TOP 3 REASONS TO OWN A KUBOTA L2501 TRACTOR

This is the 1st of 2 parts in this series. I go into what I got the tractor for and how I have it set up for what I use it for.
The Kubota L2501 is a great little tractor and is perfect for me and the applications which I use it for.
Although it may or may not be the right choice for you, I do believe that you owe this tractor a real long, hard look.

Great video Gary! I agree with everything you say, I placed an order (l2501d) due to your review about two years ago where you could widen the R4 tires. Half of my 17 acres is has hills and slopes. This tractor is absolutely perfect for my needs then some. I went with wheel weights, due to the fact I thought I would get flat tires in sage brush and cactus on my property, which hasn’t happened, but these tractor’s definitely need some weight in the rear. . I appreciate you sharing your time and knowledge and putting together these videos. I also enjoy seeing your John Deere’s but I am a huge fan of the orange!

Awesome review Mr Gary, I enjoyed hearing the reasons you chose what you did! I don't know alot about them but agree for your purpose the direct gear drive seems a better choice! You went over it very well sir!! I love the scabbard (sp) you made there, thats perfect!! I love those quick hitchs as well, very handy!! The wheel spacing and reasons behind it make perfect sense ..just an awesome video Mr Gary!!!

Great review! I’ve had a number of tractors or over the years but they were old and I worked on them more than they were used. Got tired of that issue so I went and looked at newer used tractors! Found out they weren’t that much cheaper than new and many were beat pretty hard! Luckily I have a kubota dealer about 15 miles from me so went and checked my options! The price difference from a 2501 to a 3901 was quite significant! Didn’t mind the manual trans at all so I purchased the 2501….used it for 6 years and it performed as it should. I sort of out grew the tractor and my needs changed! I used it more for my automotive needs! Like pushing dead vehicles in and out of my shop, moving engines / transmissions to and from storage area and to my shop etc! The clutch got to be a pain with all the stop and go I was doing …also afraid I would wear it out much faster. Plus quite a few times I could have used more Hp with some of the yard work I did with it also. I ended up trading it in on a 3902 and couldn’t be happier! Much smoother operation for my needs than the manual trans! Now I understand why there’s so many different tractor options out there!

Thanks for the review. That's a nice tractor. We have a good Kubota dealer nearby. I was looking at some last summer. There was a waiting list on new tractors at this dealer. ( 2-3 months) I would need something bigger than 25 hp, more like 35-40hp. Thanks for sharing.

G’day Gary. The Kubota tractor I’ve got is the next sized up frame I think, the MX5200. I think the MX is to the M like the LX is to the L and the BX is to the B. I wanted to buy a Kubota L3800 but there were none available. The dealer gave me a good deal on the MX5200 as he understood I wanted a smaller tractor and they did not have one. In Australia at least the guvment does not think little tractors are going to bring on a climate catastrophe so they do not have funny tin cans under the hood along with lights & buttons on the dash. The tractor does not demand to stay on and burn diesel at certain times either. I think people should campaign to remove the regulations on little tractors in America. I’m happy with my tractor. I’d like to get a grill guard as I’m worried about a stick or branch damaging the grill. I keep a chain in the loader, in a tube inserted into the tube in the loader. That seems to work. Mine is HST and agree the brake peddles are basically useless with the HST peddle in the way. However brakes are rarely needed with a HST tractor. Good video mate.

I don’t use my L2501 on the road anymore. When I lived on the other fam 7 miles away, I would haul the loads home with it. We lived on top of a big hill. The L2501 wouldn’t begin to pull the loads up that big hill in high gear. The loads weighed more than the tractor. I would be curious to see how much difference your L3301 would make Phil. Or Martin from DIY My Way’s L3901 would do. That would make for a great comparison. Now that I don’t have to deal with that hill anymore, the 24 hp fits all my other needs perfectly. To be honest, I was a little worried when I got the tractor if 25 hp would be a bit lacking. Go watch Richie from Hillside Acres use theirs. I wish I could have seen some of those videos before I got mine. That would have given me confidence That last video that you did with that tote on the back full of wood and climbing that hill was an awesome demonstration. Thanks for sharing that Phil.

I too got the L2501 gear drive. Didn't want the treadle peddle. I got the R14 tires which I like and the BH77. I wanted something about the size of my 1950 8N which I still have to plow snow, Had it a year now and wished I had gotten it sooner. It was supposed to be my retirement tractor but life keeps you busy so it came a couple years later. I will be 69 in july so we share age and opinions on tractors. Thanks for your videos Gary!

