the video also helped!! I'm most excited for komoda bakery, thank you for sharing these places along with the video!
I CRAVE food land poke everyday! It will be my third time visiting Maui in September , I can’t wait! Definitely going to try some of these places I never even to yet! Thanks 😊
Other family owned local restaurants in Maui to support and is super yummy coming from a fellow resident on Maui born and raised. Cafe o lei at the Mill house, cafe o lei at the dunes, miyako sushi, Tokyo Tei, hamburger steak house, bamboo grill, Kula bistro, tamuras poke, food trucks across from Costco (like poke, moono (açaí bowls), kaleis food truck.) And jazzys Mexican food truck in makena.
Wow! You hit most of the places that we regularly hit when we go. Going back in a couple of months, I'll have to hit the few on the lists that I didn't know about until this video. Thanks!
yes, all his recommendations are great! I live here and I agree with his choice. there are many other choices, many expensive one, this list is a great starter list and all prices are affordable (considering Maui prices :) )
@Halie Bakes we were in Maui last month. Highly recommend Hawaiian discount car rental site. Found it through another RU-vidr we saved so much $$! I have no affiliation with them just a great tip. Maui is magical you’ll love it!!
Former Maui resident here. Next time there, hit Tin Roof, and Tamura's liquor store for poke. The food truck court across from Costco is also awesome - Kalei's Lunchbox, Like Poke are great. Save Waikiki Brewing for a trip to Oahu, and go to Kohola Brewery in Lahaina instead.
This video makes me hungry! lol! Great job. I agree with your recommendations. Mahalo for sharing. (P.S. I find it funny that you smell the food before you eat it. I do that a lot too - lol!)
Going to Maui soon for the first time and your video helped me plan my days! Love your recommendations. I'm a foodie, always down to try the best on the menu.
Thanks for posting this video. Will definitely try some of these places when we travel to Maui later this summer. It's always been our goal when visiting Hawaii to avoid touristy restaurants and support a small business instead. It's important to teach our kids not to be afraid of new experiences and embrace the local flavor.
Nice vid! Good cross section of what we have here. I would add Nuka in Ha'iku, Honokawai Okazuya, Sale Pepe and Star Noodle in Lahaina. And lots more !
Been going to Maui for a month for the last 20years. Have enjoyed every place on your list, and you nailed it. What I’m most impressed with is that you found all of these top notch places in one week. Good on you Braa. Mahalo
Thank you so much for your video. We tried many of your recommendations and they were all fantastic! Leoda’s, Kimos and Paia Fish Market were all so good! The shave ice from Ululani’s was a great treat.
The Hana ranch restaurant, the Hawaiian plate you had the poke is traditional Hawaiian poke I can tell by the ingredients that is a Hawaiian dish. So is the laulau Mea ai ono (delicious food) Mahalo nui loa kaua
I've also found the best Mexican food is Amigo's(3 locations), great quality food and a reasonable price. Glad you kept your choices within a realistic budget. I like to mix the spicy poke and the avo poke to make spicy avo poke.
For Poke, I love Safeway's Kalapana poke. But I also add more chili oil cause I like it more hot. Foodland's Special Sauce poke is my 2nd go to for poke. My favorite sushi place is M Sushi or Umi.
Try Eskimo Candy in Kihei - their seafood chowder is the best in the world, and all their fish is so ono and fresh. Only open during the week, asked them why one time and the response was pure Maui Style - hey da weekends for da o'hana. The primary business is supplying fresh fish to a lot of the restaurants in the area, the little restaurant is just a side business but it is definitely worth a stop. Going there in May, can't wait. Also, Foodland poke is good, but Safeway's is better.
Terrific video, thanks! I would definitely add Mama's Fish House. It's expensive and hard to get a reservation, but the food and location are the best! Also, would like to see more from the Wailea side. For instance, we enjoyed MonkeyPod, but there are many other restaurants around there.
Some good recs! You picked some great dishes too. Ululani's is definitely on my list. Here's some of my favorite spots: Ono Tacos in Lahaina, taco truck close to Kuhula Brewing which is also another great stop. Izakaya Genbe in Kihei is a hidden secret, you need a reservation so call before you show up. Down the Hatch in Lahaina was a big surprise, it's super busy and in a touristy area, but the food was really good even though it was pricey and the staff is super cool. For Hana I HIGHLY recommend Thai Food by Pranee, it's a hidden gem but not so hidden it's hard to find. For something different I love Star Noodle, it's a bit of a hipster ramen type joint, however, it does NOT disappoint, good date spot. It's great to see folks enjoying the local flava and not just going to the tourist traps and luaus.
He talked about supporting local mom-and-pop shops but a lot of the spots you went are corporate. Kihei Caffe definitely should have been on that list. So should have Eskimo Candy and tamuras and the cinnamon roll spot in Kihei
Right on! Some new places to try, so far I've been to Nalu's(my favorite), Sam Sato's, Da kitchen, Fork n salad, Coconuts , Mama's, Paia Fish market, Dukes, and a couple more, they've all been fantastic! 😋😋😋
Love Maui - we were not able to get there this year. : ( Some other favs: The Gazebo for breakfast, Nalu's South Side Grill, Stewz Maui Burgers, Komodo General Store for donuts especially a cocoa joe.
dude i think i remember seeing you filming everybody for one of your videos while i lived on Maui! And i always thought to myself after the two different days i saw you “i wonder if i’ll ever see this guys video(s)” 😂 wow!
Thank You for making this video! I’ve never felt like trying a Reuben sandwich before, since none of the ingredients by themselves really appeal to me that much, except for maybe Swiss cheese. But, after I saw your expressions while eating one from Leoda’s on this video, I had to try it. I went to Leoda’s on Maui last week and ate one. It was really good - Mahalo!
What an amazing video! I'm just booking a trip to oahu for june and def gonna visit these places. Also love your smile u look so happy when u eat haha very cute!
Dude - you missed the best spot in Hana - TONY'S PLACE food truck out by Hamoa Beach. Amazing fish and burgers not to mention the setting to eat lunch at. Very nice spot. Also recommend Brownie sundae for dessert. Tony's is ono grinds!!!! Check it out next time!
Great video. The only place I've been to is the Paia Fish Market. I was at the Kuhio Ave location on Honolulu last year, and their home fried potatoes are amazing and their fish as well...I went there 4 times on a 2 week trip and every meal was amazing.
