The Muhle R89 has to be one of the finest DE razors made. Of the six razors I own, it and a Feather AS D2 are my favorites. Thanks, Geo, for helping men around the world to return such a pleasing and rewarding ritual that was almost forgotten. Shaving before with plastic, throw-away multi-blade razors was a chore but now, shaving is something more like meditation. Very calming and soothing.

Started with a DE89 with the black rubber handle as I thought it would have more grip and the long handle would be easier to transition from a Mach 3 as opposed to the shorter 34C. Works great, love it. I did get the 34C recently and really like it as well. I may like the head even more. In any case, Astra Greens and these razors are amazing. The Gillette Heritage has the 89 head and it is a nice mix of both - shorter handle but DE89 head.

Geofatboy: A huge huge thank you. Thank you for putting this video out to give us some simple information on what razors you'd recommend to start out with Wet Shaving. The video took some stress out on what razor I'm going to get in the near future. Made my choice easier. I'd like to suggest that a complete update video be made on what products are available to use on wet shaving: what are beginner razor blades to start with, what are mild and aggressive razor blades, plus an idea of what costs are associated with blades. Shaving brushes, what is boar, badger and even synthetic brushes, differences and prices. And finally soaps, pucks, or sticks of shaving creams available plus what you'd recommend and their prices. There's so much (an overload of) information and products its very confusing to know what's what and its price association. For Someone like me, a video like this will help tremendously and eliminate confusion, stress when figuring out what to get when starting wet shaving. It may be a long video, but it would help out more than you know to myself and others.. The simpler the info and explanation of it would be of great great use. I hope this video can be done and hopefully it would bring some business to ShaveNation.Com! Thank You!👍👍😎😎

Note that the Merkur 34 also come as a 34G version, where G stands for Gold. Bling bling! Very nice. (I have both the 34C and 34G, awesome razors.) The 34c always causes me irritation on my neck. So did the Parker Variant even on setting 1. Only the r89 does not cause me any irritation. Yes it is the mildest razor I’ve used, but that might be a good thing for some. It’s perfect for everyday or every other day shaving. For more than a few days growth, I like to do the first pass with a more aggressive razor then switch to the r89.

I am looking for a safety razor (on a budget) that gives great control and maneuverability (getting into all the nooks and crannies) and has the ability to get really close. (Babie's bottom smooth.) What would you recommend. I also have a small mole on the left side of my jaw that does protrude very slightly. . Would a DE blade be a able to handle the roadbumps without lopping it off? Thanks again for the content and your knowledge. P.S. Knowing that products tend to change rapidly, have you found companies that habe maintained a level of consistency with their blades over the years? Last but not least, are there any budget safety razors on the market that you feel compete well with the more expensive heavy hitters?

Blades it depends, feathers are extremely sharp, so technique is absolutely key. You have to experiment with the blades though, as one person can love a blade, and another hate it. Online you can buy blade sampler packs, basically a bunch of single packs of different blades. For shaving soaps, proraso white is designed for sensitive skin, according to the bio for it. Alot of low scent or no scent soaps are good for sensitive skin.

It just felt really natural... I didn't need to fight with the razor and yank it back and forth just for a single hair that wouldn't come out. Just a couple of strokes and GONE! I did cut my chin a little bit, but I had a pimple growing, so bear with me :P Oh and if you're like me and you have VERY sensitive skin, I can say I wasn't red at all after shaving. I'd usually be all red after shaving... Again.... thanks a LOT! PS - Anyone who's thinking of getting one of these bad boys... I got the "365 Day Kit: Parker 22R Safety Razor Set". I highly recommend it!

It would seem suggesting an adjustable razor (like the Rockwell 6C, Parker Variant or Merkur Progress) might be a better long-term option, since they'll better adapt to one's skill, skin sensitivity and beard growth.
@JonBonesJones84
@JonBonesJones84 4 года назад
Rockwell razors are overrated and unnecessarily expensive. The 6S isn't aggressive at all. I really don't get why everyone keeps making a fuss about it. I have the type of beard where I MUST use a brand new razor blade every time, and found the level 6 head to be really decent, but not enough to sway me to keep it at $100
@borbetomagus
@borbetomagus 4 года назад
@@JonBonesJones84 Search out the iKon Tek (Tech) or the Yaqi 'Knight Helmet' (SRH039 (My favorite of the Yaqi razor heads, as it holds the blade more securely)), 'Beast' (SRH013) or unnamed open comb slant razor heads (SRH030) -- which Shave Nation currently doesn't stock -- that all come close to the aggression of the iKon Tech. Or you could get a Merkur Futur and 'jailbreak' it to shave at '12'. Or look into an **adjustable** Single Edge razor, which use thicker Feather Artist Club (or Kai or Schick) single edge blades that last longer. One of these SE razors is a favorite, given the overall efficiency and smoothness, but in some areas it can't quite match the somewhat harsh iKon Tech. If none of those do the trick, one of the most aggressive options would be one of the Feather DX style razors (folding or kamisori) using a Feather Professional Super blade (which has extra depth), which promises facial damage in untrained hands. One day I might start out with the safer Feather SS kamisori razor (which has 'training wheels' near the blade edge).

