You know Cannibal Holocaust is brutal when even the director was under investigation from the police because the deaths look so realistic they thought he documented actual murders
The Exorcist is a masterpiece. A lot of films rely too much on gore and brutality where as shock value, and where films are believable as fiction, leave a long lasting impression on the viewer.
That’s why I like Alford Hitchcock & Jordon Peel films. So much of the horrors are off screen & psychological - far scarier than stuff thrown in your face.
The exorcist was just a complete mind blower without any get back that's my best way to describe that movie because that movie to this very day still scares me and I remember when it came out in 73 that is the only movie that bothers me even to this day
I love the Evil Dead so much. It's honestly my favourite horror movie. I do think its hilarious though - I watched it when I was 17 and my mum told me she watched it for the first time when she was around 17 because her older brother made her watch it, and she hated it. She genuinely doesn't understand where I got my love for horror from lol. But Evil Dead will ALWAYS have my heart
I remember Faces of Death on VHS and watching it with my aunt. The politician suicide was brutal. I always liked spending the night over her house. She let me watch all the stuff a child wasn't supposed to. My first time watching Tales from the crypt HBO too 🤭 RIP Stella. ❤️
Wow. I used to love Tales from the Crypt as a kid. I saw the edited version that came on late night on Fox. Most of those people on the Faces of Death movie were stupid.
@@michaelmyers3709 Yea the real movie didn't have any fake stuff. I saw the real underground VHS tapes with my aunt and his suicide was def on there. California had the real videos and it may have been titled something else but close to Faces of death so that it was available but I remember that suicide. Early 80s is when I saw it.
I've watched a lot of disturbing movies but Serbian has been the only one years later I wish I had heeded the warnings about viewing. It is haunting in absolutely all the worst ways possible.
Wasn't a certification, was more a term adopted by news outlets at the time during a swathe of gory and violent horror films. Most of them are now considered cult classics.
The Texas chainsaw massacre will always be the GOAT of scary movies. Traumatised me for years and still scares me but now I appreciate the masterpiece it is.

A Serbian film and Antichrist have so many things you can't unsee or ever forget. Totally shocking. The newer version of "I spit on your grave" was also pretty disturbing.
The Horror Of Party Beach is another movie I remember watching as a kid,and must say for a 1960's black and white film it was pretty graphic, about toxic waste bringing under water plant life to life after being disposed of in the ocean, then the creatures come a shore and wreak havic on innocent people.
@@jonplayle6954 I'll tell you what, my housemate & I regretted it partway through but we're to scared to turn it off in case something grabbed us from under the couch! Never again!! 🤣
@@jonplayle6954 @@jonplayle6954 Oh buddy, with good microdot LSD, all logic goes out the window! We were hallucinating the patterns in the carpet moving & the walls breathing (although that was nice- with every breath intake, it felt funny!) and it was all laughs until we put the films on. Texas Chainsaw Mascara was bad enough - we got past it and got into the fun of it all again - if you don't know, a good trip will last 5-7 hours. I was stupid enough to put on Evil Dead & that killed us! 🤣 We shit when the other housemates returned about 5am! At least their good time club vibe saved us🙈😆
I lived in the suburb where the house used by Mr. Jackson used for the filming. It is on the top of the hill to the left as you take the Hataitai bus into Wellington city. And, I went to a wedding reception in Porirua in the same house he used to film "Brain Dead". It was called "Gear House"; it was like a landmark property.
Can you do a list of underrated horror movies? I feel movies such as the ruins , deep blue sea, 47 meters down, and maybe 47 meters down uncaged are severely underrated.
As a child I watched Evil dead along with my friends, for some reason they were chills, But I was cared to death! Had closed my eyes whole film, but the voices and sound were so intense, I was literally shivering juts from them!
When I worked in a video store in the mid-80s, I couldn't keep copies of Faces of Death on the shelves. Not because it was banned, but because so many people wanted to rent it. I'll neve wrap my head around why people want to watch torture porn like the Saw movies, but then again, my choices probably seem strange to others, so....
95% of Faces Of Death is fake. The funny thing is, I've seen dozens of extreme real life gore movies online from cartel executions and extremists. That was over 10 years ago. I really have no desire to see any more. I found the curiosity about real death gets sated, and sated permanently. I've noticed a lot of people online have made similar comments.

