Agreed. Initially, I cringed because the voice sounded robotic, so I almost checked out; but the descriptions kept me interested. I wouldn't be surprised to find the narrator is a result of text rendered into speech artificially with script assistance from AI. 🤖Which turned out well enough after all.
Agreed! One of the few movies I’ve boughten in last few year’s opposed to renting, watch it on special occasion’s when I want to enter that dark atmospheric world!
I'm glad to see someone mention a Tetsuo film (checked the comments just to see if someone did). Bullet man was my first one, and it's a bit more...tame? (Still dark as hell) It's definitely one of my favorite finds from Netflix on a random whim. Tokyo Gore Police too though that's a bit more werid for weirdness sake.
I would put on here eXistence, the void, from beyond, annihilation, bug, midsommar, the wicker man, evil dead 2, dellamorte dellamore (one of my favourite can also be called Cemetary man) mother (2017), house of a 1000 corpses, under the skin, pans labyrinth, Skinamarink, perfume. Some of these don’t quite fit the category but if you want out there weird but good trippy horrors/ unsettling movies these are all fantastic.
Mother and skinamarink … eh … but Bug was a wild ride. When he is pulling his teeth out I was like wow are they on meth bc this is getting really out there 😂 the void is one of the best cosmic horror movies out there imo. Midsommar is another eh for me but that’s mostly bc of the annoying characters and how the girl boss ending was dumb, we are meant to hate her boyfriend but he was literally date r*ped and that’s part of why she chooses to kill him - that’s at least how I saw it. Good list dude!
I wasn't expecting this to just be a list of my favorite films. There's only one or two I haven't seen yet, so those are immediately going on the watchlist. Thanks!
Possession from 1981 w/ Sam Neil and Isabelle Adjani should def be on this list as well as eXistence , the Void and maybe Lost Highway( not a horror per se but horrific none the less)
Probably one of the better adaptations of his work. Certainly the best version of this story. Supposed to be an update of 'The Dunwich Horror' in the works by the same people. But probably not starring Nick.
It’s pretty good, I also love lovecraft style horror (bloodborne is my favorite game) and color out of space is much better imo than the recent movie where the dude is stuck in a glory hole toilet with jk Simmons. It was so dumb
@@adrianfytr351998's "out of sight" with clooney, directed by steven soderberg, is excellent. ving rhames, don cheadle, dennis farina, steve zahn, albert brooks, luis guzman, catherine keener... great flick.
While not all psychedelic movies, I did "put the pieces together" to connect a few films during a psychedelic experience. This playlist does not represent reality but is a personal mythology that was unintended my the films various creators; 0th - Absentia 1st - Coherence 2rd - The Endless 3th - The Void The idea of "other spaces" is explored in Absentia so I added it to the list but it is not connected to anything from space or an extra-dimensional deity like the other three. The way I tie the films together is that a group of people who realise the splitting of dimensions from the events in Coherence gather together to form a cult in The Endless. However, it is not the only cult, nor did the characters escape the deity's ultimate machinations. The cults around the world start coming together as directed by the deity to horrific effect as seen in The Void.
I really liked Absentia. It's very bare bones and low budget but just keeps you glued to the screen with the plot, acting, direction and an unsettling feeling. You can really see Mike Flanagan's talent in this movie. I think is his first.
SO GLAD you mentioned Jacob's Ladder. It's such a good film, and so overlooked. I am a bit surprised that Mother! wasn't on the list. By the end, that film is about as psychedelic as it gets, and really upsetting.
Brilliant choices. I haven't seen The Visitor for ages. Beyond the Black Rainbow is great too. I've seen it like 4 -5 times. And of course, my lovely Dario Argento. Suspiria is his most famous work and I adore it but my personal faves are Tenabrae (1982) and Trauma (1993).
@@r.michaelburns112 I mean, to each their own. The psychedelic experience is subjective, of course. It feels very intentionally inspired by late 60s psychedelia to me. From the moody macrophotography, the set pieces (including the geodesic dome laboratory that glows from the ant-constructed obelisks emitting concentrated sunlight), to the far-out scanimation overlay effects, the extremely cryptic and surreal ending sequence, the Pink Floyd-esque synth-heavy soundtrack to the entire premise of ants turning into intelligent creatures from some vague cosmic phenomenon, to the way that the scientists discover communicating with ants via channeling/amplifying frequencies.
"The Last Wave", circa 1977, made by Peter Weir, an "Australian New Wave" film (along with "Stone", "Mad Max", "Walkabout", "Thirst", "Wake in Fright", etc), was killer. Dream sequences, aboriginal prophecies, and a deluge finale could easily have been on this list, were it not for it's relative obscurity.
@@Dublonothing I read the book by Kenneth Cooke last winter. Good, but that movie is brutally good. Even the beginning, with the little train platform in Tiboonda had a feeling of foreboding. Great film, so glad it was found and restored.
got most of these but was good to hear about "White of the Eye", "The Boxers Omen", and "Amer" for the first time. Now feel compelled to get them, as this is a type of horror /fantasy film i enjoy a lot. Lot of other good recommendation from others here too.
If you enjoy "Amer" you should also check out "The Strange Colour Of Our Bodies' Tears". It's by the same two directors and leans more into the very dark Lynch stuff while still giving praise to the Giallo genre like "Amer".
@@nerdy8330 thanks for the heads-up. i believe "Let the Corpses Tan" is another of theirs? its great fun getting to find new directors and they've got three films i haven't seen, but sound right up my alley. cheers!
