Talent plus non stop practice. in other words, he worked hard and earned his abilities... ... and that is why I love to practice as much as possible even at 56 I still am inspired to pick up my instrument and play every day, usually for 90 minutes minimum 4 to 5 days a week is realistically, wife support me. That’s why we can see 100 bass players nail his bass riffs, but we haven’t seen another band with a bassist who comes up with stuff like this. The same is true of Peart, there many drummers who can copy his riffs, but we haven’t seen another band with a drummer writing stuff like that? Geddy also wrote his pieces to perfectly fit with any fill that Neil came up. In fact, it is Geddy’s bass that makes Neil’s fills really punch, as his bass highlights each accent and cymbal hit. There has never been a bassist and drummer duo who so perfectly mesh their rhythms and fills as Geddy and Neil. They were the ultimate rhythm section and the reason that Rush sounded so full for a 3 piece band. Geddy and Neil sounded like a band by themselves.

it's stunning to think that a guy like Geddy can be one of the greatest vocalists, bassists, and musical composers in rock, all at the same time. Geddy is a one in a billion guy. and then for circumstances to be such that Geddy ends up in a band, making music with, and being the best friends of fellow musicians and one-in-a-billion guys like Neil and Alex, that's like a one in a trillion occurrence. it really is incredible how some of the best bands coming together is down to the most minuscule of worldly chances, and insane luck, and there really couldn't be a more perfect combination of band members and people than Rush.

For anyone not aware, Tim is in a band called YYNOT. I'm not associated with the band, I'm just a fan that thinks they deserve a huge following. They started as a virtual "band" doing a RUSH inspired instrumental and video called YYNOT. They shared that on the popular RUSH messageboards and began to build a following. Everyone recorded their parts from their respective home states and were put together by creator/producer/guitarist, Billy Alexander. They began making amazing RUSH covers the same way. Billy eventually added a young woman named Rocky Kuner to sing. She is a tiny vocal powerhouse that can nail early Ged vocals. She absolutely owns No One at the Bridge. They have had numerous drummers over the last few years and were looking to find a permanent drummer prior to COVID-19 but as with all bands, have been side-lined. They have created two albums of great original music. They have done some touring and put on amazing shows that are a mix of RUSH covers and their own originals. Their touring is a bit unorthodox because Billy and Rocky are from Cali and Tim is, I think from Florida. They don't have a touring bus or anything like that. They book shows and travel individually to venues. For a band that is rarely in the same room with one another they are incredibly tight. Once live music is a thing again if you have a chance go see them. Incredibly talented and nice people. If you do a search there are a lot of videos of their covers and originals as well as videos from their live shows. They have a strong Facebook presence and their own website and merch. They also have what they call the Social Distance Club which is kind of a Patreon type club to help support them during these difficult times. YMMV, but I think if you are a RUSH fan you will almost certainly like YYNOT.

Rocky owns “No One At The Bridge” because no one else dare sing it because of that killer bridge, that includes post 1980s Geddy Lee. Her viersion of this song is goosebump-inducing, hair on the neck standing, incredible. I played it for my wife, a huge Rush fan and extremely critical of all Rush tribute bands and she pumped her fist in the air on the “scream out desperation, but, no one cannot hear” and yelled “yes!”. I am a guitarist who used to play in bands that covered Rush, so I give a bit more girth to tribute bands, knowing how difficult their stuff is to play. I am still critical on the ones that stink, but the few that top the list are all very good, bands like New World Men, Lotus Land and YYNOT are three of the best. Now I really love YYNOT, but I’m sorry, I think New World Men are the best tribute band. I do think that Tim is the best bassist I have heard though. YYNOT May be the best band of musician, I just think that New World Men capture the sound of Rush the closest. That may not be a good thing as far as music careers go. Sounding exactly like another band is not going to help you developing your own material. The problem is, if you have your own style, it will reflect when you’re trying to sound like Rush. YYNOT are beginning to release their own songs now and that is awesome and the right thing to do. They can use the fame and audience they have garnered to expose their own music to and it seems to be working. The three guys from NEM have captured Rush’s sound so perfectly that I think they’d have a hard time making their own music and not have it sound like Rush making new music. Mat sounds so much like Geddy Lee when he sings, I’m not sure he can sound like anyone else. I really can’t see how in the hell he can sing Geddy, while playing Neil Peart on drums. I would have never thought anyone could have accomplished that. Rocky is a phenomenal singer, but I can tell her voice from Geddy on pretty much every song. That’s probably a good thing, because sounding like Geddy would not help her on their original songs. They guys from NWM sound so much like Rush, I’m not so sure if that would help them build their own identity doing any original material. The YYNOT original songs that I have heard so far, don’t sound like Rush songs and that’s good, because they are building their own musical identity. Their songs are very good.

@RoarOfWolverine
@RoarOfWolverine 3 года назад
I was always disappointed a bit whenever I saw them live and Geddy would use the Fender to play the earlier songs he originally recorded with the Rick. There’s nothing wrong with the Fender, but I still associate all of the music prior to Permanent Waves with the growl of that Rick, especially when he was still running the Rick through the Ampeg SVT with the 8 10” cabinets.

I’ll tell you which Rush albums aren’t any good..... none of them, it’s a trick question. The reason they had such a long career is because they were always daring enough to be different and change it up. Al of those people who complained probably would have lost interest in the group of they just continued to make music that sounded like 2112, whether they know it or not. Every record Rush ever made has great songs on it. Yes, they got a bit keyboard heavy starting with GUP to HYF, but their are still great songs on those records. Rush didn’t know how to write bad music. It was always unique and challenging.

That song is great, but for me that whole album centers around the Monkey Business. It's such an absolute monster of a track.

This is so well done. The sound. The editing. I like how we get to hear the sound the two different basses make. The song list is good,and the facial expressions as you both play....show joy in playing these great songs. Thanks for this.

What a fantastic chronology. The evolution of Geddy from pre-1980's through the decades has just been performed in what can only be described as a clinic. Wow Tim. Natural Science perhaps is one of the most overlooked/underrated Rush tracks. Truly a masterpiece. And YYZ? It's freakin' YYZ!!!!

Tim makes these Geddy riffs look so easy. The only person who makes those bass licks look easier is Geddy himself. Tim is an incredible bassist who can nail all of Geddy’s dynamics perfectly, which isn’t easy because Geddy really hits those strings hard and uses his index fingernail to pop the string for accents. Now just imagine, Geddy plays all of this as he is singing lead on every song, not to mention playing keyboards with his feet on many of them.

I have the MXR Bass DI+ and it has a distortion that, while it can't do exactly what this box does, does something I haven't heard elsewhere. When not going specifically for "fuzz bass" it's kind of cool leaving it just barely on.

this list being in chronological order speaks to me man- good work :D when you did anthem and bastille day back-to-back, i genuinely thought you'd just do the entire R30 overture. you almost did when you came back for cygnus parts 1 and 2 dunno how you were able to only pick one song from permanent waves though- spirit of radio and freewill both have several great bass sections in them alone. also, no bass solos from vital signs or subdivisions?! madness great choice on the enemy within. i think people forget just how much bass playing there is on grace, power and hold. whether you like the 80s sound or not, you cannot deny geddy's playing on those album, whilst singing and doing all the synth work