@@borbetomagus Hi! I see you recommend a razor head from Yaqi too. I was wondering if you have tried their Double open comb razor head. What are your thoughts?
@borbetomagus
@borbetomagus 4 года назад
@@shayanali8771 I assume you're referring to the Yaqi 'Mellon' head (SRH011), which was probably inspired by the 'Grand Shave King Self Lubricating Razor' invented by Joseph M Mellon around 1945, that later inspired the Phoenix Accoutrements 'DOC' (Double Open Comb) razor. I have the 'DOC' and it is a mild razor, but (from what I remember) was not as efficient as I like. Given the price of Yaqi razor heads, you could try numerous options. I'm pretty certain their 'Beast' head uses their 'Mellon' top cap along with their DE89-like base plate (SRH012?) that (ironically, given both mild razors) produces quite an aggressive razor head.

Geo, I have the EJ 89L that I bought from you some years ago. And I really like it! But why did you have to mention not to drop it? I have a tiled bathroom floor! So from now on I will be a nervous wreck every time I shave with it. Just kidding.

For curiosity, it would be interesting to hear you, Geo, with your experience, expertise and discriminating knowledge, sum up the differences, if any, in shaving experience between these 3 razors. I have 2 of them, but the 34C, really, takes care of all my needs in a standard safety razor. Best wishes, Geo. Thanks.

Hey, have two quick questions. I’m trying to get into straight razors I’ve been using a shavette for around a year as well as a safety razor. I can never shave up on my neck without the shavette skipping on my skin and nicking me. I was wondering if this was the weight of the shavette because it is so light. I am thinking of getting a straight razor around $100-$200 if I can shave against the grain up on my neck without it skipping it would be great. So far I get a closer shave from a shavette because I can go against the grain without is skipping.

I just got a Merkur 39C slant bar razor. This slant bar prevents skipping or blade chattering which I often experience on more agressive razors. You may try a slant razor to solve your problem.

That's a funny weight spec on the Muhle. I have the R 89 TWIST (2 instead of 3 parts, twisting cap at the botton) and it weighs exactly 89 grams, 50% heavier than your spec here.

How about a selection of razors not for beginners, but a definitive lifetime pick for practical users. based on the little experience I have I'd choose the 34c, the DE89BL and the Fatip. I havent tried the R41, but I probably will since I always find myself using the Fatip in the angle where I can feel the bare blade.

It is not that those razors cannot be used by experienced shavers they just happen to be easy for inexperienced users.

I have never used a safety razor, but after watching your videos will buy one. My question is why not start with an advance/professional razor, is it that difficult to use? (I don't want to keep buying different ones, the main point is to safe money)

I started with an Edwin Jagger DE89 because I heard “ it’s a great beginner razor”. But it was far too mild for me. I saved some coin and bought an Edwin Jagger 3ONE6. It’s not even an “aggressive” razor but it’s far more EFFICIENT. I also like my RazoRock Mamba 70 for times when I shave more often or want a close AND mild shave.

What kind of shaving cream do you guys recommend? I don’t want to shave my whole face since I do like some kind of a beard. Is there something like a transparant cream? Would hate to shave a part that I don’t want to haha

There are many soap and cream options available, but you may prefer the price, scents, and lathering ability (as some can produce a foamy, instead of a thick lather) of some brands over another. Many start out with Taylor of Old Bond Street 'Sandalwood Shaving Cream' (GeoFatboy has done numerous videos using it -- /watch?v=pG6ksGvLxMg), though you also might want to look into their 'Royal Forest' variety, which I hope to try. You also might want to consider one of Proraso's soaps: Sandalwood (in a red or burgundy plastic bowl), Eucalyptus (green bowl) or Sensitive (white bowl). One of my favorite creams is Speick Shave Cream, which has an herbal, spicy scent. For any of these soaps, I use a cheap IMUSA salsa bowl, spread a pea-sized amount of soap or cream in the bottom of the bowl (that's all you really need) and use a 26mm synthetic brush to build a lather. At some point in the lather building process, lather will have accumulated inside the brush and you will need to extract that lather out of the brush (this is a very important) by leaning the base of the brush on the edge of the bowl to pull it out and re-position it in the bottom of the bowl. Next, add a few drops of water and re-work that initial lather until you produce enough lather for your needs (though you may need to re-extract, add more water and re-work when necessary, depending on brand). All soap formulas are different and initial lather results of some brands may cause you to think that a pea-size amount of soap/cream is insufficient, but if you keep re-working it you may be surprised how a little bit of effort will do in producing a lather.

Question. I was going to buy the Merker 34C for my first safety razor, but as I am 6'4" with reasonably large hands, would this Merker 34C be too small? Or does this not matter as I see most men balance the razor without using the last two fingers. Geofatboy said that he wouldn't mind the handle being a little bit longer. Clueless at this moment.