Same here I used an 8n to plow snow and it worked well, I would typically get stuck once a year in super deep snow, having the 2501 with 4 wheel drive and a loader I never get stuck. Should have went with a 2501 10 years ago, the 8n is due for a rebuild and I would always smell like exhaust fumes but I can’t complain to much as the 8n has ran for 70 years!

lol. At your next unnecessary purchase comment. I think that most of us are there. My neighbor got a really nice 60 hp Mahindra from an estate in Texas. He got the tractor with the cab and loader, box blade, grader blade, post auger, and a really heavy duty rotary mower all for $25,000. The tractor had very few hours on it. The tractor alone was worth way more than that. He really likes it. We have a really good Mahindra dealer 12 miles away from me. I have been impressed with what I see in them. Thanks for watching… and for the belly laugh 😂

I literally paused it at 1:24 to answer my thoughts. 1. Budget. It's a decent size/weight/power/function tractor... a homesteading machine for a relatively economical price. 2. Reliability. Kubota has a good reputation for making durable tractors. 3. Size. It's not too big to be pulled behind a half ton pickup, fits in a garage easily, fits on a side by side trail, and still brings enough size and weight for tasks a BX would not be able to do. It's probably about the biggest size tractor you can get in that price range. Now, let's see if you agree... R1s and Gear is right up my alley. A man who works his tractor in the fields and forest will prefer the R1s! My main complaint when I looked at the L2501 was the lack of an independently operating PTO on the gear model. Correct me if I'm wrong. Having those two piece wheels to space out is a GREAT thing. I had single piece wheels with unballasted R4s on a 30-35 hp tractor. It never felt stable on a hillside. I agree with you on HP. I never ran out of power. I might have been in the wrong gear, but never really ran out of power. I have run out of weight and traction many times on my previous tractor. Oh you left us hanging on your top 3!!!!
@tractortalkwithgary1271
@tractortalkwithgary1271 2 года назад
Agree 100% Logan. I happen to like the pto not being independent for brush hogging. The second that I step down on the clutch, the power stops to the pto. That has saved me from shearing a whole bunch of pins. I could put a slip clutch on the mower, but I am too cheap. I like the tractors that have the flat floor. They are so much more comfortable to be on for hours without end. A better seat and tilt wheel would be nice too. All of that is available in the Grand L series, but you will have to pay for it. All great points Logan. I am editing the 2nd video of this 2 part series now. I think you will agree with my 3 points. I think you may have already.

How's she goin'? Nice review of your tractor Gary and all the mods and adds you made to it, but I'm afraid it's not 'red' enough for me!!! LOL But you know what, when buying a brand new unit the things you are mentioning about the tractor are the things that everyone needs to be aware. The brand probably won't be that important and I think it will be based a lot on how the dealer interacts and supports you. Now if you are buying a used or even antique tractor, then the whole playing field comes down to personal choice then since you will probably be doing all the maintenance work on the tractor yourself. Great video topic and I'm looking forward to part 2!! Take care!!

Hydrostatic is nice, but just like a torque converter they take power! Gear drive gets all the engine horsepower to the ground. Rule of thumb for torque converter, it takes 20% of the horsepower away from the ground. Wide stance and ballast are a must! And for Gods sake, keep the loader down when doing tractor work!!! Every roll over we went on, the loader was always up in the air. Keep it down low!!! Center of gravity can save you, or put you in the ground. Good video Gary!

@@GosselinFarmsEdGosselin , a friend that I used to work for was killed under a 460 Farmall tricycle with a Westendorf loader on it . He was lifting a plow out of a ditch on a steep hill side. The chain slid to the downhill side and flipped the tractor right on top of him. He was still in the seat. And yes, he had the loader all the way in the air. The only time that should ever be in the air is to dump the bucket and even then only on solid level ground. I have seen farmers all around us use their loader tractors for field work and run around in the field with the loader all the way in the air. That is a horrible idea. Extremely dangerous to do that.

You should be able to copy my set up for around $20-$25 minus the magnets

@tractortalkwithgary1271
@tractortalkwithgary1271 Год назад
Hi Tom, I haven’t run either implements on my L2501. That would be a question to ask your dealer. As for 25 horsepower lacking, I had the same concerns when I bought mine. For my part, the 25 hp does very well. When the tractor is out working it is down in lower gearing. Giving you more mechanical advantage for ground engaging implements. You will break traction before you run out of power. Pulling wagons and such on the roads in high gear, you will run out of power quickly in hills with a load behind you. This little tractor has amazed me at what it is capable of pulling. I hope this helps you and thanks for watching.

Sorry, this response never showed up in my feed. I went with factory 1 inch spacers. They are very conservative with theirs. In fact, I think that 1 inch is all you can get from Kubota. Other after market manufacturers make them up to 6 inch, I believe. My is hard to load and unload from my trailer as how the wheels on the rear are now set so much wider than the front. I have made an extra set of ramps to use just for safety’s sake. Can’t be too careful there. Sorry I missed your question. I hope this helps you. Thanks for watching
