Rehoming fish isn’t talked about a lot because it’s… kinda controversial, so let’s talk about 3 times I personally rehomed my fish and where they went.

Great video. This is the unpleasant topic that should be talked about way more than it is. I think some people just panic at how fast live bearer's can turn into hundreds in a very short time and they get overwhelmed. So they dump them in a pond. But then some people are just lazy and will dump them anywhere there's water. These options are so bad for the ecosystem in each water way. Just look what's happening in Florida. So 😢sad. It's tragic. Especially because a little bit of education might've prevented it.

That's how my local river lost its unique species of natural guppies. Some idiots in the 70s decided to dump guppies and plecos in our river

People dump fish AND tortoises in temple koi ponds, which killed off quite a few beautiful kois because of the disease they introduce and a sudden spike in ammonia

@@GirlTalksFish Do all dragon scale bettas eventually go blind? I saved one days away from death at Petco not knowing anything about them and now that he's thriving with me and happy in his 20 gallon tank, I'm horrified to read that their scales can grow over their eyes making them unable to find food or live a healthy life.

I recently had to sell for the first time and it was stressful and made me so sad. I decided that I was done with my shrimp tank because I was just tired of the maintenance of so many tanks. I got not nearly as much as I could have for it, but I was happy to have it gone. I also had to get rid of my panda corys. I'd had them for years, but the substrate I put in my new aquarium was just not good for them and they were losing all of their barbels. It legitimately broke my heart to get rid of them. Some of them had been born and raised with me. But, I posted them on craig's list, and I had the gentleman that was interested show me photos of his tanks. He had existing cory colonies, and they looked pretty healthy, so I felt okay rehoming them and I just let him take them. I should text him and see how they're doing.

Great video! I am currently over run with platys and guppies myself! I am lucky to have a privately owned fish store who will take them off my hands... I also belong to an Aquarium club so we do have swaps and auctions too.

*What recommendations do you have for people who need to rehome their fish?*
@minlingg91

i rehomed my platys to a retiree with a 5ft quarantine tank and a 3ft dragon pot ( i only have a 2ft tank). the fish that ended up staying with me were the unlucky ones. i dont think fish get emotionally attached to humans like other animals do so i think it is OK as long as theyre rehomed to someone with experience or at least expert guidance in having fish.

I'm overrun with Gambusia atm, so I'm taking them to my LFs. Not gonna lie, im sad, but i cannot keep 20+ in a 10 gallon, they get to big for that. I kept 4 males, but im sad to see my big mamas have to go. 😢 rough stuff

Y'know, I was thinking "Wait... How is this controversial?" Then I realized that you meant offloading or releasing "re-home", not transferring them from one tank to another. I was taking care of a couple for my siblings goldfish a few years back, and it was getting to the point where they couldn't fit in the 30-gal. We already had a pond in our yard sat up for a good while, and it isn't connected to any local waterways, so it was just a matter of acclimating and releasing them.

I have a question. So I had 4 kuhli loaches but after time 3 of them passed and would love to get more but they always stay under the gravel so I don't know how to get them to be out more? The one I have left is not as shy but just for future info 🙂

I love this video! Question, how did you go about donating your fish to the pet store? What steps did you take?
@GirlTalksFish
@GirlTalksFish Год назад
If I'm rehoming to a fish store, I usually call beforehand to see if they have space for them and are willing to take them. In the case of Petco, that store used to have a donation tank, so you didn't have to call beforehand, but they've since changed their policies.

I use Kijiji (the Canadian equivalent of Craigslist). They actually have a section for rehoming fish.

@michaelfox6820

I had that problem, and I found a person in my community who made a living looking after ponds and institutional fish tanks. She was able to rehome my two large goldfish in a 300 gallon tank in a senior's home.

The Fish Store in Seattle will take your fish for adoption. The fish in adoption tank are sold by size of bag, not free, so they are less likely to become live fish food.

Good topic, I find livebearers will self-regulate their population over time. So, you don't have to get rid of all the babies, unless you want to. I guess the question becomes, how many are too many ;-)
@lruddy8820
@lruddy8820 Год назад
throwing a betta or dwarf gourami in with livebearers will help control population and youll get a slow and steady growth in your livebearer population
