GDP in ppp is useless if country's basic need like food, clothes etc is dependent on imports because in that case people will need dollar equivalent to buy things. In case of India we are not dependent on imports in these basic necessities because of that living cost in India is 1/7th of what it is in China. Now come to products like electronics that we import becomes expensive for us. There we feel the heat of nominal GDP. Because of the difference in living cost GDP in ppp matters as it normalises the things. For eg. In 1$ you can have good meal in India so can you get same food in 1$ if you are in US. No, right?

The fact is, indonesia GDP/capita is lower than azerbaijan, algeria, bosnia and exactly the sama as tunisia, smoa and micronesia countries and most africa countries, indonesia GPD/capita in 2018 is at 4400usd, lets compare it with australia which is at 65000usd at the moment. USA GDP/capita is at 63000usd and china GDP/capita is only at 10000usd at the moment. The real measure to measure the wealth and wellfare of a country is from their GDP/capita.

GDP per capita nomial only measured average per individual moey in USD, and obviously countries around the world have their own currency and goods price, so nominal USD per capita number is useless in measuring real living quality and wealth. Indonesia is already above .700, upper middle, not the best of course, but it's growing at steady pace as the economy grew. A point that many people seem to miss here: Europe = ~10% of world population North America = ~8% of world population Asia = ~70% of world population If the trend continues the way it does now, it will take 50-100 years for Asia to have a similar GDP per Capita which actually tells that they have caught up with European and American standards (maybe). To put it into perspective, for India to have similar GDP per captia as Germany they would need to have a GDP of 81 Trillion USD. It is projected in 2023 they will be at 16 Trillion. Same goes for China. If India or China had a same GDP per capita as the USA they would roughly need a GDP of 100 Trillion USD. That is not going to happen in a long, long time and the resources on earth are probably not even sufficient to sustain a growth to this point. China is catching up and might manage to get to a level of Germany per person by 2050, the other countrie are way behind though and will take much longer

The average European and American workforce is much more productive than the Asian counterparts, and will stay more productive and thus more wealthy during our lifetimes at least due to more financial means that can be used for invesing in robot technology etc to stay on top. Although that speaks for Europe and America the main reason why Europe and America will stay incredibly relevant and important is the standing of science in the western world. the United States account for 25% of the world scientific output while Europe accounts for roughly 35%. Combined 60+% of all scientific breakthroughs and acchievments are made in the western world which translates to the west being ahead and staying ahead in science. catching up in that will not be as easy as catching up econically and it will take a century or more for countries like Chima to be at competitive levels.

Don't forget their purposely constructing barren cities to create a fake economy. China is building multiple cities in which no one lives because when a country constructs infrastructure, GDP increases. Their GDP projections are not actually relevant to the countries actual development, but that doesn't mean China hasn't come a long way in a short time from a mostly agrarian economy to a true economic contender.

Developing nations use their labour pool to underwrite huge expansion but eventually they reach the middle income trap where standards of living are generally higher, the population's education and expectations are also higher, the cheap labour industries moves to other developing nations. They also have the late adopters advantage in regards to technology. Correct me if I'm wrong but China seems to thrive on the back of western technology and despite decades of trying have not really come to the forefront of world class innovations, so when the middle income trap is upon them what will they have to offer?
