Modern nymph fishing has changed the game in how we fish rivers. But you can use some very effective methods with a classic rod and leader setup. Here I will show you what I believe are the 3 best methods.
My first rod setup used in this video:
Rod: Vision rivermaniac 9’ #5 medium
Reel: Vision XO #5-6 silver
Line: Vision Feel 115 #5
My second rod setup used in this video:
Rod: Vision Sisu 9’ #5
Reel: Vision XO #5-6 black
Line: Vision XO 100 #5

I personally prefer yarn indicators in lapland when i need long casts (and not using euro nymph rod). I find that hard indicators often spook trout. Graylings you can catch with any setup :)

G'Day from Australia, Really enjoyed your video on those three nymphing techniques. There's so much info on nymph fishing that it can be very confusing and as you noted, some techniques can be very limiting. Fishing a long French leader works well but if you want to change to a dry fly, it is very difficult. I like the versatility of using a 9 foot 5wt outfit as you can change styles fairly easily. I use all the techniques as shown in your video. Nymph under a dry fly is always my first go to method. Those grayling are beautiful looking fish. Unfortunately they were never introduced into Australia. We have brown and rainbow trout, brook trout and salmon--all introduced in the mid to late 1800's. We also have introduced coarse fish--roach, carp and perch. I look forward to watching more of your excellent videos. Cheers, Steve

I think your videos are great. Useful tips, some of which I use in Wales. Good to see you using a wading stick in that fast water. I’m never without one on the rivers I fish.

Nice , I live on the Madison river in Montana and we nymph fish quite a bit when there are no hatches going on and use all of these methods for trout . The only difference is we can use multiple weighted nymphs which really helps when you are trying to identify what there feeding on . Thanks for the video

Brilliant tutorial,Robert.I use that first method almost exclusively with a big bushy dry and a minuscule nymph tied in the bend for trout.I ,alas have no grayling to present them to.😢

Hey Robert, cool video. First Setup I really dislike that the tippet can slip from the DryFly Hook especially when it is barbless. I had it several times. Now I am using the orvis tippet knot and use one sidearm of the tippet for the dryfly. With your first setup I also had a lot of bad hook sets when the trout goes for the dry miss it and I set the hook wrong with the nymph. Cheers

Not a fan of nymphing, but this super useful summary motivates me to give it another go. What fly line did you use on the second setup (orange/white)? Thanks Robert!

Thanks for video. Please how is setup (leader, rig) for indicator?
@FlyFishingbyRobert
@FlyFishingbyRobert Год назад
Tapered 9 foot nylon leader (0,20 mm) and 100-150 cm tippet (0,17 mm) tied on with a Surgeon's knot or a small tippet ring. I use the vision nano mono for both tippet and leader.

Which rod do you think is better for this technique, a 9.6 ft 3wt or a 9ft 4wt?
