I had a Skoda Octavia 1.9 tdi on an 09 plate and changed it to a 14 reg Sportage 1.7 crdi just recently. there was a month before my renewal date and as the Kia is a group lower I did not expect much of a rise. My quote was over double the last premium I paid. Last year it was £277 and this year the ins co wanted £580, so I went on a comparison website and found an AA police the same as I had with my last insurer which came out at £495. I managed to get my insurer to get it down to £499. What a rip off we motorists get on a daily basis.

How crazy is this - my 2024 Mini Countryman S E is more expensive to insure than my 2023 D250 Defender 90 that has Offroad use included in the policy, BUT both of those cars individually cost less to insure than even the cheapest to insure on the list. One of the few bonuses of living in the Central Belt of Scotland rather than having a S E of England post code I suppose.

As someone with a car in insurance group 2 who's been worried about the idea of leasing a new car in group 28, it's reassuring to see such a variety of group numbers on this list and that it doesn't affect the premium as much as I thought
@DefinitelyNotAGuru
@DefinitelyNotAGuru Месяц назад
The important thing to note is that it absolutely CAN, that doesn't mean it always WILL. Or certainly not always by as much as you think, certain insurers have different appetite too so it's not unheard of for an insurer to not always go along with insurance groupings when it comes to pricing.
@Ashley.D
@Ashley.D Месяц назад
@@DefinitelyNotAGuruAbsolutely, but I'll not let it put me off and I'll make sure I get a quote to actually make sure. It's night and day compared to my experience in pet insurance where the breed can 5x the premiums, though with your explanation of payouts it makes sense seeing as breed is the biggest determiner of what your vet bills will look like

I thought that the insurance costs would relate to the insurance groups, however it does not seem to be directly comparable? As an insurance expert Jim, I would also be interested in your thoughts on excessive accident repairs for minor bumps and writing off of easily repairable cars. I have watched a few RU-vid videos by Saving Salvage who has purchased writeoff repairable cars and has fixed them with a minimum of cost and time. A recent one that particularly springs to mind was a nearly new LR Defender which was classed as a Cat S write off. However when he repaired it, the car had no structural damage and was repaired with £3K's worth of parts and a day of his time. Sounds like somethings going wrong with the whole process somewhere?
@DefinitelyNotAGuru
@DefinitelyNotAGuru Месяц назад
It’s badly broken. Insurers basically have to use new parts and guarantee the work that’s done for 2 years. You could often do the job yourself with used parts for 10% of the cost and offer no guarantee of course. A lot of your premium is going directly into unnecessary costs to meet the regulators requirements around fair pricing (which have effectively wiped out an insurers ability to offer a good price to attract new customers and therefore punished everyone who previously shopped around).

8:00 part of the reason re why prices went up again is cause the regulator did act...but in the wrong way for those who used to shop around. Insurers now have to offer new customers the same price as current ones, which means those who used to shop around via comparison sites can't do so any more as insurers put up all prices for everyone. Might help those who never switched, but shafts the rests

Insurance is now in the category of businesses models that is gamed for super profits rather than competetive business and shared risk. Similar to travel insurance now. Similar parasitical business models are house building, whereby they drip feed the market and dont compete or leasehold properties and all that entails.

One thing that is rarely mentioned with car insurance is profit. The target for pretty much everyone is break even then make profit on the premium holding over the 12 month. The actual car insurance usually makes a technical loss for most.

👍👍👍 I listened to a programme on Radio 4 last week on motoring insurance. One gentleman phoned in to give his daughters experience. She is eighteen years old, worked as a teaching assistant. Her insurance cost £1,600 per year. She changed her job and became a courier delivery driver. The use of her own vehicle did not change and she drove a works vehicle for deliveries. After notifying her insurance company that she had changed her employment the insurance rose to £4.600😲. The only way she was able to slightly reduced the premium was to take her mother OFF her policy. From what I understand usually ADDING an older person can reduce the premium. His question was, should young drivers, have to base their future careers on their motoring insurance. Thanks Jim