I had to laugh my ass off for Germany's reasoning for banning "Saw 3-D": "movies cannot portray inhuman acts of violence against human or humanoid beings." hahahhahahhhaha Sorry, Germany, but you can never live it down.
@@mikitz At the time, there was another film called Brain Dead and they took Peter Jackson's Braindead to court because of name conflict etc etc. I'm from New Zealand and can't even find the DVD of Braindead- its so rare here.
Thank you for the update, WatchMojo..!! Exorcist sure was scary. One of those movies I had to watch with a pillow to hide my eyes when I was a youngster. 🤣
Salo is easily one of the most disturbing films ever made, but I think it is absolutely a piece of art. It's beautifully made despite how horrifying it is. Doubt I'll ever watch it again, but I don't regret watching it.
It always gives me a chuckle about the original TCM. Its director, Tobe Hooper, originally thought it should have been rated PG!! Of course, they didn't have PG-13 at the time of its release, but I found extremely SCARY--not extremely GORY, as the title implies. Still one of the best original horror movies out there. Now, if you want a complete change in atmosphere, I suggest viewing Part 2. I laughed my butt off during that one--especially at Bill Mosely, who played "Chop Top."
I agree with the list. Also I will say Texas Chainsaw Massacre is the number one in my personal list. Yesterday I watched again next to Evil Dead and the Exorcist. But it was the Texas massacre the one which left me totally disturbed and amazed.
What's interesting is that despite how gross the film is, the actors admitted they never had issues on set. Several of the victims found the film funny due to the filming schedule making it hard to figure out besides going with the lines.
Dead Alive is banned? Then I'm grateful I still have my VHS copy. Hilarious film, almost as funny as the Feebles, but not as disturbing as Heavenly Creatures. Jackson is an amazing director. Lovely Bones and Forgotten Silver are my personal favorites, though the first three Lord of the Rings movies are good fun.
True horror & disturbing movies A Serbian film The green inferno The human centipede 2 Salo & Saw &. The hostel Wrong turn &. Lights off The hills have eyes Paranormal activity
Anna Elisabeth "Anneliese" Michel (21 September 1952 - 1 July 1976) was a German woman who underwent 67 Catholic exorcism rites during the year before her death. She died of malnutrition, for which her parents and priest were convicted of negligent homicide Poor child suffered due to her parents superstitious nature. And finally she died
Hellraiser and The Evil Dead never got a cinema release in Ireland. Dead Alive was given a cinema release in Ireland but only as part of a horror film festival. The Exorcist could only been seen in cinemas up until the late 1990s
I know this isn't a banned one but my grandpa let me watch the children of the corn when i was 8 because he thought it was "a nice movie a bout vegtables". We also watched the rocky horror picture show a year later so idk haha
Maybe I'm just used to the Exorcist, but I don't understand why more places would ban a movie with someone being possessed than one where they literally r@pe a newborn.
At the time its religious aspects made it more sensational. People get VERY pi$$y when someone appears to badmouth their god... As for _"A Serbian Film"_ I covered my eyes with both hands when that scene came up as I didn't want that memory in my head... I kind of regret watching the movie at all.
Right.. whenever I see these list about banned horror films and dont see those and OTHERS on the list I'm like... OH YOU TALKING ABOUT THE TAMER BANNED HORROR MOVIES ...theres a whole other subgenre of horror that's completely wild and depraved
'A Serbian Film' is so disturbing, I didn't want to even admit I'd seen it to anyone. When asked what it was about, I was like....damn.... I can't even describe what this movie is about, there are scenes that even to this day I can't describe out loud, because it would mean admitting I'd actually watched them. I worry that people will think I'm demented, or worse, for watching it. THAT is how 'wrong' A Serbian Film truly is. And, I'm a pretty hard core horror buff. It takes a lot to disturb me, and I mean, a LOT. Usually if a film involves harm to animals, that's where I'll draw a line, because I just can't take that.... A Serbian Film doesn't harm any animals.... it does worse. And what makes it even more horrible, is it does it very, very well. The ultimate message of the film is that there is a market for the things depicted in the film, out there in the world. That there is a part of our society that WANTS to see such things, and is willing to pay to see them. The film brings attention to these atrocities, and the people that keep such 'business' IN business. And, ultimately, that such business needs to be stopped.
