A D.C. gym owner was arrested Tuesday and accused of distributing child sex abuse materials while referring to himself as a “pedophile” to an undercover FBI employee, according to an arrest warrant. Michael Everts, 48, is the owner of FIT Personal Training in Dupont Circle. In 2014, he was profiled by the Washington Blade, and his gym was described as “the oldest personal training gym in Dupont,” founded in 2004. Documents filed in connection with Everts’ arrest indicate the FBI agents who took him into custody on child pornography charges have been putting together a case for months. According to the arrest warrant, the FBI was alerted to him last July, when an employee of a location-based hookup app, Sniffies, told them Everts actively sought underage males.

Thank you for this intriguing list. Watching this has given me quite a few new titles for my reading list. There are some names I am surprised not to have seen: (in no particular order) Brian Aldiss, C.S. Lewis, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Neil Gaiman, David Lindsay, John Wyndham, Harlan Ellison, J.G. Ballard, Bruce Sterling, A.E. Van Vogt, H.P. Lovecraft, Roger Zelazny, Fritz Leiber, Richard Matheson
@FIT2BREAD
@FIT2BREAD 2 года назад
Brandon, thanks. Regarding those missing, the reason some are missing...from your list, most of what I've read from those authors is their short fiction, which I wasn't including. In the case of Burroughs, there's a number of books from him and others I liked but I just don't remember enough to really even blurb or recommend the work. Aldiss and Lovecraft, I haven't read them yet...Aldiss is one I want to get too. Gaiman, I like a lot, and I debated putting American God's on here because I loved it, but I really ruled out things I felt were more of a fantasy read rather than scifi. There was some sci fi fantasy on the list, but for American Gods...

I'm working my way through this video (and I understand it is totally subjective) but, having looked at the spreadsheet list, I am amazed at some of the writers that don't get a mention. Strangely enough they are mostly from the British and American New Wave that began in the 1960's. J.G. Ballard, Michael Moorcock, Thomas M. Disch and Harlan Ellison to name but a few. This was an ''unofficial'' movement that dealt with such things as gender recognition/equality and ethnicity over 60 years ago but seems to have been forgotten, therefore resulting in recent works being treated as if they are something earth-shattering. Without wishing to complain too much, hasn't the theme ''post-apocalyptic'' been deconstructed sufficiently to show it for the farce (and dangerous one) that it is; a survivalist's wet dream. As a U.K. citizen I look upon the U.S.A. with horror when I see the latest atrocity caused by people who think it is their god-given right to own firearms but who shouldn't be allowed to own more than a blunt knife. One man's survivalist is another man's paranoid psychopath. Thanks for reading if you did. I'll leave my favourite story title, courtesy Theodore Sturgeon (on your list) printed in ''Dangerous Visions'' which was edited by Harlan Ellison (not on your list). ''If all Men were Brothers, would you let one of them marry your Sister.'' 🙂🙂🙂
@FIT2BREAD
@FIT2BREAD Год назад
Thanks for sharing. I haven't read Moorcock or Disch novels, I also didn't include short fiction, so Ellisons work didn't really qualify here for me. I might try to read some Moorcock in 2023

Finished. Michael, that was simply fantastic! Your passion for sci-fi books shines throughout. Thank you! I'll be looking for books by Alaya Dawn Johnson, Cory Doctorow (have Little Brother already), Wole Talabi, John Wisell, Imraan Coovadia, Brian Lee Durfee (have The Forgetting Moon), and Peter Watt's Starfish. The book that changed his life (The Sheep Look Up) also did the same for me as a teen. I started living a low environmental impact eco-conscious minimalist life-style decades before it became the "in" thing. As an adult, I refused to own a car till I had to get one when I was 40. I even went back to school to become a biologist so maybe I could do something to protect our world and the species within it. Watt's also reminds me of so many of my biology colleagues in his looks, mannerisms, speech, and the slightly jaded view of the world that comes when you're one of the people who can see a slow motion disaster that no-one else sees and who ignore your repeated warnings of the imminent approach of the disaster. It's like you're the person in a B-movie warning everyone about the monsters/aliens, but you're ignored by the town folk. If he was in a room with 10 non-biologists and you asked me who the biologist was, I'd pick him out of the crowd after a few minutes of watching and listening. One of your guests, Erik from Breakeven Books, was my classmate (I went back to school for a year to upgrade my IT skills). He recommended The Martian to me, and that got me back into reading fiction again. I'd gotten out of the habit as I was only reading nonfiction and journal articles for work-related purposes. And he's also the one who introduced me to booktubing. He was the first one I followed, then Rachel 2nd, then 3rd was some guy that Rachel featured on her channel--you may know him--he runs a fitness gym and has a talent for making creative videos and great lists of top books. ;) btw, I wanted to hear Moid's Peter Hamilton story. :) I think I've read most of the 210 list. I'm going to look for books that some of your guests have written now.

Bête is really pronounced as just "bet". Interesting factoid on etymology - the e circumflex is normally to signify a letter that was there and now isn't, usually an "s", like hôpital (hospital). If you add the dropped s in "bête" you get "beste" which is a lot closer to our "beast". This should not shock anyone who understands language, a vast majoirty (46%) of Englsih is close and/or corrupted French.

