I was expecting to see some of your mentions in this vid. The widow of the web scene in krull terrified me as a child, but Xusia's resurrection in the sword and the sorcerer flat out gave me nightmares! My parents weren't opposed to taking small children to R-rated fantasy films! 😁
Movies I would add to this list, maybe a part 2? Time Bandits (1981) Excalibur (1981) The Sword and the Sorcerer (1982) (fun fact, I was named after the princess, sorta) The Last Unicorn (1982) Krull (1983) Conan the Destroyer (1984) (also a weird case of where I think the sequel was a more enjoyable film) Sword of the Valiant (1984) Red Sonya (1985) Legend (1985) The Adventures of Hercules (1985) (a weird case where I do not remember the first film at all but this sequel has a firm place in my memory) Big Trouble in Little China (1986) The Golden Child (1986) Masters of the Universe (1987) The Adventures of Baron Muchausen (1988) Willow (1988) (a top favorite tied with my love of the Princess Bride and Labyrinth, both of which made the list, genuinely surprised this one didn't, especially with the mention of Star Wars at the start of the video)
Looking back from our 21st century hindsight, it looks as if Fantasy was a beloved genre but these were smallish releases at the time and many of them did very meagre box office. It's more popular now, post-Lord of The Rings, and the nostalgia we have for those few gems.
Ahh, The Secret of NIMH, spent so much time as my top film of all time... hum, got all this on dvd with only Return to Oz as the exception. Not sure if I have ever seen that avalable as it would had been a quick grab for me... going to have to look into that.
PLEASE! PRETTY PLEASE! With sugar on it!! 🙏🍧 Do a Top 10 Knights In Shining Armor And Their Damsels In Distress In Distress In Fantasy Movies. Here is the list: Seven Voyage Of Sinbad, Sleeping Beauty, Clash Of The Titans, Krull, Legend Of The Eight Samurai, Fire And Ice, Conan The Destroyer, Legend, Black Cauldron, Castle In The Sky. 😉
The first Conan movie is undoubtedly the greatest fantasy movie made, and as the remake proved, which I've never bothered to watch, it can't be remade, the planets were lined up perfectly for that movie, the era of the Conan books that'd had the cover illustrations done by Frank Frazetta had just ended so that was what was in everyone's minds as far as the image of Conan goes, and John Milius wasn't stupid and had the production and costume departments and design everything to mimic Frazetta's art work, and of course Arnold Schwarzenegger, the ONLY person ever capable of playing that role, was in his prime then, everything about him, even that goofy accent that he's never been able to overcome was perfect for the role, he specially trained to look like the Conan from Frazetta's art work which actually had him out of the ideal proportions for body building competition, and he pulled it off perfectly, then you've got the other actors who were perfectly cast for their roles, James Earl Jones (RIP), Sandahl Bergman (yea like every school boy in America didn't have the hots for her), Mako as the wizard and even John Milius's surfer buddy Gerry Lopez (Mr Pipeline) was just perfect in his role as Subotai. Yea, to say the planets lined up perfectly for that one is a gross understatement, and I actually feel bad for people who will never know what it was like to be a teenager in 1982 and experience that movie, for years now I've considered myself very lucky to have been the perfect age when 2 movie's came out in my lifetime, 12 years old in 1977 when Star Wars came out and 17 for Conan The Barbarian in 1982. Come, let me tell you about the days of high adventure...!!!
You mention the music of Queen on "Highlander", but not "Flash Gordon"? And neglect the magical Andrew Powell score that's the best part of "Ladyhawk"? For shame! And don’t forget, "The Neverending Story" may not have been a box office hit, but its theme song charted in the top ten in eighteen different countries.
As I see it, The Little Mermaid is a story about a teenager who abandons her home & family for a gamble at a romance with an adult man & total stranger, which is a terrible message to send to young girls. In the original story, he's already engaged to another woman & the mermaid dies.
More masters of the universe origins lore please Clawful Moss Man Buzzoff. spikor the members of the evil Horde please Evil Seed. Gradamaur the Dragon please
I do have a fondness for horrible special effects, terrible dubs, & so-bad-it's-funny vibes. Might try Flash Gordon for a party drinking game. Hope I don't accidently get the porn parody by mistake.
