WHAT IS DISCUSSED IN THIS VIDEO
When the days get shorter, more and more people notice that driving at night can be difficult because their vision might be blurry or they are dealing with a lot of glare. Dr. Guymon goes over the top tips to reduce glare and make sure your vision is clear while driving at night.
1. Get an eye exam
- Check for any eye diseases
- Get glasses (night driving prescription glasses) that can correct for
even mild amounts of astigmatism or nearsightedness
2. Clean the windows to your eye
- Clean your windshield
- Clean your glasses
- Make sure your contacts are clean and clear of deposits
- Use tips to keep your eyes from getting dry, as well as use artificial
tears to help keep the cornea clear.
3. Yellow Driving Glasses?

I remember when LED lights first came out and it was illegal to put them on cars. I don't know why they changed that. The worst thing to happen to safety in years.
@lihtan
@lihtan 7 месяцев назад
Prior to LED headlights, were the xenon HID lights in the early 2000s. Retrofitting them was illegal because the optics for a halogen light are entirely incompatible with the much brighter light output from an HID bulb. HID optics include a projector lens, and a gate that induces a beam cutoff so you don't blind anyone. Many systems even included things like automatic beam leveling. Most people that did conversion just crammed the HID bulb into their old halogen reflectors, and got terrible performing headlights that blinded other road users.

Night driving glasses with an AR coating and Category 0 lenses reduce that glare, and the reduction in VLT (visible light transmission) is minimal. Don't buy a pair with polarized lenses - there are lots of those on the market, but polarized lenses do not work in artificial diffused light. The companies who sell those do so to make money out of the myth that polarized lenses reduce glare from headlamps when it simply isn't true.

I'm religious about wearing yellow glasses when I drive at night. They really work wonders for knocking out the worst parts of the blue light spectrum from HID & LED lights. I'm less bothered by halogens. They have a warmer incandescent color, they're no where near as bright. Sadly more vehicles are being equipped with LED headlights these days vs halogen.

The trick of looking to the right or at the fog line (that solid white line at the shoulder of the road) was taught to me in a defensive driving course when I was working for the USFS in 1976. I have used it ever since, through many years of driving semi-trucks and my own vehicles. It really does help. If the oncoming vehicle has very bright lights or is high off the pavement, like trucks and jacked up pickups, I close my left eye. Also, if you have an old windshield, it may be pitted from years of small rocks thrown up by the car in front of you. My insurance company allows replacement of the windshield every 3 years, even if it is not cracked. A new windshield makes a huge difference, so check with your insuror.
@Alvaser7
@Alvaser7 Год назад
I’ve found really helpful just to rotate head to the right when ongoing vehicle approach - to block the light coming from headlamps to the right eye with a nose. This way you not messing with depth perception, and still can see somewhat clearly right after turning head to initial position
@domhamai

My tip for being blinded by headlights at night is to focus on the edge of your side of the road at the horizon point. It’ll keep you on the road and decrease the blinding a bit. Also a quick flash is sometimes okay to let the other driver know, but don’t aggressively blind them back in retaliation. They might be struggling with a difficult patch on unfamiliar road and you don’t want to cause an accident.

Thanks for the great video. I am a gamer and have wondered if I could improve my skills with those glasses. lol I sure need to find something that will. I learned a night-time driving tip the hard way. If you have to spend hours driving on a highway at night, turning down the dashboard lights is (as you noted in your video), a really good idea. Also, for many newer cars, you can completely turn off the huge, bright map/radio/control touch screen. During a long road trip, my eyes adjusted to the bright light of the map/touch screen glaring into my right eye. Staring out the front window, with the dashboard turned low but the map glaring seemed to reduce my ability to see movement with little light contrast on the roadway (like deer wandering the edge of the road) AND gave me quite a headache after a few hours. By chance, I accidentally turned off the screen and plunged the interior of my car into darkness... within seconds/minutes the roadway seemed to light up. My ability to clearly see the roadway and surrounding area dramatically increased. I am not sure it works as well for short city driving because of stoplights, building lights, etc.

Glad to see you're not promoting those yellow driving glasses. I'm an optometrist myself and I've also come across several sources stating that these lenses reduce visual acuity by a certain amount, even though the patient may subjectively feel better due to reduced brightness... But of course they do, they're wearing sunglasses! So it's not something I recommend. Like several other people have advocated here in the comments, I also just recommend that the patient simply tries not to look directly at the oncoming headlights... It seems stupidly logical, but some people apparently don't realize that it might help to, well, not look directly at the bright lights. And certainly, make sure the windshield and mirrors are cleaned.

Keeping your eyes comfortable and in good condition is the supreme priority. But keeping lenses, contact lenses, AND windows clean is not a secondary option. It is just as important. The problem with contacts is that if you wear them often and for extended periods, they can trap dirt, bacteria, and other contaminants against the eye itself, leading to sore, tired eyes. Good quality artificial tears is understandably desired and recommended. Naturally occuring defects like astigmatism and other eye maladies should be professionally diagnosed and treated. Personally, I generally see just as well at night as in daytime, with the obvious exception of reduced ambient lighting. But in particular, it's the glare of bright headlights that obscures vision because it fills the view with a spread-out cloud making it very difficult to see objects on either side. The suggestion to not look directly at bright lights is a good one. Practice looking toward the side, edge of the road, or curb as headlights approach and kind of still see what might be between the headlights and the side of the road. ( I wonder if I'll be smart enough to take my own medicine after spouting off all that wisdumb.)

That isn't true - if you buy the right ones. Night driving glasses with an AR (anti-reflective) coating effectively reduce the glare from oncoming headlamps, and the reduction in VLT (visible light transmission) is minimal. The reason many people have lost faith in this type of eyewear is because there are too many cowboys out there, selling polarised night glasses (which don't work because polarised lenses only work in sunlight) on eBay and Amazon. These people are just greedy and sell what they can buy on Alibaba without having a clue whether they work or not. I find it frustrating because I've been selling my own brand of specialist glasses (Rapid Eyewear) for many years - these guys give us all a bad name.

While a yellow tinted lens does reduce light by eliminating the blue light, the human eye is overall most sensitive to yellow light. So by making more things appear yellow it has the sensation of being brighter enough though it may not. For the same reason why turn signals should only be yellow, i don’t understand why manufacturers make them red. Blue light hurts the eyes anyways, so shame on the led headlights now a days.