Great selection! Quite a few of my favourite films in there. My wild card addition would be David Lynch's "Inland Empire" - maybe not what most would call psychedelic or horror, but a hell of a trip nonetheless.
I would add "The Dark Song" to this list. Powerful psychological insights combined with compelling hallucinatory visuals combine to provide a lasting vivid impression. great acting, loads of magick lore. modern setting.
I'd add A Lizard In A Woman's Skin (1971), Footprints on The Moon (1975), The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Miss Osbourne (1981), Dream Demon (1988), Paperhouse (1988), Hardware (1990), Dust Devil (1992), Climax (2018) as well as a couple others to the list.
Cronenberg himself created a library for this list with every title being a guide to the twisted and macabre. The Serpent and the Rainbow should have been on the list probably. Lair of the White Worm definitely should have been on here. Regardless of the criticism, I must commend you on the list.
While not a horror film (though there certainly are horrific moments) my go-to psychedelics film is 1999's Adolescence of Utena. What a visual and thematic FEAST!
Very good list! I would also put "Subconscious Cruelty" in this list and I'd like to recommend two new movies, I think they are both just a year old or so. It's "The Outwaters" and "Enys Men".
Every one of these I've seen is on my personal list of all-time favorites. Beneath the Skin and Annihilation are two more gems that deserve to be on this list.
The only ones on this list I’ve seen are Jacob’s Ladder, Altered States and Color out of Space. I absolutely adore all three of those films, so I’m very much looking forward to checking out the rest of this list.
the lack of Gaspar Noe films is surprising. Climax would be a perfect fit here, being about a party that goes awry after someone spikes the punchbowl with LSD...
I tried to watch that movie but I couldn’t get into it. But I had non horror / psychological / trippy movie fans in the room with me and that probably didn’t help. Should try it again alone. Apparently the whole “spiked punch bowl with lsd” actually happened to a dance troupe, not sure how much of that true part of the story Carrie’s over tho.
The Void from 2016 is a great B movie that could manage to be on this list, since Colour out of Space was here, the Void is a love letter to cosmic and psychodelic movies and/or books.
Thank you for this! I own 5 of these on either VHS or DVD (Jacob's Ladder is my #1 fave film ever) and another 2 I have seen. I'm happy to now have 8 films I have not seen and will most likely love.
I happened to watch Boxer's Omen a few days ago. The best magic movie I've ever seen. The spells are wicked. And I wasn't expecting the black mages to be Filipinos, haha! What a trip! Great list! This is one of my favorite genres, now I know the name.
I am surprised the movie Phantasm didn't make this list. The way it deals with other dimensions and fades in and out of a dream like reality seems like it would be a no-brainer.
Grew up in the mid 80s watching "House" with my sister every day during the summer and after school. "House" and the "Blues Brothers"..... good memories for sure.
Had my boyfriend watch that recently for the first time. I said you get to see scarlet Johansson nekked. After the first “death” and esp when dudes skin fell off in the void… haha he was so confused.
I dig The Boxer's Omen. It's amazing. Also Seeding of a Ghost is amazing as well. Vermillion Eyes is the craziest thing. But I'm wondering if Severin will ever release it.
Mandy was a good movie but it does start slow. I fell asleep the first time during the first bit. The second attempt had me almost turning it off but I am glad I didn't. When it takes off, it is a wild movie worth a watch. The calm begging contrasts nicely and works much better on subsequent viewings. A good movie.
Though Possession is a great horror movie, it is not psychedelic. Psychedelic is a very specific term. In connection to cinema or images, it is often denoted by outrageous colors, hallucinatory images that one might experience in a drug trip, surrealism, dream-like cinematography etc. While Possession might be 'trippy' in the sense of its overt weirdness and plot, it really wouldn't qualify as a psychedelic movie in any way visually. Compare the general realism of the movie and it's locations, along with its dour, subdued color palette, to any of the movies on the list. They utilize a stunning amount of lighting effects, color gels, neon lighting, analog digital effects, smoke effects, over-the-top set design etc. Many actually feature drug trips in them! I think Possession really falls far from the markers of what is considered psychedelic. And probably The Lighthouse would be the one movie on this list that I don't think qualifies.
Ummm The Lighthouse is literally in black and white.. Jacobs Ladder and Videodrome are also quite subdued colorwise. Psychedelic is not just about colours.. “trippy” is definitely a more synonymous term though
I watched possession for the first time about 3 months ago bc of Kino Corners channel and wow, that lady was SUCH a great actress. I was terrified of her. With just a look she was powerfully controlling the emotion and fear in the movie.
"The Visitor" is just a cinematic delight! From the bizarre musical score, to the puzzling 70's, new-agey plot and visuals, all wrapped up in fantastic unintentional comedy. It's just such a beautiful mess. Clearly, cocaine is a hell of a drug! I don't think this could ever be duplicated.
I recognized it the moment you put it on screen... VIDEODROME!!! One of my all time favorite movies. Wonder if you're gonna have "Dreamscape" and "From Beyond" on here! (& Cats Eye)
*Mad God* *The Void* A Field In England Coherence (more tame but trippy imo) Event Horizon Someone mentioned The Cell, I thought that would be a solid entry for the visuals alone. Also what about something like say Hellraiser? That has some really trippy scenes and moments that are outside the “simply horror” realm.