Evil dead is now rated FSK16 in Germany some years ago. And even Starship Troopers got rerated with FSK16. Today the FSK is better than earlier but sometimes their decisions seems diced if that makes sense 😅
Problem is that most people are too stupid to understand their rational … its not blood and gore that is the driving factor, but the socio-pedagogic as well as psychological level.
Im from Germany. You could easy make a list of 20 banned Horror Movies in Germany 😂 Especially the old Splatter and Zombie Movies are banned in their Uncut Versions
@@GanymedeXD That’s the point. All the old movies that were banned and than years later checked again, are now uncut and free to watch. Thing is you have to pay to get them checked. And no one invests in an old movie.
I remember seeing those video nasties during the 80’s, my friend got hold of the banned videos… I felt like such a rebel watching these banned films…! 😂😂😂😂
I've watched a Serbian film and it didnt move me a hair except for the baby and I don't remember if there was a little girl too. But the rest is not a disturbing film at all.
I can sit through the most disgusting movies usually. There's a very, very short list of films I can't sit through, out of a bigger list of very gross ones Somehow, I sat through Salo, but I just watched Human Centipede 2 and I just...couldn't? Out of a mixture of boredom and I think the way mental illness is portrayed
Saw all volumes of Faces of Death. In fact, i prepared a dinner of spaghetti and meat sauce for my buds before playing the VHS rental. We used to go see cheap ass movies on Tuesday nigbts. We went to see I Spot on Your Grave and it was revolting but the movie became the gold standard for thr "rape and revenge" movies likr Ms. 45 and subsequent I Spit on Your Grave remakes.
Ngl the Maniac remake is actually pretty damn good! I give Elijah Wood props for tackling the role. Never in a million years would I have thought he’d nail a role like that one!
I've been avidly watching "disturbing" movies for the last 15 years, I've seen most of the "big bads" that people say are the worst of the worst and honestly nothing prepared for me for The Poughkeepsie Tapes... I see people all the time say they didn't find it that scary or disturbing? It makes no sense to me... that film traumatised me for MONTHS. We surely can't have watched the same film...
I have watched Saw 3D, Cannibal Holocaust, Hostel 2, and Texas Chainsaw massacre when I was in elementary through DVD...As a kid that was really scary, I don't really remember all the scene of those movies coz I just watched them once and as I have said I watched it when I was a kid...anyway I'm from Philippines...we used to watch horror movies on DVD player back then, we had a lot of compact disc before, but now it was all gone
I don't think the Exorcist qualifies as horror film. Now, hear me out. Yes, it's shocking beyond belief, horrifying etc. But the good vs. evil, evil happens in the banal everyday settings and the unexpected anti-hero turned hero themes raise it beyond the level of a film made for the express desire to evoke fear. And evoke fear it does. But it also raises questions ( in some, not all ) about our everyday moral numbness, our relationship with the eternal, our blindness to suffering unless it is our own, the place of religion in society-vital or a quaint practice no longer relevant- you could see and extract literally hundreds of subtexts and themes from this brilliant film. I saw it in my teens, later in my adult years and in my old age, one theme I know I could never have appreciated as a younger person. That is indomitable courage in the face of certain defeat. Father Merrin knows he will not survive this encounter but that does not stop him. Martyrdom isn't pretty but his noble self sacrifice makes the movie transcend time and technology as a masterpiece.
What surprises me the most is that Australia and New Zealand have banned so many horror movies yet nobody here has mentioned Wolf Creek and its sequels as being utterly horrific. Mick Taylor is far more terrifying than any American horror character.
it might be a subtle difference, but Dead Alive isn't known as Braindead outside North America. The movie is actually called Braindead, but it was released in North America as Dead Alive, to avoid confusion with another movie called Brain Dead.
I’ve seen almost all of these movies, but to me one of the scariest horror movie of all times is the Blair Witch Project. In spite of its low budgest and most simple plot, this iconic movie taps into the most basic and straightforward form of fear that exists : fear of the dark and the unknown. Many horror filmmaker should get inspired by a very basic lesson it conveys : you do NOT have to show something scary in order to scare your audience. Suggestion is way more efficient.
