As for the rumors, yeah okay, lowest of low hanging fruit and even then only marginally explaining why being true was important or even meaningful.

Supposdy Prince had terrible chronic pain resulting from his years of wild stage theatrics. That was possibly a made-up excuse to justfy his addiction, but as a chronic pain sufferer myself, I can relate to the desire to get relief using drugs.