Saw your interview with Steve Donoghue. I hope I didn't cause any trouble for, or insult to, your son. If anything I meant it in part as a warning. It was awesome, staggering, so lovingly put together - but if my reaction was that severe, **something** had to be said - and I'm not the sort of guy who talks about trigger warnings. I agree with Steve that there a bunch of those presenters I could probably watch talk about their books - even more as the list goes higher. Altered Carbon is I think in my top ten so I was suprised it was so low. Other top tens for me would be Dune, Canticle for Leibowitz, Gatway, Spin, Newtons wake, Blindsight, Anathem, Hyperion and the Dorsai Cycle. I think Little Brother would start the next ten. At least thats how it looks today although Im sure of forgoten other more worthy books then those above... even right now Im thinking Lord of Light should be in there....Pushing Ice should be on there (danm what a good book). Re: Starship troopers; I think in using the "Bugs" as a protagonist Robert A. Heinlein is trying to emphasize the inherent terror of the Us/Them dichotomy and human ingroup psychology and societal and cultural xenophobia. Just how easy is it to fight the "Alien" epecially if they are really Aliens (with the added reality of soldiers IRL dehumanising the enemy via vulgar metaphorical deconstructions and "Labeling" convetions ["The Hun", "Jehardi", "Gook"] etc. Moreover Heinlein seems to me, to be suggesting, there is always much more to "conflict" at the sentient level where "understanding" "cognition" and "emotion" are players in the conflict. All of this is clever examination of war is then embeded with in and is subverting an on-the-serface-of-it "Action/Adventure" novel. Its is possible to view Starship Troopers as ONLY an "Action/Adventure" novel YET in reflection to his whole catalogue of work its easy to suggest he was doing much more then just "Action/Adventure". Even if its only "Action/Adventure" its a fun "Action/Adventure" genre romp!
@FIT2BREAD
@FIT2BREAD 2 года назад
Thanks. I purposely went with ranking them based on how I felt the day I wrote the list and also how likely I am to recommend the books. I def could have had most of your top tens in my top tens. Really anything in my top 60 could be in my top ten another day. Pushing Ice is one I'll get to soon. I actually haven't read Lord of Light (or if I did it was so long ago I don't remember). Thanks for the insight on Troopers. I often think about the alieness of non human characters in a similar way. Most recently I was considering it re Sophon in The Remembrance of Earths Past Series and Therem Estrevan in Left Hand of Darkness. I could also easily have Altered Carbon in my top ten, though it's higher on my enjoyment list and not as high on my recommend list, because I think it's only a certain audience I think I'd have opportunities to recommend it to
@epone3488
@epone3488 2 года назад
@@FIT2BREAD Aaahh Michael I "Grok" you now (lol) yeah Altered Carbon is no the easist recomend its deep Transhumanism and gritty street/low life make it not everyones cup of tea. Anyway its ridiculously hard to rank all these great works, well done the project was really entertaining and the cast amazing. I'd love to sit down for a coffee and talk books. Your insights make my enjoyment of my fave sci-fi all the more enjoyable. If you ever come Downunder I'll make that happen. I wanted to call 'Mockingbird' by Walter Tevis to your attention as a TBR. Its a lesser known examination of cultural decay and human meaning I love it and I hope you do too.

@@FIT2BREAD TLDR: For SF? No. For Ellison Completest? Yes. I *love* Ellison & take him warts & all. He was influential, well regarded and obsessed with honesty and the truth. HOWEVER, his vibrant idiosyncratic personality is NOT well suited to today's "court of public opinion." He used to say: "Everyone's NOT 'entitled' to their opinion! Everyone's entitled to their **informed** opinion!" He was very much a product of his times and the discrimination he faced. As are his works. "First Hand / Confessional Journalism" triply so. These are pieces that are **really** aim to give the True Flavor of the moment & the experience I CAN NOT imagine a world in which they don't feel dated. Heck, that sort of hip, anti-establishment "outside of the Ivory Tower" gonzo writing was it's own liminal zone between Journalism and Pulp, often only published in sketchy magazines (like William S Burroughs or later, Hunter S Thompson.) I'm just not that much of a fan of the 50's. My 20th century reading is usually kept to genre fiction. Just my preference. I'm a BIG fan of his essays/reviews/opinion pieces - He was a breath of fresh air - in a different world. His SF mostly transcends this dating, but not all of it. He was the spearhead of American New Wave SF & in this quest to drag what was seen as formulaic nonsense out of the pulps and into the light of LITERATURE he experimented with a number of the techniques popular at the time like "real down to earth slang" which doesn't translate well today but it made him a trailblazer then. Sometimes his characters are very real for the time, but not people we of the 21st C. feel comfortable going back to visit; & Immature readers blame him for holding up a mirror. You can get really nice editions from his old website, Harlan Ellison Books (com) now run by his estate. Corrected texts and such. Two of the sections from "Memos From Purgatory" (The Tombs & one other) were printed by The Village Voice back when it was counter cultural, won awards & were nominated for more. Those are good reading, I haven't read all of that stuff though. As I said, not really my interest, but a GREAT source document if you're into 20th C history. The books on his website go by their original titles but the other titles are listed. The guy running it is great & will answer questions but there's a lot of info there. To get back to you Question though: For ME, I haven't read all the 50's gang stuff because I wouldn't read it by other authors. I WOULD read it from Ellison, after all the other Non-fiction, essays, reviews, think pieces & Speculative Fiction. But what I HAVE read (The Tombs , etc.) was good. I'll get to it b/c I'm an Ellison completest. Perhaps you could've gotten through it faster than my reply. 😅
