3.82 * CS / diameter of work piece (lathe) will give you better cuts. Cutting brass should have a crisp sound. Your tool holder is jumping, meaning you're feeding too fast and a lighter depth of cut (DOC) wouldn't hurt either. Basically these machines can only handle at most aluminum. I would also use very sharp insert with a positive rake. These are more "free cutting" which means less tool pressure. But basically slow everything down.

It is dangerous to have your sleeves down, roll them up or take off the jacket.

Also, don't feed backwards with that insert, there's no relief for chips to escape, that's why it sounds different. But keep at it!
